Look Out!

Open

The lookout tower sits atop a large hill and is shrouded in trees. It's an unimpressive building, but it used to be the primary defense post on the island. Maybe it can be your eye in the sky as well? It'd be a great place for a small group to rally together and hide from the island's baddies, and an even better place for those baddies to snipe the rest of the competition from above.

The ladder gave a creak as someone else started up. It seemed like Nicole had managed to miss another approaching student. That wasn't good at all. She and Anthony would have to figure out some sort of watch rotation to prevent any more little surprises, assuming, of course, that this new arrival didn't necessitate their rapid departure.

Anthony nodded, and Nicole took his meaning, getting her gun ready but keeping her finger off the trigger. There was no need to take careless risks. Anthony was positioning himself beside the ladder. Unless whoever was coming up was planning on starting shooting right away, Nicole thought they would be at a severe disadvantage.

Then again, there was no need to turn this into a fight or a confrontation. Better to keep things friendly and safe.

"Hey," she called. "This is Nicole. You can come up, but don't have any weapons out. I'm not looking for trouble."

She gave Anthony a little nod of her own. She was willing to reveal that she was here, to show a little trust to the newcomer, but it would be best to keep Anthony a surprise, just in case.

“Yeah, sure. Whatever.” Janet mumbled back in response, arms relaxing as her grip on the ladder loosened. Nicole’s request to come unarmed was still alien to Janet, but not as incomprehensible as it could have been an hour ago. Janet wasn’t going to make a big deal out of it, whatever her motivations were, not for no good reason.

As her feet pushed herself up past the last few steps and her head cleared the edge of the lookout tower, Janet met face to face with her new company. The first was Nicole Husher of the student council, only familiar to Janet for her position and war on men a year ago. Whilst Janet had voted her for whatever spot she had, though she could never claim to have given the decision much thought, she had never sympathised with her attitude towards guys out of the inexperienced belief that Nicole was wrong: Janet was far more prone to get into a shouting match with the boys than to be hit on by them. The second, Anthony Rollins, was even less notable in Janet’s eyes: kind of a shrimp and hung around with that other girl, Megan; that was pretty much everything as far as OH SHIT HE HAD A KNIFE!

Janet almost propelled herself off the ladder out of reflex right there and then as she moved to back away from the knife, her bag swinging out from under her as if trying to pull her down with it. She would have fallen to her untimely end there and then were it not for her fingers gripping the steel in panic at the sight of the blade. Sweat started to glisten off her brow, her eyes fixating on the weapon that so resembled Sidney’s war scythe that had been aimed at her only a short while ago and her heart gaining speed in her chest.

She was frozen on the spot, vulnerable to even the slightest attack as she tried to react to the situation. "Can you put that away? Already seen one today." she finally said, the words pushing out from behind her gritting teeth.

The girl who showed up was tall-ish (especially to him). Anthony recognized her as Janet Claymont, and that was about the extent of his knowledge of her. He was taken aback by her reaction to the knife; he was just holding the damned thing, not shaking it at her while the violins from a fucking Hitchcock film were blaring.

Still, in the interest of keeping her calm, he retracted the blade and put the knife away. He held his hands out, palm up, to show he had nothing left to scare her with.

"Did a strange knife kill your parents or something?" He asked. Probably not a good joke to make, considering the circumstances. But her reaction had unnerved him into saying it. He hadn't attacked anyone.

Yet.

The girl assented, then made her way into view. Nicole knew her by sight, but couldn't really bring a whole lot to mind. Janet Claymont was a cheerleader, Nicole thought, and maybe into some other sort of sports, but there wasn't much else she had to go on. Maybe Janet was with some guy? That rang a bit of a bell.

It wasn't something Nicole pondered too much, because Janet seemed completely terrified by Anthony's knife. That was an odd reaction, especially considering that Nicole was holding a gun. She lowered her right hand until it rested behind her thigh, letting her leg hopefully block the weapon from Janet's view. There was no need to scare the girl more. On the other hand, Nicole wasn't about to disarm herself given the sort of extreme physical reaction Janet was displaying, as she visibly began to sweat. Nicole couldn't at all be sure that Janet wouldn't panic and try something, and that could lead to serious problems.

