call the police
An electronic crackle rang out through the pitch-black hallways of the recesses.
"Hello again, everyone," spoke the voice of the owl-masked woman. "It is once more time to lay out the previous day's fatalities in our second official announcement. We have many new names to go over, both of the dead and the living. Watch your necks, kiddos, because we had a lot of fatal neck trauma that occurred yesterday, and not from the collars this time. Mostly, at least. To start with, Daryl- er, David Penders was killed when his neck was torn open by our local werebat, Mei-ling Chou. Or at least, let's hope that's when he died, lest he was still alive while being mauled and eaten. Continuing on with our neck-biting and cannibalism hot streak, Anatoly Orlovsky embraced his vampiric nature and drank Selene Flores dry. Good job on that one kid, now you're a real fucking vampire. After that, we had another three incidents involving your classmate's necks getting pulverized. To start, Tamara Jeung's neck met the business end of our collars after he tumbled out of bounds. Just after that, Crispin-Kelley Cuyler killed Andrew Martin by crushing his neck to dust. Lastly, Isabella Lugosi had her own neck broken by Ana Ford's mercury-like parasite, bringing her reign of terror to a close, though it took a surprisingly long time for her to actually die from it. We're sure she suffered. That brings the neck trauma streak to an end, but there were still a few more deaths after that. As you might have heard, the late August Hanlon violently detonated via his own Gift, taking Leila Merin with him in the explosion. Not long after, the ceiling collapsed above Kennedy Jackson's head, crushing her into paste. We considered crediting the latter to the late August, but decided that since it would likely be ruled an accident in a court of law, we're going to give that one to God. That's all for yesterday's deaths. It's time to announce our next danger zone. This time it's going to be The Old Road that's off limits, in addition to The Roughlands from yesterday. We hope you all are nice and cozy, because the space we're letting you all play around in is only gonna get smaller from here. That brings us again to the winner of our Most Kill Award! This time we had another multi-way tie. We deliberated on who to give the prize to for some time, but ultimately decided to award it to Mei-ling Chou. Not only was her kill particularly enjoyable to witness, but more importantly she was the first one to get one yesterday. You'll find your prize out on The Old Road, Mei-ling, and like Mercedes before you, you'll have until noon to claim it. There won't be a flag this time, but if you follow the road long enough, you're sure to find it. Thanks for listening, kiddos! You've got three days left to be the last one standing, so don't stop now!"
A second crackle.
A brief silence.
(("So, you're giving weapons only to the people you know already don't need weapons." Astrid's voice said from somewhere within the darkness.))

[[Ana Ford continued from And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope]]
After nearly falling to her death Ana had limped back inside the compound and decided it was safer to take refuge underground to rest. Her shoulder throbbed and while she had relocated it, it was still extremely painful to move. Its range of motion had also been reduced with it feeling like someone had tied it up with rope, so she kept it pulled in tight to the front of her body. Despite that, and her other injuries, she had found an abandoned corner to huddle in and had draped her bomber over her body while she slept. Occasionally being woken up by a spike of pain from her shoulder whenever she shifted in her sleep.
She didn't know what time she had fallen asleep or what time she had woken but her eyes were finally dry when she opened them. August blowing himself up had been shocking but Ana also struggled to comprehend how destructive his power had truly been. He'd destroyed an entire corner of the building and nearly taken her with it. She shuddered unconsciously, hissing in pain as her shoulder was jostled by the movement. It was clear to her how much he had been holding back when they had encountered Isabella.
As she sat in the corner of the room Ana began to hear the noises of someone else moving around. The parasite heard it too and rose up like a snake to scan their immediate surroundings. With a pained grunt, Ana used her one good arm to leverage herself back to her feet using the wall and then set about retrieving her flashlight from her bag. When she withdrew it however Ana found that it didn't immediately turn on when she pressed the button.
"Come on," She quietly whined as she shook the device a few times and then slapped it into the wall, causing the light to finally flicker on. The parasite watched her actions with great interest before taking up its familiar position on her shoulder. Ana placed her hand in front of the flashlight's beam to soften it somewhat and swung it around her nearby surroundings. After failing to immediately see any sign of anyone but still hearing movement she felt a panic start to build in her gut.
Licking her lips first, Ana spoke out into the darkness.
"Hello?" She asked, keeping her voice lower than normal. "Who's out there?"

