A Place to Rest

((Mitsuko Souma continued from Don't go into the Light))

Mitsuko eventually stopped running, leaning against the trees as she caught her breath. She had been for a good while now, pushed from a gentle walk by the calamity of noise going on on the island around her. She wasn't scared, really, but she didn't want to get caught in the crossfire if they moved her way.

She hadn't been scared in a long time.

Slowly, she slid down the tree and stopped to catch her breath. For the longest while, she had been going on adrenaline, kept awake and energetic by the Program. But now she was starting to run out of adrenaline, and she was starting to wear out. She'd been running all day, and hadn't found anywhere she could stop to get some shut-eye.

“I'll rest, just for a second..” she thought to herself, sitting on the ground with her back to the wood, her daypack lying next to her. She breathed in and out deeply, her chest rising and falling rhythmatically, as she thought back to the day behind her.

It had been so long since it all started, she realised: waking up in the classroom; climbing that mountain peak for no reason at all; running into the fuckin' loony Mizuho; almost getting to shank that bitch Ryuhei, all that in the past twenty four hours. From the announcements that'd been going on, it was clear that people had finally gotten the hint about where the fuck they were: loads of people had died so far, and she guessed there couldn't be that many left. There was still probably a way to go, but most of the work had been done for her, by the looks of things.

Her mouth dry and raspy, she realised that she hadn't eaten anything in the entire time either. Tired, she leaned over her bag and unzipped it, pulling out the dry bread and taking a huge bite. It was tasteless and unpleasant, but it felt good to have food in her mouth. After a few moments of eating, she turned to her water bottle and started downing it; fuck was she thirsty.

Her stomach a little fuller, she closed her daypack once again and reached down her back, pulling out the switchblade from her g-string. Idly, she opened it up, examining the sharp, clean blade. She wondered how long it would be before it'd become stained red.

Clutching it in her hands, she continued sitting there, her eyes growing heavy. She was actually really tired right now, she realised, as she started to look around the dark woods. Everyone else was probably asleep, her worn out brain reasoned, so perhaps she'd be safe to just have a little nap.

It may have been a security risk, but Mitsuko didn't have time to ponder it: her eyes started to drift shut.

((Yumiko continued from Count On Me))

Come on, push it, push it...

Yumiko was no athlete and the amount of stitches in her chest were making that fact abundantly clear. Yukiko and her, they'd spent a lot of time on more domestic hobbies, nothing particularly sporting. Back before all of this... back when Yukiko was alive - damn, everyone was alive and concerns were little more pressing than grades, what guys you might like... not things like 'If I don't run fast enough, my classmate might die'

Gasping for breath, Yumiko in her exhaustion caught her feet on something - probably a tree root or something - she wasn't exactly in position to say as she went head over heels and landed with a cry in a heep.

Taking rapid lungfuls of air, half due to being winded and half pure pain, tears pricking at the corners of her eyes, Yumiko got to her knees, then her feet.

I have to keep moving, fight past it Yumiko...

Mitsuko had almost fallen asleep at that point, her eyes just about shut. However, she snapped out of her tired state the moment Yumiko let out a cry behind her, although of course Mitsuko had no idea it was her: she just heard someone making noises very close to where she was.

“Shit! Bitch snuck up on me!” she panicked, unprepared for an encounter so soon after her rest was brought to a halt. She looked around, her heart beating fast with anxiety, until she quickly realised that the noises were coming from behind her, where the tree would thankfully be between her and her target. ”Ok, play it cool Mitsu.”

Still sleepy, but adrenaline moving through her veins once more, she slowly poked her head out as subtly as she could from behind the tree, not considering whether or not she'd get seen first. Thankfully for her, the girl causing the noise, that lanky chick Yumiko, was too busy getting up from the floor to see her face looking straight at her.

