General Conversation Thread
Hey, folks!
Way way back in distant days of yore, when it was difficult to get people online at the same time and instant communication meant everyone had to be physically sitting at their computers, a lot of conversation happened instead on the boards. This was, in fact, the primary way I communicated with a lot of folks for a while, because our time zones didn't sync up and IRC didn't keep logs.
Thanks to Discord, to a large extent those days are past, but I sometimes miss the slower yet longer-term pace of conversation based around a forum. So with that in mind, here's a thread to just... chat. Except on the boards. Like we did in the paleolithic era.

I’d say “This takes me back” or something to that effect, but I wasn’t alive for that era of the internet.
I think I might be one of the youngest members on the site. Definitely in the top 3, at least. It’s kind of funny to think that, when I was first learning how to talk, MW was writing it up in V4. Now, I’m learning to write, and MW’s still writing it up in a bunch of different versions.
I actually knew about SOTF circa 2020 due to being a TVTropes browser, so I could’ve joined for TV3, International, Supers, etc. But it’s probably better that I didn’t; 13/14-year-old MonteCristo was a little goober who would’ve gotten himself banned.
(Though one is inclined to wonder what would’ve happened if the totally epic and very cool TV3 character Orlando Lambert existed in this timeline.)
I may not talk a whole lot outside of RP stuff and replying to shout-outs with little "thank-yous", but I truly enjoy being here. It's both really fun and really helpful being part of a community of writers who've got a lot more experience and know-how than I do. Plus, I've always been a sucker for stories with large ensemble casts that get picked off over time. I've always loved writing—it's my favorite hobby, no contest—but until now I've never gotten the chance to practice, share, and improve it like I have here. And collaborative storytelling is just plain awesome; nothing gets me more excited than seeing a bunch of people writing a bunch of characters and pulling off a bunch of incredible things. So thanks for having me. I look forward to continuing to write with you all.
Currently, I'm in the middle of reading TV3 (I'm reading it somewhat chronologically, jumping from storyline to storyline using the death order and rolls as a guide to tell where I am. Right now I'm around Sarah/Beau), and I'm loving it. If it was set in 2024 do you think they would've named themselves The Rizzpects-

Oh man, I actually feel this too. I first found SOTF shortly before the V3 cutoff, and while there's only a ~10ish month gap between that and whenever I actually joined, the lengthy duration of V4 Pregame meant that it was several years before I was writing on-island stuff (actually the first island writing I did was the original BRAU—there was a time when I thought Mizuho was the best work I'd ever do). That was a lot of time to solidify a better sense of what I wanted to do and avoid some of the excesses that were otherwise in vogue at the time.MonteCristo wrote: ↑Wed May 15, 2024 6:31 amI actually knew about SOTF circa 2020 due to being a TVTropes browser, so I could’ve joined for TV3, International, Supers, etc. But it’s probably better that I didn’t; 13/14-year-old MonteCristo was a little goober who would’ve gotten himself banned.

I'm glad you're here! I hope you're enjoying TV3! It was a super fun version to work on, and it's wild to me that it's in the rearview mirror now. It's really interesting, timing-wise, how TV3's pop culture references are actually vaguely close to where they should be (it being set in 2021), while TV1 and TV2, both set in 2020, feel very much of their RL eras (2011 and 2014 respectively).

Wow, I feel old.
I think the last time i was writing around on board like this was around 2018-ish? (On facebook, and Steve Jobs was still alive, I think ) And it wasn't even that much.
(And the one time a tried to write a fanfic, with horrible results)
(Also yeah, Discord is wild but i'm growing used to be far from American's timezones )
(So anyway, if you were wondering where did i take the photos sunday, there was this convention where i ended up being a presenter/introducer/tutorial guy for easy tabletop games (with no less than 5 Hazbin hotel cosplays, where i was like ) 1 (one) Power and Makina, the whole Payday gang and one John Wick (I swear, i was this close to say that he was breathtaking) and photographed that while everyone was closing up. The only people left were said cosplayers having a final contest near the beach)
(Also, I could have bought a nice game based around literally handing the other players in a card game, but i chose violence )(Cit.)

I think this thread needs drama. So I'm starting it.
Ahem.
What is the correct way to eat fish and chips: with your fork, or with your hands?

Depends on the place of eating.
At home I use my hands, no questions asked. But in a restaurant or other public place I use the fork.
Drama averted.

I eat with my hands in public, with a fork in private.
You have to use hands in public, otherwise you'll demolish the fish when dipping it in ketchup. The fish are too hot for my hands at home, but at least there I can spread the ketchup on my fish instead of putting it into one of those dipping cups.

Ooh, this is neat. It's been so long since I did any cosplay/convention stuff—there is one in town, though, so I should see about attending this year maybe.Ahab9 wrote: ↑Fri May 17, 2024 4:55 pm (So anyway, if you were wondering where did i take the photos sunday, there was this convention where i ended up being a presenter/introducer/tutorial guy for easy tabletop games (with no less than 5 Hazbin hotel cosplays, where i was like ) 1 (one) Power and Makina, the whole Payday gang and one John Wick (I swear, i was this close to say that he was breathtaking) and photographed that while everyone was closing up. I'm a radical centrist or something: depends on the size of the fish and the level of grease, but IMO either way is acceptable.
Did you know you can ping people on the board? You just have to quote them and they get a little notification unless they turned it off. Like this:
