Alive Out of Habit

A basic three-room facility which once served the residents of the island. The waiting room is nothing to speak of, with only a few dust-covered chairs, an old lamp, and a stack of ancient magazines sitting on the table. The examination room is even blander, containing nothing except some expired medical supplies and an old examination table. The third room holds two rows of cots and was once used to quarantine sick patients.

Guy calmly listened to Keith's story, the truth is that he was more than happy to accept Keith. Perhaps that was naive. But, in a way not accepting Keith would be acknowledging that this game had ruined him, Keith had, Keith had saved Guy's ass several times and was someone that despite their playful banter Guy could depend on for several things; whether it be girl advice, help in a fight, or in this situation to save his life. This, he would call it brotherhood, was an integral part of Guy's personality was the fact that he was a loud mouth, it wouldn't be Guy Rapide if he didn't blast off with some poorly constructed -and often hit or miss- jokes, partly why he did it without discretion was because he had friends as ballsy as Keith. Or friends whom everyone wanted to be friends with like Kallie.

"Man Keith...seems like you've walked through more shitty situations than a hands on plumber," Guy said calmly, "Well man, with Kallie being all lovey-dovey, Maxie being all appolgetic and shit, and me being me and Alice being Alice," he smirked a bit, "Oh! By the way, this is Alice, a bit shy, but a pretty smart girl...just gotta get her to talk more."

It'd be a pity if we all died and she stuttered her last words...alright Guy, that was in poor taste even for you.

"So, I guess that brings us to a new plan, we gotta find Darnell and then we've got a pretty big group...he had a gardening tool or somethin' right? Man, I forget...I haven't seen that cat since the cottage, anyways, we just find Darnell and then I guess we go through our plan to get the fuck outta here," he chuckled a little bit, "Well it certainly doesn't sound impossible if I say it so...confidently and shit."
"My man got too familiar and I’d ended up having to whoop his ass, man, you know. Because he would step across the line. Habitually. He’s a habitual line stepper.” -Charlie Murphy

Keith quickly stuttered out an apology for presumptuously assuming that their group had been hostile, and quickly followed up by informing them all of the last few days he'd spent on the island. Kallie was listening, of course, but his words made her start thinking about how the past few days on the island had been for herself. She'd been relatively lucky, she realized, after Keith started talking about his group getting attacked time and time again by various "players" on the island.

Izzy Cheung... that's the girl Dodd was looking for, wasn't it? I guess he never found her.

She briefly wondered how Adam was doing, and Sean, and Andy, and Matt. She hadn't heard anything about them on the announcements, although Danya had mentioned that Ken Lawson (it seemed his name really was Burton Harris) had died. She felt a pang of guilt for Ken's death. It wasn't as though it had been their fault or anything, but they had left him alone at the cemetary, where he'd apparently met his end. If they'd stayed with him, maybe they could have stopped it.

Kristin Washington was dead too, she realized. It's not like she particularly cared that Kristin was dead, it was just strange coming to that realization. After all, she'd seen the girl alive and well at the cottage two days ago. Kallie briefly wondered if Kristin would be dead now if Ken... Burton... whatever his name was hadn't come in and wrecked the group that was forming at the cottage two days ago.

It was a funny thing to think about, and Kallie was quickly starting to second-guess the decisions she'd made on the island thus far. At practically the very beginning of the game, she'd been with Guy and Darnell, and she'd thrown it out the window over a trust issue. She'd spent the next few days wandering aimlessly through the jungle and bumping into various classmates that she didn't know, didn't like, or didn't socialize with. Somehow, she'd managed to come back into contact with Guy.

That, of course, brought her thoughts to Darnell, and where he was now.

She all but tuned out the introductions that were going on around her. Maxie seemed to be feeling left out of the conversation or something, because she suddenly spoke up, trying to introduce herself or something. It hadn't occurred to Kallie that Keith didn't know Maxie. In fact, it barely registered to her that Maxie and Alice were there. Alice had all but faded into the background, and after her loud outburst, Maxie had silenced herself as well.

Guy spoke up, introducing Alice to Keith as well. Talk quickly went from introductions to the next course of action, and Kallie simply found herself staring off into space, completely lost in thought. She didn't space out very often, but she was finding that it was occuring more and more during the time she'd been trapped on the island. She supposed it wasn't so strange to do... after all, everyone here had a lot to think about, assuming their mind hadn't deteriorated past reasoning and thought yet.

"Hedgeclippers," she spoke up out of nowhere, finally indicating that she hadn't been completely tuned out of the conversation, "Darnell had a pair of hedgeclippers. I haven't heard anything about him on the announcements, but maybe that's a good thing. At least we know he's not dead or running around killing people like a madman. Or at least... he wasn't, as of this morning."

Kallie bit her lower lip a bit as the words came out of her mouth. It was an unsettling thought. For all she knew, in the short time since the announcement had gone off, Darnell could have been killed.

"Finding him... sounds like a good idea," she reaffirmed after a moment.

But where do we even start?