Thankfully, Anthony put his knife away like Janet requested. That settled it: Anthony was the one in this situation Nicole was trusting the most for the moment. She was pretty sure he was making a very calculated choice, too. Putting the knife away put him in danger, but it also kept Janet's attention on him and his actions, and off the gun Nicole had. Anthony was trusting that she would bail him out if there was trouble. It felt good to have someone's vote of confidence.

The slightly off color joke was a possible point of tension, so Nicole tried to smooth it over, quickly adding a few words of her own.

"Hey, Janet. You alright? Stuff bad out there?"

She hoped things weren't going wrong already. It felt too soon. Of course, she didn't imagine it would ever be a good time for her classmates to go insane and kill each other.

Luckily for Janet, Anthony showed himself to be far more co-operative than Sidney Rice had been as he retracted his blade without getting into a five minute standoff. Her panic subsided almost as quickly as it had begun, though her heart refused to slow down completely: it was still early days.

Letting out a breath and ignoring Anthony’s dickish humour, Janet finally pulled herself up the last few steps of the ladder and onto the lookout tower, her feet regaining stable ground at last. She wasted no time in turning to face them both, her hand wrapped around the strap of her day pack, unsure whether to take it off and give her shoulder a rest, or keep it on so that her legs were ready to leave at a moment’s notice.

The fatigue of walking around for an hour non-stop made the decision for her, however, as she found herself slumping against the ground with barely a moment to realise she was doing it. As she panted for breath, her eyes shifted between Nicole and Anthony, still unsure what to make of the two students she knew almost nothing about.

“Yeah, Sidney Rice was waving a spear around.” She said to Nicole, letting out another breath afterwards. At least these two weren’t trying to kill her on sight, that was a plus over her last company. With any luck the Texan would have been the only one who'd gone nuts and she could ride out this whole thing somewhere quiet.

She had yet to notice Nicole’s concealed gun.

“I don’t know, she might've lost it, but I might've shut her up. I don’t know.”

Anthony noted the name of the girl Janet mentioned. She was asthmatic, if he remembered correctly which was a good thing to know considering she was being threatening. She also spent a lot of time at one point wearing a cowboy hat. So...yeah. Maybe not the most stable girl.

Anthony rubbed his forehead, blew out a small puff of air. "I guess we'll burn that bridge when we come to it." He leaned back against the lip of the tower. "All she had was a spear? No guns or anything like that?" Information was good. Information could be a better weapon than even that Colt Nicole had.

Apparently, Sidney Rice had gone off the rails. Nicole knew of the girl. She was new, a little strange. She didn't seem like the sort who'd kill, but neither did anyone else in her class. Janet's phrasing made Nicole a little bit suspicious; it sounded like the girl had done something to Sidney. Maybe she'd just shouted her down. Maybe she'd killed her and hid the body. With a little bit of horror, Nicole realized that there would be no way to verify Janet's story if Sidney was dead. That would lead to complications, Nicole could easily see how trust would be hard to come by in this situation. She was just glad she had met up with Anthony before either of them had been in any sort of tough situation. She could trust him, and she could trust David. Perhaps she would be able to trust Janet, too.

Anthony pressed for more details about Sidney. A spear could be dangerous, but Nicole figured nobody in class would know how to use one right. She suspected it would take a bit less skill to shoot someone, especially someone unsuspecting at close range. Nicole was also curious to see what Janet said because it might substantiate her claim. So far as Nicole knew, they'd only been given one weapon each, and she doubted anyone would have killed or managed to steal anyone else's equipment this quickly, allowing for the fact that the encounter between Sidney and Janet had occurred at some point before Janet's arrival at the tower.

Nicole kept quiet, waiting for the reply.

And speak of the devil, and he shall appear.

Or rather, she.

((Sidney Rice continued from Magical Reaper Girl Warrior Sidney-Chan))

It was a bit of a strain, carrying all this around. But she could manage.

She slung the scythe over her shoulder as she walked along, still simmering after the encounter with Janet.

Really, Sidney had calmed down before, but FUCK Janet. No seriously, fuck her with a ten foot rake. Sidney agreed to put it down, and what did she get out of it? More bitching. Classy, Janet, classy! Really, she was surprised she stayed alive long enough before all this bullcrap. Because you know what? That shit got you killed.

Sure, Sidney was a bitch, but at least she admitted it. Janet... Janet... didn't put the wrench down even after the scythe was down. Really, she wouldn't be surprised if Ass-Bole or someone got their hands on her some time after. Heck, even Craig! That would have to be the most humiliating way to die. Or what's her face girl who keeps butting into people's business with her "newstories"! Or even Smythe! That last one had to be the worst. Bar none. Maybe he'd mistake her for a cheeseburger or something.

