"... Hirono Shimizu."
Hirono gritted her teeth and stood up after Sakamochi announced her name. She trudged her way to the front of the classroom. Being that her desk was in the second-to-last row, that meant that she had plenty of time to walk past her classmates, wondering if this would be the last time that she would be seeing them alive. She walked by desk after desk, and against her will, she started calculating their odds of surviving more than a few hours.
She tried to force those thoughts from her head, and instead focused her eyes on the front of the room, and the person there who really deserved to die: Sakamochi. She wished that she could have pulled out whatever weapon she got assigned right there and take him out. But of course, that would only end with her joining Hayashida as a bullet-riddled corpse on the floor of the classroom, likely traumatizing everyone even further.
Bastard. He was the only one in the room who was protected, and he deserved it the least. She did her best to avert her gaze from his, but she could still feel his slimy little smile directed at her as she grabbed the top bag from the pile. She turned to the class to speak, but struggled to find her words. How the fuck were you supposed to tell someone your last words? She took a breath and tried to maintain a brave face. Mitsuko and Yoshimi were watching. The whole class was watching. Even that bastard was watching. She didn't want to show anything but the swaggering Hirono Shimizu of Class 2-B. She looked at the rest of the class and spoke.
"It's been real."
She hoped that her voice didn't shake too much, and after another moment to try to burn the faces of her classmates in her memory, she hustled herself out of the classroom. She wasn't willing to test Sakamochi's claim that they'd get shot for loitering. Not that she was too excited about leaving the school, either. For all she knew, Iijima had gotten some kind of gun, already shot Eto and Oda, and was waiting for whoever came out next to kill them too.
Hirono rushed out the front door of the school and ran off into the island. She hadn't gotten shot on the way out. At least there was that.

Carefully, she slid the bag over one shoulder. She evaluated a classroom full of vaguely familiar faces with gentle eyes meeting any lingering stares. Her expression briefly melted when she saw one boy in a lone corner that she was committed to waiting for.
That moment passed. Before she left she took the time to bow. Hands clasped, nose shy of parallel to the floor.
"Thank you for everything. Goodbye."
She meant it. She specifically avoided making eye contact again as she straightened and headed out.

Two minutes passed, and Shogo was called next. He rose from his seat and crossed the back wall, taking the long route all the way on the other side of the class.
Shogo dropped a wad of paper into Kiriyama's lap as he passed by and continued his exit without a word.
He grabbed his bag and smirked at Sakamochi and the soldiers while on his way out.

A lot happened before his time came.
Yuichiro peered through his fingers as his pencil landed on Tadakatsu’s desk. His heart nearly burst at the grateful smile he got in return. The life-or-death situation they found themselves seemed to disappear for the briefest of moments, only to crash down back on his head when he thought he saw a soldier moving towards him. It was only a trick of his imagination, but enough to cement him in reality.
As he waited for everyone to finish, another sheet of paper, folded into a plane, landed on his desk. He looked around, still sweating bullets at the thought of drawing more attention to himself, and saw Yahagi-san looking back at him. Why had she thrown a paper plane at him?
He saw a scrawl of penmanship in-between the creases, and realised this was a note. He unfolded it, reading it carefully. It was in English. He wasn’t great at English, or most school subjects, but he got the gist.
This was really steamy.
His hand instinctively went to his head, rubbing at his hair. He couldn’t translate it properly, but he got enough of it to make him feel as awkward as you could in such a situation. He looked back at Yahagi-san. She was still looking right at him, her swivelling eyes lost on Yuichiro.
Did she- did she want to get together?
“Takiguchi Yuichiro.”
It took him a moment to realise that his name had been called. “Yes!” he shouted, shooting to his feet. It took him another moment to realise he was supposed to be leaving and not trying to remember the discussion topic. He hurried towards the front of the class, turning back only for a moment to give Tadakatsu one last look.
He wanted to look reassuring, that with the power of friendshp they would get through this, but all he could do was make pleading eyes.

Mizuho shot to her feet when her name was called next having thought, or perhaps hoped, that she might be towards the end of the list, that she might be allowed to linger in this space between her old life and the Program itself for a little longer.
She had nothing to say to her class as a whole, at least nothing that would’ve mattered or meant anything to the vast majority of them.
Instead, Mizuho made a beeline for Kaori, who’d sunk low in her desk. Quickly taking the other girl’s hand into her own and drew a symbol to match the one given to herself and Megumi. Now, they could all be protected from the evil charms of this game.
“Never give up.” Mizuho whispered, raising her left hand to show their shared mark, a sign of their intertwined fortunes, before quickly sprinting to the front to snatch her bag and vanish through the classroom door.