She thought about it momentarily before finally speaking up again, "I'm sure he's probably with a group... he was never a loner, and he's a nice enough guy that he's probably out there sticking out his neck for some people. I mean... I wouldn't want to mess with him. He did gain a lot of notoriety from that tournament... maybe people'll leave him alone. But... all we know is that he's definitely not here, so we should probably start searching the buildings on the map."

Of course, there were a lot of locations on the map. Where to start? The closest place? Darnell not being in any of the announcements was good, but also bad in that they had no clue at all as to his whereabouts. He wasn't foolish enough to stay out in the open, Kallie was sure of that much.

"It's just up to you guys," she stated after a moment, "We've got a while before dark, so that should give us plenty of time to check out a couple places... hopefully."

At the same time, though, Keith, Guy, Alice, herself, and Maxie were quite the large group. Keith had the shotgun, and he seemed more than acquainted with using it... Guy had his gun, Kallie had the sword, which wasn't completely useless although it wasn't one of the best weapons around... Maxie had the meat hook, and Alice... did she even have a weapon? Kallie couldn't remember.

They had quite the arsenal on them, but a big group moving around would also be a big target if someone like the grenadier that had been following Keith's group around decided to pick on them. Really though, it wasn't safe to split up into groups. It didn't seem like they had any other choice but to move together.

As Kallie was thinking all of this, she once again found herself staring out into space... or more specifically, at the dew-stained grass at her feet.

"I'm glad you're safe, Keith," she spouted out suddenly, as though it were a random afterthought.

Neil Sinclair really hated the jungle. Not only has the heat made his crazy colored hair now flat and not styled, he had taken to getting lost. He wasn't the best when it came to directions, and he knew that. Matthew had wanted to go after Izzy, which was the girl that ran off after the grenade explosions right? Well, Neil agreed, because where else would they go. Though they never found her, and they spent their time just walking through the jungle.

The trip had been mostly in silence, as Neil looked back from time to time to make sure Matthew and Nick were with him. He didn't want to be alone. Not again. Neil had wondered during the trip how Evan was doing. Was he still alive? Neil had almost lost all hope back in the jungle before he ran into Matthew and Nick. During the second announcements when he heard that almost all of the members of SADD were now dead.

Except Evan. He was out there.

Neil wasn't exactly sure where they were headed. He wanted to find other people, or just a quiet place. He never explained to his new allies his plan yet. His plan for escape. Though he didn't feel it necessary to tell them right away like he did with past people. If they were going to stick around with him, they would know soon enough.

Neil stopped abruptly though when he realized there was a clearing up ahead. He dropped to a crouch and gripped his stick, which in hindsight was a useless weapon, but it at least made him feel better.

He saw a building up ahead. Neil placed his pack on the ground and rummaged through it until he took out his map. Looking at it, and after a good three minutes, he realized he was at the hospital. Placing the map back inside his pack, he turned his attention to the hospital. Were those bodies laying on the ground? Dead bodies?

Neil felt a growing fear in him. This wasn't safe. He needed to leave. He heard voices though. He saw some people at the doorway of the hospital. Who were they? It was impossible to tell from this distance. Though from the voices, there had to be quite a large group. A large group couldn't mean they were killing each other.

Take the risk?

Neil turned around, hoping Matthew and Nick would catch up and that they didn't get lost. He wouldn't put them in danger though.

Over the past two days, Neil, the rocker, went from being someone who no one would ever guess leading a group and putting his life on the line, to leading a group he cared more deeply about than his own band. If the group at the hospital was dangerous, then he would face that danger himself, and not put the two other members of SADD in danger.

He felt a sudden pang of regret that he didn't tell them about his plan of escape later. Only Evan really knew now. If Neil was to die by approaching this group, SADD would surely die with him. It didn't matter though. He needed people to make it work.

Neil stood up, and started to approach the group. His hands raised high, the stick he picked up at the shore in his right hands. He looked like an odd sight. Dirty jeans, dirty shirt, and a guitar on his back.

As he approached he recognized one of the boys. The boy with the shotgun. Neil had handed him his notebook explaining his plan of escape back at the jungle before the grenade went off. Neil felt safer, knowing that the boys group wasn't dangerous. His name was Keith right? Football player dude?

Neil Sinclair stopped short of the group, his hands raised high, and he said, "My names Neil Sinclair. I'm not playing. I'm with two other people."

Matthew found himself quite happy at the prospect of joining this S.A.D.D. group. It wasn't as if he was very popular, so a group like this would be perfect for him. He really needed some allies on the island, and the more people they could recruit to their cause, the better. Plus, the guy who was leading them, Neil Sinclair, was a guy who had made a few appearances in his book. He frowned at the fate of his once most treasured possession.

Matt had fallen a bit behind Neil and found himself coming up behind him as he was approaching a rather large group. One of which he immediately recognized as Kieth. Maybe that meant Izzy was here too. Matt jogged to Neil's side and quickly added.

