Almost The Last Of Her Kind

Feeding the lake is a stream running down from somewhere high in the mountains surrounding the valley. It winds back and forth up the steep slopes, and without proper equipment, most people would have a very difficult time following it for long. In some places, it narrows down to barely more than a trickle, in others, it widens to the point it could almost be considered a river (albeit a shallow one). It proceeds in a vaguely north-easterly direction, but follow the stream far enough, and you will encounter a particularly abrupt upswing in the trail's steepness, and a simple, stark sign warning not to proceed any further, or be fired upon.

One of the girls had taken off, after the prone one had, with some struggle, gotten to her feet. She didn't seem like she was in any shape to be a threat.

Frank dropped the rifle and let it dangle from his shoulder, with any imminent danger seemingly non-existent.

"I don't know, Audrey, what do you think?" He asked, smiling a little. "Should we go over there and introduce ourselves, or are we just moving along?"

Audrey felt herself relax a little. From how Frank looked, the danger was over. Not that it had been them that had been in danger, she supposed, but peace was nice all the same.

She had a feeling there wouldn't be much time for peace soon.

"Let's..." She paused, thinking. "Let's head over, then. I'd like to know what's been going on with everyone else."

Standing up, she brushed herself off, and began making her way towards where she had seen Frank point the rifle.

When they were alone again, she would have to tell him she was leaving. Anything to delay the inevitable was welcome.

Dylan got it, which was just as well. It meant Becky didn’t have to kick her ass to get her point across, which, admittedly, still would’ve been a headache on only one non-ruined forever leg. But hey, the important thing was that she could still scare people off, and that got the job done just as well.

“Chea, you better run, Dylan.” She scoffed, though not switching off her glare. She was satisfied, but it wasn’t the same as all those other satisfactions from winning hands down. This time her victory was tainted by relief.

But screw it, she still won. That was good enough for her.

She glanced around for a moment, unaware of the two trailing her from behind. Searching around for that gun had seemed like a great idea at the time, but it was still rather late at night and thus rather dark. In the end, poking through some bushes on one leg in the pitch black didn’t sound like the best use of her time, and the thought lingered in the back of her head that Dylan might just come back. Unlikely, given how well she’d scared her off, but that’s why it was in the back of her head rather at the front.

So, without any reason to linger, she set off once again.

The people were gone when they got there.

There was a ditch, with nothing particularly interesting nearby. She looked at it for a while, but couldn't figure out what had happened or what the gunshot had been all about.

Audrey was a little disappointed. At the same time, though, she was relieved that she wouldn't have to do any negotiating. She wasn't particularly keen on being held hostage again.

She looked at Frank, lifted one shoulder, and relaxed it again.

"I guess we should get going. Maybe we'll find them again along the way."
