After some discussion, staff has decided that the most fair and consistent way to handle inactivity adoptions to balance both the desire to offer new handlers an opportunity to join the game and existing handlers' potential desire to avoid their character being written for long stretches by others is to make explicit the different options and allow handlers to choose.
By posting in this thread, you agree to allow your character to be put up for adoption should they go terminally inactive, using the procedure found here. If you wish to revoke permission, post here saying so and also PM a staff member to make sure it's known. You may grant or revoke permission at any time, but if an adoption thread has already been made the adoption will stand, and if you grant permission well after going terminally inactive, your character(s) may be killed anyways if staff has already started work on the death.
Characters given up for adoption are transferred entirely to their new handlers. On Mini, only handlers without characters may adopt under the official system. Characters may also be transferred directly when not inactive, but that falls outside the purview of this thread. Inactive handlers get no say in who specifically gets to adopt their character.
Characters will be offered for adoption only in the first third of a game. Beyond that point, they will be killed off, regardless of whether or not their handlers have posted to this thread, bar exceptional circumstances. Additionally, staff reserves the right to kill characters rather than offering them for adoption if there are concerns regarding content and the ability of prospective new handlers to sensitively handle it.
If you do not grant adoption permission here, characters who go inactive will be killed off by staff, typically in a one-shot, typically due either to conflict with other inactives or a tragic accident. Staff do our best to treat inactive characters with respect and make their conclusions worthwhile, but it bears noting that the team is not perfect and while we'll never intentionally take potshots at inactive handlers, we cannot guarantee circumstances or writing will match what might be desired.
