Lincoln Guenther

Name: Lincoln Guenther
Gender: Male
Age: 18
Grade: Senior
Hobbies and Interests: Basketball, cooking and baking, judo, bass guitar

Gift: Soul Sphere
Power Details: Lincoln was born with a glowing white orb that is currently around the size and weight of a basketball. He can remotely control it and perceives sound and sight out of in all directions simultaneously. He can also vocalise through it, sounding like his voice but with an echoey reverb effect. It can float up to a height of 5 meters, move up to 20 meters per second (though utilising top speed does quickly tire Lincoln, akin to sprinting), and emits heat similar to Lincoln's body temperature. The sphere is tangible: its outer composition is similar to that of a human skull, though denser and harder than normal, but its weight relative to its size suggests that it's hollow. However, it does not show any signs of internal fluids, organs, or indeed anything that shows up on scans beyond a heat signature.
Limitations and Drawbacks: Lincoln cannot turn off the sensory ability of the soul sphere at any time. While he has had a lifetime to get used to having two points of perspective with hearing and seeing, as well as adjust to the spherical nature of the viewpoint, he still needs to use sensory deprivation containers for some tasks. For example, while his main body sleeps his soul sphere remains conscious, so he requires a sensory deprivation container to allow the sphere viewpoint to enter a proxy sleep-state. Storing the sphere in low-quality containers is uncomfortable, likeable to wearing cheap headphones for too long, and trapping his sphere is emotionally distressing. Given Lincoln’s inability to easily stop his sphere from receiving input, he is susceptible to typical sensory overload like too loud music or bright lights. The spherical nature of the viewpoint can also be problematic: without a frame of reference, such as a distinctive landmark or Lincoln looking with his eyes, it can be difficult to determine where what the sphere sees is relative to it. It also causes increasing exhaustion, nausea, and eventually death the further Lincoln is from it, with effects beginning at 50 meters and predicted to be fatal at around four times that, though physical barriers between him and the sphere do not affect this. He suffers sympathetic harm if it's damaged: no localised injuries will appear, but he will suffer corresponding pain and fatigue throughout his body. Despite it being the sphere that's damaged, Lincoln has never experienced pain occurring specifically in it: it always feels like the pain is in his body. Damage to the sphere does affect its mobility, but this is due to Lincoln finding it harder to move straight while hurt and tired. While the sphere is relatively durable, sufficient force by conventional means will scratch or crack it similar to a human skull. It doesn't bruise or bleed, but it regenerates cuts and cracks at a rate comparable to bones healing, ie. slowly. It will scar if the injury is deep enough, and there are a few of these present from Lincoln's early years. It is unclear what removing whole chunks of it rather than only surface injuries would do, but given the amount of force this would require, Lincoln would likely be incapacitated if not killed immediately. Its symmetrical shape and lack of any discernable internal features suggest that it is unlikely that the sphere has any distinctive weak spots, though. It is uncertain what the damage limit for the sphere 'dying' is, but presumably enough to kill a human by head injury would be sufficient. Since Lincoln suffers proportional harm, he would almost certainly expire at the same time.

Appearance: Lincoln is very much on the small side, standing 5’3” and weighing 126 lbs. It is speculated that his small size is due to his growth being split between himself and his sphere, given that it has grown proportionally with him as he’s aged. Despite appearing very slight, he is in good shape from his hobbies and has a deceptive amount of muscle on his lean build. He is Caucasian with lightly tanned skin, and has dark brown hair that he wears in a fauxhawk hairstyle. He has soft, rounded features, giving him a babyface appearance, along with a nose that turns up towards the tip. His eyes are brown, and he has a beauty mark between his left eye and nose.

He dresses for comfort over style, usually wearing baggy hoodies and jeans with sneakers, as he gets cold easily due to his lean build. Colour-wise, his wardrobe contains a lot of reds and greys. He is almost always carrying a specially made black backpack for his soul sphere, where he can store it in a sensory depriving padded location when he doesn’t want it out in public. When he was abducted, Lincoln was wearing a hoodie with a red bottom that fades to grey at the top through a flame design, light grey jeans and white sneakers, and also carrying his signature backpack.