Eh, Janet, either someone else was going to deal with her or she'd deal with her later. Either way, she had the feeling she wasn't going to survive long.

Anyways... that clearly wasn't a good strategy. Oh yes Sidney, run up to people pointing the sharp objects at them. That was such a good idea. To be honest, Sidney, deep down, was still hesitant about killing. Killing must have been difficult. But she didn't want to die, or lose. Dying and losing combined. Either way, same thing. It was going to be hard, but at least she'd survive.

Sidney squinted in the distance as she saw what she recognized as a lookout tower. Oh, that was a good thing to have. It was on top of a hill, and surrounded by all these trees. Perfect. She could climb up there. Maybe get a good idea of her surroundings. And then she could just sit up there and...

Think of a better strategy.

As she approached the base, she stopped, and then frowned. There... was a minor conundrum there. Sidney had the bag and scythe to take up with her. There was a ladder. Ladders meant the use of hands. Hmmm... she could risk it and just go with one hand, couldn't she?

As she stepped onto the ladder, she grabbed the upper rung with one hand and kept the scythe down in the other. It was a bit of work, keeping the scythe's sharp end away from her so it wouldn't cut her and pulling the rest of her things up as well. So she went slowly, her heart racing.

One slip-up meant that she could fall, or that she could stab herself in the face with her scythe, or both. So she had to be careful, of course.

As she stepped towards the middle of the ladder, she could hear voices. She couldn't make them out, but she could hear them. Damn it! Someone-in fact a group- had made it before her. Sidney frowned. Well, it was time for another confrontation. Maybe she could try something different. Maybe try to be their friends for the time being. And then deal with getting rid of them later.

She didn't know that her new archnemesis was up there. Not yet, at least.

“Fuck if I know.” Janet shrugged in response to Anthony. “If she did, she didn’t use it. Just had the spear then she started, I don’t know, having an asthma attack or something. Anyway she was on the floor doing nothing, so I left. Not really worth sticking around, you know?”

She let out a breath of relief, resting her head against the tower’s lip. Considering they’d yet to threaten her apart from having the knife out, the two were miles ahead of Sidney in Janet’s books. The fact had not been missed that she didn’t know the two well at all, no better than Sidney, but the first impression was still much better; first impressions were the best Janet could go on for now.

As shaken up as she had been by her last encounter with another classmate, she was almost beginning to relax with these two. Let Sidney be an isolated case, as far as she cared; not every other student was going to lose it so fast, she wasn’t going to let herself start thinking that. That fucker wasn’t going to get to everyone so easily.

Her calm shattered at the sound of another person heading up the ladder, her eyes shooting to the ladder’s top and freezing on the spot. She cursed under her breath, wondering if someone had followed her. No way wouldn’t she have seen anyone else when she was at the bottom: the place may have been surrounded by trees but she’d have seen someone else in the clearing under the tower. She wasn’t blind.

As the sound of feet clinking against the ladder grew closer, one foot at a time, she moved forwards, crouching on the spot as she watched the top for the new company. Her body arched, ready to pounce at a moment’s notice as her hand crept towards her wrench, gripping the handle once again. There was no way to tell who was going to come up without getting right over the hole, but two sharp objects in her face in an hour had put her on edge.

Things were not in Sidney’s favour.

Anthony heard the steps the same time as Janet did.  He cursed internally for it.  Two people was enough.  He didn't want to get dragged into a big group.  He edged up next to Janet, so he could peer over the edge.

Speak of the...

Huh.

If Anthony didn't want his companions to think ill of him, he would have smiled.  Here was an opportunity that he hadn't foreseen.  And it all seemed so...perfect.

Here he was Anthony the Stalwart.  He rested a hand on Janet's shoulder, pulling her back as he gave her a grim nod.

Here he was Anthony the Brave.  He took the lip of the tower by the edge and leaned over, seeing Sidney in all her glory.

Here he was Anthony the Prepared.  The switch was in his hand, popped out and open.  He waited for Sidney to get closer.

And now he was Anthony the Butcher, a plan formed, his body blocking the view, the ghost of a smirk touching the corner of his lips.

"Hey."  He said softly to the girl mounted on the ladder.

