Looking Out for Number One

When Jay says go... (Open)

A large, old warehouse found between the mess hall and the parish. The corners are covered with cobwebs, and there are a few cracks in the floor showing its age. Mostly emptied of the ores it once held, the warehouse does still contain a table, chairs, assorted empty boxes, nets, and a number of corroded tools.

Looks like one of them, the girl, heard him too.

She'd stopped mid-sentence, shadow of her head moving as though she were scanning the area. Find him? No, he wasn't going to be their first victim.

His breathing went to a stand-still. He thought of what he could possibly do. He really wished he'd checked his backpack ahead of time, now. Unzipping it this second, would clearly be heard considering they heard him earlier, when he could have sworn he was dead silent. His thoughts tried summarizing, rummaging through like computer data on what he had just been eavesdropping on, trying to figure out what information he could use.

Net, they spoke of nets, so obviously they had at least one at their disposal, an option to trap him, which means he'd have to be extra careful and watch out for one of those. Hack? Hack someone away, sharp, that meant they had a blade of some kind. He'd have to keep a good distance. Teamwork, they were a team of two so Kyran would have to watch his back for the other, then divide and conquer.

Chop Susie, though, she was for sure the more demented of the two, by run-down of their conversation. It sounded like the guy, Captain Ahab, was a bit less comfortable with the thought of killing, but that voice, that speech pattern was way too familiar, he knew it, but could not yet put a face to it. At least they were smaller, especially the girl and from deciphering the clues and reading between the lines, they had no firearms either. He still wanted to know who these two were though, it was too important not to. However, he'd need to live or else it would be pointless to know. He'd need to get out of there, especially now that they were aware and probably ready for searching and then destroying.

Kyran froze in place, backing up only slightly, looked up at the shelves and the contents of the warehouse, a plan formulating.

“Huh? I didn’t hear anything.”

But she was already walking past him, and he decided to follow suit. There was still that ringing in his ears, so he guessed that explained that. He dug a finger into his ear, pulling out a chunk of wax, but it had no effect.

Meh. Priorities.

He stuck with Saachi as they moved, if only because he didn’t have any plan of action of his own. It was a big place, there were plenty of places whoever it was could hide. If he had more self-preservation, or considered the possibility that the mystery guest was toting an AK-47, he might’ve been concerned. Maybe.

He looked back down at the net in his hands, thought back to Saachi’s weapon. He was still sulking.

“Ok, how about whoever finds them gets the cleaver?”

He was paying no mind to volume, or to how the suggestion might’ve sounded. It broke the silence, and that was enough for him.

Was it possible to go crazy that quickly into the game? Though she would like to say no, she honestly didn't know. Was it possible to check on one's sanity?

No. She was sane. She was certain someone else was here. Jay probably just didn't hear. Or couldn't? He seemed to talk to her just fine, so that was out of the picture. No, she would just have to prove that someone else was here.

Now more than ever, Saachi was determined. The warehouse wasn't small, but she was going to find this kid that she knew had to be here. Her hearing couldn't be deceiving her, not this early on. She briskly searched the area, making sure to turn over any unturned box, table or anything that could possibly be used to hide. She refused to let some random kid get the better of her.

She didn't even acknowledge Jay's comment. She was too busy searching, too busy trying to justify her much-deserved mania as she went through shelf after shelf. She wished that Jay had been a bit more useful. He seemed to just be following her around like a lost puppy dog. Jesus, why wasn't he helping her search? Did he not care about potentially being ambushed by someone?

"Wait." Saachi suddenly stopped, holding up a hand to indicate to Jay to be silent. She saw rustling. One of the boxes on a nearby shelf moved, just a little bit. She let out a quick exhale of relief as she pointed Jay in the direction of the box.

"That just moved, they must be there. You have the net. Would you mind going on ahead if you would be so kind? I'll be ready behind you with the cleaver."

No way in hell was Saachi going first when she could send someone else instead. She kept a short distance behind Jay, cleaver clutched tightly in her hand. This was it. This was the beginning. The true start of the game. She could feel the concoction of excitement and nervousness bubbling inside her.

She was ready.

So far, so good.

The girl was too busy ruffling through the stocks of shelving, boxes and minimal hardware, to have caught wind of him. The noise they were creating on their own was enough to cover up any sounds he made, although Kyran remained careful. He'd managed to slide out a tool from its holding area, resembling what looked to be a garden hoe, without being noticed. With that he touched the end of it to the back surface of one box on a shelf of among a pyramid of them.

He immediately caught Chop Susie's attention. That was good. He needed to get her out of the way, because she had a dangerous knife on her and he would need to neutralize that threat first. Then he could sack Ahab, football style and make a run for it. To Kyran's surprise, she had instead sent her partner over to do her bidding. She had already steadied her cleaver and stood back, in the way of a clean get-away.

