The outlying jetties are much like their central cousins, but sparser, more open, and more rickety. These walkways extend to the far edges of the flotilla, servicing single boats or in many cases truncating abruptly with nothing but a drop into the water. These jetties have guardrails and life preservers available in some places, but their presence (and maintenance) cannot be relied upon. There are still places to take cover, and occasional crates and barrels lying around, but these nooks and crannies are less common.

A girl sat alone beside a crate on the end of a wooden jetty, looking out across the sea. She had long tangled dark brown hair, large hooded brown eyes, a small refined nose, and thin lips. She was wearing a Supreme-brand t-shirt over a sleeveless white blouse, a pair of dark brown capris, and black loafers; all of which were covered in various daubs and smears of dried human blood, of which none was hers. She was also currently wearing a waterproof backpack, and a pair of fashionable sunglasses. She had an amber-beaded bracelet around her right wrist, and a pink bandana tied loosely around her bicep. Around her neck, she had a collar-shaped tanline.

Suddenly, she stood up, and clambered up onto the crate. She ripped the bandana from her arm, and waved it frantically through the air at a shape in the distance.

And slowly, second by second, that shape in the distance came closer, churning through the ocean, headed directly for Luanne.

A woman stood by herself at the helm of the boat, looking straight towards the jetties and boats of the flotilla. She had shoulder-length wavy pink hair, an emerald green eye, a button nose, and similarly thin lips. She was wearing a black gillet over a black and white horizontally striped t-shirt, baggy pink trousers, and formal black shoes; all of which looked creased and stiffened up, as if she hadn’t changed in a couple of days. She was also wearing a black tricorn on top of her head, and an eyepatch over her right eye. She had a silver spider-bite lip-ring on the lower-right corner of her mouth, and two rings inside her earlobes. There was nothing visible around her neck. Not after five years.

When the boat stopped, parallel to the jetty behind Luanne’s crate, the woman gave a great big wave. She hurried frantically to the embarkment point, bent down, and offered a hand, for when Luanne reached her.

She just kept staring as the figure approached. Eventually, she lowered her arm. But she still just kept staring out from behind her big bug-eyed sunglasses, with her eyebrows neutral and her lip shaking and her jaw shut like it was winched tight with wire. And even as the boat circled to its berth at the other side of the jetty, she stood still.

...

Eventually, after a few seconds, she took a brief glance over her shoulder, and then she looked forward and out across the sea once more.

She inhaled quietly.

"...," she said.

She took another quiet breath in, turned around, and slowly lowered herself into a sitting position. Then, she dropped down to the jetty, and pulled herself forward, shuffling over to meet Stephanie and the boat.

She grabbed Stephanie's hand, and then hesitated for a moment until being yanked aboard.


And that was that.