A grin spread across Mitsuko's face as she pulled her head back behind the tree. Slowly, she got up to her feet, clutching the knife in her hand with eager anticipation. Yumiko was nothing special, she laughed; she could take her out easily!

Pausing for a brief second to catch herself in the moment, Mitsuko leapt out from behind the tree full force, smiling at Yumiko whilst baring the knife in her hand at full display.

Keep going, keep going ke-HOLYSH-

Yumiko did everything she possibly could to stop herself from running straight into Mitsuko Souma, who'd leaped out from behind a tree like a diabolical jack-in-the-box, but ended up colliding with her, staggering backwards.

She wasn't surprised, although a little guilty, to find herself immediately scrabbling for her gun.

“Argh, Bitch!” Mitsuko yelled out as Yumiko ran into her, knocking her off balance and taking the smile off her face. Clutching her hand to her head, which had banged against Yumiko quite hard, she glared angrily at her foe. To her great annoyance, she saw that she was fumbling around at her waist for her gun.

“Oh, don't even try it!” she snarled, marching over towards the girl and clenching her blade tightly in her hand. Pushing her arm away hard, she brought her hand up to grab hold of Yumiko's front, pulling her towards her with rage fuelled strength.

Looking into her eyes, a smile popped back on her face, so fast that it was like a switch had been pulled in her head. Now that she was back in charge, the knife gripped tightly and ready, she looked at Yumiko with excitement and pleasure: she finally had someone at her mercy! Yumiko wasn't going to run away, not like that bitch Ryuhei!

“Time to die Yumiko!” she grinned, raising the knife high above her head. Silently mouthing 'bye-bye', she brought the weapon down brutally hard and mercilessly fast, straight at Yumiko's terrified left eye.

A moment's hesitation cost Yumiko everything.

Whilst Mitsuko grabbed hold of her and pulled her forwards, she'd already managed to fumble her gun out of its holster. They were face to face, and Yumiko had her pistol pointed straight at Mitsuko's stomach. It was practically point blank range. Her finger hovered on the trigger, and didn't pull it. She couldn't bring herself to.

It's wrong, it's always wrong even wh-NO THINK OF YUICHIRO THINK OF YUICHIRO YOU IDIO-

"AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!"

Yumiko pulled the trigger but by that time the gun was pointed at Mitsuko's feet and a shot was never going to be fatal. However, Yumiko didn't have time to worry about that, or much of anything else really. She had several inches of steel buried in her skull.

She pitched over backwards.

Mitsuko grinned mercilessly, as Yumiko's ear piercing scream filled the air and the bullet flew harmlessly between her feet, the sound of the gunshot and the ensuing ringing not drowning out her terrified cries. In an instant, her cry had ended, and her body slid lifelessly out from under her knife, collapsing in a heap on the floor.

Another sound was filling the air now: the sound of Mitsuko Souma's terrible laughter. She had finally done it, she had finally killed someone! She was one step closer to winning this game, and going home! Merrily, she kicked Yumiko's corpse with her foot, jumping over to her side and picking up her gun, holding it as a victory trophy, giggling all the way with excitement. She stared down at the eyes of her victim, recalling her agonised shriek of demise.

She had cried out; she had been terrified! She'd done that to her, she'd made her terrified! She'd instilled that fear as she murdered her heartlessly! One second she had been alive, the next she was dead! She'd done that to her! Her cold, empty eye was lying there! Dead!

Dead!

Dead!

Dead!

Dead!

Dead!

Dead.

Dead.

Dead...

“Yumiko?”

Her empty eye gave no response, her mouth frozen in the scream she'd let out as she died. Blood had stained her once clear face, as she lay there perfectly still. She wasn't replying to Mitsuko, because she was dead. And Mitsuko had done that.

“Yu-yumiko?” she asked again dumbly, looking down at the corpse of the girl, clutching the murder weapon in one hand and the prize in the other. She had killed her. Just like she wanted to. She was one step closer to winning. She had done that, because she'd killed her.

