Promise not to watch me go beyond the corner

Death thread

North of the residential area, at the foot of the northern peak, a grove of tangerine trees grows. Unlike the forest that blankets much of the island, the trees here are in neat rows, and fruit may be found on them. This also means that wildlife is especially abundant here, as birds come for the fruit, and feral cats come for the birds.

((Mayumi Tendou continued from I'd like to do just whatever I like the whole day long))

After leaving the shrine, Mayumi and Takiguchi had spent their time cautiously walking through the island. They didn't know how many people were running around at night, and they likewise had to make sure they weren't stumbling into any of the danger zones. There was a clear path from the shrine to the tangerine grove, so they had elected to try and make their way there.

By the time they had arrived at the orchard, the announcement had just finished. Mayumi was mortified by hearing a lot of the names on this one. A lot of the friendlier girls from back home died this round, such as Yuka, Satomi, and Haruka. That delinquent girl Mitsuko was also dead, as were people like Izumi, Tsukioka, and Kuramoto. Once they had checked off the danger zones, they had continued their walk.

Walking through the night had been a bit tiring, and Mayumi was hoping to find somewhere in the orchard to rest for a bit. She had conserved most of her energy from yesterday, but even then, she was feeling exhausted.

"Hey, Takiguchi-kun," she said as they entered the orchard. "Do you think we could find a place to-"

Mayumi stopped when she saw a figure in the distance. There was a girl's body lying on the ground, her arms crossed and covered in flowers. It was the first corpse Mayumi had seen since waking up on this island, but the sight of the girl had really stopped her in her tracks.

((Yuichiro Takiguchi continued from I'd like to do just whatever I like the whole day long))

Yuchiro was dead on his feet. Not as dead as his eight classmates who had just joined the heavenly choir, but still pretty dead. His shoulder ached from lugging around all his supplies, his chest hurt from being pushed far beyond its usual paces, and his feet cringed from traversing the rough terrain wearing only unfit school shoes. Whoever invented hiking needed a serious talking to.

He kept these complaints to himself, along with his tears for his fallen friends. It had been fine when it was just him at the lighthouse, he could weep like a little baby there, but he had to look strong for Tendou-san. He didn’t try to say anything to comfort her, because what was he supposed to say? But he could still save her the job of having to clean up his little crybaby tear stains.

What made matters worse was that, even as almost half of his friends were dead, there was a relief for the people who were still alive. Katsu-kun was still out there, still waiting for him. He was still here, somehow. Yahagi-san, Shimizu-san, Tendou-san: all the people he’d met so far and hadn’t castrated were still kicking. It made him sick to be happy for all of that. He shouldn’t be able to be happy about anything after even just one of his friends died, especially when he was the murderer.

But he kept it all bottled up, wearing a reassuring half-smile for Tendou-san. Girls were pretty sensitive to this sort of thing, you know?

When they reached the orchard, Mayumi spotted the body before he did. It was walking up to the corpse of Yukie, looking into her lifeless eyes, that shattered his delusions of a comforting smile.

It was easy to talk about putting on a brave front for people, until the world reminded you of your reality.

Mayumi stared at Yukie's body. It was treated respectfully, so perhaps one of Yukie's friends had been here when she died. She wiped a tear from the corner of her eye as she looked at her former friend.

As she did, she glanced over and saw there was another body not too far away. Kayoko Kotohiki. Mayumi grimaced at the sight. She wasn't particularly close to Kayoko. One of Mayumi's dates had taken her to a bar that Kayoko was working at. Apparently it was her family's bar, but Kayoko had said nothing about Mayumi being there. She didn't ask about the date or why Mayumi's date was calling her Mamiko. Just a token acknowledgement and then they moved on.

Mayumi knelt down near both girls and gave a quick prayer. She was used to praying for better things to come her way, but now she could only ask the same for her former friends and classmates.

She knelt back up and turned to Takiguchi.

"Takiguchi-kun," she began. "Was it like this when Niida-kun died? Was it as devastating?"

Yuichiro was transfixed by Yukie and Kayako’s lifeless forms. It didn’t matter that he had seen a body before. It didn’t matter that he had caused a body before. These were girls that, less than three days ago, he had been watching go about their daily lives without a care in the world. He would’ve graduated with them in a while, and if he was lucky he would’ve kept in touch. Probably not, because he didn’t talk to them much, but he wanted to stay friends with everybody forever.

That was what was so horrible about people dying. There was nothing more to their story, no more chance for whatever events they would’ve shaped with their presence. In anime, you only knew people for a short while, a little microcosm of their fictional lives. Often, people dying were just nameless mooks, meaningless cannon fodder for the hero to mow down in a blaze of glory and heroics. When Kenshiro gave people the touch of death, they were always vile criminals who did horrible things, and existed only as that. When Shinji fought angels, it was because they wanted to destroy the whole world. They were just bad guys, so it was OK to kill them. Even when someone more important died, you had only known them for a handful of twenty minute episodes.

Real people weren't like that. They had whole stories that Yuichiro had gotten to know, even if only a little, and existed beyond his observation. And now they wouldn’t make any new memories, or have any kids, or enrich people’s lives with their kind smiles. This was just a nothingness, an end, a terminal destination in their road to changing the world just by being alive, but the scene and story wasn't moving on. These bodies in front of him represented so much that had happened, and so much wasted opportunity. Had there been any meaning to their deaths? Had a hero mowed them down to save some of his other friends? He had no way of knowing, but how such a reality could exist, he couldn't fathom.

Yuichiro tried to answer Mayumi’s question. He tried to move his mouth, form his words, say something with any meaning. But it was impossible. Sounds caught in his throat, tears choked behind his eyes. He couldn’t start bawling like this, not in front of her. He still wanted to be strong. Had to be strong for her sake.

His trembling hand reached into his pocket, pulling out the pack of cigarettes from the lighthouse. Wild Seven was the brand, and he pulled out a single stick of nicotine. He retrieved the lighter with his other hand, just as unsteady as the first. He fumbled with the unfamiliar device, trying to ignite the cigarette held between his teeth. Finally the spark burst to life, and the smell of smoke wafted out of the front of his mouth, and up past his neck-tie headband.

He tried to inhale, but only spluttered at the unfamiliar chemical invasion. He kept at it though, determined to pull off his charade for Mayumi's sake. He took another puff, just as uncomfortable as the first, but held in the smoky scent as his face started to flush.

“Yep.” he replied, tiny voice forced through held breath, as he looked away into the Tangerine grove while the tremors in his hands spread throughout his body.

The light of Yuichiro's cigarette was small and barely noticeable in the morning sun.

The hannya would have found them anyway.

((Noriko Nakagawa continued from A Home Of Sorts))

After spending the better part of the night in the woods, her hoodie and jeans were a good deal dirtier, but she paid it little notice. Too important were the two classmates less than a few dozen meters in front of her.

Yuichiro Takiguchi. A small boy with a good head on his shoulders. Someone who believed in others. Noriko was sure that even in this situation, he might be one of the most likely members of the class worth believing in.

Mayumi Tendou. A classmate who had it hard in school thanks to some horrible stuff spread about her. Noriko had always tried to give the other girl a smile and condemned anyone repeating these baseless accusations. Someone sweet like Mayumi was without a doubt innocent.

From her hiding place behind a tree, Noriko spend some more moments watching the pair conversing about two corpses they had stumbled upon. Corpses Noriko recognized as well. Corpses that could no longer hurt her, so she banned all further thought about them. Right now, it were the living who mattered.

Logically speaking, there was no reason not to join up with the two.

Noriko could throw the mask away and step out from hiding. She could say something to not surprise the two before coming closer. They might wonder about her clothes, but showing her bullet wound should explain more than enough. Telling how she got the wound might requiere tweaking the truth a bit, but in the end, they would accept her, and she would finally have a shoulder to cry on.

For a few seconds, Noriko allowed the scene to play a little further in her head.

After that brief moment of security, she stepped away from the tree and quickly hid behind the next tree, getting about five meters closer to the pair.

A few more trees, and Noriko would be close enough to start shooting.

Takiguchi pulled out a pack of cigarettes and fumbled as he lit one. Mayumi could see he was struggling to remain composed and respond to her question. She inhaled the scent of the cigarette. She had been offered cigarettes on some of her dates, but she always rejected it. Her parents wouldn't believe she was at cram school if she came home smelling like tobacco. It was easier to ask the guys politely to not smoke in front of her or to move to non-smoking sections of restaurants.

