Sugimura just wasn't listening to her. What else could she do to make him leave her alone!? She just wanted to be able to leave this clearing and forget the encounter even happened, but he insisted on trying to talk, trying to do... something! Sugimura was planning to... planning to... well, Kayoko couldn't think what he might be planning to do, but it couldn't be anything good. Sure he was there with his soothing words and placating gestures, but if he really wanted to diffuse the situation, why wouldn't he just KEEP HIS DAMN DISTANCE!?

No. No. He was about to try something. Sugimura wanted her to let her guard down so he could get in close and then... well, that would be the end of Kotohiki. He'd tell Chigusa and Nakagawa that she was dangerous, that she was going to shoot them. They were too far away to see - he could make up anything he wanted! Or, they were ALL in this together and they were just waiting for Sugimura to make his move - provide a distraction so they could shoot her!

That impression wasn't alleviated one bit when Sugimura told her - he actually told her he was about to do something! Just trying to fool her! Look! There he was going - he had that sickle in his hands!

He'smovingohgodhe'sgonnakillmeeKAYOKODOSOMETHING!

Kayoko did so. Several somethings, in fact.

She shrieked.

She fell back, flat on her ass.

And she pulled the trigger of her pistol over and over again.

Luck, in a certain sense, was on Hiroki's side.

Luck, in a different sense, was not.

He was faster than Kotohiki--faster by quite a bit. Still, she moved without thinking about it; moving in an act of surprise. He'd move to the right, and her gun was on him, so fortunately neither Nakagawa or Taka were likely to be hit, but...

But she was out of range, and he'd been left exposed.

If she had only dodged backwards, he would have been in trouble. If she had only dodged backwards, she would have been stable enough to fire off a shot from a stable position, unshaken by her fall. He had been left totally exposed; anyone stable would have hit him at once.

She still hit him, even from where was. But it was more of a graze; it tore through the side of his arm, leaving a narrow, blood canal in his flesh. He yelled in agony, and as a haze of pain submerged his brain his reflexes took over.

He was gone by the time she had time to squeeze the trigger a second time, gone in a roll that brought him parallel with her body. He was no longer thinking about keeping her safe, no longer thinking about incapacitating her; he was hurt, seriously hurt for the first time in his life, and the hours of training through which he'd put his body had taken over and left no room for second guesses.

He swung the sickle with all the considerable force of his muscles.

Takako Chigusa let out a loud gasp as she heard the gun go off. The sight of red stung her eyes, Hiroki's scream of pain hurting her just as much at it hurt him. The reality of the sick game she was in flooded her mind and for the first time she was scared. Before she had been a little afraid, but now she was deeply scared.

"Sugi!"

The boy was okay. Sugi was fine. Yet... Chigusa didn't let it go.

Instead she turned to the girl and pointed the gun back at her. She was grinning all the while, but deep down inside she was fuming inside with the strength of a forest fire. The blood had made her mad, more angry than she could ever recall. Kayoko was scared and had just overreacted but Chigusa was having none of that. She gripped the gun with both hands, her hold tight enough to turn her hands completely blue.

"You bitch..."

She stayed silent as she forced a round out, a loud concussion sound that hurt her ears. The recoil was a violent pull upwards but Chigusa used her other hand to counterbalance the recoil the best she could. Takako had been unaware of just how strong the recoil was but she paid no mind to that. Kayoko had hurt Sugi. It could not be forgiven. And once the recoil had subsided, she shot another bullet. And another. AND another. She threw caution into the wind. Chigusa had not even cared how Sugi could be hurt by her sudden burst of rage. Even if Sugi's sickle landed, Takako would make sure that bitch died, even if it was pointless, even if it was stupid to waste bullets.

Yuka's face went white with horror as she watched the events unfold beneath her, desperately clutching her hands tightly over her mouth to prevent herself from crying out in fear, begging them to stop. In just a few seconds the sound of screams had filled the air as Kayako opened fire, as blood flew across the grass and dread filled the unseen observer's heart.