"Keith! Is Izzy With you?? We were trying to follow..." But he stopped short when her realized that the girl standing directly beside Kieth was none other than the girl who had said she had no problem with killing him to save herself. Kallie Majors.

"K-Kallie?! This is a surprise..." He said shakily.

Maxie didn't know where the whole 'find Darnell' idea had come from - it seemed to have just arrived, simultaneously, in the heads of at least three of the other members of the group. Alice was the only one who hadn't said something pertaining to finding the guy, and that, Maxie assumed, was because she was very quiet. Maxie doubted she would raise a protest with the plan put forward. She didn't really like being forced to go along with the preconceived idea - pretty much based off the assumption that if the group members didn't agree, they could either meekly fall in line or try and gun it solo. Nobody had said as much, but Maxie knew the score. It was irritating, but for the time being, sticking with these people was a better option than trying to strike out on her own. Much as she hated to admit it, she was much safer with the others.

It had been good to vent her frustration on Ketih earlier, even if it wasn't the best idea in the world to give it to a potential ally with both verbal barrells. Maxie knew that, without the opportune outlet, she would be feeling a hell of a lot more pissed off right now. She couldn't afford that. Already she was forced to qwell vague feelings of anger towards Guy, even though Maxie knew that they were entirely unwarranted. How much could you fault somebody for the way that they speak? Why was it whenever he referred to her, it seemed vaguely insulting?

Maxie shook her head, trying to dispel the thoughts. Those kinds of ideas would get her into a whole lot of trouble if she voiced them: it would be about the worst idea in the world. Moreso, even, than the decisions leading to several of the infamous scrapes her and Lucas had got themselves into in the fallout of parties and concerts gone wrong.

And that was saying something, considering these 'bad ideas' often culminated in violence. There was even that one time when Lucas was grappling with that guy... what was his name? Andy... Alex - Adam! But it wasn't Dodd, the dude who won the original version of Danya's sick contest. It was a different Adam... big guy, massive in fact. The pair of them had fought, and Lucas had ended up tearing through the guy's lip with his damn finger!

That was just how bad an idea speaking her mind about the whole plan would be: bad enough that it would eclipse one of the most vicious fights Maxie had ever seen Lucas start - or finish. It hadn't been entirely conclusive, one of the few times, Maxie reflected, that her brother hadn't finished the job. Although considering the damage he inflicted on his opponent, Lucas could probably count that particular encounter amongst his list of victories, even if it had been cut short by others intervening and breaking the whole thing up. Big Adam sure as hell hadn't tangled with Lucas after that, though if that was coincidence Maxie had no clue.

Maxie was still thinking on this - smiling as she thought of old conflicts and brawls. Ones she had participated in, ones she had witnessed, and others - though rarer, which had been instigated on her behalf. They were infrequent though, Maxie fought her own battles most of the time: she wouldn't have it any other way. Maxie was contemplating these, enjoying the brief moment of peace with her memories, when the calm was shattered by a chance glimpse of a figure in the distance. Maxie's eyes narrowed as she tried to make out who it was that was approaching them. They didn't appear armed, but that was no reason not to be cautious.

When Maxie's eyes focused on you, a perfect word for the effect they had was 'piercing'. Perhaps it was just the particular way she glared - more likely it was due to the colour of the eyes themselves: a cold, ice blue that could be very disconcerting indeed. On the other hand, what kind of weapon was a 'kinda disturbing stare'? It wasn't like you could kill somebody with a look, and Maxie would rather be hightailing it away from an adversary with a gun than trying to creep them out by glaring at them.

Maxie put one hand to her meat hook, her eyes still locked on the as-of-yet unknown student, and quietly murmured to Keith and Kallie, both of which were still nearby. Although the newcomer didn't look dangerous, basing everything off looks was a recipe for disaster. His sudden appearence warranted a warning, at least.

"Guys, I don't wanna shock ya, but there's some dude walkin' t'wards us. He isn't lookin' dangerous right now - but y'never know," even as she said the words, Maxie relaxed - finally managing to identify the newcomer. It was Neil Sinclair, she'd attended more than a couple of the concerts he and his band - the Headless Heroes, and they weren't bad, pretty good in fact. But that wasn't the point. Maxie knew Neil a little better than most of the others in the group, although she wasn't sure if Neil would recognise her, but the important thing was that Maxie knew him well enough to feel sure he was a good guy. Perhaps she was being naive, but Maxie was certain Neil wouldn't be playing.

He confirmed it moments later when he spoke out, and Maxie let her guard down a little more. Still, the element lof suspicion remained. You couldn't trust anybody fully in SOTF, to do so was to invite death onto you, and as Maxie had firmly established in her own mind: she was not going to allow herself to die. Whether by escaping - or by playing, Maxie was going to survive.

The next arrival - coming in right after Neil, was less welcome. Matthew Wittany had a certain something about him, a strange air which Maxie couldn't entirely place. He was... strange, it was all Maxie could say for concrete. Perhaps it was the way he went around with that camera of his, taking snap after snap... It was true he was incredibly talented with the camera, but there was something intrusive about it all. Wittany's reaction at seeing Kallie just made Maxie more uncomfortable - there was some kind of backstory here, events which they weren't all privy to... Maxie decided to stay quiet for now, and watch how events unfolded succeeding the newcomers' arrival.

