Changing

Private; engine room

The cargo hold and engine rooms of the cruise ship, as well as crew quarters and other areas not intended to be seen by the guests, comprise the bowels. These are the lowest points of the ship, and unlike the well-decorated upper levels, the aesthetic is sparse and functional. The bare metal walls are stained with rust, and low-hanging pipes are common. Given the ship's size, this area falls well below the waterline, leaving ambient noise strange and unsettling, and creating a stifling atmosphere. The cargo hold is full of wooden crates, creating an artificial maze, though most of the crates are empty and those that are not are mostly filled with screws and bolts rendered inoperable by manufacturing defects; these were brought in by the producers to populate the area.

((Amy Barrows-Shaw continued from Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing?))

The surroundings full of twisting piping, arcane machinery and rusty swatches might have seemed claustrophobic or off-putting to some. Anything could be around any corner, or anyone. Or Jaws, looming over with his big metal teeth, ready to take a bite out of you. He was really cool, but still scared her when she was younger. At least until Moonraker, which made him a joke character and a good guy. Richard Kiel was apparently really nice in real life, too.

For Amy, all the cover and ambience gave her a sense of relief instead of dread. The gentle creaking of the water outside against the hull, and the moaning of the metalwork inside, was eerily soothing. An Engine Room ASMR that she had to herself. Finally.

Roberto was turned away from her as she undressed, because he was too polite to stare and she wasn't about to let him watch. Having a mannequin watch her undress would be creepy. Her mannequin at home was only a bust, so it didn’t count.

She thought back to just a few weeks ago, when she was working on a blouse at her sewing machine. She had a cup of coffee at her side, and a song she couldn’t place was playing on the radio. She was frustrated trying to get the collar to look right, but it was a good kind of frustration because she knew she could if she kept working at it. She was looking forward to wearing it, but she didn’t think she had ever gotten around to it in the end. It depressed her to think about it, as she took off her trousers and revealed her silk leggings.

She pulled out the trousers from the Melina outfit: brown and slim, but moveable. They managed to fit very well, despite her not having tailored them like she usually did with new clothes. She wondered if the SOTF-TV crew had her measurements. That made her shiver.

After affixing the shoes, she was already starting to feel more prepared. These clothes said to her, “You can fight in us.”. The fact that they were Bond Girl stylish was a plus, even if she didn't have quite the same look as Carole Bouqet. She wasn't that far off though, was she?

Unbuttoning her blouse to reveal her cotton under-shirt, she looked back at Melina’s top half and decided to go down to her bra. Melina’s shirt was also cotton, and with a heavy leather jacket on top, three layers would’ve been uncomfortable.

She fumbled with blouse as she pulled it off, an easy mistake, and it fell to the ground. She picked it up, and stood back up.

Wham. A loud clang echoed through the room. A pain rang through her skull.

She probably shouldn’t have been standing so close to the pipes, she winced.

This place felt like a Freddy Kruger wet dream.

[[RJ Blackburn continued from Just what is it that makes today's homes so different, so appealing?]]

The pipes, the lighting, the general aesthetic. It sent shivers down RJ's spine. He was seriously expecting someone in ugly sweater and a fedora to jump out and stab him in the throat with finger knives. He hated it. Wanted to leave as soon as he opened the door to the place.

But he needed to find Amy. If thought like that held any merit, then what other option did he have? Leave her here for some sicko to slit her open, groin to gullet, Candyman style? What kind of person would he be if he did that? Not someone that could look himself in the mirror anymore, that much is for sure.

So into the creepy area he went, trying to ignore the sweat crawling down his neck. He hoped the fear would die down once he and Amy were out of here, otherwise he was on his way to becoming a complete nervous wreck, and people like that were even more likely to get killed.

As cliche as it may have sounded, the sudden bang nearly made RJ jump out of his skin when he hear it. Almost like a sign-yes, there is a force to be reckoned with here, now leave before it eats your face or something worse. But if that was true, then it meant he was right to follow-it could be attacking Amy! If he didn't do something quick, he could be dealing with some guilt that would stay for the rest of his life.