Licking her lips first, Ana spoke out into the darkness.
"Hello?" She asked, keeping her voice lower than normal. "Who's out there?"
There was no reply to her question. The area had instead become quieter, all sound vanishing as it was consumed by the darkness. Ana slowly ran the flashlight over her immediate surroundings two more times, scanning back and forth looking for any telltale sign of the life she had recently heard.
She doubted whoever was making the noise had gone far. There was no way she wouldn't have heard their hurried footsteps or stomping run if they had tried to flee. But she couldn't see anyone in the room with her. All the beam of the flashlight picked up were motes of dust lazily floating through the air. It also succeeded in casting long, distended shadows of the wooden structures that made up an obstacle course. But that didn't help her either.
The light settled on the open doorway, dimly illuminating a small slice of the corridor beyond. Taking a deep breath before she started moving Ana began limping towards the doorway. As she did so she called out again.
"Hey, I know you're there." She said, trying to imbue her voice with any amount of authority she could possibly muster. "I just heard you."
Upon reaching the doorway Ana stopped and used the frame for support, leaning her left side on it and gently swung the flashlight up and down the corridor, looking for any sign of the presence she knew she had heard. As she looked out she sent the parasite down and onto her ankle, instructing it to spread out across as much of the floor as it could. If anyone was trying to sneak around she hoped they'd step on it so it could tell her or trip them.
"Come out or say something."

From deeper within the room, the brief sound of something sharp scraping along a concrete wall.
Ana jolted at the sudden noise piercing the silence. It had emanated from the room across the corridor to her. The doorway sat open, a yawning portal to more darkness. She didn’t know exactly what she had heard but something had scraped along one of the concrete walls.
The parasite had also jumped and retreated behind her back. It necessitated her reinforcing her control and sending it out ahead of her own steps again.
Slowly, Ana limped across the width of the corridor. It was only around five or six steps but her progress was slowed by her injuries and her nerves. Her right arm was still pinned tight to her body, the throbbing pain in her shoulder a constant background detail.
Upon reaching the doorway Ana took a deep shaky breath in before stepping over the threshold. As soon as she did so the flashlight flickered and went out.
“Shit!” She hissed, shaking the flashlight to try and bring it back to life. When that didn’t work she began smacking it on her thigh. A weak flicker of light tried to fight through the darkness but quickly lost the battle.
“Come on, come on.” She pleaded as she continued to try and make the flashlight work.

"It's safer if it stays off." A voice, about twenty feet away, said within the shadows enveloping Ana.
At the sudden sound of the voice Ana yelped in surprise and reacted on instinct. That instinct was tossing the flashlight up into the air, where the parasite caught it and slingshotted it across the room in the direction the noise had come from.
It was only after the flashlight had begun its flight that she realized what she had done and that she needed it to see.
Luckily, it appeared the sudden jostling caused as a result of being flung by a living blob of mercury had sorted out the connection and the light finally came back on as it continued to fly through the darkness with force.

The flashlight spun through the air, briefly illuminating Astrid's upper half before it collided with her chest.
Whumph.
Clang.
The light clattered to the ground, rolling behind a crate. The beam pointed sideways at a wall.
CLACKCLACKCLACK
Astrid snatched the flashlight off the ground.
She pointed it up at her own face from below her chin.

Great. This fucking shithole again. It was too dark to see anything, and there was only one place where it could be that dark. Why couldn't he end up anywhere else? Not like there was a nice place to be in their little fucked-up prison, but still.
This was... that girl. She'd been there when Jenelle...
...
Christ, he had to get out of here.
... wait, was this...
"Ana?"

"Ana?"
The flashlight struck the chest of a girl and clattered to the floor. Ana heard the shuffling moving and the sound of boots on the concrete then the girl shone the beam under her face, it was almost like she was about to tell a scary story. Ana could see the deep black orbs that she had for eyes and the light reflecting off the shard of glass she held. Ana didn't like the girl. In fact, she was starting to realize that she didn't like many of her classmates at all.
Still, she gulped seeing the image, although she was only allowed to see it for a moment. As Astrid quickly strode over to a crate and smashed the flashlights lense plunging them back into darkness. As soon as their visibility was reduced back to nothing, Ana used her newly free hand to pull out her own glass shard. She didn't want to have a knife fight in the dark but she also had no idea what the other girls' intentions were. So she had to be prepared for the worst, especially as she only had one working arm.
Feeling the uneasy sense of eyes on her Ana took some quick shuffling steps to her left and felt out a wall with the back of her palm. Once she made contact with it she crouched down slightly in an effort to lower her profile in case the girl with the goth eyes had night vision or something similar. As she did so she heard a familiar voice.
"Huh? Austin?" She whispered, whipping her around to look for him. "Where are you?"

"I, uh, kinda am you right now. Sorta."
Ana didn't know how his Gift worked, it seemed. And why would she, given that they'd barely even known each other before now? It was kind of a hard thing to explain, too, though it's not like they really had the time. Especially not with the weird girl standing in the dark threatening to kill herself. He didn't trust that her little freak out over there wasn't gonna boil over into her stabbing Ana or something.
"Hold on. Gotta defuse this shit."
He was certain he was the right man for such a delicate job.
"She ain't gonna fucking kill you, calm down."