She took in the scent, now knowing it didn't matter. Takiguchi never looked like a smoker, but clearly the stress of this place was turning him into one. She was half tempted to ask for one as well. If she was going to die here, she may as well have her first cigarette and proudly declare such an act of youthful rebellion on her part. But on the other hand, it probably wouldn't do much for her. It certainly wasn't doing anything for Takiguchi.

Of course, with his trouble keeping composure, Mayumi started to feel bad about asking him about Niida. He was likely remembering that horrible moment upon seeing Yukie and Kayoko. Even if she did get off the island, the sight of these dead girls was likely to follow her for the rest of her life. They'd just be faces reflected back at her in a glass of champagne. It wasn't going to be easy to get past all of this, and the longer she stayed alive, the more it would hurt by the end.

All Mayumi could do was put a hand on Takiguchi's shoulder and slightly rub him.

"Sorry. I shouldn't have asked," she told him.

She breathed in, then out.

"We're going to be okay," she said. "I know we have a chance."

Takiguchi said nothing. He took the cigarette out from between his teeth, the filter squashed from his biting into it, and held it between two fingers like a space cowboy. He let out a long breath, smoke flittering in every direction out from his mouth and nose. His eyes were clearly watering, but the ash was not to blame.

He had wanted to look cool for Tendou-san, but in the end, she had only felt pity for him. Her hand on his shoulder, soft as a pillow, was an act of kindness, not a plea. It was like the hand on his shoulder his mother would give after he locked himself in the bathroom, because he needed to get away from the pictures of his dad and his grandma’s lost eyes for five futile seconds. ‘I’m fine,’ he would smile back at her, ‘just a little stomach ache.’ he would lie.

“I’m fine.” he said to Mayumi, smiling but forgetting to turn back. “It’ll be OK. I’ll protect you.” He held the grip of Niida-san’s uzi, an acknowledgement for Mayumi’s sake, but the tips of his fingers only licked the metal. There was no sincerity to any of it.

He put the cigarette back in his mouth, its acrid taste still making him want to gag while the nicotine began to take effect.

“What do you think happened to them?” he asked, a filler question to drown out the smoke, asked without a yearning for the truth.

For a moment Mayumi seemed close to looking in Noriko's direction, but then she just got closer to Yuichiro.

Somewhere, a cat meowed.

Having her head completely covered by hoodie and mask impacted both her hearing and her field of vision. Because of the former, Noriko couldn't make out what the two were saying. Because of the latter, she couldn't see where the cat was.

Neither thing mattered.

With agile steps, Noriko left her current hiding spot, starting her way to the next tree.

The Beretta in her hand suddenly felt a little hotter, as if it was heating up in anticipation.

Mayumi continued to quietly breathe in and out as she gently rubbed Takiguchi's shoulder. It's weird how nice it felt to touch someone else. She could only remember a few times she felt a genuine hug or a nice pat on the head. Comforting someone like this was starting to feel kind of nice.

"I don't know," Mayumi said in regard to Takiguchi's question about what happened to Yukie and Kayoko. "I guess another friend of Yukie-chan's was here if she's dressed like this. Maybe it-"

That's when Mayumi heard the sound of a cat meowing. It was completely bizarre to hear such a thing. Why would a cat be there?

Mayumi snapped her head around to see where the cat could be, but instead, she thought she saw something larger than a cat moving between the trees. Mayumi clutched her gun a little tighter and removed her free hand from Takiguchi's shoulder.

"Takiguchi-kun, did you hear that?" she quietly asked. "I think someone's here."

“Huh?” Yuichiro replied, drawn out of his spiralling state. The cigarette hung at a sharp angle from his agape mouth.

He looked in the same direction as Mayumi but couldn’t see anything. He scanned the grove for signs of life, but there didn’t seem to be anyone but themselves. The gun remained at his side, his hands never venturing closer to it.

“Hello?” he called out, still oblivious to any cause for hesitation. “Is someone there? It’s OK, we’re not going to hurt you!”