Ahab approached and Kyran readied himself. When the other boy was in ideal position, Kyran jumped onto the rear of the old, rickety shelf, and with a good swing of his body weight, leg first, sent it tumbling, along with dozens upon dozens of its boxes. The pyramid basically came crashing down, collapsing into a disarray of boxes, shelving, and netting. The brunt mass of it consolidated directly upon his opposition and Kyran landed, gracefully, feet first onto the surface of, well, something.

For a second, Kyran was surprised, pretty proud and satisfied at himself that this actually worked and he hadn't injured himself in the process. It was like the moment a skater, much like himself, felt when landing that perfect trick in front of his friends while they were filming it and it felt sorta badass. He had to snap out of it, concentrate, because Chop Susie would surely be on his tail now.

Kyran, quickly lifted his two packs, strapping them against one shoulder, looking back for the hoe he had earlier. He caught sight of it, but in midst of it, caught a flash of orange or red peeking out from under his handy work. Was that, could it have been Jay groaning under there?

He shook the feeling, grabbing the garden hoe, as the girl brandished her own weapon, ready to keep her at a distance, out of reach. That's right.

Try.

Jay gave Saachi a nod as she directed him towards the shelf. He would’ve found her transparent bossiness more irritating if he wasn’t coming close to having to kill someone. Well, Saachi was going to do it anyway, he was just going to catch a bitch with a net.

He stepped up to the shelf, glancing around for their target. He stood there for a moment, and that was all Kyran needed.

The shelf toppled forwards, barely giving Jay enough warning to shield his face, and just like that the whole thing started crashing down on top of him. He tried to turn, run out the way, but there wasn’t nearly enough time. Within moments, he was pinned.

He yelled out, a lot of pain mixed with a lot of panic. He pushed outwards, felt some give, but not enough to get out.

He could at least breathe, but he was aching all over, and he was trapped.

Saachi jumped backward as soon as she saw the shelf toppling forwards, managing to narrowly dodge the falling debris. Skidding slightly, she whipped her head towards the direction of the intruder.

There her target was. The only thing between him and freedom was herself. This was it.

He'd managed to get himself a garden hoe and for a second, she thought it was his assigned weapon before she recognized two bags slung over his shoulder.

It was irrelevant. He wouldn't be able to reach that thing in time, not with the hoe in hand.

It almost felt like everything around her disappeared. All extraneous stimuli melting away as she zeroed in on Kyran. That was all that mattered in this moment.

As quickly as she could, Saachi launched herself. An attempt to catch him off-guard. Her meat cleaver was high in the air, ready to strike.

Once she was close, she saw Kyran thrusting the hoe at her. Thinking fast, she dodged to the right and tried using her momentum to swing her cleaver right at his face. She swung with all her might, adrenaline causing her heart to pump in her ears as she let out a guttural roar.

All she needed was one good strike.

A trickle of blood splattered onto the floor.

Through gritted teeth, Kyran felt the sting.

His upper cheek, bled a bit, tiny droplets forming around a few edges of the superficial nick.

Still, it bothered Kyran. All he'd wanted was to push her back, keep the distance between the two of them, knock her over. There was no way he'd be outrun by her. Somehow though, she had been able to reach over and carve into his face. A clean diagonal swipe.

It wasn't much, but any higher and he'd need an eye-patch for the remainder of his time. Any closer and he'd have a broken cheekbone.

On impulse, fueled by the bodily instinct of hurt and indignation, Kyran opted not to be so gentlemanly as this girl's partner was. His pushback was more focused, stronger now, as he zeroed in to her. The light near the entrance made it clear who Chop Susie really was. Dark skin, flowing black hair, Indian heritage. This was Saachi Nidal, he would have never thought she had it in her to be a killer.

Despite the thought, Kyran shoved the flat surface of the garden tool, into her center mass, forcing her to stumble backwards with no free will of her own, through the open entrance. Perhaps she had been too proud over the handy-work she'd done upon his cheek to keep up the concentration. A second time he shoved, with more power, causing Saachi to buckle. He was faster, more physically able. He flipped the garden tool over, onto the other end like a baseball bat and swung the wooden handle. Now back home, Kyran's position on the team was more of an outfielder, but right at the moment he felt like he'd made a home run once he felt that splintered crack.

He dropped the ho.

Saachi and tentatively, Jay, an assumption from the mere knowledge of seeing that flash of red-orange hair, had immediately introduced Kyran to the realities of this situation. They went along with it, just like those people who held their field trip hostage wanted. Probably a dozen more like them. There had to be others here, others who hadn't fallen into this trap of kill or be killed. He couldn't be the only one. He'd have to find them.

With that, he sprinted pass, jumping over Saachi's prone being, bags tucked between his arm and rib side to increase his speed. A wide-receiver with his ball, making his way to the endzone except the endzone was far beyond the horizon.

Yeah, this wasn't a game.

Jay couldn’t see a thing from within his bastille of boxes. He could hear the commotion of the fight, something sharp cutting, something else whacking, footsteps….

He yelled out again, shoving against the boxes some more as the situation unfolded without him. There was more give, but still not enough. Everything was happening feet away from him, and here he was trapped like some dumb bitch who got caught in a net.

