There was this one photo in Astrid's junior year yearbook of her, Jared, and Sarah just kind of sitting around while vibing. The dumb fucking idiot taking the photo had forgotten to turn the flash off, so Jared and Sarah's eyes were glowing red. When Astrid looked close, she could see her eyes had a very dim glow as well; just kind of staring vacantly into the middle distance in a direction other than at the camera.
It... it bothered her. It bothered her a lot. She didn't want to tell anyone, because it wasn't like they'd understand -- they'd just fucking laugh at her, like she was overreacting, because they didn't know what it was like -- but it just really really really bothered her. The photo itself was fine; it was whatever, she didn't care. She just... she just really didn't like that her pupils were visible in the photo.
It was hard to explain. She just really really hated it. It made her really really uncomfortable. She knew nobody cared that they could see her pupils. Like, whatever, so what, everyone else's pupils are always visible, who cares? Astrid cared. She cared a lot. It felt like - she didn't know how to describe it. It was kind of like how she thought celebrities felt when paparazzi took pictures of them having wardrobe malfunctions. That was what it felt like. Maybe not quite that. But it was like that.

When Astrid stood in the corner of a room, she could be looking at anything and nobody could tell. She looked like she was looking at everyone all at once.