...however long that may be, considering the circumstances.

Rushing to where the sound came from-or rushing as much as the cramped, maze like space allowed, as well as his own now wheezing body, why couldn't he have tried harder in PE, this might actually get him killed now-he found the area the noise came from.

"A-Amy! Are you..."

The sentence, as well as his train of thought, came to a stop once he realized what was in front of him.

Or, well, who as well as what.

Amy, half naked, with only a bra on above her waist.

RJ felt his entire face heat up as his the blood rushed there, apparently determined to show just how embarrassed he was. He tried to think of a response, but all that came out of his mouth was.

"I-buh-id-thaw-yuh-uhm."

What the fuck was wrong with him?

Amy whipped round. RJ. She froze, like a naked deer in the pervy headlights.

She brought her blouse up to cover herself, staring daggers at RJ as her mouth curled in on itself. The room felt so much colder all of a sudden, as icy fingers crept up her exposed spine. “Go away.” she said, incapable of moving a muscle.

Why had RJ followed her? And where was Luciano? And had he been watching her this whole time? And -

“No, really, fuck off.”

The words were enough to make RJ snap back to attention. He knew he already asked the question, but seriously, what the fuck was wrong with him? Why would he just stand there, staring as his face decided to imitate a ripe tomato? If Tandy had seen this-or anyone in his family, really-they had probably felt ashamed.

He twirled around, cleared his throat even though it was completely unnecessary.

“R-right, sorry.”

Despite his legs starting to feel sore by this point, he walked away as quickly as possible, getting out of sight Amy, and vice versa.

As if the day didn’t suck enough, the world probably thought he was a pervert now.

Why couldn’t he just catch a break?

Amy watched RJ’s every move very carefully as he left, waiting a few moments longer to make sure he didn’t try to peek around and get a sight of her changing again. She had some difficulty fumbling with the rest of her outfit while keeping an eye out, but it was better than leaving herself exposed.

As she pulled over the leather jacket and retied her black bandanna around her arm, her previous questions returned. Why had RJ followed her? And where was Luciano? It didn’t seem like RJ would have shot Luciano, but she couldn’t be sure. But if he had done that, he probably would’ve tried to shoot her when she was alone, just like when they’d first met. Only now she was in a cramped engine room, with no-one around to see it.

Those icy fingers crept up from her spine and onto her neck. Were they the fingers of death? This was the perfect situation to kill someone and get away with it. Especially since RJ was better armed. Just point the gun and pull the trigger. End of Amy.

“Damn it.” she whispered, nervously bouncing on her heels. It was too much to try to process; she just wanted to have a moment to herself to think. She looked down at herself, trying to distract herself and return to her centre, but even the outfit wasn’t giving her solace now. She had thought she could fight in it, but was that just bluster?

Why had RJ followed her?

She picked up Roberto and the rest of her things, moving stiffly as her body resisted the idea of going anywhere. In her younger years she probably would’ve stayed in that corner, regardless of what happened, but she couldn’t do that. She might die if she did. She might die if she didn’t, but at least she’d have a chance at getting away.

So she walked out, facing RJ head on. Well, almost. She couldn’t bring herself to make eye contact, remembering how he had looked as he had got a good look at her just moments ago. She felt sick thinking about it.

She’d never dated a boy, not sincerely, and she didn’t have a huge desire to do so, so she’d never let someone see her like that. The fact that the first guy to do so did so against her will, in the situation they were in, was nauseating. Even if it was just a few seconds and it was an accident (if it was an accident), she hated RJ for it.

“Why did you follow me? Where’s Luciano?” she asked. There wasn’t much volume to her words. As much as she wanted him gone, he was still armed and she was not. The icy fingers curled around her shoulders as he held his weapon.

