Body Count

Open

Rising above the treetops of the jungle, the helipad offers a commanding view of the surroundings, its usefulness just about outweighing out of place it seems. It apparently hasn't been touched in years, with various vines and plants growing around the rusting metal struts and supports. In order to make it to the top, one must take a series of twisting staircases.

Body Count

((Janet Claymont continued from Look Out!))

It was late afternoon on the island and the sun was beginning to fall out of the sky, its glow dampened by a group of clouds that were crawling past it. The stench of death and jungles was hanging in the air, fresh bodies already starting to rot on the ground below. Nick Simmon’s impaled corpse in particular had made for a gruesome display.

Janet was huddled up to her knees right in the middle of the helipad, covered in dirt and debris from her trek, limbs all but frozen to the spot along with her thoughts.

The bodies were starting to pile up

The night had been spent lost in the jungle, wandering into it aimlessly after leaving Anthony and his mess; that was his problem to sort out and she didn’t want anything to do with it. There hadn’t been any sign of Nicole whilst she was walking through the undergrowth, but then she hadn’t even been looking in the first place. If she’d put her mind to it, she probably could’ve found her way out much sooner than she had, but she was far too preoccupied trying to make sense of things, and by the time she’d fallen asleep on a log she’d ran out of things to think about.

The announcements the next morning had given her a fresh batch.

Five dead guys. Five. Yeah, she’d known about Sidney in advance, but that didn’t mean shit because four others had gone around and done the same thing as Anthony and murdered the shit out of someone. She didn’t even know the guys who had died, not well anyway, but she couldn’t see how they’d deserve this. She wouldn’t want to see how they’d deserve this.

As for the danger zones? Well, Janet had ran out of her ‘giving a fuck‘ reserves by then.

And after being introduced to three more brand new corpses when she’d finally found a building in the middle of the jungle, all Janet could do was bury her face in her hand and walk on by.

Why was this happening? Terrorists did what they did because they were just fucking loony, at least that’s what Janet had figured, but the rest of her bus were just guys at her school. By now there were eight bodies she knew about and if she put a killer to each one that meant that eight guys had given in to it all. Eight murderers running around the island, that was the sort of thing she’d see in those shitty slasher films Chadd kept taking her to.

Lucky bastard.

So what was she supposed to do? The thought of dying hadn’t even crossed her mind, but she didn’t have a clue if she could get away from the place: the map said it was an island and she was a pretty crappy swimmer. Was she supposed to just sit there and wait for some helicopter to land and fly her way?

“I’m pretty sick of this shit.” she groaned, before slumping her head back into her knees.

((Karl Chalmers continued from No One Checks in Unless Their Name is Smith.))

Karl had made his way through the jungle, the sun in his eyes and his back to the hotel. He had to leave before someone else caught up with him. Those announcements... he'd be on them next time. He couldn't decide whether or not being the only one was worse than hearing other names. No one would trust him anymore. They might react harshly.

Like he himself did.

It was a while before he found himself in another part of the island. By that timing he was sweating from the long trek in the jungle, combined with the heat and the humidity. The building was less of a building and more of a steel structure. It seemed to be a helipad or something.

It would offer a great vantage if he could make it up there.

He reached the bottom of the staircase and began to climb, each step making a loud clank. As he reached the top, he noticed that there was someone else there.

His shirt still had blood on it.

Well. This will be interesting.

There was a noise, a familiar one, coming from behind her. It was the clanking of someone approaching up steps, getting closer to her, distant at first but of course it grew nearer. The miserable silence of the jungle did little to cover it up.

This time wasn’t like yesterday though: she may not have trusted them, but Anthony and Nicole had been there, as much a welcome face for Sidney (Anthony especially) as she was. Now she was alone, Anthony and Nicole god knew where, but she wouldn't be much longer.

Then the noise had stopped.

She was up on her legs in a second, spun around to see who had walked up on her and her hand on her wrench without a second thought, her grip tight on its bloodless frame. Her eyes steeled, watching the new arrival, identifying him as Karl Chalmers. He had the reputation of a kiss ass, the sort that would run and tell on her when she stood up for her little brother, but Janet never cared. They were a pain in the ass, sometimes they needed to be shut up, but she did what she did for Joe and for people’s own good, not for fun. She could deal with a little snitch now and then.