The knife flickered out in a clumsy swing at her face.

Alright, just talk to these people, see if they're friendly. If not, then go. Get rid of them? Maybe. But she didn't know what they were doing up there. Gah, some part of her wanted to just quietly get back down and then go back on her way. And yet, here she was, still climbing, her heart still rapidly beating.

As she climbed upwards, she could see a figure at the top. That was Rollins, the short black guy who kept hanging around that weird girl. Okay. She kind of doubted he would do anything. Didn't seem like it.

He was probably smarter than Janet, as well, so he wouldn't do anything stupi-

Just as she reached the top, a stinging pain came across her cheek.

Sidney heard herself scream. Seriously, what the hell was he doing? He was just stabbing at her from the top! The fuck!

She lost balance, and one of her feet slipped off the rung, leaving her hanging by one hand at the very top and one foot on a rung. He just sliced at her face and it probably got at her cheek and what the fuck! She felt a dull ache in her arm as she hung, a good portion of her weight on it.

Sidney's face contorted in rage. Oh, want to mess? Fine. She could mess too.

Her foot found its way back to the rung, and she in turn awkwardly swung the scythe upwards. Her body still ached from the climbing and brief hanging, never having been used to such positioning, but there was a burst of unexpected energy in the small, unathletic girl.

"FUCK YOU!" she screamed at the top of her lungs.

((Mild gm'ing approved))

The awkward scythe blow Sidney tried would have been easy to avoid, considering Anthony had the advantage of gravity and balance. But he hadn't expected her to fight back. He had thought his own knife would have hit home.

He could work with this, though, Made everything better.

The blade bit into his arm just below the elbow, a glancing hit but enough to draw blood and hurt like a bitch. He cried out; but exaggerated it a little for the sake of the two behind him. The girl swung again, but he managed to avoid the second attack.

"Fuck!" He screamed, even as he reversed the grip on his switchblade. The knife fell.

The blade sunk into Sidney's hand. The one holding onto a ladder. But she hung on. Bitch was stubborn.

Anthony had to stop a growl from erupting in his throat as he leaned out of the tower a little bit farther, reaching his free hand out to grab a handful of the girl's dark hair. He drew her in hard, spiking her head against the tower with a dull thump.

Finally she lost her grip and fell off the tower to the ground below. Even as she toppled Anthony knew the bitch probably wasn't done. He'd have to go down there.

Anthony slumped against the edge of the tower, wincing at the pain in his arm. When he finally looked back at Janet and Nicole, he had a look of abject (carefully composed) horror.

"She attacked me. It was...I...God."

He managed to make his eyes well up with tears. Anthony was beginning to think he should have been an actor instead of a cameraman.

He showed the girls the place in his shirt where Sidney's sickle had raked him. He glanced back over the edge of the tower, to see where Sidney had landed.

"M...Maybe she's ok. I'm gonna...gonna check on her. You guys..just stay here."

Without hearing any protests from the other two, Anthony pulled himself down the ladder.

((K, so it'll be Kami then me then her as far as the death. If you guys wanna do reactions that's cool. Is it ok if we burn it out as fast as possible before returning to normal post order?))

She felt the scythe collide, among the blur of things that happened.

He swore.

She swung again.

She missed.

A sharp pain in her hand.

She almost lost balance.

Her hair was grabbed.

A pain in her forehead.

And she fell.

For a moment, time stood still. With wide eyes behind her glasses, Sidney watched as Anthony swiftly drew farther from her, and suddenly, she felt a pain on her back.

She laid on the ground on her back, in pain. Her face hurt. Of course it would be after getting slashed across the cheek and then having your head thumped against the tower. Her right hand hurt. Of course it would be after getting it fucking stabbed. Her... general chest area hurt. Sidney was worried she had broken something in the fall.

Thing was, though, she was alive. Somehow she survived that.

Sidney felt something moist on her face, but tried her best to disregard it. Trying her best to look around her, she saw that her bag and scythe landed not too far from her. The bag had fallen from her shoulder and landed near the ladder. As she looked to her right, she saw the scythe was only a grab away from her fingers.

And that's all she could manage. Sidney felt dizzy, and though she wanted to stand and run the fuck away, she couldn't. Maybe it was because she broke something. What, she didn't know. Maybe she was too dizzy. Or maybe she just couldn't find the willpower.

A few noises came from the ladder, and slowly, Sidney realized he was coming down. Or at least, someone was. As she tried her best to lift her head, her suspicions were correct.

