The Mute
Time-displaced nonlinear microfiction multishot. Yes it's 19 pages. I'm allowed, it's avant-garde!! (cw for mental Unhealth)
Here is where all threads set in the past belong. This is the place to post your characters' memories, good or bad, major or insignificant. Handlers may have one active memory thread at the same time as their normal active present-day thread. Memory one-shots are always acceptable.

Astrid liked talking about death, because talking about death was fun. She liked watching TV shows where fictional characters died, because death made any story juicier, and they weren't real people. She didn't like looking at actual people dying, because looking at actual people dying was rude and also emotional self-harm.

Eddie hadn't known what his Gift was until he was fourteen years old. During a game of truth or dare, he'd been dared to shave off half his left eyebrow. The eyebrow then grew back overnight.
Dad's Gift was that he'd been born with a vestigial tail. The hospital had offered to remove it, and grandma and grandpa said yes because it was still the late '70s and that was considered an OK thing to do.
Mom said she didn't know for sure what her Gift was, but she was about 95.5 to 97.3 percent sure it factored into her ability to easily spot incongruencies within financial spreadsheets.
When Astrid saw herself in family photos, she was only ever reminded of how alone she was.

Three goths plus Craig loitered in the shade, talking beneath a cherry blossom outside the world's last Blockbuster.
In the background, a family of Conservative Mennonites wearing traditional Mennonite garb exited the Blockbuster. They stopped in their tracks and regarded the goths for a few moments.
Jared raised a hand and waved. "Hi," he said.
The Mennonites nodded politely and continued on their way.
"Craig, go! Join your people!" Sarah said quietly.
"I'm not Amish." Craig said quietly.
"Well, actually, they're Mennonite, not Amish." Astrid said. "Oh that reminds me, have you guys ever visited the Mennonite church in town? I visited it a few months ago just to see what would happen, and they were actually, like, really really nice," she continued. "Like, I thought they were just going to chase me around while hitting me with brooms or whatever, but instead they just kind of offered me some coffee and let me hang out during service and stuff. I think they were a different branch than those guys over there, though. The sermon was about, like, how Jesus wasn't a white dude, and stuff, and they were all wearing, like, normal clothes, and not, "the painting American Gothic is my number one style influence," clothes. Oh, and -

"Did anything else interesting happen since the last time we talked?" Miranda asked.
"I went to a wedding, I guess," Astrid said.
A few moments of silence.
"... And, how was it?" Miranda asked.
"It was okay, I guess," Astrid said.
"Did you dress up for it?" Miranda asked.
"Not really," Astrid said. She crossed her arms and leaned back in the chair. Her head lulled to the side slightly.
"What about your makeup; did you wear it any differently?" Miranda asked.
"Because weddings are light and happy?" Astrid asked.
"Mm." Miranda said, nodding her head quickly.
"I didn't, no. I just wore it the same as always," Astrid said.
Another few moments of silence went by. Miranda wrote something down on her notepad.
"You wear your makeup in a very distinct way." She then said.
Astrid uncrossed her arms, sat up straight, and then crossed her arms.
"Are you asking a question about why it's like that?" Astrid asked, briefly bringing a hand to point up at her own face, and the dark makeup around her similarly dark eyes.
"Mm, if that's alright." Miranda said.
"Okay. Let me think of an eloquent way to say the answer," Astrid said.
"I haven't asked the question yet." Miranda said.
"Yeah, you did," Astrid said.
"Okay." Miranda said. She wrote something down on her notepad.
A minute passed.
"Okay," Astrid said.
"Okay." Miranda said.
"I think a lot of people try to hide their weaknesses, but what smart people do is find a way to use their own weakness. Because then, when someone tries to hurt you with it, they're just conceding to you." Astrid stated.
"Elaborate." Miranda said.
Astrid smiled with her mouth closed and didn't say anything.