But this time was different. They weren’t in the jungles of a school corridor, they were in an actual jungle, stood on a helipad as their classmates around them died thanks to the rest of their classmates. There was no-one to squeal to, not unless the army turned up and needed help finding the guys who’d killed other guys. Right now it was just her and him, and that beget just one question:

Friend or foe?

“Karl, right?” she said, her voice low and wary. She hadn’t overlooked the stain on his shirt, standing out in the afternoon sun despite blending into the rest of the dull grey tone. She’d seen the type of stain a lot lately, pooled around a knife wound or soaked into the corpse of one of her classmates. It was unmistakable.

So that put some light on her question.

“What happened?” she asked, much more matter of fact than curious. Her hand still remained on her wrench, tucked into her jeans pocket but ready to come out at a moment’s notice, regardless of the distance between them. Right now, more than anything, she had to be careful.

The blood stain was proof enough.

(David continued from If Only I Could Go For A Swim)

David was lost.

Really lost.

Super lost.

Fuck jungles, really. He'd been walking since leaving the girls on the shore, a state of affairs his feet were starting to have something to say about. Had he really had to just walk out on them like that, especially with the shore becoming a danger zone? Who knew if they'd even got out in time?

That'd be on your hands, Davey-boy. Is Nikki really worth so much more than them, that you could just walk out on them?

...That was really hard to answer. On the one hand, yeah, finding Nikki was more important than screwing around with those two; hell, he barely knew Keira and Charlie was his ex for a reason. On the other... they were still people. Keira wasn't so bad, he still had a lot of good memories with Charlie and nobody deserved to be in a fucking messed-up situation like this. If he started saying one person deserved to live more than all the rest, was he really any better than Danya?

Probably not. He'd lost patience and stalked off, then gone to sleep in this God-forsaken jungle. Irresponsible of him, but it wasn't like the shore was hard to get off of, right? Who knew where Nikki was. Who knew what he would do if he was too late.

It was all too easy to imagine her laying mangled in some ditch in the jungle somewhere, while here he was walking around uselessly and probably going in fucking circles. He'd had to ditch the windbreaker because he was sweating buckets with no end in sight. He liked that windbreaker. It'd be easier if he had some damn company or if the map were any use at all. He'd never been good at reading maps.

Glad Mike can't see me like this. He's got that big fight to get ready for... gonna have to miss that one. Damnit.

He tried to pull the details of the fight to mind. God knew Mike had been going on about it enough times. It was something important, that was for sure, and it kept his mind off the fact, oh, I don't know, he and/or everyone he knew was going to die.

Cheerful. As if summoned, finally there was a bit of a break in the trees. A metal staircase.

...Huh. He looked up. The hell was a helipad doing in the middle of the jungle? What the fuck kind of place had this been before Danya's goons had turned it into their personal sacrifice to Khorne slaughterfest arena?

Well, whatever. His feet were getting tired, and it beat walking around in the jungle for a few more hours. He started his ascent slowly, listening for any voices or signs of activity.

"What happened?"

Janet Claymont. That was the girl standing before him. She held a wrench, which he presumed was her weapon. She was asking him what happened, as if the stain on his shirt wasn't enough to tell. He knew he'd have to explain, especially since the announcements would reveal him to be a killer anyways.

"I killed Marty. Marty Lovett," he said. Karl felt disgusted at how easily the words left his mouth. "He came into the hotel, where me and a few others were making base. He had his gun, and... I reacted to that. I didn't know whether he was going to kill anyone else. So I..."

He trailed off at those words. He didn't feel like he needed to say anymore. He pointed to the gun in his hand.

"So. Am I a monster? Are you going to kill me now?" he asked, his tone slightly mocking. He had no idea what Janet had been doing before he found her here.

"If you haven't killed anyone yet, you're fine."

Karl answered.

She didn’t know Marty that well: he wasn’t in any of her classes as far as she remembered, nor was he on any sports teams, and he wasn’t someone that ever got in her face. Another person dead that she didn’t know anything about; killed by a classmate she’d known just as well.

