(Noriko Nakagawa continued from Memorial Address)

The walk to the clinic was taking longer than anticipated, due mainly to the announcements taking place. The names were listed off one by one, with two of the names in particular hitting home. Setting aside her grief just long enough to take note of the danger zones, Noriko crouched down and ticked off the locations. After she was done, she remained in that spot, silently holding back the tears forming in her eyes.

"First Nanahara..." she said quietly to herself "Now Utsumi and Eto..." The reality of the situation was finally beginning to hit her. People were playing, and her friends were dying. One by one, there numbers were getting smaller. The young girl looked behind her to look for Takako and Hiroki. At least... at least those two are still around... for now...

Noriko stood, wiping her hand across her eyes. There had been no tears. She wasn't sure if she had any left at this point. Looking at her map and compass, she managed to determine the best path to take for them to get to the clinic while avoiding the danger zones. They would have to be careful and not stray into G8, but other than that they should be fine. Shouldering her pack once more, Noriko headed off in the direction of the clinic, as the sun slowly dawned on the horizon.

(Hiroki Sugimura continued from Memorial Address)

Just ahead oh Taka and Nakagawa, and Hiroki did not break his stride even as the Announcements came on. Dawn was breaking, and they had yet to reach the Clinic. If they didn't get there safely...

He listened to the names, as he ran. Ijima and Hatagami he'd barely known--the one was just a presence, the other a new student. Sad that they were gone, true, but compared to the loss of Shuuya...

Ogawa's death was much sadder. Kazuhiko would be devastated.

Seto, however, hit him hard.

He stopped moving, his legs shaking so bad he nearly fell. He had been sitting when Shuuya died, so the shock hadn't floored him quite so completely. Now, however...now he could only think of the kind, strange Yutaka Seto, generally close to Shinji. Only guy who could make Mimura crack a smile anytime he pleased; only guy who could break Mimura's cool vanity and make him laugh for real.

Yutaka...

"Shit," he breathed.

(Takako Chigusa continued from Memorial Address)

Takako was heading the group from the back. She wasn't sure why. Perhaps she felt they maybe safer with someone protecting the group from the back instead of the front. It really didn't matter where she was anyway. Takako felt as open and unsafe as if she were in the middle or at the front.

The announcements didn't really hit her as hard as it did Hiroki and Nakagawa. She hadn't been really close to anyone in her class so it was understandable. However she felt a little twinge of guilt as she saw Hiroki stop in his tracks. Takako raised an eyebrow. The hell? From where she was standing, she couldn't see how Hiroki was on the verge of tears. Takako looked at him and placed a hand against his shoulder. She wasn't sure what else to do. All she knew was that Hiroki was feeling more emotion than Takako was about this whole mess. And for that she was envious.

"Sugi," she said, brushing the hair out of her own face. "Don't stop. We need to keep moving." Then she thought. Maybe it wasn't a good idea to ignore Hiroki. She waved to Noriko, trying to get her to stop. "Nor-Nakagawa." She let out a breath. "Let's stop. For a moment."

((Yuka Nakagawa continued from Grief))

Yuka Nakagawa had been keeping a steady pace since she’d left the tourist association, heading out to the west on instinct since the sun wasn’t in her eyes that way. She was still completely devastated by the murder of Kyoichi Motobuchi, blissfully unaware of what he might’ve done to her given the chance, and the announcements only served to make things worse for the stocky, lonely girl. Yutaka; Megumi; Sakuya; Fumiyo; they were all dead, gone forever, and possibly the worst of all was that Yukie, their class rep, one of her best friends, was dead too; she would never get to see her again.

It was a horrible feeling, but she couldn’t stop and start crying again; this time she had a mission: Toshinori Oda, the froggy freak, was a murdering monster and willing to do anything to win the game, and so she had to warn everyone else about him before he shot them too. That task in mind meant that she would just have to grieve later.

Hiking over a small hill, Yuka froze on the spot, illuminated by the sun behind her, as she saw what was on the other side: three people, three other players in the game! Ducking down, she clamped her large hands firmly over her mouth to muffle her breathing, wanting only to remain as silent as possible. Her broad back to the rough ground, she had no way of knowing that the three on the other side were three people she would have easily trusted not to kill her: Nakagawa, her family name double; Sugimara and his own martial arts; and Chigusa, who even Yuka had to admit struck her as a little intimidating, but since she was with those two she wouldn’t have been too nervous to trust her this time.

