Motion Isn't Meaning

Start of B19

It isn't much now, but at one time, this airfield was the life of the island. It contains a sole landing strip in the middle of an overgrown field, and the solitary air control tower nearby looms menacingly over the island. The remains of a downed aircraft sit nearby, having crashed long after the island base had been abandoned.

This was getting rather ridiculous. When Matthew Wittany appeared Corbin wanted nothing more to be gone with his group on their way to the cliffs like planned. Corbin was about to say "yes" to Khrysta that he was ready. He was ready to get away from this airfield, away from the dead body near them, away from the danger that seemed to keep lurking.

Though it was like he couldn't escape it. Once again, it appeared. Matthew Wittany. The photographer standing before the group telling them not to shoot that he wasn't playing. It could very well be true. Then again, didn't they just kill a girl? Trust seemed harder and harder every minute here. Corbin did what a day's worth of experience on the island taught him to do.

He raised his M16 at the boy and his trigger went inside the trigger guard and rested against the trigger. He was glad the boy had his hands above his head. That was good. Corbin glanced to his group then said to the newcomer, "Keep your hands up there man. I'm not going to shoot, I'm definitely not playing this game, but some recent events have got me a little jumpy when it comes to trusting people."

Corbin tilted his head to the dead girl nearby. "Understand? So first why don't you tell us what weapons you're carrying."

Having kept quiet through the entire exchange, Mary McKay simply sat and listened. Paul Smith - she still trusted him about as far as she could throw him, and the others, while they'd saved her life, seemed to be a little more accepting of him than she felt. Of course, it could just be her, but she felt uneasy around the boy. Paul had basically freely admitted that he was willing to play the game and expected them to shoot first and ask questions much, much later. This wasn't something that Mary felt all that comfortable with, but she wasn't about to abandon her group - that would mean virtual suicide for herself, and her unborn child.

As a new arrival auddenly poked his head out from nowhere at all, she felt herself tensing up a little, surprised at the intrusion (if one could call it that), and recognizing the face immediately. Matthew Wittany was a photographer for the school paper, and she was familiar with his work. Something about the boy had always made her uneasy, and she had figured him for the type that ends up stalking women by installing secret cameras within their houses and watching them change. He just seemed the type.

Nonetheless, he seemed to be ambivalent and harmless enough, but so had Dan Wolfe, and she'd known him. Slightly frustrated, Mary knew that the longer they stayed around, the more the likelihood of them being joined by someone as menacing as Dan had seemed to be.

Or even Daniel himself might return, and bring in the cavalry, or something like that. Goodness, that wouldn't be very good at all, now would it?

As she watched Corbin address Matt and demand to know what kind of weapons he had, she began to feel uneasy about the whole situation in general. Perhaps it was the newer arrivals in the area, perhaps it was just paranoia, but Mary suddenly had the want; rather, the need to get out of there. Shuffling over to Khrysta, Mary subtley tapped her on the arm, enough to get her attention but not enough to cause a stir amongst the others.

"I think we need to leave...I don't trust Matthew Wittany, he scares me. He's a total creeper. I don't know about Paul, either, but...Khrysta, we need to leave..."

Mary hoped that the urgency in her whisper would be enough to convince Khrysta (who was essentially the unofficial leader of their little posse, like hell if she would believe that it was Paul) to get them going. Night would fall soon, and they needed a place to shelter themselves and get some rest. She just hoped that they'd end up getting there in one piece.

Matthew almost puked at the bloodied body of the girl. This wasn't fair. He didn't ask for this. He recognized some of the members of the group immediately. Mary McKay was a nice enough girl, but she seemed sort of distressed. Not that he blamed her after her group undoubtedly killed the girl soaked in blood and full of bullet holes. Corbin Arlen (whom was pointing a gun at him) Seemed okay in school, but at the moment, Matt didn't want to judge. And then there was Paul Smith. Matt had his Sophomore Editor do an entire story on Paul earlier that year. She wrote an amazing article, and, from what he read, Paul wasn't that great a guy. The second girl he didn't recognize at all. Not that it really mattered though.

"Umm.... A-All I ha-have is a b-b-bike chain... It's in my p-p-pocket." He smiled nervously. "C-c-could you put the g-gun down? P-p-please?"

What were you doing Corbin? Pointing your gun at this kid who didn't even do anything? This isn't like you. Though hasn't experience on the island taught you to not let your guard down? What to do. What to do.

Corbin glanced back at his group, he didn't like where this was going. They were becoming to large as a group, and Corbin wanted to trust the newcomer. He seemed scared, and he claimed to only have a bike chain. So what now? Do they leave him here? Take them into their group?

Corbin lowered his gun so it wasn't pointing at Matthew but he kept his finger rested on the trigger. Just in case right Corbin? Could you pull the trigger though? You told everyone you could. You want to impress your group right?

Corbin looked at Matthew and said, "I'm not going to shoot unless you do something to make me shoot. Don't worry man." Corbin looked around, half expecting more people to show up. Corbin, eyes still on Matthew, said to Khrysta, "Well, what do we do now?"

In the end, Corbin still saw Khrysta as his leader, as the one who would trust above all else, and follow above all else. In the beginning he had saw her mainly as just someone to follow, to keep him alive. Her wits and his weapon made a good enough alliance where they could keep safe and survive.

That's what they did best. Survive. Even with the newcomers he trusted Khrysta to make the right decisions to keep them alive. Though, that symbiotic relationship he had with her in the beginning he felt changing. He felt a true partnership with her.

Would he risk his life for Mary? Maybe, probably, yes. It was who he was.

Would he risk his life for Paul? Depending on the circumstance, maybe again. Paul had saved his life. Corbin owed him one.