She just watched him lift himself down, and she did the first thing that came to mind.

Sidney raised her good hand, and...

Did what you'd expect from her. She flipped him off.

Frankly, he deserved it.

After she lowered her hand, it rested on the scythe. Even after being this fucked up, she still had a bit of fight in her.

((Skipping for the sake of getting the death done))

When Anthony touched down and made it to the supine girl, she looked pitiful and broken. Something had given in her body when she had hit the ground; her leg was twisted at an awkward angle. There was a rapidly growing bruise purpling the spot where he had smashed her head into the tower. He was amazed she was still breathing.

And defiantly flipping him off. He briefly entertained the notion of bringing his foot down on her hand, but got the feeling that particular action would be hard to conceal if Nicole or Janet had decided to watch.

So instead he crouched down beside the girl, in such a way that his arms were still concealed by his back and it looked for all the world like he was inspecting her. Really, he was figuring out the best way to finish Sidney off. He didn't need her having a last burst of life and cluing either of the other girls in to what had transpired.

At first he thought he might slit her throat, but that would be hard for him to sell that he'd managed to do to the girl in their struggle. Maybe the chest, but he was unsure of where the heart was. He was a cameraman; not an anatomist.

When he had it, he swallowed past a lump in his throat. He really didn't like doing this. Any of this. But he would be one kid closer to getting back to his own life.

"Gonna have a headache this big..." He muttered, the comfort of quoting something from television keeping him calm as he gestured with the switchblade. He leaned over Sidney and attempted to push the sharp end of the blade into her temple.

He hadn't reckoned on her skull impeding his progress. He took a deep, sharp breath, and put some effort into it. The blade sunk into the girl's head, disappearing for a second before he withdrew it and stabbed it in a second time. Whatever light that was left in Sidney's eyes went dead as the knife extinguished it.

He blinked. Didn't realize he was holding his breath until he was almost out and took a gulp of it.

"Jesus." He muttered. He sat back on his heels and pulled his knees up to his chest. She was dead, and he had done it.

He didn't know if it was good or bad that he felt like he could do it again. And again.

The tears that flowed down his cheeks this time were real, but Anthony felt like his humanity was leaving with them.

Yeah. He could do this again. He needed to get home. And he needed to get through everyone else to do it.

Her hand tried its hardest to grip the handle, but she had trouble lifting it.

She watched as her opponent approached her, with wide eyes. She kept trying to tell herself to stand, but she couldn't. She couldn't budge. Her chest kept hurting, and her leg wasn't moving. She wasn't sure if it was fear or if she was that injured.

Fear was genuinely in her eyes, as she realized that she couldn't run away and how hard it was to lift the scythe. Her fingers found its way around, but she couldn't lift it, not with her strength. She felt so dizzy, that she could barely process what was going on.

Rollins was kneeling nearby her now, that she could understand. He was clearly examining her, like she was some piece of meat at the supermarket.

Suddenly, Sidney wished she wasn't here. She wished she hadn't gone on the trip. She wished that some asswipe hadn't decided to kidnap them. She wished that her parents didn't decide to send her to Highland Beach. She wished that she didn't have that ill-fated near-death experience so she'd be back at home, doing whatever and minding her own business.

Sidney was trapped. She was completely at the mercy of Anthony Rollins, there was no mistake about that. Her hand kept gripping, and she kept trying to lift.

She hoped he rotted in hell. She expected to see him there. Yeah, see you in hell, Anthony.

It wasn't supposed to end like this. She was supposed to win, and make it home. Sidney never liked losing. And now? She lost in the worst possible way. She didn't even see it coming. She didn't want to lose. But here she was. And she was scared. She was horrified. Sidney thought she could win easily, but not anymore. Just like that, she laid here, broken like a child's toy and at the mercy of a kid she wouldn't have met if she wasn't so...

He finally spoke, mentioning headaches. It was as if he was trying to pull off some badass one-liner-

Oh. That wasn't good.

Sidney saw the knife come towards her face, and she tried to move her head away. He couldn't do that! She wouldn't allow him to! This time, the moisture continued, but neither it nor her moving her head stopped the knife from meeting her temple.

"N-no", she could only murmur softly.

She could feel it only poking at the skin at first, but he pushed harder, and she briefly felt it slide inside.

Sidney couldn't feel the second time.