For now though, whilst she still had no idea who the people were, she could only keep her back against the soil and beg that no-one had spotted her in that brief moment she was stood up in plain sight.

Noriko heard Takako call out to her that they should stop, which the young girl was happy to oblige. Much like Hiroki, the names on the announcements hit her hard. In just the few short hours since this 'game' had begun, many of her friends had been killed. Hiroki looked like he was about to collapse, which was definitely not a good thing. Sure, she and Takako had guns, but if Hiroki was down and out, that just made their chances for survival that much worse. Maybe stopping wouldn't be the best idea afterall.

"We shouldn't stay here too long," Noriko said quietly. "We're too in the open."

Of course, she had another reason for wanting to stay on the move. When they stopped, she got time to think. At this point in time, the last thing she wanted was to give her brain a chance to comprehend the gravity of the situation. She wouldn't be good for anyone, let alone herself, if she was to have a break down now. With every death of her friends, her resolve was getting that much harder to follow through on.

He felt a comforting hand on his shoulder and closed his eyes. There was a long pause, and then Taka asked Noriko if they could stop.

He waited. Nakagawa made the point he needed. "We're too exposed, she's right," he answered. "We've got to get the two of you somewhere same, and fast." He bobbed his head in the direction he thought the clinic was. "You've been hearing the same sounds as me, haven't you?" The screams. The gunshots. "Let's go."

His legs still felt shaky, but he needed to move. Needed to get his mind off it.

Six of his classmates dead. Six of his classmates killed, and not by the government but by their fellow classmates.

He had to stay focused, or both he and Taka would die.

No matter how Takako tried to deny it, Noriko was right. The clearing they just so happened to stop at was, well, a clearing. If anyone with a powerful gun were to jump out and attack them, they would be little chance of getting out of the fight unscathed. This realization made her shiver deeply and not because she was cold. The thought of getting shot, even killed, was such an alien thought that it scared her. Six people were dead... how many of those kids were killed by their own friends?

Chigusa sighed. All of this worrying wasn't doing anything for her health. And what was even worse was that apart from the cameras staring down at her, she had the feeling that someone was watching them... it was probably her imagination. Getting too paranoid. Chigusa rolled her eyes.

"Alright... I'm sure that the clinic isn't that far," she said as she looked down at her map. "We can reach it in a hour or two if we hurry up. Come on." She pushed the map back into her pocket and started walking, now taking the front position as opposed to the back. She tried to go slow enough so the rest could catch up with her - she wasn't taking the front so quickly.

((Kayoko Kotohiki continued from The Worst Game In History))

There wasn't a lot left in the tank for Female Student #8, Kayoko Kotohiki. She'd been only the third student to leave the school building and had been wandering aimlessly ever since, moving away as fast as she possibly could from any suspicious noises or voices, keeping that up all through the night, not even stopping for a nap. Although she had the security of a gun (the manual said it was a CZ 75 - whatever the heck that meant), Kayoko was not particularly fond of the notion of using it. People were killing each other, sure, but did that really mean she had to as well? Staying on the move was working just as well...

Perhaps due to her state of exhaustion, Kayoko's ears didn't pick up on the sound of conversation until she walked straight into the clearing. She stopped in her tracks, her breath quickening as she looked rapidly from person to person. Shit! Sugimura, Chigusa and Nakagawa (Noriko) were all there! Were they moving about together!? Kayoko's eyes settled on the guns that the two girls were carrying. Dammit, this wasn't good, wasn't good at all.

Grasping her gun with both hands, Kayoko pointed it firmly towards the trio and took a couple of tentative steps backward.

"You guys... you guys keep away, alright!? So long as you keep your distance, everything is going to be just fine!" Kayoko edged backwards further. People were bad news, especially groups. Although in normal circumstances she got along with Nakagawa just fine, and Sugimura always seemed nice, these, well, weren't. "Let's all forget we even saw each other, okay?"

I don't want to play... but I can't rely on other people either. I'm no mind reader... they might just want to stab me in the back. I'm safest on my own.

Sugimura moved to the front, stepping front of Taka with a grateful nod. Then Kotohiki appeared, and his mouth had promptly dropped.

He had been quiet, all along their walk. Not because he was scared, though he was, but because he was thinking about his next move. He had to get Taka somewhere safe, and he thought that girls, as a rule, would be better protected in each other's company. The clinic seemed ideal; medical supplies, places to hide. Girls both had guns, which meant they would be safe; he could use one himself, but if any of the three of them could afford to have a different weapon it was probably him.

