Bunny did not like the rain. It messed her hair up and soaked her through to her skin and made everything all soggy and damp and uncomfortable and was generally just a totally miserable experience. It was never a tropical shower here in Denton, either, all warm and relaxing, like stepping into a hot shower. No, it was cold and windy and grey, and gave people colds and just generally sucked.
She sneezed, sniffed, wiped her nose, and made a little noise of discontent. She did not want to come down with a cold, not today. Not ever, if she could help it, but she was due to record her vlog today, and she doubted people would want to hear her with a blocked-up nose. If she had been in a better mood, she probably would have appreciated the irony of getting a cold straight after leaving a hospital. But she wasn’t, so she didn’t.
Bunny huffed, and looked up the street, stepping back as a car zoomed along at far-too-fast mph, making sure she didn’t get soaked head to toe as it splashed through a puddle. There was, of course, no sign of the bus. She couldn’t wait for it to turn up fifteen minutes late along with five others. It had to be some sort of conspiracy, bus drivers working in cahoots to turn up early when you were running late and never show up when you had to get to an important meeting, spreadsheets detailing every citizen’s regular bus routes and what days they took the bus, and secret codes that they’d communicate to each other with over the radio.
Or maybe Denton’s public transport system was just garbage. That was an option too, she guessed.
Gripping tightly to her frog face umbrella in her left hand, Bunny dug about in her coat pocket with her right, searching for her phone. She pulled it out, Riza Hawkeye charm swinging in the breeze, and after entering her password, tapped the app for Neko Atsume. If she was going to have to wait even longer, she could at least check to see how her kitties were doing.
Given her luck today, she was almost entirely certain she’d be greeted by the sight of Tubbs sitting next to an empty bowl of food.

[Kitty Gittschall: Pregame Start]
"Are you fucking kidding me?"
Kitty felt her clothes soak with rain as a strong gust of wind rose from underneath her umbrella, forcing it up and out of her hands. She ran after it, snatching it up just before it hit the ground. Another gust of wind threatened to steal the umbrella from her again. She tightened her grip, pulling the umbrella closer towards her.
"Fwoomp!"
The umbrella's canopy flipped up, the ribs of the undercarriage pushed to their limit by the gust of wind. Kitty shouted again, this time more of an unintelligible yelp, and turned the umbrella toward the whipping wind. The canopy resettled back into place, and she quickly raised it back up over her head, the red canopy now looking more maroon than cherry.
Only a little bit more to go until the bus stop, she told herself, teeth chattering, Just a bit further. She could almost see it from here. Someone else with a frog umbrella (Cute, I guess?) had just made their way next to the bus stop. They didn't seem to be having any problems with the wind. Kitty chalked her earlier encounter up to her own weakness. She sniffed the rainy air and walked forward, slower and more calculated now.
As she got closer, the girl's face came more clearly into view. Bunny, standing under a frog, and Kitty approaching her, the rain smelling like wet dog, too. When Kitty made it to the bus stop, she saw that Bunny was lost in a game on her phone. Something with cute cats, or whatever. A bunny under a frog with a cat caring for cats with dog air all around.
Yeah, that was enough animal puns for one day.
"Lovely day, isn't it?" Kitty said, her eyes still on Bunny's phone.

