Don't go into the Light

With only a single entrance, and the ability to keep watch from the top, the lighthouse seems a perfect place for a group to barricade themselves for safety. If, that is, they are sure they can trust one another...

He moved.

Noda wasn't sure why he moved--it seemed a stupid thing to do, really. He was still about ten feet away from her, they were facing each other head-on; she had been approaching the door to the lighthouse when she'd heard him, after all.

He moved forwards, lifted his stick. Close and closer he moved, and Satomi's face stayed calm, her eyes narrowed, but she didn't move. Lost in a fog of ridiculous, critical thoughts, she almost was taken out anyways.

Oh my God he's going to kill me.

"FUCK!" she yelled, and fired.

Alright, got this in the bag, just gotta get her in the head and-

"SHIT!" Shogo yelled, after realising that he'd horribly misjudged the distance.

Just as he had thought, the girl had a gun trained on him, which made his current position that much more problematic.

Come on, there's still ten feet between you and her, you can still get her before she can get a shot off.

Shogo went for another swing with the stick, hoping this time he'd be able to- BANG.

Collapsing to the ground, Shogo turned on his side and looked down at his shirt. Aside from all the mud and dirt it'd accumulated from travelling around the island, there was the unmistakable red stain of a gunshot wound to the chest.

"Ah, fuck." Shogo muttered. It was getting difficult to breathe, his breaths getting faster and shallower. Reaching into his pockets, he pulled out his pack of cigarettes. The pack was crushed, and Shogo threw it away.

The colour was starting to fade from everything, the dull browns and greens becoming washed out shades of gray, punctuated by the still bright objects like the blue of his shoes, or the red of his bloodstain.

Shogo coughed, feeling a crackling sensation all over his body. It suddenly hit him that he'd been shot in the lung. He didn't have much time left.

Shogo thought of telling the girl who'd shot him the way off the island, or the Basketball player who was running towards them, but he honestly didn't feel like it. More than anything, he felt like he'd outstayed his welcome on the island.

"G-Good... Luck... You Bastards." Shogo said. It was the last thing one of the students in the previous game said to him before he died. He felt it oddly fitting.

Shogo shut his eyes and tried to fall asleep.

Guess trying to win twice was a bit of a stretch just wish I could've known what she meant...

Oh.

Oh god, that was blood on his chest, wasn't it?

What had she meant to do, fire a warning shot? No, you didn't fire a warning shot at someone running to hit you, running to kill you. You took them down. You took them down so hard they couldn't get up and couldn't hurt you. You did that when you were free. You did that, especially, when everyone was out to kill you.

Not "No mercy", certainly. But perhaps, "Mercy only once."

"Good luck...you...b-bastards..."

She sighed, staring at Kawada's body. "Th-thanks," she managed, feeling ridiculous.

Thanks? Thanks for attacking me? Thanks for wishing me luck? Thanks for getting killed.

She was shaking, she realizing. Shaking violently, a leaf rattling in the wind, a bond all astir. Oh God I've killed someone.

It was only then she saw Mimura. Only then she was his rogueish, handsome features creased with worry, his eyes feverbright, sprinting towards them. At the sight of Shinji her ice would have cracked under any circumstance; now it broke.

"FREEZE YOU FUCK!" she screamed, and lifted her gun.

Mitsuko's plan was going perfectly: she was more than ready to stab Ryuhei in the back a few dozen times with her knife, then walk out that door with one less competitor on the island for her to kill. Sadly however, her plan unexpectedly hit a snag, thanks to Sasegawa's sensitive ears; from that close, she could easily see his eyes wondering to her knife, and the smile fell from her face.

Even her last ditch effort to stab Ryuhei then and there, as panic became clear in his face, was brought to a halt by a hard shove against her chest, forcing her onto the bed as he backed off in terror. Though she righted herself quickly, her victim had already started screaming at her, and before she had a chance to get up and finish her work he had turned tail and ran. Of course, she was between him and the door, so the only place he could be running was the wall. A dead end, or so Mitsuko thought.

Despite her hardened nature, she found her jaw dropping as Ryuhei dived head first out the window, yelling in pain the entire time. ”Jesus Christ, is he insane!?” she thought, too stunned to form the words in her throat. “What kind of crazy fucker jumps out a window like that?!”

Getting to her feet and walking over to the window, she watched him run off in the opposite direction, clutching his shoulder and cursing the whole way. She realised with disappointment as she regained her senses that another one had gotten away from her, even if he did have a bloody stump for an arm. Annoyed by her classmates ability to delay their inevitable deaths at her hands, she scowled with irritation as she watched the figure run off into the horizon.
He wouldn't get away from her though, not for long. First him, then Inada.

Only one survives.

Her fixation was broken by the echo of gunfire; it didn't take an expert to know it came from close by. Bringing herself back to reality, she quickly climbed carefully out the now cleared window, jumping down onto the ground below and quickly following the route Ryuhei took to get away, looking to the side to see three of her classmates, one lying face down on the ground. Whilst the situation showed promise, she was still unarmed, so she couldn't risk trying to kill someone with a gun.

Not yet, at least.

