The Barque of Dante

Sometime during the night between the first and second announcements. Private unless it stops being private.

The yacht is like a larger, more luxuriant cross-breed of the house boat and the RocketBoat. Sleek and clean on the outside, its interior offers sleeping and dining quarters which rival the elegance of the cruise ship. There are, however, faint signs of conflict in some parts, with scratches in the wood and what looks like bullet holes in the bedroom; this particular yacht was seized from a drug kingpin in a DEA raid and was acquired by the producers following the trial. As this took quite some time, the yacht's amenities are charmingly dated; the stereo system has a state of the art CD/cassette deck, and the decorations have a marked 1995 vibe to them.

The Barque of Dante

#1

Post by Kermit »

((Continued from Untitled Film Still #26 and Untitled Film Still #21.))

Luanne Grasset lay asleep on the floor of the yacht's dining room, staring at the inside of her eyelids.

She dreamed of the open sea, painted a fiery orange by the setting sun. Endless horizons in every direction. Almost glowing, but not quite. The sound of water. She was on a raft with Laura Hakštok. Pippi and Noreen were there too intermittently, but for the most part it was just her and Laura. She'd fallen, and now she couldn't stand up, and Laura was pulling her to the edge of the raft. And then Laura was gone. Everything was gone.

Luanne Grasset lay awake on the floor of the yacht's dining room, staring at the inside of her eyelids. She couldn't move her body at all, and she couldn't breathe. She was used to it. It would pass. It always did.

Despite everything, Pippi could only think about how she didn't know how to spell the word yacht.
She didn't know where the h went.
Neither the t.
She thought about it.
Hard.

Did Timothy?
Did Oliver?
Did Xander?
Did Maxine?
Did Abel?

Did Seo-yun?
Did Akeno?
Did Rhonda?
Did Carol?
Did Verity?

She stared at the ceiling. It stared back at her with its mechanical eye. She kept staring. She knew she couldn't win the staring contest. But she kept staring. Her eyes wide. She swallowed, both her tears and her saliva. It stuck in her throat like glue.

"Steph?"

A small voice.
It didn't sound like Pippi's.

"Are you there?"

"No. I don't have that sort of power. Not in most circumstances. If you want to die that way, then... you'll have to go to the cargo floats. Or try to break one of the cameras. You'll have to do it yourself. I can't just... end your life for you.

"And even if I... could, I wouldn't. That's...

...

"That's an absolute. You wouldn't... be able to convince me to let you die."

Her throat choked. Her tears filling her face and her nose and her mouth. She could drown if she stayed like this. She couldn't breath. Her body hurt. Her mind hurt more. The entire world was watching, and the only thing she could do what crying like a child denied of a basic commodity. It was pathetic, and it made her feel sick. Any bravado she had prior during the day was gone, and the only thing left in her body was the despair encompassing every organs.

"I can't do this Steph, " she choked again. "I can't do this. I can't- I can't." She shook her head. "I can't. I can't do this, it's too hard." She wasn't sure what she was talking about anymore. Maybe it was about killing herself, maybe it was about escape, maybe it was just living in general. "It's too hard."

"Please Steph, I can't do it. I can't. I want to, but I'm scared. I'm so, so scared. I can't even-" She burst into tears again, her body convulsing on the ground. "I'm so scared, I'm so frightened. I can't do it, I can't." Her fingers dug at her collar, pulling and pinning the camera attached to her. It was frantic like a dog trapped in a fox trap, knowing it wouldn't get out but also knowing that if it did nothing, there wouldn't be any hope left. "Please." She remembered the words. "What's- what's most circumstances? Steph, what do you mean by that? What are the exceptions? Steph, what are the exceptions? Please, please?"

The voices continued. She couldn't think about what they were saying, because they weren't real, but thinking about them made them feel real and she knew that would send her into a panic. She could kind of half-recognize one of the voices as Pippi's. It sounded like it was in pain. Begging. Breaking down. It wasn't real. It was just her half-asleep mind playing tricks on her based off of her fears, and Pippi was a person she'd grown to care about during the past day, and so it made sense that she was afraid of Pippi being in pain. It had to pass. This had to pass. "I won't let you hang yourself," she'd said to Pippi. That was why she was having a nightmare about Pippi giving up. It wasn't real. It would be over soon. It had to be over soon. But what if it was real? She couldn't tell. What if it was real. What if it was real. Pippi needed someone to lean on. Pippi needed a friend. She needed to help Pippi. Pippi was her friend now. She didn't need to justify helping her. She didn't need to justify doing the right thing. The thing you needed to make the least excuses to do was usually the right thing to do, she thought. But this was a dream. But what if it wasn't. She tried to wiggle her toes. Nothing happened. She still couldn't move. It had to end.

Repeat after me. What are you looking at? Why are you here? Who do you think you are? Who do you want to be? What did you say? What do you want? How can I become a saint?

Repeat after me. The meaning of life is that it stops.

Repeat after me. You are not yourself.

"Please?"
She begged.
Maybe for release.
"Stephanie?"

Her throat choked up again.
There was silence.
And then there was the emptiness.
She waited for the mic to crack up again

with bated breath,
with eyes darting around,
with her breathing picking up:
she waited.

"Not in... any context like this. You'll have to try and kill someone you're not allowed to kill."

"You make me sick."
Literally.
She wanted to vomit.
She curled on herself, holding her arms against her stomach.

Luanne Grasset lay awake on the floor of the yacht's dining room, staring at the bottom of a fancy dining table. Reflexively, she grasped at the ground.

She yawned and glanced over at where Pippi was laying, ten or so feet away. It was still night, so all she could see were silhouettes in grays and blues and blacks, but there was a Pippi-shaped blob and so that was good probably.

She held her breath for a few seconds, just listening. Waves lapped against the hull of the yacht. She thought she could hear Pippi's breathing, which meant she was alive, and that was good definitely.

She wanted to check and ask Pippi if she was okay, but she wasn't sure if she was awake or not, and if she wasn't, she didn't want to wake her up. She deserved a good night's sleep, and she'd probably need one if her brain was going to do math stuff or whatever it was she did in there.

Luanne turned her head to the other side of the room, looking at Pat the Pirate Skeleton. He was slumped backwards in a chair right in front of the room's entrance. Keeping watch, except not really because he was a plastic skeleton. She hoped he was plastic. Laura was probably kind of mad that they'd just walked away with her skeleton. Hopefully not too mad.

She wondered what the stars looked like here.

...

...

She wasn't going to fall back asleep. She still wasn't sure if she'd really heard Pippi or not. So she was going to stay awake, just in case it was real. Because she'd need to be awake and alert to be able to properly, um, deal with Pippi's emotional issues.

So she kept staring up at the underside of the dining table.

Her neck hurt. It would have been nice to have a bed, but there was some boy in the yacht's bed, so.