Brigid stood still at the crosswalk, waiting for the light to change. She quietly breathed in and out, waiting for the light to change. She wasn't too bothered by the storm around her. Granted, the rain was heavy and the wind was strong, but she did leave the house in a rain jacket with a hood, and made sure to wear shorts. She had figured it'd start to rain when she was doing her jog, but she didn't think it would be this heavy.
The light changed, and Brigid began to jog across the crosswalk. She was ready to call it quits for her work out today. She had done enough running, and now she had gotten her share of running in environmentally challenging scenarios. She wouldn't be doing that in track meets, but maybe it'd matter someday. She wasn't sure when though.
She jogged to the nearest bus stop and slowed her pace down as she approached it. She could see two other girls there, one with a frog umbrella, and the other with a red one. Brigid took her place in the vicinity of the bench and stood facing the road. She was sure a bus would come along soon. Well, good news. Tubbs hadn’t decided to wander into her yard in the past half hour or so, and the two bowls of Deluxe Tuna Bitz were still sitting there, inviting any kitties to stay a while in her yard.
Unfortunately, the price for that was that it had been a month since Bunny had put down the Tower of Treats and the Fairy-tale Parasol, and neither Sapphire nor Jeeves had made an appearance since then. Bunny frowned and clicked her tongue, then attempted the good old, tried and tested tactic, of closing the app and refreshing it.
She briefly wondered how many other people were still playing Neko Atsume. There had been a period last year where everybody and their grandma and their grandma’s pet lizard had been playing it, and the world had felt a little bit brighter and lovelier. And now it seemed like everyone had moved on to something else; Flappy Bird 2: The Pipe Strikes Back, or something like that. Bunny didn’t understand why. It was a game about cats! Cute little cats! There was no way to lose; there was only cats! And now that it was a couple years old now, it was positively retro in terms of mobile games, which made it even cooler!
Bunny shook her head as the app reloaded. Sometimes she just didn’t understand people. She also didn’t understand why Sapphire and Jeeves were still refusing her delicious offering of tuna and gravy. Seriously, what was taking them so long? What exactly could a kitty be doing that meant they couldn’t relax under a frilly lace parasol for a little bit?
Apparently, they could be getting caught out in the middle of a rainstorm, that was what.
Bunny looked up from her phone, and flashed her most winning smile at Kitty. She wasn’t sure what cosmic forces had aligned for there to be both a Kitty and a Bunny in the same class, but she sure as heck wasn’t complaining. It was always great when they had to work together for some project; they just needed another student to change their name to ‘Puppy’ for the trifecta to be complete.
“Yeah, it’s just peachy!” Bunny replied. “I just love feeling cold and damp all day and worrying that some overcompensating dickhead in a BMW is gonna splash through a puddle next to me!”
As if to prove her point as to just how delightful the weather was, the wind suddenly picked up, blowing Bunny’s hair about like tumbleweed, and threatening to rip the umbrella out of her hands and sending it spiralling into the sky, forcing her to put her phone back into her pocket and grab hold of the brolly handle with both hands.
“See? Who needs sunshine when you can have weather like this?”
As Bunny spoke, another girl had approached the bus stop, someone who looked vaguely familiar through the pouring rain. For some bizarre reason, the girl had decided she didn’t need no stinking umbrella, just a jacket and a hood. Bunny imagined she was feeling quite foolish right now, soaked through and chilled to the bone. What better time than now to offer the olive branch?
“Hey!” Bunny called out to the new girl. “Do you wanna share an umbrella? It's kinda damp out!”

When the gust had gone by and the umbrella had settled down, she looked back over at Bunny, finding that she'd slipped her phone away, along with any sense of shape she'd strung into her hair. Another quip, about the weather, as if there wasn't anything else to talk about. Little talks. She came up with a quip of her own, and fired back.
"Curtains match the drapes, I guess."
Bunny greeted another girl. Kitty hadn't even noticed her arrival. She had no umbrella, for some strange reason. Bunny was offering to share her own, which was more than enough for Kitty to work with. Brigid stood in place, balancing on the heels of her feet as she waited for the bus. She could feel the pitter patter of the rain bouncing off the hood of her jacket. Fortunately, it was waterproof, so she wasn't too damp. Her legs were a bit wet, but she wasn't bothered too much. She just had to hope the bus would come soon.
One of the girls, the one with the umbrella, then spoke to her, asking if she wanted to share the umbrella. Brigid shook her head.
"Oh, um, I'm fine," she said, tugging the hood slightly forward, covering more of her bangs.
Brigid looked at the girl and the other next to her. She flashed a small smile.

A rather befuddled look crossed Bunny’s face as Brigid declined her incredibly generous offer to share an umbrella. She looked at the girl, standing there in the middle of a downpour, wind attempting to tug at her clothes and raindrops slinking off of her hood, and she saw the most miserable sight in the world, jacket be damned. She honestly couldn’t understand how anyone would want to stand out in the rain if they didn’t have to. The girl was gonna wind up with a cold and a runny nose and a constant sneeze and it was gonna be all her own fault.
Bunny briefly glanced at Kitty, shrugged her shoulders, then looked back at the soon-to-be-drowned girl.
“Suit yourself!” she called back. “The offer stays open as long as the umbrella does!”
She giggled, before turning back to face Kitty, lightly adjusting the umbrella, making sure it covered both herself and the other girl.
“So, what brings you out here on a day as delightful as today? Normally I wouldn’t be caught dead in this weather, but my mom just had an operation, and I wanted to visit her.”
Bunny briefly glanced at Kitty, shrugged her shoulders, then looked back at the soon-to-be-drowned girl.