"Can I be any more of a dumbass?"

RJ rubbed at one of his temples as he spoke, nursing a headache that was starting to grow. Yet again he wished that the situation was really just a nightmare, and that he would just wake up and it would all be over. That he wasn't on SOTF, and he hadn't just walked in on a girl trying to change clothes. It would've made things so much easier if that was the case.

But it wasn't. There he was, in the bowels of a cruise ship, minutes after he'd just walked in on poor Amy, who was almost completely exposed from the waist up.

The first time RJ had ever seen a girl in a position like that, and not only was it at a time that he really didn’t want to, it was also completely against her will.

He’d say he wanted to die, but he wasn’t sure if it was safe to joke about that kind of thing anymore.

He stayed silent until Amy arrived, at which point he promptly put his left hand back on his gun-holding it with one scrawny hand wasn’t easy okay-and looked only to the side of Amy’s head. Forget eye contact, he wasn’t sure if he could just plain look at her anymore.

The guilty frown only increased in its intensity as his eyes completely went to the left, avoiding Amy entirely.

“I thought...I thought it was a bad idea, to go anywhere alone. Splitting up usually doesn’t go well, so I...”

He shrugged limply, the blush starting to come back again.

“I followed.

“He should still be on the deck. I didn’t...really wait for a response, before leaving.”

His gaze finally shifted to the ground as he wished internally to shrink in upon himself.

“I’m so sorry.”

Amy said nothing in response to RJ’s apology. She didn’t know if it was sincere, and she wasn’t sure she cared. She just wanted to think things through, but RJ had tailed after her like a lost puppy, walking in on her half-naked. She was more of a cat person.

What could she do now? If she told RJ to just leave her alone, would he? He seemed so determined to watch out for her, even though they weren’t on the same team. They didn’t even know each other, not in the slightest. It didn’t make sense for him to be looking out for her. It didn’t make sense that he hadn’t just shot her already either. There was no-one around to see it, and he had every motive. That was the point of SOTF-TV after all: kill people, win, go home and be a celebrity. The only reason she was still alive, if he wasn’t just dragging it out, was that he really was just a nice, naive guy.

She didn’t care. She didn’t want to team up with RJ, she had realised after she’d left, because she didn’t trust him. She couldn’t trust him. He could not shoot her all he wanted, but at the end of the day all it would take was one second of changing his mind and she’d be dead. Maybe if Luciano had been the one with the gun, she might have stuck around, but maybe not. She didn’t miss him either, because he was a stranger too. The same team didn’t alleviate that.

She realised just how alone she was.

She looked at RJ again, or rather, looked at him out of the corner of her eye. She didn’t think she could get him to go away. Not without yelling at him, and risking changing his mind. She didn’t have the confidence in her charisma to try to talk him out of it.

She squeezed Roberto. At least he had her back.

“Should we go?” she asked. She still avoided looking at him.

Not even a response. No It’s alraight even though it clearly isn’t. No Whatever, just never speak of this again. Not even an Apology not accepted, get out.

Really, he knew the last one would’ve been the worst thing Amy could say to him, or at least one of the worst. Telling RJ he messed up so bad, she never wants to see him again.

But somehow, the silence felt worse. Like he did something so awful that he didn’t even deserve any sort of verbal acknowledgment. He knew what he did was awful, and he accepted it, but that didn’t change the fact that, as cliche as it sounded at this point, he wanted to curl up in a little hole and die.

In response to the question, RJ nodded -just a bit too quickly-before speaking, now looking to his left side instead of at the floor.

“Yeah, we-we should...yeah.”

And with that, he turned and started walking toward the door. He would’ve been speed walking, but after the physical exhaustion of jogging after Amy, he just walked at his normal speed.

God, could this day get any worse?

RJ started to leave, expecting her to follow. Didn’t even try to give her the option of saying no, or ask why she’d changed her mind. He had just expected it. Assumed it.