Would he risk his life for Khrysta? Yes. Hands down. No maybes about it.

Matthew Wittany.

Paul Smith wished the name had any significance, but sad to say it didn't and all the while he couldn't help but shake his head as he let his gun rest at his side. He was getting comfortable with the group, but it was almost sad as he wished he could've been involved in this game last year...at least then he would have friends of his own to get through this. His old clique. Melanie, Montezzo, the whole Beneath the Hands of War group...sure the further he went back the more his ex-girlfriends grew, but he would've at least had friends to go out with.

Things where different among the people who had known Paul since middle school, sure he was always wild, but they had always viewed Paul as someone worth trusting, if it wasn't too much to say...well last year Paul was to the class of '06 what Adam Dodd was to the Barry Coleson class of '07...that is to say a well liked and valued friend to most. All this game was doing? All this game was doing was reminding Paul of his own aloofness.

He stared at the dead girl and was reminded all too quickly of how much value he had in the eyes of his classmates, while they all had no value in his eyes. All too quickly the largest advantage a lot of would be killers had where replaced as a large disadvantage in Paul's mind. With that said, he'd go with the flow, if things turned bad he could always leave...or shoot the place up.

Nah, that'd be ridiculous.

"Khrysta," he paused, "Before this turns into a soap box social, I suggest we be moving on the ol' dusty trail."

To say that Khrysta was slightly annoyed by the sudden appearance of Matthew Wittany as they were about to leave the airfield might have been a bit of an understatement. The fact was, they had been at the airfield for a very, very long time, and Khrysta was more than a little bit ready to leave. This boy emerging from the woodwork was nothing more than a hinderance to their progress, and Khrysta simply wasn't in the mood for those sort of hinderances.

On cue, Corbin pointed his gun toward Matt and began questioning him, asking him what sort of weapon he was carrying. A bike chain, or so he said. Khrysta wasn't very well acquainted with Matt Wittany. She knew that he was a photographer for the yearbook or the paper or something, but beyond that, she knew nothing about him, sans rumors that had been spread around the school, and how accurate were they?

Mary was quietly expressing her desire to leave the area, and soon, and Khrysta couldn't help but agree with the other girl. Mary's insistance that Matt was a creep was all Khrysta needed to hear. Whether or not this was true in actuality didn't matter. The fact was, she didn't want people with them that made the rest of the group feel uncomfortable. She had let Paul in, but...

Her eyes trailed over to Adwin's corpse for just a moment. Paul had been an exception, seeing as they'd have had to fend off a quite deranged girl if not for him riddling her with bullets as she attacked Corbin. But this guy... he didn't exactly have much to offer. He wasn't exactly the most physically imposing figure around, and if he was telling the truth about his weapon, Lady Luck wasn't on his side at all.

Corbin seemed to want to give Matt a chance, though it didn't exactly surprise Khrysta. That was just the sort of person that Corbin was. He wanted to give everyone a chance, to believe that everyone had some potential for good inside of them. While that may have been the case, Khrysta simply didn't want to be bogged down by any more people than they already had. Survival was a priority, and she had decreased their chances by taking Mary in.

Of course, Mary was more or less counter-balanced by Paul.

Wittany... it wasn't that Khrysta thought he was a bad guy or anything. She didn't even know him. The thing was, he just didn't look like he had anything he could add to the group. If nothing else, Mary had a positive outlook and optimistic attitude to give. Paul might have been a chauvenistic, arrogant son-of-a-bitch, but he had at least proven that he was willing to defend them. Corbin... well, Corbin was just Corbin.

Suddenly, it seemed like all three of her current allies were turning toward her for answers. Mary wanted to leave, Corbin was waiting on her to give the word for what to do, and Paul, too, had made his opinion on the matter known. She turned toward Matt, a placid expression remaining on her features, and sighed quietly. She didn't really feel guilty for what she was about to say, though she probably should have.

"Sorry, we aren't looking for dead weight."

It sounded cold and cruel, but it was the simple truth of the matter. Paul and Mary were right, it was way past time to leave the airfield. Their destination before the interruption had been the sea cliffs, and Khrysta wasn't going to let a little deterent like Matt stop them from getting where they were going. The sun was about to go down, so they needed to move fast. They didn't have time to deal with another student.

"Let's get out of here already."

Corbin watched as his group began to leave. Well, that sucked for Matthew, but they had the right idea. Corbin was getting used to Khrysta's rather blunt coldness, but it never ceased to cause him to cringe inside. He wanted to say sorry to Matthew, he wanted to say something. Though he knew he wouldn't. In a game like this, if you were leaving someone, probably to die, was saying sorry even acceptable?

Corbin looked at the kid and said, "um, yeah, good luck man." Corbin nodded at him as a sign of respect. At least the only respect he could give considering the circumstances.

Corbin turned around and followed his group, glancing back once at Matthew.

Corbin mumbled under his breath, "Sorry man. Maybe some other time."

So with that, Corbin was once again on his way, towards a future that was unknown.

Mary said very little as the other two began to leave, and quietly thanked heaven that she was managing to get away from this place - something about the air field gave her the shivers, and to be rid of it was something she was glad for.

Matt sighed when the group began to leave. The girl he assumed was their leader said that they weren't looking for dead weight. Somehow, she reminded him almost eerily of Kallie. Matt watched as the group began to head off, and he once again felt alone and vulnerable. Maybe that's what he was meant to feel. All alone. He was used to it. No one ever seemed to care if he happened to be scared. If he wanted a friend. He was tired, and hungry, and he really wanted to feel safe. But he knew it was impossible.

"God... Why does this always happen to me?" He sighed and began to walk in a different direction from the group, hoping he could find somewhere to rest his head for a little while.