Keith Jackson's head was spinning, and he couldn't figure out whether or not it was blood loss or the constant, ever-changing set of circumstances that was destroying his equilibrium. He'd just gotten grenades tossed at him, he'd been pickaxed in the shoulder, and he'd finally met up with his friends. And now...

Here comes the fuckin' cavalry an' shit. 'Cept I don't really even want it...

Matt Wittany and that other kid, Neil...something or other? They'd managed to follow him away from the jungle, and Izzy was not with them, nor was Trey. The likelihood that they'd been hurt in the blast was high, but that wasn't a thought that Keith had to think right about now. The important thing was that he'd found his friends - his honest-to-God FRIENDS, and he needed to stay with them. As for the other two they'd met up with prior to his arrival; Maxie and Alice? They could stay, he supposed.

Of course, why he was suddenly making these decisions in his mind simply brought another thought to the forefront, and Keith realized that forming a larger group for the third time (albeit unintentionally) was really not a good idea. Without a whole lot of hesitation, Keith raised his shotgun at the newcomers.

"A'ight, folks. Here's how things're goin'. I've ended up standin' around with three big huge crowds already, an' things didn't end up all that well for me, if you catch me. Lately I've been mistaken for a golf ball, a vein of copper, and a...grenade depository. I'm thinkin' that all of these things have one thing in common. I'm standin' around in a crowd of people every time it happens. So I hope ya don't take too much offense an' all, but I think y'all should just be on your way. You two showed up later on last time, an' who knows if ya didn't bring that grenade bitch right to us."

Keith turned his head, more at his friends than anyone else, and sighed a bit.

"Sorry, guys. I'm not feelin' this big group shit. I'm willin' to wander 'round with you guys, if you'll have me. But if not, I've gotta go find Trey an' Izzy. I left 'em behind, and God knows if they didn't end up dead or hurt. Five's a decent number, but seven? Too much, dude."

Keith, still holding his shotgun at Matthew and Neil, waited for someone to react, to agree, disagree, hold a weapon back at him...

Man, I really hope nobody tries that third option...that night not end well, if ya feel me...

It was just like the cottage.

All of a sudden, people seemed to start creeping out of the woodwork. It was all just the same. She'd finally found one of the people she'd been relentlessly searching across the entire island for, and just as she'd finally run into them, people started coming from every direction, "not playing", wanting to form a group, an alliance. Her blue eyes darted toward Neil as he emerged from the shrubbery, and Kallie found herself shaking her head slightly.

It won't work... it just won't work...

Kallie Majors wasn't playing to win. No, she was playing to survive. If there was one thing she had come to learn during her time on the island, it was that large groups seemed to be wiped out at an incredible rate. The incident at the cottage had been proof enough of that. Nobody had attacked them, no... they had been lucky in that respect. However, what had happened had the potential to be so much worse.

Tension, distrust, fear. It had built up inside all of them, and she wound up abandoning her friends -- Guy and Darnell -- simply because she couldn't handle being with so many people. The surfer girl, Kristie or whatever her name was... Ken Lawson... Matt Wittany... they just seemed to keep pouring in in and endless cycle. Ken had been the first one to bring up that people might not have been as innocent as they appeared. In the end, it turned out that he was the liar. It was ironic, now that she thought about it.

The group had simply imploded on itself after Ken had vocalized his thoughts on trust and alliances. If Kallie hadn't slipped out the door when she did, if the group hadn't dispersed, the inevitable result would have been one of the members of that group turning on the others and trying to kill them all. And then there was the church, and what had happened there hadn't been that much better...

It seemed like every time Kallie found a group she'd be comfortable staying with, they were broken up when other students, recognizing the fact that she and her allies weren't playing, tried to force their way into the group. The problem with that was... Kallie wasn't up to looking out for other people. Kallie didn't care about other people. People... they were going to die, and the only thing that Kallie was really concerned about was keeping herself and her friends alive.

People who didn't fall into either of those categories? Well, they weren't really her problem.

It seemed so cruel to put it that way, but it was the simple truth. There were a handful of people that Kallie was determined to keep alive. People like this Neil kid and Matt Wittany? They just weren't on that list. Honestly, the only reason she had stepped in front of Alice when Maxie'd appeared outside the hospital was because Guy had made Alice his responsibility, and she felt that for that reason, Alice had become her responsibility as well.

Before she could voice her concerns, Keith raised his shotgun toward the newcomers, explaining to them that things would be better if they simply went on their way. To say she was surprised was a bit of an understatement. She had honestly expected to be the only member of their group to be apprehensive about gaining a too-large group. The fact that Keith quite obviously felt the same way came as somewhat of a relief to her.

"...Keith's right," she spoke up after a moment, her eyes moving from Neil to Matt and a slight frown forming on her features, "We're not really looking to take anybody else on. It would be best if you just left."

