this cheeses me

Open! Night 3

This ship is a replica of a traditional clipper ship, painstakingly built to recreate the proper design elements and functionality. Originally used for filming and for theme tours in Southeast Asia, it was badly damaged when an inexperienced captain scraped a pier during a storm, and was put into dry dock pending repairs. Ultimately, however, insurance proceedings saw it declared a total write-off and sold for scrap. It has gashes in the sides that have been crudely but competently repaired, and inside the ships has wide expanses of wooden floor spanning two decks. The rigging is the most impressive part, with a crow's nest that serves as the highest point of the arena, should one dare venture up the rope ladder. A rather anachronistic yet fully functional cannon has been mounted on the deck, fixed in the vague direction of a section of outer marina, though only three cannonballs are present, each massive sphere tucked away in the back of the very bottom deck of the ship.

Sat in a bunk, opposite two dead bodies, Gregory Miller sat with a wheel of cheese, carving pieces from it and eating it.

((Gregory Miller continued from Paradise, In A Way))

Munch.

Munch.

Man, this was good cheese. He just had to like, scrape all the bits with bird pecking marks off and hey presto, cheese!

((Amy Barrows-Shaw continued from A Moment of Respite))

Announcements. Same as always, but with some key differences. Seo hadn’t killed anyone; that was a change. RJ and Luciano still seemed to be alive. That was good too. Their team had the second most people still running, but only two kills, just like Jewel had said. She supposed that meant she hadn’t lied to her. That was good. The Crabs and Krakens were the ones to watch out for. Too bad she didn’t know their team colours, that would’ve been useful information. Maybe she could ask Jewel.

But it didn’t matter right now. All that mattered was the person on the other side of the window.

She could only see the side of his face, but it didn’t matter. She didn’t recognise him, as was all too common. Didn’t see a black bandanna either, so that was that. She thought about what their fates would be in just a few moments, and she couldn’t help but pause.

She could just leave, just keep low and walk away from the scene. Leave him to his cheese. That was a lot of cheese as well; where did he even get something like that? It was irrelevant, but weird. Maybe there was a cheese shop on the flotilla she hadn’t found yet. Dumb.

But if she just left him to his cheese, he’d keep on living and the Leviathans would keep a low kill count. She wasn’t sure when that had become so important to her, but Jewel mentioning it, and the announcement repeating it, had just hammered the point home. The Leviathans were falling behind, and that wasn’t how you got to go home. She wanted to go home.

So that was that, and there was no point in leaving. Sorry, cheese-eating guy. No hard feelings.

She held the gun in her hand: heavy, but loaded. The blade was sharp, too. She’d only get one shot, but that would be all she’d need. She could just shoot him in the face, and-

Oh Christ, was she really planning this?

No, she had to. That was that, remember? Now wasn’t the time to feel sorry for the guy. He might’ve killed people already. There were two dead bodies in there, after all. He might have tried to kill her, if the positions had been reversed and she’d been in there eating cheese. Now that she thought about it, she was sure he would do that. Wow, she really missed cheese suddenly. There you go: if you kill him, you can take his cheese, and he probably killed those two anyway. Happy?

No, of course she wasn’t.

She swallowed, feeling sweat growing in her armpits and her hands trembling, as she tried the gun all cool like as she crouched under the window, like the legendary James Bond. What would 007 do in this situation? He’d want to play it smart, but most of the time he was the one actually getting caught out. It was pretty rare that a secret agent actually got the drop on the bad guy.

Did that make her the bad guy? Were those bodies really his?

She couldn’t keep asking all these questions. She was procrastinating.

She inhaled sharply. In through the nose, down to fill out the lungs, then out through the mouth. Visualise the flow of air.

...but she couldn’t.

She had to. She probably had good reason to. But she couldn’t.

“Jewel,” she asked aloud, nervously. Something to break the silence. “What can you tell me about my target?”

Sure, she decided, as she realised what she’d said: let’s play pretend. That would help.

Munch. Munch.