Only one survives.

She had to do it, didn't she? She wanted to do it, and she got what she wanted! She had to work to get what she wanted, because you couldn't trust anyone to help you, but she always got what she wanted. She was smart like that; she was resourceful; she was Hardcore Souma. She did some things that people looked down at, but it got her what she wanted. This was just another one of those things that would earn her looks. More couldn't hurt, she had enough of those.

Only one survives.

Besides, she wasn't the only one on the island doing it! People were dying, and she sure as hell wasn't slitting their throats! She was trying to, but this was her first kill! She had to do it, and she had done it damn well! She was a perfect little angel of death! The perfect little girl!

Only one survives.

And who cares if she had to do it again?! It's not like everyone had only killed one person!only one survivesShe would finish off the others on the island, and then she'd get to go home! She'd find some motel to spend the night at, working the money out of anyone who needed touching! She would live, and she'd be the winner of the game!only one survivesShe would have won!

Yumiko didn't move. She was still dead.

And it wasn't even like this was the first time she'd killed someone! This was the first time she'd done it herself, yeah, but she'd killed that bastard _____, and that mother of hers who watched and let it happen! She'd killed that guy who was gonna kill her, heard the news reports of his car wrecked on the cliff bed! She'd done what she'd done!only one survivesThis time was no different!

“Yeah! Yumiko! You had to die, didn't you!” Speaking to the corpse was strangely hard. “This wouldn't have happened if you'd stayed where you were! You should've just laid down and died! Instead you ran into me! You screwed yourself over, bitch!” Speaking was really hard right now, but she wasn't sure why. The bitch had brought it on herself, trying to run right at her!only one survivesThis wouldn't have happened if she'd offed herself at a start! She had a gun, Mitsuko remembered as she looked at the weapon in her left hand, nodding vigorously; she could've blown her brains out the second this game started! It would've saved them all some trouble!

“Maybe I'll do it for you now!” she laughed, pointing the gun shakily at her blood soaked head. Her finger feel loosely around the trigger, her face grinning as she looked down at the dead corpse “I'll blow your head off, and do what you never had the guts to!” Still cackling, she fired the gun at the head, the pistol whipping itself hard against her hand and the gunshot causing her ears to ring once more. She fired over and over, few of the bullets hitting their target, as the few that did hit demolished what was left of Yumiko's face. Even as she ran out of rounds, she continued pulling the trigger, still laughing the entire time. Eventually, she stopped, and dived onto her knees next to the corpse.

“See?! That's how you do it, Yumiko! That's how you off yourself and save yourself the trouble! I did what you couldn't, bitch!” Standing up, she gave the body a few more hard kicks, as if she wasn't satisfied that she was dead enough.

Only one survives.

Eyeing it up with savage delight, she moved over to the daypack slumped by her side, rooting through it for all her supplies whilst grinning with triumph: the gun wasn't her only trophy; she'd get to have her things too! Her food, her water, she piled it all out of the bag and tossed it aside. She collected her compass and map too, and grabbed the bullets with the excitement of a child on Christmas. After she'd completely emptied the bag, she jammed everything into her own as tightly as it would fit, and kicked the empty daypack sharply.

“Yumiko, hope you don't mind if I take your stuff!” she laughed once again, looking at the empty, demolished face. “And if you do, what do I care?! What're you gonna do about it without a face and a gun and an eye?!” She laughed some more, as she looked around. “People might get an idea to come here, because I did what you couldn't and shot your face full of lead! I better be off, Yumiko! Say hi to the rats when they come coming!”

Laughing, she ran off in the other direction, a fresh supply of adrenaline carrying her legs. She had done it, she had finally killed someone! She had killed Yumiko, and she'd done such a great job of it too! She was daddy’s little angel of death! She was Hardcore Souma! She was the best damn killer on the entire island! She was a monster! A monster! A monster!

She ran away from the corpse of her first victim.