She felt somewhat guilty for saying it, even though she genuinely felt that way.

"Besides, Wittany... like I told you before, I'm... I'm only worried about my friends."

It was hard to even say words like that, no matter how true it may have been. In a way, she felt like she was the judge scrolling out her signature on his execution order. It made her cringe a little. But, the fact was, Kallie already knew that she wasn't willing to get herself hurt, maybe even killed, for people like Neil and Matt. People she barely even knew, and definitely didn't care about.

People like Guy... Keith... Darnell... well, those were entirely different circumstances.

"I think we should get out of here," she muttered quietly, more directing her words at Guy and Keith than anyone else.

Guy simply nodded as he grabbed Alice by the hand and started to walk away, dragging her with him as much as her guiding her away from the entire crowd. He simply smiled at the fact that him, Keith, and Kallie had the ability to work so well in conjunction with one another, stay on the same page, and most of all come up with similar judgments without even consulting each other. Guy. Guy wanted to survive, that was it, beyond that goal there where several subscripts: protecting Alice, protecting Kallie, helping Keith protect everybody, finding Darnell, and then eventually finding an escape -he still wasn't as disillusioned as everyone else seemed to be with the possibility of such a notion-...forming this big anti-SOTF group was simply not part of any plans of his.

"Well y'know," he simply said calmly, "I've come to see alliances sorta like fucking, the more people you add to the equation...the more awkward the whole thing becomes, y'know," he chuckled a bit, "Man...all these sayings are gonna kill me someday, anyway, I wish y'all the best, hope nobody kills you, I promise not to kill you, not playing, blah de blah de blah,"

He looked toward Kallie and Keith.

"I think we should be moseying on, ya dig?"

He ignored Maxie, mostly because, he didn't give a shit about her. Perhaps that was mean, but let's just face it, very few of Guy's classmates enjoyed his company and Guy enjoyed the company of even less. None of his friends had been killed, as long as that fact was still viable then Guy was fine and could not pay attention; selfish? Perhaps. Fact? Absolutely.

Alice? Alice was an entire conundrum into itself. He just, well he couldn't place what motivated to keep this outwardly useless person around, socially awkward, plain in looks -though Guy admitted she was cute in her own little way- and physically unimposing Alice was about as useful as a air conditioner was at the North Pole. But, still, Guy made sure to keep her in his site, make sure she left with him, and tried his best to make sure everyone in the group acknowledged her...even if that was a bit of a tough endeavor due to Alice being, well who she was.

But, he supposed that analyzing his relationship with a girl he had met a few days ago could wait till later.

To be honest, Alice was starting to become a feel a bit overwhelmed. She didn't remember any other point of time in her life where things were just...so...fast-paced. Everything was happening all at once... and to think Alice had been staggeringly relieved when that other person...Keith, finally lowered that shotgun. No sooner did things get cleared up between him and the rest of the group did ANOTHER boy appear out of nowhere it seemed. All the while, she remained behind Guy, acting as the silent observer, not knowing when to speak up....let alone if it was even her call to do so in the first place. It marvelled her, how these people seemed to know one another. Even if it was only by name, it amazed her how everyone was able to get so familiar with eachother so quickly...

People were making appearances, explanations were being hastily made...growing suspicions hung thickly in the air until the tension that was beginning to mount could have easily been cut with a knife. And all the while, Alice: dull, plain Alice...timid little Alice, once again faded into the part of background no one ever bothered to notice. It seemed that no matter where she was, whether living day-by-day quietly in the real world or running for her life in the world of SOTF, nothing really changed that much.

But it was alright, wasn't it? She was fine like this... she wasn't starving for attention, and being used to fading from the foreground, she didn't mind it too much. People like Guy and Kallie who were talkative...people like Keith and Maxie who were outspoken... Alice wasn't like any of them. She couldn't imagine what it would be like to be that bold, that daring enough to simply speak up at the first thought that came to mind. It seemed terrifying to her, to be honest... Better to just keep quiet and not get in the way, yes?

If she waited long enough, maybe they would all forget that she was even there...

At that moment, Alice was knocked askew and out of her thoughts as Guy took her hand and began pulling her away. Surprised as she was and naturally slow to react, she was unable to do anything else but follow him, stumbling and tripping slightly as she worked to keep up with him. Not quite knowing what to say, she blinked an inqury at him, though she did not have to wait long for an answer.

"I've come to see alliances sorta like fucking, the more people you add to the equation...the more awkward the whole thing becomes, y'know. Man...all these sayings are gonna kill me someday, anyway, I wish y'all the best, hope nobody kills you, I promise not to kill you, not playing, blah de blah de blah."

....Well that sort of made sense. Alice thought to herself quietly. Though that wasn't quite the anology she would have used. >.>;; But in any case...Alice was surprised when Guy had simply grabbed her hand and walked off with her like that. Not so much the fact that he was holding her hand....

Well actually, it was partially that... ->_>-

But really? Alice was just surprised. If he had wanted to leave, he could have easily up and gone without her...