Who's cheese had this been? Did someone like, find this on the flotilla somewhere? Did the guys who went around looking around for any stuff that might be useful to the participants of the show forget this cheese? Or did they like, give this to some kid, like how Nate got a fish? Man, that was funny, Gregory thought, sniggering as the memory came back to the forefront of his brain. The way Nate had like, sort of dead-pan delivered the line as he held up the fish, man, that was probably gonna be used in a ton of meme compilations.

Would they use him in any meme compilations? Would he be remembered as a character, as someone who was funny and cool and likeable? Or would he just be like, uh, Davis Todd or David Todd or whatever the fuck that guy who Jewel killed first was? Just forgotten, the only point of interest being who killed him? No. No! Of course not, he was Gregory Miller, killer of Cory and a bunch more people who just didn't know it yet! He could get this cheese back to like, Stokes and Chris and stuff, because man, who doesn't want a big wheel of cheese? If they didn't want it, then fuck them, that was just sorta stupid because like, after a few days of eating shitty Subway and bread and dried squid, this cheese was like a fucking 4-star meal. The food of the gods, here to be munched on by him.

Munch. Munch.

Who were the bodies? Jasper, that older guy who kept getting into trouble and going to the principal's office. His collar was blown. Did someone like, try and get his collar off when he died or did he die from his collar going off? And then there was, uh. Mary? Maria? No, Mary was that goth girl. One of the goth girls. Why were there so many goths in Miami? It was weird, man, you'd think all of that makeup and black hair dye and stuff would just sorta melt in the sun. Or like, start running, you know? With all the heat and all, and all the sweat from wearing pure black in one of the hottest states in America. Like, if they lived in Maine or something, they would-

In between chews, Gregory heard something faintly. Someone talking, nearby. Oh shit! He startled, scrambling to his feet as the cheese wheel thumped to the floor. It was like, sorta coming out the way that he had came in, the main entrance. Was it a player? No, he was the player here, and this would just be some dude who would be remembered for being his second kill! Then he'd get the satisfaction that he didn't get with Cory, he'd get why they did it, and from there it would be smooth sailing all the way home!

Heh.

Smooth sailing.

Because, you know, they're on a boat and all that.

Heh heh.

Alright, enough screwing around! Pulling the knife out of its sheath and gulping down the cheese already in his mouth; it was too big and it sort of hurt going down, but that didn't matter. He scrambled to hide behind the door leading out on to the deck; well, more to the side. It opened into the cabin instead of out on to the deck, and so if this person tried to come in, Gregory would be able to hide behind the door and then he could jump out, stab-stab-stab, and then that would be it!

His hands were all clammy. His heart beat like a kid banging away at the drums without reason or rhythm. It hadn't been like this before, when he was trying to kill Boh or Leah or Cory that first time. What was wrong with him? He should be excited! Second chance to get a kill, this time one he earned himself, something he didn't just steal from the stupid fuck who was too stupid to confirm their kill, a proper kill with blood and something that would make the audience remember it!

But for now, he sat in silence, clenching the knife tightly, waiting for the door to open. Waiting for something to happen.

The reply is prompt, hushed but clearly enunciated.

"That's Gregory. He's met three Leviathans and tried to kill two of them unprovoked. He probably only left the third alone because there were too many people around. One kill, but not one of us. Likes to play innocent or vulnerable, get guards down, then attack. I think he knows you're here. He's hiding behind the door with a knife. Be careful."

Amy nodded. Got it, Coach. It had been a lot more information than she’d expected. It was helpful. She was still sweating though, as her fingers sat carefully on the handle of her gun.

Three attacks, one turning into a kill. Not exactly an easy target by any means. Maybe it would’ve been more sensible to avoid him? There was no need to fight a fight she wasn’t going to win. She could find someone less armed, more vulnerable.

Could she be sure people like that were still out there, though? It was already three days in, and there were a lot of players running around. There was no guarantee the next person she met wouldn’t have even more kills, or something even bigger than a knife. Of course, a knife was dangerous, but she had one too. Better yet, hers was attached to a gun. Bringing a knife to a gunfight would never work out well. Just ask that guy from Indiana Jones.

