call the police

Day 3; open, though beware that i kermit will have a neurotic episode if post rotations take too long

The Recesses consist of the lower, below ground levels of The Compound. Accessing The Recesses requires passing through the upper levels of the Compound itself and down its central, spiral staircase to the depths below. The Recesses are pitch black, even during the day, and the average person will need to use a flashlight to be able to see.

The rooms on the outer edges of below ground floors of The Compound contrast heavily with the ones above ground, with each being much larger and seemingly all having distinct intended purposes. Rooms vary from obstacle courses, to shooting galleries, to operating rooms, most of which have attached observation rooms with one-way glass panels. Two notable rooms consist of one full of decrepit, 70s era computers, and another that has a coal fired generator that takes up most of the room, with an exhaust pipe leading up into the ceiling and out.

Just like the above ground floors, furniture has been clearly displaced to create cover in the hallways, but only some of the furniture of the below ground floors has been moved in this way, in contrast to the above ground floors. As a result, the majority of the furniture within The Recesses remain seemingly undisturbed, though most useful items have still been removed.

From inside the darkness, Joel was enveloped within the shadowy confines of a hug.

She sniffled quietly, and didn't give him an answer.

The hug was enough of an answer for him.

He didn't say anything. He knew words weren't going to help in a moment like this, and he wasn't even sure if he could get any out. It was best to just let his actions speak for themselves. As usual.

Astrid was enveloped in a hug as well. The left hand stayed motionless where it was on her back, while the right moved in circles between her shoulder blades, trying to do its best to comfort.

Joel took in and let out a breath, feeling it hard to not shake.

He had done his crying. He was going to keep it together this time.

He had to be strong. He had to.

She just held Joel, not stabbing him.

She closed her eyes. Then she took a shaky breath in.

"...,"

She took another, longer, breath. She sniffled again.

"I'm okay." She said softly.

Ana had finished tending to her injuries, she had done as much as she could but she knew her attempts had been amateur. The parasite passed the flashlight back to her and she shut it off. In the darkness, she could hear Joel approach Astrid and them moving together, then silence. Her eyes narrowed and she frowned as he wasn't rejected but instead shared a moment with her. Astrid got to be comforted while Ana herself got to be abandoned in the darkness. She didn't understand why, she didn't understand what she had done wrong.

The parasite shivered and moved down her body to her ankle, making itself as small as possible. Ana started to feel a burning in her chest and face as bitterness erupted within her. She wanted to say something, to yell at the pair of them, to let them know she was there and hurt. That she wanted someone who would actually talk to her and care about her. Who wouldn't abandon her.

But she didn't.

Instead, she stayed sat against the wall and took a drink from her pack. Still staring into the darkness, waiting to see if they'd remember she existed.

"Okay."

He still didn't let go.

He'd wait until she was ready.

"Do you want to get out of here? Get somewhere...brighter?"

Joel wanted to see the light again, but it would wait if it needed to.

Not like it was going anywhere.

The parasite slowly crawled back up her arm and nuzzled into her neck in an attempt to comfort her. Ana gently stroked it with her left hand, continuing to listen to the hushed conversation and movements of the other two occupants in the room. Aside from them, the darkness was silent. She couldn't hear anyone else moving around in the recesses and definitely couldn't hear anything that sounded like the werebat Astrid claimed was lurking somewhere.

Ana was glad about that. Dealing with Isabella had been bad enough, she couldn't imagine having to deal with an actual bat monster. As she gazed into the blackness she imagined great glowing yellow eyes gazing back at her, then moving closer as hot, humid breath hit her face. The weird jagged movements of the leathery wings and its coarse matted fur came into her minds eye.

The image her brain had conjured of the monster caused her to shiver and stroke the parasite some more, meanwhile, it wrapped tighter around her shoulder, causing her to grimace and hiss in pain as it squeezed on the injury. Instinctively Ana pushed it away and it grabbed onto her left hand and transferred its mass over onto her left arm. Her hand squeezed on it as it passed back up her arm, this time resting on her left shoulder instead.

She considered leaving but she couldn't bring herself to do it because despite how angry she was with Astrid, she was still too scared to venture out alone.

Tension. Refusal.

It might be a problem, but one he could deal with later.

"Okay. We can stay here for a while. I'm not in a rush."