It was while following Guy that Alice noticed something, and stopped.

"Um...Guy...?" she asked, in that usual timid-sounding voice. Pausing there and then, she fumbled with her words, "Um....your....I..."

Biting her lip, deliberating for a moment, she gave up on an explanation and instead set her daypack down and opened it up, pulling out various items as she rummaged through it.... Her stuffed rabbit, the wooden baseball bat she had been designated, the rations, the flashlight...until she finally found what she was looking for.

Pulling it out, she opened the first-aid kit, extracting a disinfecting cloth.

"...Your wound..." she murmured, a bit shyly, indicating towards it with a slight hand gesture. Noticing again that he was still shirtless, she turned red and looked away a bit. "Um I-you....you might have trouble reaching it...it needs to be treated properly...so, I g-guess I can..."

She tugged on the cloth between both hands a bit, looking rather uncomfortable as she stared at the ground. "...Or you can d-do it yourself, i-if you want...."

'Kay, enough's enough. This isn't workin'.

Once again, the situation just seemed to run right away from her. For the second or third time, Maxie was pushed into the background and isolated, it seemed, from the decisions being made. Obviously nobody gave a damn about her opinion, made painfully clear by the way the others were acting. Nobody looked to her for assurance, to check if she was okay, in fact, Guy appeared to be pointedly ignoring her. Maxie didn't belong here. This group wasn't about her, it was about Kallie and Keith and Guy - all looking for a mutual friend of theirs. Alice was the oddity, but it seemed as though Guy had taken the quiet girl under his wing. But that was the point, they shared a bond - they were friends, they hadn't just hooked up with each other by chance. Who was Maxie to them? To these guy's, Maxie was just an incidental arrival, probably seen as a temporary member of the group at best. If that was the way it was going to be though, then so be it. Maxie wasn't going to trail after them like some faithful dog following its master - that would be pathetic. Safety or no, Maxie wasn't going to be a fifth wheel, there simply because she was just useful enough not to be driven away.

Part of Maxie's ire came not just from the subtlties of movements - not looking at her, addressing the others as a group, but leaving her out, some of her anger stemmed from the words of the others. Keith was far from the worst offender, but the implication in what he said was clear. If it had been say, Maxie herself approaching the group at this point, she would have been turned away without a second thought. Like some kind of sick kid's game: 'Sorry, maximum of five people in a group, the rest of you have to strike out on your own and hope you don't get killed,'. It didn't matter whether or not Maxie considered the newcomers to be trustworthy, it was purely the principles Keith had based his refusal on. She was acceptable to him because it didn't bring the group numbers too high, but any others had to be turned away at gunpoint? It wasn't that he trusted her, it was that he was paranoid about others. Perhaps Keith had justification for that - based on his past experiences with groups, but who was to say that a group of his friends wouldn't encounter the exact same problem? Guy had flat out ignored Maxie, and considering that he was annoying her already, that didn't really help matters much.

The worst, though, was Kallie. On the face of things, what she had said was perfectly reasonable: if she didn't want a bigger group, then that was that. Kallie was concerned about her friends, again, nothing wrong with that. The context, however, was what moved Maxie to action. Kallie hadn't been 'looking' to take Maxie on, it had just happened, and what with Keith's arrival, she had somehow just been intergrated into the group. Again, it was that strange children's game, 'No room for you, this group's full,' Maxie didn't doubt Kallie wouldn't hesitate to dump her once they found Darnell. After all, that would mean there was six people, one too many evidently, and why would she look any further for a person to dump than Maxie? Certainly not a friend of her's, and with a reputation as a delinquent to boot. Nope, Kallie wouldn't hesitate to throw her out on her ear. The most important part though, was when Kallie mentioned she was only worried about her friends. For Maxie, it didn't get any simpler than that. They weren't friends, end of story.

Time t'speak up.

"Ya 'know what everyone? This isn't gonna' stick," Maxie said this loud enough that all of the people in the group, and probably Neil and Matt could hear her. She didn't care - they would figure things out for themselves even if they didn't hear what she had to say. "I'm not a friend of any one of ya," she told them all frankly, which was entirely true. Before today, she hadn't even spoken with some of those around her, let alone become close to them.

"Ya know me, sure, but we're not buddies. Tell me now if ya wouldn't be refusin' ta let me inta the group if it was me instead've Neil. Don't deny that. It's true," Maxie swept them with her gaze, looking from Guy, to Kallie, to Keith.

"Fact is, ya don't give a damn about me, I just happened ta turn up when the mood wasn't too hostile," Maxie smiled wryly. "Don't get me wrong, ya want to find a friend of yours, and I think that's admirable. Takes a brave person ta think about someone else when ya might get killed at any instance. I never wanted a group, just a little security, maybe get some good sleep in - shifts are always better after all. Figured you'd all know what ya doin'. But that isn't fair, not really. So I'm gonna' make th'whole 'trust' game easier for y'all and bow out now."