Background:
  • Lincoln was born in Bend, Oregon, four minutes after his twin sister, Mercedes. He was clutching his soul sphere, and hence has had his gift his entire life. His parents originally only expected a daughter, so when they found out they were having twins they scrambled to come up with a new name, and only years later realised that they were both named after cars.
  • His father, Desmond, works as an accountant with a local tax firm, and his mother, Maria, is a sous chef at a high-end restaurant. Maria mostly worked odd catering jobs while the kids were growing up, but entered the food industry full time after the kids reached middle school in order to pursue a dream she’d held for years.
  • Lincoln is usually babied by the rest of his family, due to his small size and being the youngest. He finds this highly embarrassing, and regularly tries to assert his independence by insisting on doing things without help or resisting displays of affection. This overprotective upbringing has contributed to Lincoln’s nervous personality.
  • Despite wanting to not be coddled, he tends to defer to Mercedes in situations he’s unsure in, out of instinct and because he finds it an easy way to manage his nervousness. He doesn’t enjoy this habit, however, and would prefer to stop doing it.
  • A major factor to his nervousness was a string of bullying incidents in his youth, which culminated in middle school when the tormentors used his soul sphere as a basketball. This was an incredibly disorienting and uncomfortable experience for Lincoln, and he still is uncomfortable recalling the event.
  • When he decided to stop being seen as a weakling in response to the incident, he took up basketball as a display of defiance and to show that his small size didn’t stop him from succeeding. Having spent his whole life handling a ball, he thought he would be a natural. He wasn’t, but he stayed dedicated and now plays as a point guard. Though he is not an exceptional player, he manages to compensate for his height with skill. He is also quite vocal against the rules on no gifts in high school sports due to effectively having to play half-blind.
  • He also took up judo at this time, not wanting people to be able to overpower him. He has kept up with it consistently since starting, motivated by his insecurity. He is quite a capable judoka at this point, though he still underestimates himself. He focuses on judo for self-defence rather than competition.
  • Lincoln has been playing the bass guitar since he was ten, getting into the instrument after experimenting with Desmond’s. Although he isn’t as diligent at it as he is with sports, and stopped going to lessons after his freshman year of high school due to waning interest, he still plays it on a regular basis. Musically, he enjoys rock and heavy metal.
  • Lincoln performs average to slightly below average at school, due to a general disinterest in academics. This is a source of contention with his parents, who don’t want him to slack off from schooling and limit his options, and also causes unfavourable comparisons to his sister. He gets along with many of his peers due to his cooperative nature, though his snarky humour has rubbed some the wrong way.
  • Lincoln has not experienced romantic or sexual attraction to any of his classmates. While he is not familiar with the terms asexuality or aromantic, he would most likely identify with these labels if he encountered them. He keeps this to himself, as he does not want to discuss his lack of sexuality with his parents or sister, and is uncomfortable bringing it up with friends.
  • Lincoln also shares his mother’s passion for food, regularly helping prepare family meals or doing so by himself. He particularly enjoys baking, with a penchant for savoury bakes. He is interested in becoming a chef like her, though his parents are more insistent that he go to college first. Desmond feels this way because he thinks he’ll get a more stable career that way, while Maria objects because she knows how tough the food industry can be, and isn’t sure her little boy could handle it.
Personality: Lincoln is a nice guy to people who haven’t antagonised him, but he is also skittish and prone to feeling insecure. He gets defensive when people treat him as incapable or small, and is not afraid to stand up for himself if he feels persecuted. He also gets increasingly nervous when he loses track of his soul sphere’s location. Otherwise in a relaxed setting, he is easy-going and rides along with the flow of conversation, though he rarely opts to lead the discussion. He also has a dry sense of humour, and regularly indulges in snark and sarcasm.

Heya Slam. Got some points for you with Lincoln:
Limitations and Drawbacks: Lincoln cannot turn off the sensory ability of the soul sphere at any time. While he has had a lifetime to get used to having two points of perspective with hearing and seeing, as well as adjust to the spherical nature of the viewpoint, he still needs to use sensory deprivation containers for some tasks. For example, while sleeping his main body enters a sleeplike state, but his soul sphere will remain conscious, and so he requires a sensory deprivation container to allow the sphere viewpoint to enter a proxy sleep-state through the night. Storing the sphere in low-quality containers is uncomfortable though, likeable to wearing cheap headphones for too long, and trapping his sphere can be quite emotionally distressing. Additionally, given Lincoln’s inability to easily stop his sphere from receiving input, he is susceptible to typical forms of sensory overload, like too loud music or bright lights.

The spherical nature of the viewpoint can also be problematic. Without a frame of reference, such as a distinctive landmark or Lincoln looking at the same point with his eyes, it can be difficult to determine where the entity the sphere is seeing actually is relative to it. Surrounding the sphere with high activity, such as being in the middle of a moving crowd, can become very disorienting.

It also causes increasing exhaustion, nausea, and eventually death the further Lincoln is from it, with effects beginning at a range of 50 meters and predicted to be fatal at around four times that length, though physical barriers between him and the sphere do not affect this. He will also suffer sympathetic harm if it's damaged: no localised injuries will appear, but he will suffer corresponding pain and fatigue throughout his body.
First, go ahead and compress these paragraphs together (it's ugly, but it's the format), and delete the bit about "surrounding the sphere with high activity" since that's already covered by the sentence about sensory overload.

Second, I have some questions regarding how the Soul Sphere suffers damage: does his Soul Sphere actually show the damage that it sustains itself (eg, by losing mass or "chunks" of itself)? What exactly can damage it (is it susceptible to conventional weaponry)? Is it impaired in any way by damage it sustains (akin to damage to someone's body)? How quickly does it heal from damage it sustains? Is there a predicted threshold at which point the Soul Sphere would "die" from damage it takes (and presumably take Lincoln with it)?

The only other bit that stuck out to me is this:
Other Skills: Self-defence
I'd specify this as "Judo" rather than a vague "self-defense" (that can mean a lot of things).

Lemme know when you've got that done and I'll give Lincoln another look! :3

Edited.
[+] Changelog
  • Compressed the paragraphs in spite of ugliness (it's beautiful on the inside).
  • Deleted redundant high activity sentence.
  • Added two extra sentences to power details explaining that its tangible and with a bonelike composition, but mystery substance inside (that may or may not be his soul, too existential for me to decide)
  • Added a (long, sorry) chunk to limitations and drawbacks elaborating on soul sphere damage mechanics.
  • Shortened the limitations and drawbacks section wording (without changing the content) to compensate for the extra lines.
  • Changed self-defence to Judo.
