"Can you tell me what month it is?" One of the paramedics in the back of the ambulance, Daryl or whatever, asked Astrid.

"November?" Astrid mumbled.

"And can you tell me what day of the month is it today?" Daryl the paramedic then asked.

Astrid shook her head.

"What about the day of the week?" Daryl asked.

Astrid shook her head.

"What year is it?" Daryl asked.

"2021." Astrid mumbled.

"What hour is it?" Daryl asked.

"The phone said it was almost one." Astrid said.

Daryl wrote something down on his clipboard.

"Okay. Now I'm going to read you a list of five words. You're going to repeat as many of those words as you can. We'll do this with three different lists of words. Ready?" Daryl asked.

Astrid grunted and shrugged. The ambulance ran over a small bump in the road. She winced, crossing her arms.

"Okay. First list: elbow, apple, carpet, saddle, bubble." Daryl said.

"Elbow carpet saddle bapple." Astrid mumbled.

Daryl wrote something down on his clipboard.

Daryl asked about the duffel bag Astrid was holding. She told him that she was carrying a person named Yvette in it, and that she wasn't sure whether Yvette was dead or alive. Then Daryl looked at her like she was crazy, which was rude of him, so she clarified that Yvette's Gift meant that she shrank instead of bled, and that someone exploded a bomb collar in her face. Then Daryl understood.

There was a pack of cops standing around outside near the entrance of hospital waiting for the students to arrive. Astrid did not acknowledge them as she silently shuffled past, covered in blood that mostly wasn't hers. Every step, the loose teeth hidden in her jacket pocket quietly clinked against the glass shard she'd used to cut her own cousin's neck open.

The doctor was all like, "Ok Astrid we're gonna send you in for an MRI scan now because we still aren't sure how concussed you are, and also because facial paralysis can be a sign of stroke, so we're just gonna make sure you aren't having one of those," and Astrid was all like, "Can we do this tomorrow instead, because I'm really tired and want to have a nap please," and the doctor was like, "No we can't," and Astrid was like, "Fine," and then the doctor was like, "Oh also we brought you a change of clothes, because your clothes are all super gross, and also you might spontaneously combust or something if you wear all that metal into the MRI machine OHOHOHOH. Also you can/should go have a shower first."

Anyways, that was all actually sort of convenient for Astrid, because now she had the chance to dispose of the murder weapon while she was supposed to be having a shower or whatever.

It was the longest shower Astrid had ever taken in her life. There was a lot of blood to wash off. And also asbestos dust from when August exploded the compound. Didn't want any of that left on her.

There was good news and bad news from the MRI scan.

The good news was that Astrid hadn't had a stroke, and that she didn't seem to be concussed super bad. The bad news was completely unrelated to the concussion. Apparently, the frontal lobe of her brain looked kind of like it had been smooshed slightly a long while ago, and then over time done its best to heal.

Astrid wasn't particularly surprised when they told her the bad news. In fact, she'd already known. She'd figured it out about herself.

That first night, Astrid dreamt that she and Sarah were stuck waiting in a really long checkout line at the supermarket. Sarah was dead in real life now, so that was unfortunate. A lot of people were dead in real life now.

A finger tapped on Astrid's shoulder, and she woke up.

She grunted.

"Sorry, didn't mean to startle ya. I was hoping that maybe you could answer a couple of questions for me," a voice said from a chair pulled up to the side of Astrid's hospital bed.

She rolled over onto her other side and saw that the voice belonged to a cop. His face looked kind of like Joe Pesci's except with a moustache. He was holding a pen and a notebook.

"Like, witness statement stuff?" Astrid mumbled, rubbing her eyes.

"Yeah sure." Moustache Joe Pesci said.

Astrid was silent for a moment.

"I'll try my best," she finally said.

Spencer Ross was in the seat directly to my right. He stood up, and then they shot him too. Then the owl lady told us what the, um, the deal was."

"The deal?"

"What was happening. The death game, the rules. That stuff."

"Do you remember any details?"

"She said that they wanted to find out which of one us was the strongest."

"Anything else? Anything at all could help."

Suddenly, a tear rolled down the right side of Astrid's face. "I'm sorry, I'm not doing this, I can't do this right now, I'm not okay, I'm not okay, I'll see if I'm better tomorrow," she mumbled.

She rolled back over.

It was easy to see why Crispin and Jenelle were friends, she thought, because Crispin and Jenelle seemed a lot alike, and then she started to think about Jenelle, and about what Jenelle had done, and what she'd died saying and who she'd died hurting.

And then she started to weep, quietly enough that nobody would ever know.

It still hurt. Everything that had happened the first day in that dumb fucking room full of dumb fucking meatmoss. It was still so raw. It hurt so much. It was like there was a hook digging up through her sternum, eviscerating her from the inside. That was how much it hurt.

Then a few minutes later, it didn't hurt.

And then a few hours later, it came back for a little while. Then, it went away again.