Maxie looked right, then left, then headed off - away from the hospital and the treeline Neil and Matt had emerged from. "Good luck with findin' your buddy," Maxie added as she departed.

Alone again. Just the way I like it.

Neil was glad to see that Matthew had came up behind him. Where was the other boy though? Hopefully he didn't get lost. Neil was hoping for a friendly group but he didn't get that. This was something Neil couldn't understand. From his very first day on the island Neil was singing songs against Danya with two other students on a beach smashing cameras.

Now he was facing the barrel of a shotgun from a jock. Keith was his name right? Yeah, definitely the guy from the jungle where the explosion went off. He told Neil and Matthew they didn't want anybody else. If only he understand, if only he knew what Neil had to offer. He was with that girl, Izzy, and that wrestler, Trey right?

Neil tried to think of his next words carefully, not really afraid of the shotgun because in his mind he knew Keith wasn't going to just pull the trigger, but at the same time Neil kept his hands raised high to show he wasn't planning anything. Then another girl, Kallie, she also told Neil and Matthew that he needed to move on.

Neil should move on. He should just keep walking. But something inside of him stuck fast. No. He wasn't about to give up right now. He had to at least try to spark some passion, some fight in them. He wouldn't let the same thing happen again like it did to his old group. He refused to let that happen again. Neil Sinclair would beat the system, he would escape and he had a plan.

Neil watched then as Maxie left. He knew her, he saw he at concerts sometimes, and remembered seeing her at one of his own concerts once.

He then watched as a boy, his name was Guy right? Grabbed another girls hand and started to walk away.

Neil looked at Keith and said, "Man, that girl you were with. Izzy right? She was ok after the blast. She ran way though. That other boy, I don't really remember what happened to him, after the blast was kind of a haze and he sort of disappeared."

Neil looked at Keith and Kallie and glanced at his partner Matthew.

Now or never.

Neil slowly started to lower his hands and said, "If you want us to leave, fine, we'll leave. I just got to show you something first. If you still want us to leave, I'll go on my way."

Neil slowly went into his pack and took out his notebook, raising it high to be sure to show Keith that he wasn't taking out a weapon. It was wise not to scare the boy with the shotgun.

Neil flipped to a blank page and using his pencil quickly wrote the truth:

I have a plan to escape. It needs willing people for it to work though.

Neil then tossed it between Keith and Kallie and said, "It's just a song I wrote about Danya."

Keith didn't look down at the notebook that landed at his feet. Instead, he continued to point the shotgun at the two newcomers; Matthew and Neil. While Keith didn't want to come off like a dick, he wasn't about ready to take on more people, especially people he didn't trust. Not after the experiences that he'd managed to have.

"Sorry, bud, but yer' kind of music just isn't my style. I don't exactly feel like I'm in a singin' kinda mood, yeah?"

As he pointed the gun at the two, he saw one of the others, the girl who'd yelled at him when he'd first come in - she had disappeared off into the jungle. That was good, it was less people for Keith to worry about. Well aware that he probably wasn't thinking clearly and was tempered by his ringing ears and trickling shoulder, Keith silently hoped neither of these two would do anything dumb.

Firin' this shotty ain't gonna be a barrel o' monkeys, 'specially not with a bum shoulder. So don't make me do it, song-man. Just take yer creepy buddy an' get the hell outta here...

While internalizing his wishes gave him a bit of a reprieve from the ominous feelings that were clouding the area, Keith was still well aware of his precarious positon. Gesturing with his head towards the jungle, Keith glared at the two in front of him.

"Well, whatchya waitin' for, Bono? A personal invitation? I can't make this any clearer. We ain't lookin' for a hand-holdin' circle-jerk. Which means ya gotta take yer buddy and go lookin' for flowers'n happiness somewhere else. Now take off, or I'm gonna start losin' my grip on reality, an' start thinkin' y'all are tryin' to shoot fireballs at me or somethin'."

Glancing at Kallie, who was standing relatively close to him, he kept his grim look, but hoped that she would indeed stand with him. Keith didn't want to shoot at these people, but if they called his bluff, he may not have much of a choice. And even then...could Keith kill someone in cold blood? That was a question that he'd have to figure out on his own, though he seriously hoped that the answer was no.

"Yeah Kallie... You're only worried about yourself, you mean..." Matt didn't mean for that to come out as harsh as it did, but since day one he'd been attempting to convince this girl that there was more to it than protecting yourself. She might as well be a player.

"I'm getting real tired of listening to your shit Kallie. People are dieing... If we don't band together... if we don't, then there's not going to be anybody left for you to protect... Because sooner or later, someone's going to come out of the woodwork, and they're going to attack you. Who knows... maybe you all might survive... maybe not... The truth is... eventually one of you is going to die... Are you ready to handle that... Can you handle one of them dieing? Can you kill someone who tries to kill them?" He stared at her for a while, then turned his back when Kieth shrugged off Neil's final attempt.