Had Bond ever just shot someone with a knife? That was weird: she couldn’t remember. She could only think of the guy hiding behind a door, ready to stab her. Who she was getting ready to stab.

She gulped. No more questions. It was mission time.

She crept around to the doorway, treading lightly on her feet. Her toes pressed into the floor ahead of the rest of her feet, five by five, as the destination grew closer. As it grew in size before her, swelling in presence, she could’ve sworn she saw the outline of Gregory on the other side of the wall. Standing tall, twirling his knife in his hand, a sinister grin on his face. An enemy agent, getting ready to get the drop on James Bond. Guess that made her the first female James Bond. Some people would probably be pissed off.

Her hand approached the handle, only to flinch back at nothing at all.

She could still run. Still leave.

If this was a social situation, she might’ve ran. She’d done that plenty of times in the past. She didn’t like herself for it, but she’d lived. She’d live a little longer here, if she just ran.

But she didn’t want to run then, and she didn’t want to run now. She wanted to live, but it was going to be on her terms. She wasn’t going to let people like Seo or Gregory dictate how she did things anymore.

Wow, that was a lot of bravado. Maybe she even believed some of it. Or maybe she just acted without thinking, as the door creaked open before her. Slowly, looming. She moved with it, but kept her long arm stretched out. The door opened ahead of her.

A noise. Creak. Had she imagined it?

It did not matter.

She sprang forwards, to the side. There was plenty of space between her and the door, between her and Gregory. She levelled the gun, aimed where she knew his head was. She could see the outline, after all.

There was one last moment of hesitation, too small to even notice, before the gun was finally fired and Amy’s path was set in stone.

He waited. It felt like an eternity, like, you know, when you're in a dream and you're falling off some tall place and you know that when you hit the ground you'll just spring outta bed and be OK, but your brain thinks you're falling in real life and so the fall stretches on for what feels like hours, but in reality it's just a few seconds at most? Something like that. The door opened with a creak, and he could hear footsteps just to the side of him, the unknown killer entering his room. Clenching the knife so hard his hand started to hurt, he took quiet, shallow breaths. Come on, he couldn't die here. He had so much to live for!

Then a few inches above him, the door erupted in a crescendo of splintering and sound and the smell of gunpowder like some fucked up volcano, and Gregory could not suppress the yelp that came from his mouth. Maybe it was a good thing he hadn't hit that growth spurt yet. If he was taller, that thing would have killed him. Shit. Shit. He had an idea. It was bound to work, because it was just common sense, right? Did they see him go in the door, did they see him hide behind it?

Or was it some asshole mentor who wanted to get him killed 'cause they weren't on his team? Actually, yeah, Ben wasn't just gonna go around and tell his teammates that hey, there's Gregory, he's tryna get some kills, go kill him! Now, Ben wasn't his favourite winner, but he wasn't like, that dude with the grenade launcher who killed like 8 people and survived by pure luck. He was smart, he knew the kinda gimmick that he was gonna do and he took it. He was not the kinda person who got his own team members shot for fun. Anyway, this person had a gun, which meant that shit was gonna be harder. As Gregory panted, trying to think, think back to what those winners and killers and villains had done in their seasons when trapped, an idea came to his head; perhaps not his own, maybe he stole it from some other player in a season and it had only popped into his head now, anyway, it was the best choice.

He waited. They would have to come look at the body. Because, like, if you shot someone, thought they were dead and ran away, that just set up a cool revenge arc. You had to totally confirm the kill, and like, maybe he couldn't do that for Cory, but unless he was secretly Aquaman, he probably wasn't gonna be coming back any time soon. Unless he was a zombie. He waited. Waited for that sound of feet clacking against the wooden floorboards of the ship, and even then, waited a moment longer, before putting all his weight into the door, both hands on it, trying to slam it into them. Maybe it'd distract them. Maybe he'd just end up dying either way.

But he was Gregory Miller, god damn it, and he wasn't gonna die here!

Amy stared into the new porthole in the door. She’d heard the yelp, but that was it; she hadn’t seen anything in that fleeting explosion of wooden shrapnel. Was it already over?