Once the roll call started, Kyoichi anxiously waited for his name to be called. He hadn't needed to wait long; only a handful of others hand been ushered out by the time his own name came up.
"Kyoichi Motobuchi"
He practically leapt from his seat at the sound of his own name. He wasn't ready, not even a little, but he also couldn't stomach waiting another second. His willpower was failing badly, and he was barely keeping a lid on his everything as it threatened to boil over. He took the bag and booked it from the room and down the hall, not sparing an eye for any of his classmates. He hoped he wouldn't see most any of them again. He hoped none of them could see how unraveled he'd become, how easy a target he probably now was. He'd hidden it as best he could, but his best felt painfully inadequate. A feeling he was all too familiar with.
The dam finally burst as he bolted out the door. Tears of panic, pain, grief. But he couldn't stop moving now.
He fled into the woods, doing his best to breathe between desperate, ugly sobs.

The process of how their school got picked was random and so was the process of getting called to receive their bags and leave the classroom.
Hiroshi anxiously waited for his name to be called while watching the classmates ahead of him slowly getting called and leaving the building. The gang in their corner has received the note, and he hoped Kiriyama on the other side of the room has also seen the note about meeting at the most northern part of the island.
Then, Hiroshi's name was called and he picked up his heavy bag and then left the school building without a word.

I'm so glad to be back !
Kazuo Kiriyama picked up the note that had deposited on his lap and discreetly unfolded it. His eyes scanned across the words for a brief moment before he tore it up.
Then when his name was called he stood, collected his pack and left the school.

“...Yoshio Akamatsu!”
At the sound of his name being called, Yoshio stood up. He made his way from the splendid isolation in the back corner up to the front of the room.
Fear ate away at the back of his mind, threatening to chew its way to the forefront. No amount of rationalizations he made could prepare him for being sent out into the island. Death had never felt more real.
As the soldier hurled his bag at him, Yoshio exited the school without saying a word.

"Chisato Matsui."
She almost felt herself flinch at the sound of her name coming out of that horrid man's mouth and she gritted her teeth for a few moments. She glanced at Shinji for a brief moment and she wondered what was going through his head. She didn't have enough time to ponder on thoughts and she didn't want to end up a corpse for waiting too long. Besides, she didn't want any of the remaining students to be traumatizing once again.
She got up from her seat, walked by Shinji's desk without looking at him again and she took her bag without any resistance, gripping onto it as if it was the most important thing in the whole world to her. She glanced back at the other students with a hint of sadness in her eyes.
"Good luck, everyone." She smiled weakly.
She then bolted out of there, needing to breathe. She had felt overwhelmingly suffocated in that room.

The wait was the worst part.
Takako had her exit strategy, at least as much as she could given how little she knew about the island itself. She just needed to get going. The longer she waited, the more time her classmates had to set up an ambush. There were definitely those among the first students who would; Kiriyama-san was cold enough.
But finally Takako heard her own name. She stood up, back straight, head held high, showing no sign of fear or weakness. She walked forward with the calm and grace of an athlete approaching the block. This was not just another competition. But in a way, it was.
Takako took her bag and turned back as she left, giving one last look of stoic defiance at Sakamochi. Whatever came next, she was not afraid of him, nor would she let herself be. She glanced back at the class, gaze hovering over a few of the other boys and girls, maybe for the last time.
Takako stepped outside, looping around the school a few meters. She spent 30 seconds doing quick stretches. Not as much as she'd like, but enough to tide her over for now. She assumed the position, like she had thousands of times before, runners block or no. She took a deep breath. Then another. Then she broke into a sprint, disappearing into the distance within moments.
Takako Chigusa was smart, if not the smartest.
She was strong, if not the strongest.
But Takako Chigusa was the fastest person in school, and she dared anyone on this island to catch her.

It was rough waiting for half the class to leave the class before her, but by the time Sakamochi called Mayumi's name, she had enough time to really think things through. She simply stood up straight, walked gracefully to the front, took her bag, and left the room.
She thought about who had already left the class. There were delinquents like Kiriyama and Souma who had left, plus athletes like Kawada and Tanizawa. Who was Mayumi against all of them? She was a normal girl in moderate physical shape. What would matter was what was inside her bag.
As she neared the door, she looked inside the bag and found a handgun. Ok, that made up for the deficit she had. Now she had a real chance.
Mayumi stopped before the door frame. There was always a chance that someone could be nearby ready to attack, especially if they got a gun too. Mayumi breathed in and out, the words of her meditation cassette playing in her mind.
Mayumi slowly stepped into the door frame, and then turned to the side and bolted. She ran along the side of the school building, and once she was free of it, she began to run in a zig zag towards the woods. She had heard about the serpentine movement from a guy she met at a club who bragged about all these ways to survive in combat. He said he was looking to join the military, but he came off more like one of those military otaku Mayumi didn't engage with.
Still, that guy was right, and even though she heard nothing, Mayumi entered the forest assured no one was shooting at her.
Now was where things really mattered. If Mayumi made the right choices, then she could change her life forever. If she didn't, then everything she had put herself through was for nothing.
This was her chance to get everything she wanted, so Mayumi was ready to obtain it.