It was like there was a rope tying the two together. Or more accurately, a chain. She could feel it wrapped around her waist. Amy was locked into following along with this guy until she died, just by chance. She wouldn’t be able to relax or focus her thoughts, because she needed space to do that right now. Common sense would’ve said that she just needed to speak her mind, to tell him she didn’t want to team up, to tell him to just leave her alone. But common sense wasn’t that common. Not when you were exhausted, and still trying to process the rapidly increasing chances of your own death.

No, not exhausted. Exasperated. She was sick of him following her around. She just wanted time to herself to change and gather her thoughts. She didn’t want this guy to walk in on her changing, or refuse to leave her alone, or keep making her think she was going to die because of his gun. It wasn’t fair. Why couldn’t he take the hint? Why was he trying to force her to spell it out when she couldn’t?

Her head throbbed. Slamming her skull into a pipe had hurt, and the stress was making it hurt more. She couldn’t think straight, between the pounding in her brain and the constant presence of RJ. She had to do something.

She remembered a thought she’d had before, back when RJ had shown her gun. She wanted that gun. She didn’t care about RJ. That was still the case. Maybe she could do something about it this time?

She closed in behind RJ. She tiptoed, even though there was no real reason to. Instinct, perhaps.

She looked at Roberto. He got this.

Amy swung him around, and the mannequin flew at RJ in a mighty headbutt.

Things could always get worse.

Just leave the bowels, go back to Luciano, and then figure out what to do from there, maybe leaving the two and going on his own.

It was a simple plan, still putting things off, but what else was he supposed to do? Just abandon Amy here and now? Offer something to make up for him walking in on her like that? Stay with them for the rest of the day, maybe even longer?

Amy was only armed with a mannequin, and if she ran into anyone better armed she was definitely in trouble, so no. RJ needed his supplies just as much as Amy needed hers, and while he might be able to offer some unnecessary things, he wasn't sure what counted as 'unnecessary' yet. And after what just happened, he wasn't sure if he could ever really look at Amy the same way ever again, and it probably went both ways.

The idea of allying with someone when you can't even look at them seemed like a serious pain, and he wasn't about to tell Luciano what happened, so that meant coming up with a story about wha-

The train of thought derailed from its tracks and went right into a lake as two heads connected. He had about a millisecond to realize it was probably the mannequin before the world was engulfed in white. RJ couldn't remember if that was just a normal thing that happened when you were hit in the head and didn't expect it, or if it was a symptom of shock exclusive to him.

Frankly, he didn't care.

He shouted as he fell, trying to turn as he did to see if what happened really just happened. His grip on the gun tightened reflexively, trying to form fists on instinct to defend, but instead finding solace in ensuring the weapon didn't leave his hands.

Only one thought passed his mind as he hit the ground.

Why?

He

He wasn’t knocked out.

Amy stared down at him, Roberto hanging in her arm. His cool smile plastered on his plastic face like always, unphased by the violence he had just been a part of. Amy’s own face was still, but behind it her brain clicked and whirred as it tried to re-engage.

There was no time for waiting though, so instincts took over. It chose fight, because she had already started it. It didn’t matter that RJ had a gun. It mattered that RJ had a gun, and she had wanted it since she first saw it. That’s all her muscles could remember as she rushed forwards, throwing Roberto aside with a light series of clunks as he bounced against the metal floor.

She threw her focus towards the weapon, rather than the person behind it. She loomed over her prone classmate without a word, reaching forwards to try and wrestle the gun out of his hands. She just had to get it out of RJ’s grip. She had to have it for herself, because then she’d be safe, and she wouldn’t need him. She could deal with the next part when she got there.

It was the third time RJ had thought this today, but he was sure that this time he felt was the most sincere when he wished he would wake up from this nightmare already.

The throbbing pain in his skull meant that he was still awake, though, as well as the cold metal that bit into his hands as something-no, no, someone-tried to pry the riffle from his fingers. And as his vision cleared, RJ recognized exactly who it was.

