Amelia was legitimately surprised that she hadn’t fallen to the ground yet, as she waited for Mike or Anton to speak. She felt weak, so ridiculously weak that she was sure the wall of the house was the only thing keeping her up. She tried to avert her eyes from Tania’s corpse, but how could she not look at it? The girl had been killed, killed by her own two hands. Why had it all come to this? That the only option left for Amelia was to follow the Sheriff’s orders? Amelia couldn’t just go along like before, pretending everything was okay, joining up with people to form some half-assed plan to escape, before watching them get slaughtered in front of her.
Amelia looked up towards the two figures as Mike spoke up. She wiped away her tears as she listened to the larger figure speak. So the girl had been his friend? The statement sent a wave of new emotions through Amelia. The thought that Mike would never be able to see his friend again made her feel awful, but then again, everyone here was friends with someone, weren’t they? If Amelia wanted to escape out of here alive, she had to accept that fact. As selfish as it was, and as much as Amelia cared about everybody at school, she was the most important person in her life, and if it was her life and the girl’s life on the line... well, that point had already been demonstrated.
Amelia didn’t answer Mike, though. She didn’t want to anger him, didn’t want to do anything stupid; the guy could easily snap her like a twig, and even though she knew he would never usually do that, this situation was bringing out the worst in people. Including me.
Amelia was calming down now, her tears halted for the moment. Whenever she caught a glimpse of Tania’s body, she felt sick and horrible again, but she needed to push that aside. She needed to live. Taking a deep breath, Amelia used the pickaxe to lever herself up. Her legs still felt wobbly, and she put her hand against the wall of the house, looking up at the two boys. They were having some sort of private discussion, talking too quietly for Amelia to hear. She knew that the two could cause trouble later on, and there was a high chance that she’d be forced to attack them no matter what, but she couldn’t try and kill them. Not yet, not right now. I need to clear my thoughts... again.
Anton and Mike were still conversing, but they were steadfastly keeping their eyes on Amelia. Well, of course. You’re... you just... Oh, God, you just killed their friend in front of them. They’re not gonna let me out of their sights for a moment.
Amelia didn’t know what the guys were planning, but they couldn’t stay together, if they were planning on keeping watch over her. Either she’d wind up killing them both, or she’d wind up forming a bond with them... and she knew how well that had gone last time.
Amelia cleared her throat, and as she did so, she realised just how thirsty she was, and how much the cut on her arm hurt. Everything had just been flung out of her mind, until now. Amelia looked round for her pack, then remembered it was round the corner of the building. She looked back towards Anton and Mike. “He-hey.” She attempted to shout, but her voice came out much weaker than normal. “I, uh... I...” Amelia thought about what she should say, thought about telling her she needed her pack, thought about saying something more about how much she didn’t want to do all this, how sorry she truly was. But all that she said was “... I need to leave... and get as far away from you two as possible.”
Anyone out there?
I... I don't think there's much we can do for her....."
Mike nodded in response to Anton's words. This girl had it just as bad as they did, maybe even worse, but that still didn't mean that she wasn't a killer. Because of her, there was one less person with a chance of getting out of this wasteland alive.
The hockey player looked at Anton's face. Any spark of life or enthusiasm it previously had seemed to have disappeared. Frankly, Anton had every right in the world to be upset. This was the guy who was totally gung-ho about finding a way to escape and was sure that none of his classmates would kill each other. Fast forward a few hours, and almost half the class has been slaughtered, one of whom right in front of their eyes. Their hopes of escaping seemed to be shrinking by the second.
...And this girl...this damn girl...just made things even worse for them.
"We.... We should probably be on our way."
Well, Anton was ready to go, and Mike didn't really want to hang around here any longer either. He looked at the girl in front of him. She appeared to be having some sort of emotional breakdown. Then again, if you kill somebody, you're gonna have to live with the consequences, and it looked like she was finding that out the hard way.
"... I need to leave... and get as far away from you two as possible."
That was all the girl had to say. Mike had hoped for something along the lines of "I'm sorry I killed your friend", but no such luck. Then again, his luck has been terrible ever since he got to this God-forsaken desert, so why should it change now? Mike slung his bag over his shoulder and addressed the girl for what would probably be the final time.
"I hope you can live with yourself."

Anton stood there for a moment longer, listening to what Amelia had to say before finally turning around and walking away in silence.
He didn't know where he was going, or what he intended to do next. All he knew was that we wanted to be as far away from this town as possible. Within a matter of minutes, all his half-baked plans had been thoroughly shattered, along with any idealistic notions he had that he and the rest of his friends stood any chance of surviving this mess without resorting to violence. He was, to put it simply, a broken man whose hopes for the future died along with Tania and Tito.
The only thing that really kept him going was the crucifix he wore around his neck, which he was still clutching as he walked off into the distance.
God forgive us all...

Amelia waited in silence, listening to what Mike had to say. He hoped that she could live with herself? Right now, Amelia didn’t know if she could. Tania had been completely innocent, and it suddenly dawned to Amelia that it had only been a day, less even, since they’d all been placed in this wasteland. Less than 24 hours ago, this girl lying lifeless on the ground next to her had had dreams and aspirations for the future. A future she’d never get to see.
But every time a thought along these lines came along, a different thought came into Amelia’s head, one more powerful and important than the others. She had to do this, she had to live. That was it. Simple, in theory. In practice, though… yeah…
Amelia stood, silent and, if it wasn’t for an occasional shiver, completely still. She expected Anton to say something, but all he did was turn and walk away. Amelia stared at his back for a moment, before, turning away herself, and returned to her bag. She wanted, needed to get away from this place as soon as possible, but she had to deal with the cut on her arm first. As quickly as she could, she knelt down, opened her bag, and rummaged around for her first aid kit. Quickly opening it, she found a large adhesive bandage, then set to addressing her wound.
The mere sight of the small amount of blood on her arm immediately brought the image of Tania’s destroyed face to the front of Amelia’s mind. Angry and despondent, Amelia screwed her eyes shut, and put her hands to her head, muttering “Fuck… fucking hell…” Her eyes still screwed shut, Amelia felt for where her cut was, and managed to place the bandage over it.
Amelia sat there for a moment, the image of Tania’s face still hazily floating through her mind. Then, she grabbed her bag and flung it on her back. Without looking back, Amelia set back off the way she had come, with a new weight on her shoulders and a new objective to fulfil.

Silence. That was all that could be heard in the streets. The girl had apparently decided not to answer him. No big deal. It's not like Mike had any deaths on his conscience.
...Actually, that last bit was a lie. Mike felt incredibly guilty over Tania's death. He was standing right there! Surely he could have done something, right? The girl with the pickaxe may have swung the weapon that claimed Tania's life, but by just standing by, Mike felt that he was just as responsible for the loss of his comrade.
Anton turned around and began to leave. Mike hastily followed suit, wanting to get as far away from these streets as humanly possible. Anton was oddly silent, and one look at his face told the story of a teenage boy whose spirit had been broken. Everything was falling apart, and nowhere was safe anymore. Not with everyone else playing along with the Sheriff.
But Mike knew, no matter what, that he would have to stay strong for his friends. He had lost Tito and Tania, but he was not going to lose Anton.
As the duo departed, Mike took one last look at the rapidly decaying body of Tania Chell, the latest victim of the Sheriff's game. The girl that he didn't save.
I'm sorry, Tania.
