The SOTF Songtest #23

#1

Post by Cactus »

Hello everybody, it's your favourite Canadian Desert Fauna and welcome to the 23rd SOTF Song Contest!

Image

A broken clock is right twice a day, and for the second time, I've managed to score myself some cool hosting powers for the ol' songtest and I couldn't be more excited. One of the things that I've tried to do since I've come back to SOTF is carry through when I say that I'm going to do something, and this will be no different. If you've ever heard me in chat, you know exactly what kind of theme is coming next, because I've been saying it for months.

My last time hosting, I ran a 90s contest that delivered me with so much nostalgia I felt young again. So naturally, we're taking a step back. To a decade that bore witness to a lot of really fantastic trends... and some not so fantastic trends (it also marked my entrance into the world, so eyyyyy). Let us take a step back, another ten years.

That's right, friends! The theme for this upcoming songtest is: The 1980s.
[+] Specific 80s Theme Rules

So, a few small rules for the theme itself.

1) The theme can be from any genre, however you'd like to do it is fine - country, pop, rap, electronic, movie themes, video game themes - whatever you want is gravy. Provided...
2) The song must have been released between January 1st, 1980 and December 31st, 1989. Anything before or after - too bad! You're out of luck for this time around.
3) No Eurovision Covers - regular covers are fine though.
4) No reality show/competition covers.
5) Please don't use anything we've used in a prior songtest (Master Songtest Sheet here).
6) If a song doesn't happen to your cup of tea, try not to slag it relentlessly in chat if you can avoid it - these things are all for fun and we all have wildly different tastes, which is why these are so fun!

I'm going to very shamelessly steal Shiola's rules:
[+] Songtest Rules
Songs will be randomly divided into 2 or 3 semifinals depending on turnout. if you're going to be away at some point in the next couple of weeks, let me know and I can try to put your song in a round when you'll be here.

Listen to every song and give points to your top 10 favorites: 12 to your favorite, 10 to your second, 8 to your third, 7 to your fourth, and so on down to 1 point for your tenth favorite.

If your song is in a given round, you must vote that round or you'll be eliminated. if your song isn't in that round (or you aren't in the contest at all), your vote will be counted as a public vote, which counts for half points. If you're doing a public vote in chat, tag me in Discord with @Dodd so that I can find them.

Public votes will all count as half-votes like we've been doing lately. I like this way so much better than the old system.

The top songs will move on to the final; the number of top songs depends on the number of contestants. Repeat the process for the finals and we get a winner.

The winner gets to hold the next contest, or they can pass the job along to 2nd place if they don't want to. 2nd place can pass down to third, etc, until someone wants to host.

Each semifinal and the final will last for three days.

If you know at the start of your semifinal that you wont be available to vote for those four days, let me know and I can move you to another semifinal, if we aren't on the final one already.
Signups will run until I see fit or we get around 30 people. That's usually a good number.

Uh-oh.

It's time.

While Larry Blackmon and Cameo made an appearance in another competition, Larry knows exactly what you're all looking for - and it is I, the Canadian Desert Fauna (1986), here to provide.

That's right - it's Semi-Final #1!

Our first semi-final matchup has the following contenders, listed in alphabetical order:

Cicada
Dan
Frozen Smoke
Irene
Kilmarnock
Laurels
LoA
Ohm
Oliver
Paige
Pan
Pippin
RC
Rugga
Toben

And from these wonderful competitors, here are their song selections, in totally random order:

1. Say Hello, Wave Goodbye - Soft Cell (1981)
2. Let's Dance - David Bowie (1983)
3. Cold War - Oppenheimer Analysis (1982)
4. Once in a Lifetime - Talking Heads (1980)
5. Don't You Want Me - The Human League (1981)
6. Heaven is a Place on Earth - Belinda Carlisle (1987)
7. Mr. Crowley - Ozzy Osbourne (1980)
8. The Ghost in You - Psychedelic Furs (1984)
9. Don't You (Forget About Me) - Simple Minds (1985)
10. Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) - Eurythmics (1983)
11. Will the Wolf Survive - Los Lobos (1984)
12. Princess of the Night - Saxon (1981)
13. Princes of the Universe - Queen (1986)
14. Twist in My Sobriety - Tanita Tikaram (1988)
15. Shake the Hands of Time - Romeo Void (1982)
---

That groovy, rad and tubular group of songs is semi-final #1!

You all know how to vote, so I'm not going to throw a ton of voting mumbo-jumbo at the end. Hit me up via board pm or Discord private message (I'm not gonna go searching through voice to find your votes).

The Top 10 will make the Finals.

You have three days - I figure that should be enough time for everyone to style their mullets, flare out their pants and find all the neon you possibly can.

V1: B092 - Eddie Serjeantson: Fully in charge, but not much of an arborist.
V2: B013 - Andrew Ponikarovsky: Probably could have used a proper license and a driving lesson.
V1: G005 - Amanda Jones: A breath of fresh air, and in the end, that was all it took.
V3: B099 - John Sheppard: Went out with a bang.
V3: B122 - Ryan Atwell: Couldn't help but write a "Dear John" letter.

WELL LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING SOTF!

BACK IN THE 80S, HULKAMANIA WAS RUNNING WILD, BROTHER, AND NOBODY KNEW THAT THE HULKSTER WAS A CLOSET RACIST OR WEIRDO WHO WAS GOING TO MAKE A SEX TAPE, BROTHER.

Image

While the Hulkster should probably have eased off the roids, thankfully for this songtest round we don't need to listen to it on his boom-box. Enjoy the 80s while you can, big guy. But enough about the Hulkster...

It's time for semi-final 2!

Our second semi-final matchup has the following contenders, listed in alphabetical order:

Buko
Brackie
CBP
Deamon
dmboogie
DN
Dodd
Endellion
Fenris
Jilly
Kami
Kermit
Maraoone
Riki
Slam

And from these wonderful competitors, here are their song selections, in totally random order:

1. Seven Wonders - Fleetwood Mac (1987)
2. Born Under Punches - Talking Heads (1980)
3. Land of Confusion - Genesis (1986)
4. A View to a Kill - Duran Duran (1985)
5. Dr. Feelgood - Motley Crue (1989)
6. Rebel Yell - Billy Idol (1983)
7. Self-Control - Laura Branigan (1984)
8. Walk of Life - Dire Straits (1985)
9. Blue Monday - New Order (1982)
10. Shout - Tears for Fears (1984)
11. Mad World - Tears for Fears (1983)
12. Let's Hear it for the Boy - Deniece Williams (1984)
13. Lookout Weekend - Debbie Deb (1984)
14. Total Eclipse of the Heart - Bonnie Tyler (1983)
15. Blasphemous Rumours - Depeche Mode (1984)
---

That groovy, rad and tubular group of songs is semi-final #2!

You all know how to vote, so I'm not going to throw a ton of voting mumbo-jumbo at the end. Hit me up via board pm or Discord private message (I'm not gonna go searching through voice to find your votes).

The Top 10 will make the Finals.

You have three days - I figure that should be enough time for everyone to put themselves in their spandex and carefully trim your moustaches!

Time's up!

This was a hard-fought round. Unfortunately, some of our contestants didn't prepare the right dish, and well, Andy'll tell you what he thinks of that.