The main problem, of course, was Kotohiki.

Ever since the stupid game had begun he had been unable to get her out of his mind. He knew exactly what it was, too; Shuuya's death, his noble charge right into the face of the enemy, had reminded him all too strongly of what Shuuya was about. He did exactly what Sugi always tried to do; he lived by his heart, letting neither reason nor fear slow him down.

Stupid, sometimes. But always brave, and always just.

He had found Taka, thank god. He had been half-panicking when she had taken off--she was normally too fast for him to follow--but he had found her. She was alive. She was safe--or at least, as safe as any of them could be, on this island. But there was still Kotohiki--solid, peaceful, beautiful Kotohiki--somewhere on the island, alone, in danger. Even if she had a gun, she would need his help. And anyways, Shu had died for what he believed in. If Sugi really wanted to...wanted to...

He would find Taka and Nakagawa a safe place to shelter, he'd decided, and then he'd go after Kotohiki.

But here she was. She appeared in front of him, blundering out of the woods. He had already raised his sickle, hearing the rustling, and then, whish, crash, there she was.

Kayoko Kotohiki.

He didn't really register her words. He took an involuntary step forwards, his eyes wide and disbelieving. "Kotohiki?" he whispered. "Kotohiki!" He took another step.

The trio was on the move shortly, much to the relief of Noriko. Who knew what kind of crazy people were around. Not that she believed, didn't want to believe, people were killing their fellow classmates. The announcements said otherwise however. People were dying. People were dying and what was she doing, being safely among people she can trust, away from the carnage and the death and whatever insane things were going down. For whatever reason, the beings that were had kept Noriko in relative safety, presenting her with steadfast allies, a good weapon, and away from danger.

Deep in thought, Noriko didn't even realize that someone else had stumbled upon their group until she heard someone talking. Snapping back to reality, the girl searched for the source of the voice, her eyes falling on the terrified form of Kayoko Kotohiki. Normally Noriko didn't interact much with Kayoko, but she was nice enough. However, the terrified young girl was timidly pointing her weapon in their direction. Noriko's tiny hand tightened around her own supplied weapon, but didn't raise it. She didn't know if she would be able to pull the trigger if it came down to it. Maybe she could talk to Kayoko? But what could she say?

"Ko-Kotohiki..."Noriko said quietly. "We don't want to hurt you. Maybe.... we can talk, figure something out?"

Chigusa stopped in her tracks as Kayoko Kotohiki stepped out in front of the group. Without a second's thought she pulled her pistol from the strand of her skirt, pointing it at the nervous girl without any hesitation. She grimaced as the girl brought out a gun of her own, and preceeded to speak to them like they were going to hurt her. If there was one thing that left a bad taste in Chigusa's mouth it was when people looked down at her. What pissed her off even more was that Takako had been foolish enough to draw her gun. Had she played it cool guns wouldn't have been drawn. Chigusa just hmphed and felt a grin cross her face.

"Look who's talking sweet cheeks," she said, the aim of her gun unyielding. She had never fired a gun before but she knew she could shoot. That Chigusa was sure of. "I don't give a shit about you Kayoko. Get out of he..."

That was when Hiroki stepped forward.

Takako looked at her best friend in wide-eyed shock. Chigusa had been ignorant about Hiroki's feeling towards Kayoko. So she was quite confused once the boy made the stupid decision to walk out, with no weapon, towards a girl with a weapon that could rip his head apart. Fear suddenly swept through her veins. This was bad. He could die, right here, right now! The hell was she supposed to do?!She couldn't let him die, but she couldn't let her guard down. What the fuck was she supposed to do? So she did the only think she thought was reasonable.

"For fucks sake Sugi!" she growled, her patience running thin. "Get back here! She has a fucking gun!"

"B-back off!" Kayoko cried. What the heck was Sugimura doing!? She had a gun - he wasn't supposed to walk towards her like that! Why couldn't he just keep his distance and let her go instead of acting like he'd seen a ghost or something!? Kayoko didn't know whether to point the pistol at Sugimura, who was closer, or Takako, who had a gun of her own trained in her direction.

"Sure you'd say that, Noriko, but how I am supposed to know!?" Kayoko edged back further. Why couldn't they see that it didn't make sense to trust people with weapons to watch your back? Wasn't this program's whole moniker 'could you kill your best friend?' - well, Kayoko sure didn't think SHE could do that, but how could you be sure about anybody else? Kotohiki wasn't a mind reader, she didn't know the lengths that people would go to in the name of self-preservation. Better not to leave things to how well you THINK you know people...