Frozen in place, unable to look away for even a second, Yuka watched as events took a turn for the worst: the guy was still standing, but he was still hurt, and in what felt like an instant he was darting towards Kayoko too, a blade glinting in his hand! He was about to return the attack on her!

As if that was enough, now the other girl was pointing her gun; it was after she had called out that Yuka was finally able to identify her: Takako Chigusa!

She didn't want to think the worst of Takako under normal circumstances, but all she was seeing then and there was a screaming girl pointing her gun at Kayoko; even if Kayoko had shot the guy, who she finally realised must have been Hiroki Sugimara considering how Takako and him were close friends, Takako was pointing a gun at someone; she was doing it too! Images of Oda stuck in her mind, as he pulled that trigger with that demented smirk on his face. Just like Oda, Takoko was killing her classmates!

There were three different murderers on the island: Oda, Kayako, Hiroki AND Takako. They were all murderers, murderers with weapons; they were going to kill each other! They were killing everyone! Everyone was killing! But why?! Why did this have to happen to them!?

BANG! The shot echoed around the open plains as Takoko opened fire. BANG! Her firing continued, piercing the air with that nightmarish noise. BANG! The noises wouldn't stop; they just went on and on and on.

From her spot on the hill, she could see it all.

In her blind panic, Kayoko's eyes were squeezed shut as she pulled the trigger of her gun, firing off shots haphazardly without even attempting to aim, hoping that the sheer rate of fire would be enough to get Sugimura away from her.

This was in vain.

The end, mercifully, was quick.

There was a dull thunk as Hiroki's sickle plunged into the side of her head. Kayoko jolted once, her eyes snapping open but seeing nothing. Her mouth was wide open, as if to scream again, but any cry was utterly soundless.

For a few moments, she remained in her seated position and then, with a dreadful finality, she went over backwards, those wide staring eyes now looking up at the sky.

No more fear.

Hiroki hadn't listened to either of the girls, and everything seemed to go to hell. Kayoko shot, injuring Hiroki in some fashion, which had pissed off Takako, who had begun firing without warning. Not that it mattered, as Hiroki swung his sickle, and with a sickening thud, it planted itself in the unfortunate girl's head. There was no doubt about it. She was dead. Thankfully Takako's bullets appeared to miss not only Kayoko, but everyone else at the same time.

Noriko couldn't take it any more, as she sunk to her knees. This was all too real. Before, it had felt like a dream, but now, having seen a real, living, breathing girl have her life quickly and brutally taken away from her.... but, it had been in self defense right? Kayoko had attacked first, had tried to kill Hiroki. Hiroki didn't want to hurt Kayoko, but he only did what was necessary... Kayoko was dangerous... but did she truly deserve to die? Did any of them? Well, what's done is done. Hiroki and Kayoko were just trying to defend themselves, she could still trust them... right? Hiroki was Shuya's friend, Shuya probably would have done the same thing. Yes, she would still be safe with them... for now.

He withdrew, pulling the sickle from her skull without anything but a feeling of triumph racing through him and numbing the pain. That was right; he'd struck, struck quickly, struck without hesitation. He'd managed to stop someone dangerous to him, someone who could hurt him, and he had promised himself that he would never hurt again. For that he had trained himself, for that he had acquired the strength that allowed him to...

to...

Kill Kayoko.

Time froze.

He saw droplets of blood in midair, raining gently from the sharp blade of his weapon. He saw the blade itself, covered with her blood. He saw her startled face, almost comically surprised, the tears leaking from the corner of her eyes. She had been terrified; she had always found something scary about Sugimura, had said so herself when they were taking care of the cat together. And then, the moment she'd hurt him--

No. The moment he had failed to stop her.

He was nothing if not quick. As time started moving again he tossed the sickle aside, catching her body as she fell backwards. "Kayoko...?" he whispered. He knew all too well that it was a stupid effort; he had seen the blade slide into her temple, had put it there himself. A simple blow to the temple was enough to kill some; a sickle, aimed with years of precision and training.