She kept the gun levelled, even though as a firearm it was useless for the immediate moment. She knew that, but it made her feel safer. Power grows out of the barrel of a gun, after all. There was a moment longer, and nothing happened. Just a silence as the dust settled.

She had an unpleasant intuition that this was going to get worse before it got better. Maybe Gregory was about to jump out and stab her. Maybe they were dead and she was going to have to look at that and acknowledge that. The only thing she could think that might avoid it would be to turn around and just leave. Walk in, blow a hole in the door, walk back out. What a good guest.

But she swallowed, and stepped closer to the door. She could’ve taken a wide angle to go around, put more distance between herself and it, but she wanted to delay having to see what was on the other side just a little longer.

It was a mistake.

Gregory’s sneak attack caught her off guard, hitting her square in the arms in front of her body and sending her off balance. She didn’t yell, didn’t make a sound through her mouth that was clenched shut in suspense, but her heart beat even faster at the shock.

She collided into a dresser next to the door, banging her waist to accompany the growing bruise in her wrists. It was beyond good luck that she’d still been able to hold onto the gun, but that was the natural result of clinging to it for dear life. But this meant that Gregory was still alive, and she’d wasted her only shot. This was bad.

She raised the empty weapon in his direction, able to see him now that the door was closed. She knew she had to bluff, she'd ran through this sceario several times since picking up the weapon, since she didn’t think that she could take him in a fight. She didn’t know what would happen here. While her face remained as stony as ever, her trembling legs betrayed her true feelings.

“Don’t move.” she stated, voice stoic and monotone. “I will shoot you.”

The door definitely hit someone. There was a noise, the sound of it hitting his attacker, and then Gregory could see them - her - falling over and hitting a dresser. He sprang to his feet, taking a few steps towards her before he saw the gun in her hands, and then the massive knife attached to it. Was he gonna have to get into a knife fight? Sure would suck. Sammy had told him once, that when he was younger and still working for the fire department, he rode along with the ambulance guys and came to a knife fight scene, two guys arguing over some girl in a Taco Bell parking lot and then they started knifing each other.

The loser died there in the parking lot. The winner died in the hospital. He didn't wanna get into a knife fight, especially since his was a lot smaller compared to this girl's big-ass blade. But it wasn't size that mattered, it was what you did with it. A big knife stuck on a gun like that, oughta be heavy. If she was like, a Total War character, she'd be like, really hard hitting but easy to evade. You just gotta dodge and give her a death by a thousand cuts. His heart was beating in his chest. It was the first gun he'd seen in a while, apart from that gun that Kaya had, and he wanted it. Would be a lot better than Cory's knife, and he could shoot someone and stab them at the same time! That'd be sure to get on the best kill compilations.

Despite all the adrenaline running through him and the nagging fear that you know, this might be it, he slowly circled around to her right, putting himself between her and the rest of the cabin. She could either try and dart around him, or as he hoped, she'd go for a tactical retreat and try to get out onto the deck. She was still pointing the gun at him, but like, there were a couple of Total War games with guns, and the old ones only had one shot and then you had to reload for like, a minute. So they had big firing lines, so one line fires, one line reloads, then the other line fires and the one that just fired reloads - anyway that's probably why they had the bayonet. And besides, she was shaking like a tree in a hurricane.

"There's only one shot in that." Gregory pointed out, pointing at the gun with his knife, taking a step towards her. Close enough that she might feel the need to back off, far enough that if she made a lunge for him, he'd have time to side step. "Unless you stuffed two in there, which would be stupid and probably make it blow up. How 'bout you drop it and get the fuck outta here?" She probably wasn't gonna do that, but hey, he could say he tried. Then when she went for him, hey presto, knife to the neck or the stomach or something and kill no. 2! It was ingenious.

Gregory didn’t flinch. He saw right through her ruse. She had never been a good liar.

He gave her the option to leave. Drop the gun and get the fuck out of there. Of course she was never going to do that, not the first thing at least: the gun was the only thing keeping her alive right now.

But leave?