Kayoko's eyes flickered to Chigusa. She was more likely than anybody to pull that trigger... Kayoko couldn't understand why Nakagawa would trust her. Sugimura... well, those two were friends, right? But still, class ice queen Takako Chigusa? Kotohiki certainly wasn't comfortable being on the wrong end of her gun.

"Sugimura..." Kayoko gritted her teeth. "Will you just keep back!? I don't want to talk, not with you, Chigusa, anyone!" Another step.

Oh.

He stopped, stared at her. She was scared, he realized; scared to the point of being dangerous. The girl he'd seen arranging flowers on the floor below his dojo wasn't gone, but she was in hiding. Such a girl couldn't possibly survive on this island.

She wouldn't survive on this island.

The realization came almost at once, and he swallowed. She was too scared, holding that gun. She wouldn't be able to fight her way out. She'd panic, and then someone more ruthless than the three of them would take advantage of it. Unfortunately, she did have a gun on the three of them; they were in just as much danger as she.

Had it been just himself, Sugi would have risked talking to her; would have risked her firing. He cared about her, deeply. He could live with harm to himself; he couldn't live with harm coming to her. But it wasn't just himself at risk; if she lost control and fired, Taka and Nakagawa would be in danger.

Disarm her, first. And, once she was disarmed and with them, prove that his intentions were valiant.

"Kotohiki," he said, holding himself very still. "I'm going to do something..." Shuuya' faced flashed in his mind. "Something stupid. Please believe me when I say I don't mean you any harm."

He feinted left--away from Taka and Nakagawa, to draw their fire--and then dove forwards, keeping his body low to the ground and driving the elbow of his right arm--the arm that held the sickle--towards the hand which held her gun.

Yuka kept her back tightly pressed against the floor, praying that none of the three figures would have spotted her. At first, she was all but certain that it was only a matter of seconds before one of them stepped into view, gun in hand, and she'd have to fight for her life; however, as time went on she began to calm down. Maybe they hadn't seen her after all.

In a stint of courage, she rolled over onto her stomach and nervously edged closer to the tip of the mound, just far enough so that she could see what was going on with her potential attackers. To her surprise, there was a fourth one now, stood far away from the first three. Although she couldn't quite make everyone out from the distance, it was only a matter of seconds before they had called out enough names to clarify things up a bunch. The four below her were Kayoko Kotohoki and Noriko Nakagawa, as well as two others who she couldn't put her finger on: she wasn't sure who'd be nicknamed Sugi off the top of her head, and she still couldn't make out the last girl.

Yuka would've been relieved, being perfectly happy to trust Kayoko and Noriko, but even from that distance she knew that something was up: they were screaming at each other, not talking like friends, and Kayoko was keeping her distance whilst pointing something at them. Although she didn't want to believe it, Yuka knew it was possible that she was holding a gun on them all.

”Even Kayoko? But why?!” It had made sense with Oda, that freak, but for Kayoko to play the game too? Why did all this have to happen to them?!

Drawing out her gun for security, clutching it tightly, Yuka remained crouched low in her position and watched the unrecognised Hiroki dart at Kayoko as the air filled with suffocating tension.

In a matter of maybe no more than a minute, things went from bad to worse. Noriko hadn't pointed her gun at the terrified girl in an attempt to show she meant no harm, but Takako had other ideas apparently. This wasn't good. Kayako was visibly shaken by Takako's actions, right out rejecting Noriko's attempt at a non-violent solution. Looking again between the other two members of her group, Takako still holding the gun, Hiroki still moving forwards, and then to Kayoko, this poor girl all alone and terrified. Noriko didn't even want to fathom the torment she must be going through right now. Noriko had to do something.

"Chigusa.... lower your gun. Kotohiki is just scared. I don't thi-" Noriko cut herself off when she noticed Hiroki suddenly dive forward out of the corner of her eye.

Noriko didn't know what Hiroki was planning, but instantly in her mind the scene from the school flashed in her mind again. Shuya charging towards the director.... Kamon was his name?... the terrible ringing in her ears as the report of the firearm went off.... then Shuya falling, falling and bleeding and laying on the ground. Not moving. Lifeless. Only know Shuya was replaced with Hiroki Sugimura, in the place of the soldier, Kayoko Kotohiki. Noriko was terrified by this image, shaking her head to get it out of her head.

"Sugimura, don't!" Noriko shouted in vain.
