By the time Steve tried to comfort her and Crispin squeezed in the car, Claudia had already lost consciousness. She was simply along for the ride, now.

“Claudia?”
Stephen pressed two fingers to her neck.
“She still has a pulse. It’s… not looking good, though. We should go now.”

"No crashing. Noted, baby girl," Ximena said pointing at Astrid.
"No touching dead bodies. Noted," she said, pointing to Cecilia.
She poked her head out the window in time to see a bag of cameras go sky high.
"Cameras, chucked," she said as Crispin came back around and squeezed in. She adjusted the rearview mirror, getting a look at the folks in the back. She locked eyes with Alan briefly, then looked at the others. Crispin's face was all fucked up, and Ximena still wouldn't say that she liked the guy, but if she was honest deep down in her heart... the tail was pretty cute. Looked fluffy.
"Seatbelts for those that got'em," she said, turning the key in the ignition.
Stephen mentioned Emily and for a split second she faltered.
Emily.
But there wasn't time. Claudia was fading fast.
She wound the radio dial way up.
I don't wanna waste my time
Become another casualty of society
I'll never fall in line
Become another victim of your conformity and back down
Ximena smashed her foot against the gas pedal and the car screeched, peeling away at high speed.
In the rearview mirror, the compound became smaller and smaller and smaller, until it looked like a toy and then, eventually, disappeared.

Crispin got a good look at the rear view mirror. He leaned back in his seat, sighed. The bandages still hid *most* of the damage, but he'd seen enough. Unconsciously, he found himself wrapped up in his own tail. The second he realized it, he almost instantly began uncoiling, didn't want to look weak, before he realized that fuck it, didn't matter. He didn't have to prove shit anymore. Everyone here's been through shit, they'd probably understand, if they were lucky enough not to, then fuck it, it weren't for them to get.
The car began to move. They were free. Fucked up as he were physically, he was still alive. It wasn't just him neither, so that had to count for something.
It all hurt though, too. Even when they were gone, they'd probably never really leave this place. Even then, there's a lot of people who never got that chance in the first place. Moose, Jenelle, Gary. They weren't coming home. Lot of others too. Gonna have a lot of reminders of this shit back home, even from something like looking in the mirror. Talking to people. Sand. Hell, he didn't even want to think about that far ahead. It scared him a bit.
Fuck it, wasn't like he thought about his future before or during this shitstorm anyways. He'll handle it, probably. The bastards that put them all here lost, the stupid fuckers that tried to kill him lost; he'd live. It's easier than he'd figure it'd be. At least now he had more than spite keeping him going.
Crispin just stared at the asphalt speeding on by. He pressed his tail between his head and the window and rested against it. This was all too much thinking anyways. Shit made him tired. More tired than he'd ever been. He closed his eye.

Catche thinks my squirrel is Fisk so here's my daily reminder that he is not.
((As the compound started to move away, Astrid hugged her arms even closer to her chest. She remained expressionless and facing forward. Her head slumped down a little bit again.))

This was it, then. They were getting out of here. For good. They were still leaving three people behind, but they'd probably heard the man's announcement and started making their own way out of here. They could always come back for them, Stephen concluded. At least the car beat walking. Ximena had, according to her, stolen it from the furries themselves. There had been some tied up guy in there, and she'd kicked him out next to an RV. It was probably long gone by now, but it was still chilling to think that she'd been so close to where the furries were.
Staring out of the window, a lot of thoughts rushed through his mind.
Regrets that they couldn't get more people out of here. He'd never listen to Yvette complaining about her Gift again. He'd never tune in to one of Sayuna's streams and listen to it while he did his homework again. He'd never crack jokes with Austin and game while Jenelle yelled at him in the background again. That was all gone, lost to the furries and this stupid fucking game.
Hope, that Claudia would make it. He'd already lost so many friends. If he could save her, then he'd do everything he could to make sure she lived. Stephen wasn't sure that she would make it, but he wasn't going to just leave her to die like all the other people coming out of the building had.
Deep down, some anger. Astrid and Crispin had killed more people than nearly anyone else in this game. It wasn't fair that they got to go home. Not when so many good people had died. He'd easily swap Yvette and Sayuna for the two of them. But it wasn't like that. In a way, they were victims of this whole thing too. Even if that was hard to see.
But most of all, one thought dominated his mind.
"I fucking hate sand."

Alan sighed as the car started up, letting his head fall to the back of the seat. He considered that he should say something or make some final observation, but that still felt premature. Alan instead took a few slow, steady breaths.
((He’d save any further words for when they’d truly gotten clear of this place.))