For a few seconds, Yuichiro's words caused no reaction.

Then, with unfitting casual speed, someone emerged from a tree not that far away. But even a closer distance would have provided little new information, for the person in question had her face hidden behind a hannya mask.

After a moment, the hannya took two more steps forward. Her face was slightly downwards, giving the impression that the mask was crying.

But there was little time for such musings as the hannya raised a Beretta M92F - a modern weapon clashing with the traditional mask - and pulled the trigger.

The world turned into noise.

Mayumi continued to look out where she heard the noise. Takiguchi called out to whoever was there. Mayumi quietly clicked the safety off her gun. Something told her this was going to be a problem.

Of course, it became apparent when a hooded figure wearing a mask stepped out. Judging by the height and body type, Mayumi figured it was a girl. She couldn't tell who though. She figured it had to be one of the shorter girls left. Could it be Chisato? Or Yukiko?

Before Mayumi could figure it out, the figure raised a gun. Mayumi gasped.

"Run!" she shouted to Takiguchi.

The masked figure fired. Mayumi dashed towards the nearest tree she could find. She quickly turned back to see where the hannya freak was and where Takiguchi had gone. Mayumi raised the gun to where the figure was and opened fire.

She had had a whole day to study her gun's manual. Now was the time to prove it.

“E-Eh?”

Yuichiro wasn’t sure what had happened. The person had stepped out, but it hadn’t been a human face. He must’ve thought it was a joke or something, and maybe he wanted to say something to them, but then they were shooting at him. The sound of the gunshot hit play on the VCR in his mind, starting the show of Niida-san's death. He saw the blood flowing out of his friend all over again. The dying eyes looked at him in panic and pain, questioning why he had done it. Why he had been so stupid and careless.

In the distance Mayumi had shouted something, and he must’ve heard her, because now he was crouched behind a bushy tree. But he still wasn’t sure what was going on because he couldn’t make any sense of it. It was too many thoughts trying to cram through his brain all at once, each bullet restarting the scene of Niida’s death, blocking the route for the thoughts that would allow him to realise what was going on.

He could hear more gunshots behind him, but he didn’t turn to look. His legs trembled below him, as his fingers dug into the leaves of the tree. An inappropriate laugh slithered out of his mouth, the cigarette rolling down to the ground below as a result. It hit his shirt on the way, leaving an ashy stain. The uzi by his side rattled as he shook, and the pistol in his bag did the same. Neither received any acknowledgement that the scene was made for them.

There was that nagging feeling in the back of his head that he really was supposed to be doing something in that situation. It was like when your homework was due tomorrow, but you had forgotten it existed. But for the life of him, he couldn’t think of anything else to do but stand there behind the tree and laugh as Mayumi shot at their demonic assailant.

The distance was farther than earlier, and so the shots went wide.

But the hannya kept on pulling the trigger, even as a bullet from Mayumi flew close to her face.

It was only when her the gun ejected a clicking noise instead of a shot that the hannya retreated back behind the nearest tree, quickly pulling out one of the spare magazines she had deposited in the pockets of her jeans.

During the process of reloading, her hands stopped shaking.

Mayumi fired again at the masked figure. She only had a few shots left before she'd have to reload, and he spare ammo was still in her bag. She still didn't know where Takiguchi had run off to, so she had to find him soon. He didn't appear to be aiding in taking out this masked freak, so she'd have to give him the opportunity to join in.

Mayumi moved slightly, trying to get another shot in. At that moment, a bullet hit the tree, spraying some wood chips in her face. She let out a short cry and stumbled a bit. That was when a second bullet hit her upper chest, causing her to scream much more loudly and fall to the ground.

Mayumi didn't hear any more gun shots from the masked figure, so she began to crawl. Her shirt was getting wet with blood. It appeared to hit her in a really bad area. The pain was immense, and Mayumi was starting to feel weak. She tried to get to a seated position against the next tree.

She finally got a good look at the wound. It was horrendous. She began to hyperventilate.

"Takiguchi-kun!" she cried out.

Mayumi darted her eyes around. Was the masked figure nearby? Where was Takiguchi-kun? Was this really where it ended?

She waited for an answer, but each second dragged on for longer than she anticipated.
