Chevy’s dismissal stung like a knife in his side. Acquaintances, not friends. And this was after Lucas had tried to shower Chevy with his generosity as well. What a dick.
Not helping were the thinly concealed complaints from behind the counter. Lucas appreciated that the words had been carefully cut off before coming to blows, because who the hell was this wage slave to start a fight with Lucas, just because he was getting a bit impatient with his order? Well, he had stopped himself, so it was OK he supposed. No need to start something unnecessarily.
The fact that Faith was there the whole while still wasn’t helping. He still wasn’t sure who’s side she’d take if this grew into a full-blown conflict, something Lucas really wanted to avoid. Not because he was in the wrong, or afraid of conflict or anything. It was just because he didn’t need another shouting match in a fast food restaurant added to his list.
Panic was bubbling up in his chest like the soda sitting in the dispenser when a vibration erupted in his pocket. He pulled out his Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (with 1 TB storage, naturally), seeing an insistent text from his friends still waiting outside. ‘What’s the holdup? Joe’s missing his jalapenos!’ it asked, an untyped snicker behind it. Lucas texted back a deft ‘omw’ as he pulled the sandwich away from Johnny.
He took a moment to pause and unclench his chest. If he was leaving now, he wasn’t going to leave looking like he’d been shown up by a guy in a Pinkberry uniform. Not in front of his peers. Not in front of Faith.
“Well, it’s been real running into everyone in this…fine establishment.” he sneered, masking it behind an apathetic expression and a gesticulation. “Faith, you have a great day. Sorry I can’t stick around, but let’s hang out another time. Chevy, glad to make your acquaintance. Maybe some day we can hang out, and I can treat you to something nicer than Pinkberry. If that’s not going to be too upscale for you, anyway. And thank you,” he nodded to Johnny “for your service.”
With that, he offered a charitable, cool, totally-not-forced, smile, and headed for the door, the jingling of the bell serving only to punctuate his exit.
((Lucas Brady continued elsewhere.))
Jinxed It
Chevy could tell that he struck a chord in Lucas. Or someone else might have done the job for him. Maybe Faith.
Too upscale?
What is his definition of "too upscale"? Did Lucas expect Chevy to eat out with him at some random 5-star steakhouse with the other random rich people? Chevy couldn't complain further, since Lucas left the shop.
Chevy already knew what he needed, so Johnny can have a sigh of relief. To be generous, he added some extra dollars to what he was paying for. "Like I said. I just want a meatball marinara to-go. You can have the extra change." Chevy wondered if the kid thought he was from the union. To make sure that the line was still moving along, Chevy sidestepped away from the counter, so that someone else can also get ready to order, while Johnny worked on Chevy's sandwich.
"Never thought the usage of acquaintances was a good word to use to dissociate from someone." Chevy remarked to Faith, though Johnny may have heard this.

Nothing went too much further, thank God. Johnny didn't need to get into trouble with his boss. He was doing good so far, keeping his temper under control here, so he really couldn't afford to screw that shit up. Lucas was still a huge prick, but at least he left now. Couldn't help but get in the last word, obviously. Fuck that guy. Now Johnny could get to Chevy's order. Now that he looked, it looked like he was working at one of the other places here. The froyo place, was it? Whatever. Johnny didn't eat that shit, anyway, so it didn't matter.
Faith hadn't said much, either, which struck Johnny as a bit out of character. She wasn't the type to leave the commentary out. Weird. He wasn't complaining though. "Got it," he said, moving over to get the sandwich ready. And hey, he was making a little more than usual from these two. That was nice. An extra ten bucks didn't hurt anyone, least of all him.

Toby Keith - I Love This Bar
Faith supressed the reflexive urge to check her phone when she saw Lucas send a text on his new phone that looked exactly the same as the last two he'd owned. They shared more than a couple of group DMs- most of them inactive for months- and the phantom sensation of the phone in her pocket humming a few notes of aquarium ASMR occured almost instantaneously.
"Yeah Lucas, see you Monday," she casually shot back. Hard not to see him when they shared half their classes, no senioritis in these bones. She filed a mental note to propose a museum trip with the boys before the month was out, or some thing else along those lines.
She stood aside when Chevy did, noting that they'd formed a decent queue behind them. Ah, classic awkward almost confrontation in a fast food joint. The last time it'd happened Lucas had also been the focal point of it, if Faith's memory wasn't failing her.
"He's not that bad when you get to know him," Faith shot back cheerily, playing with the shape of a smile over her lips. Casual, not too much so. Self-conscious, but measuredly so. "How much longer do you have before you head back to your not-so-upscale job?"

The guy behind the counter was starting to get his sandwich ready. Chevy nodded at him, while other people went about to get their own orders ready.
Chevy couldn't really complain about Lucas that much, since he wasn't even in student council, but he was still the type to act all high and mighty. "He isn't a complete dick, but he's still annoying." Chevy commented, knowing Lucas's behavior just now. "His ego can be the size of his wallet. Cynical, but it's true."
Chevy looked at his phone to check the time, only to see-
"Crap! I would have to jog back to work. If me having to wait until probably another hour, just to eat a cold meatball sandwich is not-so-upscale." Unfortunately, the Pinkberry didn't have a microwave in it's break room. For all of Chevy's complaints, he could blame Lucas for hogging out the line, but he should've went elsewhere. There was the Panda Express, but too many people were there in the lines.