Was this really how it was supposed to end? In a nightmare setting like the bowels of this ship, ambushed and killed by someone he thought he could trust, shot with his own gun? Was this how his story was supposed to end? A victim that, for all he knew, had been set up from the very beginning?

No. No! No no no! That was not happening, he would not accept such a thing! What kind of crappy ending was that to a book or a movie? Going through all of his life just to die here, stabbed in the back by someone he had just wanted to help? It was bullshit, and he wasn't about to let his life end this way.

His grip tightened on the gun as much as it could, RJ pulled it towards himself as his expression turned to a snarl.

"WHAT THE FUCK AMY!"

He didn't care if drew someone dangerous in. Fuck it, he half hoped for it.

He had started feeling more will to do something violent at this point, if it ended the fight sooner.

Amy didn’t flinch as RJ screamed at her, still trying to pull the gun from his hands. It didn’t matter that he was upset, or that he felt betrayed. His feelings were meaningless to her at that point. But as much as she tugged and yanked on the weapon, it did not budge.

Frustration boiled up inside of her as she held tight, but couldn't manage more. Her plan wasn’t working, but she couldn’t stop now. She had wanted to avoid risking RJ changing his mind, and now he almost certainly had. If she didn’t get the gun, she would die. If she did get the gun, she wouldn’t die. Simple as that.

She had to get it. That was all there was to it. She wasn’t going to die. She refused to die like this. And so she channelled that live-or-die determination into one, powerful, surging-adrenaline pull.

RJ almost wanted to scream more at Amy, like it would actually do something to help the situation. It didn’t even faze her, but it would at least provide some form of catharsis in the moment.

He had just wanted to help, and this is what he got for it. Maybe he had made a mistake, but did he really deserve to die just for accidentally walking in on a girl changing? It was like killing someone because they stole your bag of chips!

Okay, maybe not the best example, but it still didn’t change the fact that it was a petty as Hell reason to kill someone.

Amy wouldn’t make things easy. RJ needed a better grip on the gun-it wouldn’t matter how strong his grip was if the positioning of his hands were crap. He needed to put a hand somewhere he could really grip it.

Trigger area, whatever it was called. Dangerous, but it was either take a risk or become a corpse, and risk-taking sounded much more appealing in the moment.

Right hand was good holding tight to what RJ thought was the muzzle, so the left hand darted to get a grip near the trigger-

RJ succeeded.

Right in time for Amy to make her strongest pull on the gun yet.

The gun bucked wildly in their hands, and RJ felt pain in his index and middle fingers as they’re jerked away. For a moment, he was not sure if he actually shot a bullet or if Amy just pulled away the gun in a different way.

The sound of metal ricocheting off of metal is what made him realize a bullet had been fired.

Amy lost her grip as the gun bucked, falling flat on her arse. She stared, rooted in place as she realised what kind of mistake she’d made.

The gun had definitely fired. There was barely any noise from it, not even that “Pew” from a silenced Walther P99 firing, but she’d heard the bullet ricocheting off something in the room, and there was a faint trail of smoke wafting from the barrel. That was enough to make her reconsider her suicidally dangerous plan. Her Fight dial had swiftly turned to Flight once she was reminded that Guns Kill and RJ Had Gun.

Snapping back to her senses, she made her next move. Rather than dive forwards again, trying to close the distance before he could turn the gun ninety degrees and pull the trigger, she scrambled for cover. She rolled over and clumsily pushed herself to her feet, forcing herself away from RJ. She couldn’t outrun a bullet. She just had to outrun him deciding to open fire.

She dove for the cover of the corner that had shielded her from his prying eyes before. Now it would have to shield her from prying bullets. She pressed her back into the metal console, dials and switches pressing back into her, as she panted heavily, listening desperately for RJ moving towards her. Her fingers strained against the metal, pushing against it pointlessly, as her heart raced in her chest.
