Go for Broke

open

Two floors down from the primary deck of the cruise ship, another terrace of deck just out, primarily given over to a massive swimming pool. This pool is full of clean, fresh water, and arrayed around it are a wide range of beach towels, pool chairs, and water toys—the latter including dozens of pool noodles and boogie boards, as well as a pair of inflatable pool toys (one yellow duck and one green alligator), each large enough for a grown adult to ride. Back next to the entrance to the corridors is a small stand that sold ice cream; though it has been emptied of sweet treats it provides better cover than anything else in the immediate vicinity.

Luanne reached her hand into the bag, and quickly took out an old leather-bound captain's log, which she assumed was what Pippi had meant when she'd mentioned her notebook, since the producers didn't let people keep their notebooks from home. She placed it on the chair beside her. Then she looked down at the water-soaked Supreme shirt that she was wearing.

She turned her head to the side, looking straight at a camera stuck on a pole-mounted lighting fixture a few feet to her left.

She arched her back inwards, unnaturally contorting herself. Then she held her mouth half-open, and gazed lazily into the camera with her eyes all red from spending pretty much all her time here crying. Her arms stretched themselves out towards the camera, making a rectangular frame out of her fingers.

She made a clicking sound with her tongue against her teeth, imitating a camera shutter.

"Photo by Terry Richardson," she stated.

She shut her eyes tight for a few seconds, clenching her jaw.

Then she looked away, reached down into the bag again, and pulled out Pippi's towel. Quickly, she draped it around her shoulders.

She heard another shotgun blast.

...

She grabbed the captain's log and opened it up.

From the other room, there was a blood-curdling scream. And then there was another.

Luanne was trying so hard not to have a panic attack that she was going to give herself a panic attack.

She felt like she was reading Latin. She couldn't freaking focus. There were people dying in the next room over. She couldn't freaking do this. All the words and drawings were blending together. Pippi deserved someone better than her. Everybody was watching. She was going to barf. She didn't want to die. She didn't want a life of suffering. She didn't want a life of luxury. She just wanted to be. She didn't want to feel alone. She didn't want to feel like people were just tolerating her. She didn't want to die. All it would take was a bullet going through the wall. All it would take was someone rounding the corner. There were things in this book that weren't hers to read. She couldn't read those parts. She couldn't - god, just, fuck, it was too hard.

She collapsed forwards with her head buried in her hands.

...

...

Just try. Just do your best.

Forget your past.

This is your last chance now.

Okay.

She stood up, and flipped the chair on its side, so that it could be used as cover from the eyes of anyone at the pool's entrance. Then, she hid Pippi's backpack behind the chair, and dropped the rest of her stuff - her own backpack, her towel, Pippi's notebook, the crab stick, et cetera - next to it. And then she stepped to the edge of the pool.

She inched herself forwards.

She stared down into the water.

Her lip shook.

She dropped herself in. And she let herself sink to the bottom.

There was a camera in the corner of the pool. Currently, it was focused on two boys at the bottom. One, with dark hair and a hoodie, was zip-tied to some kind of luggage cart thing. His eyes were open, and he was screaming. He had the other boy, a clean-cut popular-looking jock, in a chokehold. They'd been like that for around an hour or so. They looked alive, except they also didn't.

The camera caught a sudden flash of white-bubbled downwards movement shooting down into the pool, from the area around where the two boys were. The camera jerkily shifted its focus. After a few seconds, the bubbles cleared. It was a girl, wearing a Supreme-brand t-shirt over a sleeveless white blouse, a pair of dark brown capris, and black loafers. On her right wrist, she was wearing an amber-beaded bracelet, and she had a pink bandana tied tight around her neck. She sank down all the way near to the bottom, and then, floating on her stomach in the water column, she stared at the screaming boy's face. She continued staring for a few seconds or so. Then she reached her hand out, passed it over his face, and closed his eyes. After that, she pushed her palm against his chin, and closed his mouth.

She stayed still for a few moments, and then glanced at the camera. She looked surprised. She looked away. And then back at the camera. And then at the two boys. And then back at the camera again, now with no obvious expression on her face.

Then she swam towards the camera. She floated in front of it, and stared inside.

She tapped on the glass. Then she swam up, out of the camera's view.

She dropped back down, and swam over to the luggage cart. Holding something shiny, she fumbled at the wrist of the boy tied to the luggage cart. The wrist he was tied to the thing by. Then, she moved behind him and the other boy, and wrenched his hold around the other boy's neck free. Finally, she swam back to the surface.

She dropped down one last time, and swam behind the boy who she had just cut free from the luggage cart. She planted her feet against the ground, and grabbed him by his shirt collar. Then, she yanked him backwards, and most of the way out from under the jock boy. After that, she hooked her arms around him from behind, and pulled him vaguely upright. Then, she kicked against the ground, and tried to swim upwards, struggling to drag him to the surface.

Eventually they made it there, though!

After a deleted-for-time scene of attempting to iteratively pull and flop the boy up onto the pool deck, Luanne eventually got him up on dry land. Then, she wrapped herself in her towel again, and curled up behind the upturned pool chair. Then, she grabbed Pippi's notebook, and looked inside.

((For real, this time.))