"Neil... they won't listen to us... We're better off just leaving... after all, we wouldn't want to disrupt their last moments together." He said to his companion and began to walk off. He didn't even bother to look back at the girl he spent all of day one and most of day two following. He just couldn't care less anymore. Kallie was a lost cause... she couldn't be saved. And in Matt's opinion, that was a very sad thing.

Neil oddly wasn't surprised when Keith didn't read the notebook and told him and Matthew to leave. It seemed that SADD would be difficult to form again. Though it would be worth it. The group didn't need people like Keith and Kallie anyways. They were only worried about their own survival. They were only worried about today. Neil was worried about tomorrow. In his mind, he only had two choices. Escape or die trying. Because if he just focused on surviving, odds were he would die by a player.

No matter what, even if he did win this game, he would have to live with the fact that his friends were dead. So for Neil Sinclair, if he was going to die, he was going to die trying to beat this game.

Because that is what this is right? A game. Every game can be cheated. Just like taking some extra cash if you're the banker in Monopoly, there has to be a way to gain the upper hand in this game. Neil would find that upper hand.

He raised his hands high and slowly approached Keith and said, "I'm just getting my notebook don't worry."

Neil bent down and picked up the notebook. He straightened out and slowly backed up. He looked Keith then Kallie in the eyes. His eyes finally rested on Keith's and Neil said, "I know I don't know you, but as far as I can tell, you're just trying to survive like me. So good luck, and I hope we meet again, hopefully under better circumstances."

Neil felt like he was pleading through his eyes for Keith to change his mind.

He wished he could just tell Keith that the had a plan to escape. That with his help they could go home together.

Neil couldn't though. So he turned and caught up to Matthew, and walked away from the hospital, a little more disheartened.

In an ideal world perhaps Guy Rapide was paying attention to Neil Sinclair's call to arms, in an ideal world perhaps Guy Rapide would've listened to him, but there was one thing that caused him to zone out almost completely. Stare mouth agape and go into what would be later billed as Guy's 'What the fuck am I thinking' place, as he stared at Alice who reached into her pack to pull out a disinfectant strip and a nice piece of gauze for patching up his wound; looking at the shoddy clean up and and patching of his wound (the Band-Aid was already peeling off), he noted that perhaps Alice's idea of fixing it up held some innocence to it.

In the many paradoxes of Guy's mind their lied a special category made for his relationships with women, for example it was perfectly reasonable for Guy to want his women shorter than he is (a very ambitious request), but the moment that a girlfriend wanted a guy taller than he was, well it was something of an insult. This particular paradox was brought up right now, if Alice or Kallie where to have hurt themselves, Guy would have no problem helping them patch up their wounds. Call it sexism, but relying on Alice or any woman for anything seemed like a sign of weakness to Guy, though perhaps that explains his history with women.

Guy's first sexual experience happened when he was twelve years old. He and his friends became obsessed with losing their virginity and Guy being who he was, well he was a renowned trash talker. When mostly all of his friends couldn't manage to get their girlfriends to take off their training bras, Guy decided to say that he could have sex by the end of the month. He even put fifty bucks on it, his friends thought it was the easiest fifty bucks they ever made. After a month of saving up money Guy made a spectacle of going into a whorehouse in downtown Paris. All the prostitutes where black and with nothing more than an acknowledgement of his presence the owners sent up this little twelve year old boy to a rather dirty room. A few minutes later a middle aged lady with a little pot belly came in and asked him if he was ready, unfortunately Guy was far too scared and blurted out, "I'm sorry I can't do this!" and promptly left the room.

In his defense how could anyone perform under those circumstances? Going to a strange place and ending up with a weird person with absolutely no connection to you and having to pay for it? Expanding further upon that his relationship with Alice had many parallels with that strange story, the strange place was the island, Alice was the weird person he had no connection to, and involving himself further could very indeed endanger his life. Really, Guy chalked most of this confusedness up to a mixture of hormones and the realization that he could die at any moment, really he had similar feelings with Kallie the first day (before he met Alice). Guy accepted that as a male he was almost bound to make assumptions and predictions about the female sex that weren't true, now that there was a possibility that his life could end in the next few days...well it was obvious that he was being a bit wishful with the ideal that Alice would even be concerning herself with matters such as these.

"Yeah," he muttered shyly, "I'd 'preciate that."

And now he was sounding so unlike himself, too needy, too shy. Well, fuck it, maybe some girls where in need of a needy shy guy.

And then he heard the local stalker Matthew Wittany go on this rant about how one of them where going to die eventually and that we should've just let people into their group. Quite frankly, fuck that, if we're all going to die there was no need in getting the responsibility of someone he could careless abouts life. You know? It's just like, well fuck it, it's just like expecting for a girl to fuck a guy she has no relationship with just because she might run the risk of being a virgin.

Alright Rapide, life threatening situation, quit thinkin' 'bout girls and fuckin'

And then he realized he had left his shirt in the hospital as his eyes widened and he looked down at his sweating thin form. He simply shook his head as he once again grasped Alice's hand.

"Mind movin' this to the lobby? I kind've left the top half of my wardrobe there like some sorta stoner."