"Kayoko," he repeated, but this time it wasn't a question. It was a confession, an admission.

One final time. "Ka...Kayoko."

He leaned forwards and closed her eyes. Tears were spilling out, hot and fast; a bubbling fear lurked within him, twisting him. His hands were shaking as he laid her down, pried the gun from fingers panic had clench. He tried to rise but could not; his body was shaking too badly.

He had killed her. He had killed the girl he'd wanted so badly to protect. He had killed her unflinchingly, unthinkingly, with a faint sense of victory and accomplishment.

"Oh, God," he said softly.

And then he ran.

He stumbled to his feet and took off, ran without even a backwards glance at Takako and Noriko, but it was not without a thought to their safety. He was strong enough to protect them--he no longer had any doubt of that. But...

But did they need his protection? Or did they need to be protected from him?

Oh, God.

Chigusa was so enraged that that fact that all of her bullets had missed Kayoko completely had flown over her head. She had finished the clip in her gun off and was in the middle of reloading when she realized that she missed. Takako was understandably upset once it hit her. She grit her teeth and threw the pistol at the fresh corpse of Kayoko, letting out a childish growl all the while. Fuck! The bitch hadn't been that far away, and Chigusa had emptied an ENTIRE clip. Yet she had missed by a mile! What the fuck!

"God damn it!" she yelled. Frustration wasn't even a close enough word to use for how much anger she felt. While it was very unlike her to get hotheaded, Kayoko had hurt Sugi. She didn't give a shit about anyone else but him, fuck everyone else. Hiroki was her friend, her best friend. She would do anything to protect him. And yet she couldn't even hit a red target in a school uniform. That was what pissed off Takako - what use was she?! She couldn't hit shit!

She lowered the gun, her heart pounding like mad. She was panted like an animal! It's fine! It's okay! The bitch is dead. Calm down.

This was when Hiroki ran off. Any other time Chigusa would have caught on, would have ran after Hiroki. However she just hadn't noticed him running off like a stooge. She was breathing deeply now. Takako was composed now, thank god. Takako didn't like it when she was angry. Takako was scary when she was angry. She walked over to Kayoko and picked up the gun as though nothing had happened. Chigusa reached into her bag and reloaded, struggling to push the clip all the way in. She left the spent cartridge on the ground and turned to look at Hiroki… wait, where was Hiroki?

"Sugi?" Takako blinked. She turned and looked around for the boy. "Sugi?!" She turned to Noriko desperately. Noriko had sunk to her knees but Chigusa had overlooked this. "Noriko, where did Sugi go? He was just here a second ago!"

No.

NO!

It had all happened so fast! Kayoko, she was dead! Dead! Hiroki, he had, he had killed her like a piece of meat! He'd stabbed her in the head like it was nothing, and now she was dead! She was dead, and there was nothing she could do!

It was no good, she couldn't focus on it anymore; even with the stream of tears clouding her vision, Yuka forced herself away from the scene of carnage, rolling onto her back again and staring in horror at the sky. Why, why did Kayoko have to die?! It didn't make sense: everyone was killing like Oda! He was the only monster there, wasn't he!? He was the only one who'd do it without caring! So why was everyone else taking part too!?

Delusional with fear and grief, Yuka shook her head whilst clenching her eyes shut, clamping her hands over her ears and trying to block out the echoes of gunfire and the crimson sight of spraying blood. She didn't want to face any of it anymore, she just wanted to shut her eyes and for all of this to go away forever. No-one would be killing anyone, and all her friends would be safe and sound on the school trip! They just had to be, they just had to!

It wasn't working though.

Even as she lay there, trying to make herself believe that none of it was real she could still feel the grass beneath her neck; the icy wind in the air; the pounding of her terrified heart. This situation was reality, and it wasn't changing because she wanted it to. She was trapped in that nightmare, and there was no way out: Yuka Nakagawa was on the island, and people around her were dying.