A hundred yards or so. Shinji could cover that distance in less than twenty seconds. His feet pounded as he ran, step-by-step just pushing forward to try to make a difference. The seconds seemed to drag out, as his legs pumped to push him toward-

-a gunshot. The loud bang of a discharging firearm was a sound that Shinji had gotten familiar with from recent events. The sound jolted him out of his running trance and he focused on the tableau before him. The tall man, now recognizable as Kawada, fell to the ground.

He was too late.

Shinji’s attention snapped to the girl. The shooter. The killer. She was pointing the gun at him and yelling something incomprehensible. Stoic Satomi, who was not so stoic when shown some love, pointing at him with a gun…

It brought him focusing back on reality. Shinji ground himself to a halt, a few meters away from Satomi. “Satomi…” he sputtered, glancing over at the fallen body of Kawada. There was a weak cough, and Shinji could tell from the bloodstain on the shirt that he was as good as dead. “It’s okay Satomi,” he said to her trying to keep the adrenaline from hardening the words. He needed to be reassuring, at least to not get himself shot, so he could calm the girl down.

“I’m not going to hurt you.”

She had been calm, before.

Not completely, of course--to be completely calm in her situation would be downright peculiar. But she had had enough presence of mind left to keep from flipping her shit. Killing Kawada had pushed her to the edge; had made her feel weak and empty, devoid of her personality. Her self-control had weakened.

Now it was gone.

"I'm not going to hurt you."

"Mimura," she growled, thanking God her eyes were free of tears. A wild upswell of anger was coursing out from her stomach, making her feel light and powerful, and she embraced it. "You're not going to hurt me? You're not going to hurt me?" She laughed, a brittle, fragile sound. "You expect me to believe that?"

Her thoughts of finding Mimura and following him along--thoughts of learning his plan, of what he might be up to--were gone. She had forgotten her high assessment of Mimura's intelligence, her reliance on his skill for any hope of escaping the island. She had just killed someone, and Mimura's appearance--the greatest trauma of Noda' life--was too much to add on top of that.

"You-you..." she sputtered. "You used me. I told you I loved you and you...you..." She shut her eyes. "Not even so much as a by your leave, Mimura!" she cried. "Couldn't even be troubled to call to and tell me it meant nothing?"

He hadn’t been expecting this. Sure, Shinji knew that the cold and distant Satomi could have a softer and more vulnerable side; he hadn’t expected her to be showing it now. He threw a glance over to the fallen body of Kawada. She had just shot him not two minutes ago; maybe she was just feeling the consequences of having killed someone. If he could just calm her down, she might be able to help him figure out a way out of this whole mess of an island.

“Satomi-” Shinji was about to continue talking, but the speakers nearby crackled to life, carrying again that terrible and sadistic voice. He breathed a small sigh of relief as the recent kills were named. If the killings had decreased in the past while, it was possible some of the players had gotten their comeuppance.

Then the danger zones were named, and Shinji could feel the blood freeze in his veins. C10. That was the lighthouse, where he was standing right now. There wouldn’t be much time to get away. They’d need to be moving now.

“Satomi, we need to get away quickly,” Shinji said, turning away from her toward Kawada’s fallen backpack. He checked it to see how much food and water it still had, and then slung the extra pack over his shoulder. “We can save this talk for later. Let’s focus on survival first.” Shinji never looked back at her as he checked Kawada’s pockets for any other useful equipment. It wasn’t particularly respectful, but the living were more important than the dead. Finding nothing of use, he stood up and said, “Follow me. There’s a building not too far from here that’s still safe.”

He took off at a light jog heading southwest, never looking back toward Satomi. Shinji couldn’t bear to look back at Satomi as he ran. He couldn’t bear to accept that he had been responsible for one girl’s descent into killing. Maybe later, he could try to fix all the damage he’d done to Satomi. But for now, they needed to live.

He ran.

He left his back completely open. Almost without thinking she trained her sights on him; her lips thinned to a pale line, her eyes narrowed, her hand trembled. End him. She couldn't let him get away. Couldn't let him hurt anyone else. Couldn't let him...

Couldn't let him...

Her gun dropped, and she sank to her knees.

Her lips and hands trembled, and the gun wilted to her side. She was dimly aware of a loud beeping coming from somewhere nearby, but she ignored it completely. It was dim background noise

(beep...beep...)

to the rushing of her thoughts.

Because her her control, she'd been a great actress--she could play any emotion, because her own feelings didn't get in the way. Someone had once said to her that all actors were warm people, but that wasn't so; in order to truly convey an emotion or a personality, one had to be able to divorce one's psyche from one's actions.

But could someone do that? Could anyone do that? Mimura tried, she

(beep..beep..beep

thought; tried harder than her, maybe. Always the same, Mimura, no matter what he was doing. And yet just then--at the moment she'd threatened him, at the moment she'd been ready to shoot him--he had shown his back to her. He had given her opportunity. He had trusted that she wouldn't

(beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep))

What is that...

Oh.

"MIMURA!" she shouted, and then without a second thought she pulled off her glasses and smiled at him. "I'm sorry!"

Beepbeepbeepbeepbeepbeepbeepbeepbeepbeepbeep.

Oh, Lord. I never stopped loving him.

She smiled.

BANG