Plans can wait. Joel had family to take care of.

A hiss reminded him they weren't alone.

He hoped Ana could wait a little longer for a response.

"Okay." Astrid muttered.

A few seconds later, her hug around Joel constricted slightly.

"Austin, if you're still here, I want you to know they lied about how Jenelle died. She was using her collar like a suicide bomb." She said.

And still, they quietly talked in their own private corner of the darkness. Meanwhile, she was left to sit and wait, a potential target for whatever bat monster Astrid claimed stalked the abyssal hallways. Ana ran a hand through her hair and sighed to herself. She felt some dust from the explosion debris fall down onto her face and lap. She wondered if Astrid or Joel had been nearby when it had happened, or if they had been affected by it as she had been.

She had no idea and based on how her interactions with Astrid had gone she doubted if she would ever find out. Ana thought about saying something but stopped herself because she was certain anything she did would be treated with verbal aggression from Astrid.

So she continued to wait while experimenting with different shapes for the parasite. Checking what type of weapons she could make from it.

In case any werebats appeared.

What a bomb to drop.

It wasn't surprising to hear the announcer lied. He was someone that should know that best.

But he could feel the guilt bubbling. Making his entire midsection feel twisted.

Joel swallowed down air, doing his best to keep the bile down, coming up with something to say.

"I think she always does that. Makes it sound different. Worse, usually."

It was louder this time. Enough that Ana should've been able to hear.

"They want us desperate. To do what they want."

And they need to avoid doing what the psychos want. As much as possible.

Astrid remained silent for a few moments. She adjusted the grip she had on the glass shank in her hand so that it was no longer angled towards Joel's back.

She took a shaky breath in, and sighed it out quietly.

"You're a good kid, Joel. You're a good guy. It's okay, it's okay." She said, holding the shorter boy close and giving him a single pat on the back.

Her mouth wobbled. She sniffled, and something started to drip down from the corner of her eyes.

"Killing people is hard. It's really really scary. It's some of the hardest things I've ever done." She choked. "It's okay, if you want to talk about it, I'm here. It's okay."

The parasite was riled up or maybe she was and it was just feeding off her own emotions. Ana had never been especially sure how the connection between them worked. The parasite existed as an extension of her own body but also had its own degree of sentience, it could do its own things when it wanted to. But at that moment in time, it was a constantly moving mass, that occasionally spiked itself up like a hedgehog or pufferfish.

Her concentration on it had dropped when she heard Joel suddenly talking at a louder volume, talking about how the people who had kidnapped them and subjected them to the occasional update on how had died and who had killed them lied about what actually happened and how people died.

Ana was sure that he was right, after all, they had told everyone she had killed Isabella and framed it as she had broken her neck and just left her there. Although Ana was sure the parasite had killed her instantly. But at the same time, she had never checked to make sure. The thought of being left abandoned in the basement to slowly die made her shiver and she really hoped Isabella hadn't had to go through that.

It was at that point Ana realized that all three of them had killed someone. Which was an insane thought to have about herself and three of her classmates. They were still in high school. They had been on their way to a potato farm.

"I think you're right." She said quietly, before realizing it would have been too quiet for Joel to hear and swallowing before repeating herself.

"I think you're right."

Don't cry don't cry don't cry...

Joel took a breath in, and let the breath out.

Ana had a piece to say. She agreed with him.

And he felt like he had to say it. What happened. He wasn't getting a situation like Kennedy again, and he knew they deserved to know what happened. So he just needed to open up and say it.

"I was in a group, before. With Orion, Lucine and...Nora. It was okay, but then the first announcement happened, telling us to kill or the the collars would blow, and...and Nora must have freaked out. No one was paying attention and she switched bottles with Orion."

Breathe, breathe, breathe.

"The next time I saw him, he...he couldn't move. He could only talk through his Gift. And I-I tried to help him, I thought I could help, I just wanted to help him-"

Fuck, he hated crying.

"I-I couldn't do anything, though. All...all I could do was just...make it stop...

"So I did."

Breathe in, breathe out. Breathe in, breathe out.

"I'm...gonna guess she lied about you guys, too?"

Astrid gave Joel another, slightly stiffer, pat on the back.

"Yvette was next to Jenelle when she went off." She said. She stood silent for a moment. "I offered to step on her. She said yeah."