She couldn't stay there, she realised, as she heard the shouts of Takako from the hill behind her. She would have to leave for now, find somewhere safe to go: somewhere where she could get her thoughts straight and shut out everything else.

Clambering to her feet, too distraught to be worried about remaining unseen, Yuka clutched her bag tightly in one hand, her gun in the other, and ran back the exact way she had came. For the moment forgetting that Kyoichi had been murdered there, she ran back in the direction of the tourist association; it was somewhere she had cried before. She would be able to cry there again.

Noriko quickly snapped out of her mental thought once Takako said her name, asking where Hiroki went. She looked around, slightly confused. He had been there with them not but a few minutes ago. No matter how much she looked though, there was no sign of the boy.

"I...I didn't see him run off..." Noriko said, hoping that Takako wouldn't be angry at her.

Noriko willed strength back to her legs, slowly regaining an upright position. Then she began to think. Maybe they could figure out where he went? If there was a trail or something... Noriko slowly made her way to Kayoko's body, her legs barely co-operating with her demands. It was a horrific sight to behold, blood leaking out of the wound. It was an actual, real corpse. It wasn't the first one she had seen, that had been Shuya's back in the classroom. This one was different though. Kayako was just a scared, innocent girl, her life taken by a classmate. All this would have been avoided if they had just... just listened to her demands to stay away. Now, it was too late...

As Noriko looked down at Kayako's prone form, something caught her eye. It was very brief, but there seemed to be one or two bloody footprints going away from the body. It wasn't much to go by, but it would give them a general direction... which was away from the clinic.

"There's a trail here... kinda" Noriko said to catch Takako's attention. "Do we follow it or continue to the clinic?"

Chigusa frowned. The frown sat on her face like it was always meant to he there. She was upset that she let Hiroki run off without her. Her frown slowly turned into a heavy scowl. "Well fuck Noriko. What good are you, letting Sugi run off like that?! It's not like I was asking for-"

Chigusa shut up. In truth, Noriko had done nothing wrong. Chigusa was mad at herself, and she was taking it out on Noriko. That was... too mean. She bowed her head, a thing that Takako almost never did.

"I-I'm sorry. " She apologized, the words wounding her like a knife to the gut.

Chigusa kept her head down in shame until Noriko noticed the bloody footprints. Takako shot her head up and walked over to where the other girl was standing. Her mind rushed, trying to get a logical idea of what they should do.

It would not be a good idea to run through the forest. Might get ambushed. But Sugi...

With her pulse racing, her blood boiling but her face still very calm, Chigusa held Noriko by the shoulder. "We follow after him, of course. The clinic can wait. Sug- Hiroki is liable to get himself killed out there if he runs around like an idiot."

That idiot, that stupid idiot, where is he running from? If it was about Kayoko, the bitch almost killed him, he wasn't the bad guy. Sugi's a good person, he wouldn't kill anyone intentionally. He was only playing it safe! He was only... oh my god. Am I really trying to make killing a girl into a small deal? What is happening to me? This game is fucking me up so much, and I don't even realize it. Shit. No. Wait. Worry about that later. Sugi is in trouble. Can't have him die. Don't want to be alone.

Chigusa gripped her pistol and motioned for Noriko to get moving. "Come on. He couldn't have gone far."

Noriko shook her head absentmindedly, to indicate to Takako not to worry about it. It was her fault. Well, partially anyways. Instead of sitting on the ground feeling sorry for herself, she should have been watching, and making sure they didn't split up. There was safety in numbers, and with Hiroki gone, there was no telling what would happen. Takako seemed to be thinking the same thing, telling Noriko that they were going to follow Hiroki. The foot prints weren't much to go by, but it was better than nothing.

"Right..." Noriko said, taking a few tentative steps away from Kayako. She expected the tears to start flowing, but there was none. Noriko was out of tears. Still, she couldn't help but feel bad for Kayako's untimely death. "I'm sorry..." she said before turning back to Takako, and began walking in the direction that was indicated by the foot prints.