He might’ve been glad for the free pass on having to do any dirty deeds, but now wasn’t the time for such navel gazing. He kept on struggling through gritted teeth, but it was a no go.

“Hey! Help, I’m stuck!”

It had only been for a second. She'd managed to land a blow. In her surprise, she had foolishly let her guard down. That was all he needed to get away. God, how could she be so stupid?

At the very least, Saachi ached. It was like being kicked by Jay all over again, only somehow worse. Having a hoe cracked against your side hurt like hell. Saachi took a while to get up, her body trying to resist her exerting any energy. She knew she needed to get up, however. She couldn't just lay on the floor. She had to move, had to do something.

Time to take stock of the situation. All in all, things could've gone better. Jay could've been more useful, but he did his job. If it wasn't for him, it'd be her stuck underneath all those boxes. That would've been bad. She honestly could've done better. She let her guard down while going for the kill. She couldn't do that in the future, no matter how hard it was. People weren't just going to keel over and die for her. Kyran, at the very least, proved that much.

Oh yeah, she probably should help Jay. He was screaming for help, after all.

"You okay down there?" Saachi asked, not really focusing on him as she started to chuck boxes out of the way. Kyran was going to be an annoying thorn in their side. She knew he wasn't dumb. He tended to be observant and quiet, though there was that incident where he stood up to Adonis. She had never had anything more than a cordial relationship with him, but now he was an enemy. Judging from the Adonis situation and his actions just now, he was certainly going to put up a strong fight.

At some point, Saachi had moved enough boxes to where Jay was able to get out by himself. She looked at her weapon. It still had some of Kyran's blood on it. She'd rather not get blood over all her things. Sitting down, she started to dig through her duffel bag and found the first aid kit. The first thing that jumped out at her was the presence of scissors. Another weapon? That was good to know. She eventually found the antiseptic wipes and started cleaning her blade while Jay finished extracting himself from the mess of boxes and tools.

"Kyran escaped. He managed to find a hoe to fend me back, but I got a good swipe at his face. We can't stay here, he's going to tell everyone he can what happened and that means no one will want to come near here. We have to find targets on the move."

In the end, they were prey. Things that got in her way. That's what she had to see them as to get through this game. She was brought up to be a winner. She was going to do everything in her power to survive. To win.

Saachi continued to clean her meat cleaver, trying to get at some particularly stubborn spots. Doing so helped focus her energy, keep her cool. Deal with Jay. She needed to stay calm in the situation.

"I'm ready to go when you are. Just give me the word."

Jay stared daggers at where he was pretty sure Saachi was in response to her snide remark. Well, at least she was helping.

Soon he was free, picking himself up out of the mess and licking his wounds. He’d have a few bruises and scrapes, but nothing broken or crushed. It hurt, but he’d been through worse.

“Kyran? Kyran Dean? That’s who it was?”

He frowned: he liked Kyran. Well, sort of, as much as you had to like someone who’s dad was signing those soccer scholarship letters. Still, there were worse guys than Kyran. Like that prick, Crowe, for instance.

He rubbed at his neck, avoiding eye contact with Saachi. Honestly, if he’d seen it was Kyran, he wasn’t sure he could start beating the shit out of him. Not just because he was a tough guy (and bigger than him, but Jay would never point that out), but just cause, you know.

He huffed. What a crappy start.

“Whatever. Let’s get going.”

Saachi kept on cleaning. It wasn't like there were any other Kyrans from their school, so it should be easy for Jay to put two and two together. She'd nearly finish cleaning the blade anyway, so it wasn't like he had to wait long for her.

Her family was probably watching this. How would they react to watching her? Would they be proud, disgusted, fearful? Her mother would probably be scared for her life, that much was obvious. Her father was a bit more of an enigma. He could think she was bringing shame onto the family for cracking so fast or be proud for doing what needed to be done.

What needed to be done.

In the end, this was all it was. People were already playing, so it was foolish for her to not play as well. Right now, she was being proactive. Doing the things that needed to be done eventually. She hoped her family could understand that. Understand that there was a reason behind her actions. She wasn't crazy. In fact, the others were probably crazy for thinking there was another way out. She knew better. She knew the rules of the game. Only one could be left standing.

Stowing her blade away, Saachi took out the map from her bag.

"We seem to be quite close to the center. Let's walk a bit and decide where to go from there."

It was probably irrelevant where they ended up. All they needed to find was prey. People they could pick off. Maybe scavenge some better weapons while they were at it. That way, she'd be closer to her end goal. The end goal, she assumed, for everyone else on the island.

With Jay close behind, Saachi made her way out of the warehouse. Saachi wasn't dead, even when she was at risk of it at the beginning due to Jay. In fact, she managed to form a partnership with him, even if it was unsteady. In the end, they lost Kyran, but she got a good hit on him. She was still alive, and in the end that was all that mattered.

Overall, she could've had a much worse start.