"Fumiyo Fujiyoshi."
She'd been watching everyone leave with bated breath. It was always the worst feeling, not being one of the first ones picked. Who knows what was waiting for her outside? Maybe there was someone who had a gun and would just shoot her dead the second she walked out of that door. Maybe she'd find Mayumi dying, shot by someone. Or maybe she'd just be able to go. If she had been one of the first, there wouldn't be that uncertainty.
Still. She wasn't going to let that happen to her. No jackass was gonna shoot her dead. So she took her bag, glanced back at the few remaining in the room, and then ran as fast as she could out of the door and around the corner, glancing around like a rabbit for the slightest glimpse of human movement.
Once she was certain nobody was going to shoot at her, she chanced opening her bag. Inside was a handgun. Picking it up, Fumiyo stared at it for a few moments. It was loaded, and she'd see if it was ready to fire soon enough.
But it was a guarantee that she wasn't going to die.

"Mitsuru Numai."
That didn't take long. Mitsuru figured after the stunt he'd pulled, him and Shuya would be the last ones leaving, if they left at all. Hell, even after the note and the refusal to write- Nah, they didn't catch the note, Boss is smart, tore it up. For our eyes only. He's got a plan, he'll get us out of here. Still, Mitsuru pushed his luck, and he's still here. Meant this Sakimochi fucker was just a paper tiger. He'll get his, even if Mitsuru didn't make it to see it.
Getting out of his chair was sloppier than he'd liked, his leg was still shaking after everything, and he'd almost tripped over his heels. He composed himself and took a deep breath. Gotta be like the Boss, calm and cold, ready for anything. Fights weren't scary, this weren't nothing new. He needed to calm down. Stakes were higher, but he'd make it out. Boss'll know something. At least six other people here are smart too, Shinji, or one of the bookworms, they'll figure something out. Uniforms picked the wrong class.
He took one last glance of the class. Not everyone was like that. Everyone was scared, besides Kazuo, or that creepy fucking transfer kid, Shogo. Some of them were gonna try some shit. Mitsuru knew Shogo would be one. Maybe frog boy. That skeevy bitch Mitsuko, definitely. Countless more were just going to lose their shit and shut down. Not directly dangerous, wouldn't be hard to kick some crybaby's ass, but indirectly, either trying to lug their stupid ass out of danger, or their wailing catching the attention of someone with less than good intentions. Mitsuru had to be careful.
By the time he turned around, one of the uniforms tossed his bag at him hard enough to nearly topple him. He caught himself again, and stepped up to the bastard. Not too close, mind you, didn't want a bullet to the gut, or a rifle butt to the face, but close enough.
"くそったれ."
He saw the bastard's face change. He could read the room, he was pushing his luck enough already. He glanced at the class once more, and made his departure.

In the moment when Yuichiro looked back at her, Yoshimi thought "Ugh, I want to die." But not really, you know? But then --
"Yoshimi Yahagi."
No, no. She didn't want to be sent out into the night with a weapon -- with other people who had weapons. Please don't send me out there.
Hirono had put on a brave face, but she was much tougher than Yoshimi was.
There was nothing she could do; she was rooted to her seat at the front of the class. The soldiers looked at her. That weird man looked at her. Yoshimi dug her fingernails into her palm to keep herself from crying in front of these older men who were bearing down on her. Robotically, she stood and moved to the front. They dropped the day pack into her hands and with it, her heart sank. She looked out at the people who were left in the room, but zeroed in on Mitsuko and Yoji. She couldn't muster any words as Hirono had so she just looked at them with her glistening eyes, tightened her grip on the bag, and left.
As she left the room, she walked down a hallway with the exit door at the end. The door to one of the rooms in the hallway was ajar and she peaked in, slowing her walk just a little bit. A few other Special Defense Forces soldiers were milling about, chatting, drinking from mugs, and eating what looked like muffins. Some computers were visible behind them. Her heel met the ground and very slowly pushed to her toe. One of the men, who didn't look much older than the boys in her class, looked over. A second man noticed the first was staring at something and looked as well. The first soldier gave her a look of pity, but the other leered.
"Keep moving, baby," said the leering soldier, who grinned and mimicked shooting her with his hand in the shape of a gun.
Her heart sped up and she started walking faster towards the exit, eventually breaking out into a sprint when she reached the door, and running out into the inky night. She wanted to wait in the forest, but she was too afraid. Anyone could have been waiting by the door and her legs carried her as fast as her thoughts.