She evaluated her situation, eyes focused on Gregory the whole time. No ammo, just a knife that she had no real idea how to use. No major wounds, not bleeding to death. Her target was shorter than her, but she didn’t know what he was capable of. All she did know was that he’d already murdered at least one person.

He had manoeuvred himself away from the door, but felt like he was blocking anywhere else in the room. If she moved anywhere, she felt that he would get the first chance to stab her. She was clearly on the back-foot, and the only thing she had to show for it was a big hole in the door and a lot of wooden dust in the air.

You know what? Leaving was a good idea.

She kept the gun steadied at him, but didn’t say another word as she sidestepped towards the doorway, feeling along the wall with her other hand. The second she felt the give of the open passage, she took it, and ran away as fast as she could.

“Sorry, Jewel.” she said aloud, in the middle of a check to be sure she wasn’t being tailed. “It was too risky. I didn’t think I’d win.”

The response is relaxed and oddly warm.

"You don't have to apologize for playing smart.

"You weren't hurt, you navigated a dangerous situation, and you came out of the encounter better than any of your teammates did. You learned something. That's a success.

"I bet it'll work out next time."

Huh! Well, he didn't get a kill, but he didn't get shot or stabbed, and so that was sorta a win in his book. The girl just sorta edged towards the doorway, and as soon as she got to it, ran away like Speedy Gonzales outta there. And sure, he already had Cory today, so like, it wasn't totally the end of the world, you know? He had still made sure that he was a player! That he was someone that eventually all the people were gonna be talking about, his cool kills and epic moments and all that. Like, man, it was honestly fucking thrilling to hear that he, his name, was on the announcements, and not because he had died. Hearing Ritzy say Gregory Miller, it sent shivers down his spine.

Admittedly, she wasn't the most positive about the scenario that his kill had arisen from, but it was always like that! Sometimes you forgot to confirm your kill and then bam, someone steals it from you. He had to remember that when the time came for his next one. Gotta make 100% sure, otherwise they might come atcha like a ghost or a zombie and stab you while your back's turned. It was sorta like, what had apparently happened to Vasily, because Ritzy mentioned he hadn't finished what he started and then there came Ivan, there to take him out! Man, seeing what all his friends and enemies and stuff had got up to would be pretty fun once he got outta here.

But first, he had to attend to his cheese. The wheel was lying on its side on the floor next to the bunk that Gregory had been sitting on before the stupid bitch interrupted him. Maybe the cheese eating was a little excessive, because he sort of felt a little sick, but if he had to eat dry bread one more time he was gonna go nuts. And he couldn't be the only one who was sorta tired of their shitty food. He missed honey. And good Subway that didn't have any fish. And ham. And like, food that wasn't what they had. Ooh, they had to have a bunch of kitchens on the cruise ship. Maybe he could find some better stuff there. Ham and bread and butter. Sandwiches! Good food!

But for now, he was trying to pick up the heavy cheese. Man, it was a big wheel of cheese, but you wouldn't think it was heavy! Stupid girl, making him drop it. With grunting and effort and the use of his knife as a bar to lift it up, he finally managed to lift it back up on the hammock and sat besides it. One more piece of cheese for the road, munched eagerly, and then he cut like, a quarter of the cheese off the wheel, which was still heavy but like, a sort of manageable heavy, wrapped it up in a bit of towel from his bag, and then put it in his bag. It probably wasn't a good diet, but if he could add a bit of cheese to every meal, then it would be good for his morale! Soldiers marched on their stomach and all that, and if your food was shit or you didn't have any then your knights wouldn't be happy and they would maybe kill you because of no good food. It had happened once in Total War! And like, maybe it had happened in real life too!

He elected to hide the remainder of the cheese underneath the hammock that had the girl with the blown out throat. Sure, it would be found easy, but you probably wouldn't wanna go in here because it sorta smelt a little and that'd probably get worse in the heat. Man, with the way you sorta shit yourself when you died, all the dead bodies probably smell bad. It wasn't good to think about, and so Gregory bid it out of his mind and hiked his bag up.

He left out of the other door. The girl might have been waiting for him if he left out of the one she blew a hole in.
