Astrid cried herself to sleep that night, because she wanted to make eyes across the room at Ximena. She wanted her to know that she couldn't stop looking at her. She wanted to communicate it to her without having to explain it with words, because she couldn't explain it with words. She just didn't know how. She didn't know how to articulate that kind of stuff. She wanted to show, not tell. Telling was something that really really got her social anxiety going. Way too scary.
She was so alone.
Nobody could ever look her in the eyes and know it. They were like an invisible wall that only she noticed was an obstacle, separating her and the rest of humanity.

She sometimes caught herself wondering about how life could have gone if her frontal lobe injury was caught by doctors when she was 11 months old instead of 18 years. She wondered about who she would be now, if when she was a little kid, adults had actually understood that when she suddenly swung from outwardly emotionless to sobbing and throwing things, that she wasn't just another spoiled brat throwing a tantrum, that she wasn't doing it for attention, that she wasn't choosing to be difficult. She wondered about whether, if they hadn't just coddled her or chastised her and told her to get over it, maybe she would actually know how to have some semblance of control over her own emotions.