And he’d confessed without even blinking.

She shook her head, lips parted as she failed to hide her disgust, hand around the wrench that had slipped out of her jeans tightening ever further. To think that she had gone to school with someone who could confess to murder without a second thought, who asked her, almost sounding like he didn't care if she did, if she'd sink to his level, and if not then he'd let her live. She was being spared by a murdering bastard.

There was that question again.

“How the fuck could you?” she snarled, head still shaking as she failed to understand it, any of it. “None of us deserve to die. No-one does!” Her arm was starting to twitch, eager to do something, anything, to the thing in front of her. It didn’t matter what he might do back, not in the slightest; right now he embodied everything that she was beginning to hate: just how quickly it had gone to shit.

“Get the fuck away from me Karl, this place is mine!” she snapped, oblivious to his pointless defence, pointing her wrench straight at him. She wanted to put him in his place, shut him down like all those bastards back at school who pretended to be so damn big, but she still wasn’t even close to figuring out how to even do that. Instead her brain just ran on instinct, telling her to hide from the problem, huddled on top of her ivory tower and away from the corpses that littered the island beneath, and get rid of the bastard who was fucking up her day.

Whether Marty had been in the announcements, she couldn’t remember. That’d be nine if he hadn’t, probably more by now if things kept going the way they were. Christ, she didn’t even know how full that bus was when she got on it, but if everyone had a different killer, then more than half of the people left must’ve ended up doing what Karl had. Maybe; she wasn’t sure if that even made sense.

It was starting to get really fucking hard to think straight.

David pretty much got one look at the confrontation here, went "fuck that" and kept walking.

"How the fuck could you? None of us deserve to die. No-one does!" she yelled back at him.

As if that argument would actually work in situation.

"Get the fuck away from me Karl, this place is mine!"

She was looking at him. Accusing him. Acting like he was the worst person on the island.

"How could I? How could anyone? Why are we stuck on this island, huh? If no one deserves to die, why are there already four other dead people? Marty was there, and he was a killer! Should I let him go free so he could do I don't know what? I was trying to prevent something bad from happening!"

This girl, who did she think she was? Did she think she was better than everyone else, because she hadn't killed? Was that it?

He just kept spouting bullshit at her, expecting her to eat it up like a first class buffet. She had a low tolerance for that sort of thing back at school; on the island she couldn’t even stand to listen to this sort of crap, she was miserable enough already.

“I don’t give two shits what you were trying to do!” she yelled back at him, relenting her crushing grip on her wrench to give him an accusing finger. “You’re a fucking murderer Karl, and you’re going to fuck off right now!” Whether he had done it in self-defence, or trying to save anyone else, Janet didn’t have the energy to think about it, nor did she even want to. He wasn’t going to get to justify himself.

No, she wasn’t going to sit around and let him scream his head off at her like he was a saint: he’d killed classmates and now he was there trying to justify it. Whatever kind of fucked up monster he was now, he was not someone she had gone to school with, and she wasn’t going to waste a goddamn breath trying to argue with his bullshit.

She just wanted him gone and to be left the fuck alone.

She wasn't going to let up. Karl didn't want to have to keep going with this pointless argument. If she was going keep herself deluded with this situation.

"Fine," he said, barely above a whisper.

Let her keep being like that. She'll run around being all passive, and then when some other killer eventually takes her life, she'll know what was really happening.

He took the steps down, somewhere between a brisk walk and a full run.

((Also technically filler but the last promise~))

Janet finally found herself alone on the top of the watch tower, just like she had wanted since Karl had shown up. She finally knelt into her legs and, eventually, ended up falling asleep in the middle of the pad.

The next morning after another crappy rest the announcements came and, horribly predictably, more people had died. She was starting to lose any sense of shock at the whole thing.

For a while she remained fixed to the spot, but her dependent relationship on the tower was never meant to last. Soon she grew bored and restless, having realised just how exposed she was up on the tower and how much she might bump into someone with Karl's attitude and Sidney's initiative. Finally, in a tireless fit of frustration and anger, she left her haven in search of something to distract herself.