This girl had a nice smile too. Not like Bunny's, not in the slightest, but still decently nice to look at. Something strange was lying behind it, though. People don't just turn down umbrella offers nowadays, do they? It confused Kitty, but she could work with it - Bunny was tilting her umbrella over anyway.
"I'm just coming back from the library," she explained, "Took out a book on Picasso, just some light reading for the weekend. Sorry to hear about your mom, though. Everything good?"
Small talk like this was not her forte. In a normal conversation, Kitty could cut right to the point, get all her feelings out right then and there, and feel fine about it. Like she was doing everyone a favor by getting right to the gist of it. With small talk, there was no gist to get to. There was nothing to do but spin her wheels, wait for time to pass, and deal with whatever came next. Whatever move she made, she ended up hating herself for it.
All she could really think about, at a time like this, was how much she wanted to be home.
"I'm just coming back from the library," she explained, "Took out a book on Picasso, just some light reading for the weekend. Sorry to hear about your mom, though. Everything good?"

As the girls talked, Brigid leaned further forward to look down the road. There weren't many cars coming down the road, so she wasn't likely to get splashed. She was mostly curious as to whether or not the bus would be coming soon.
She looked at the watch on her wrist. She should have learned the bus schedule for this area. Then she could feel confident about how long it would take to arrive. But for now, she was content to just stand there waiting for it.

Bunny, unlike the other two girls, thrived on small talk. She was very open with her emotions, opinions, and thoughts, after all, and so could talk endlessly about pretty much any subject under the sun. If it was something she loved, she would gush for hours about just how wonderful it was and why you should all love it too. If it was something she hated, then she could rant ad nauseam as to just why it was so terrible and why you should all hate it as well.
If it was something she was ambivalent about… that was a little trickier, but if anyone could spend an entire day talking about how lukewarm they felt about something, it was Bunny.
What was best about small talk was that if you were good at it, and if you never ran out of things to talk about, it would allow you to subtly, without anybody realising it, take the spotlight and become the centre of attention. When people ran out of things to say, you could just deftly swoop in with a related tangent or amusing segue, and bam, all eyes were on you again. It wasn’t always intentional on Bunny’s part. She had a lot of things to say, and a lot of energy inside of her that refused to stay cooped up. She would become the centre of attention without even realising it, sometimes.
But she sure as heck wasn’t going to complain about it whenever it happened.
Bunny shrugged, and bounced slightly on the balls of her heels, as she frequently did. The rain pattered against her umbrella, a soothing noise to be sure, but one that made her wish she was hearing it beat against the window whilst she was inside, wrapped up in a blanket with a mug of cocoa.
“Oh, yeah, she’s okay now! We bought some new furniture from Ikea a while ago, and she wasn’t carrying it properly and did something to her back. Apparently, she needed a, uh… discotomy? No, uh, wait, a… discectomy! That’s the one!”
Bunny giggled to herself, gently shaking her head as she did so.
“Sorry, medical procedures aren’t exactly my forte. So I was pretty worried about her at first! Not knowing what a discectomy was and all, but she’s totally fine! She was worried more about not being able to host for her radio show for a while than anything else. Although I know how she feels; I’m meant to be recording my vlog today, and if I end up catching a cold I’m gonna get real mad!”
Bunny laughed again, a laugh that, through hours of training and fine-tuning, was as cute and bubbly as could possibly be.
“So, Picasso huh? He of the upside down faces, right? What’s the book about? His life and stuff, or do you wanna try and art more like him?”

Discectomy sounded like something else, at first listen. Something else entirely. It was the ending of the noun that did it, but for a moment, Kitty tried in earnest to put together the connection between IKEA furniture and a vasectomy. She blushed at the embarrassment that only she would know, and turned her head downward for a few moments before she answered Bunny's question.
"It's a book of his paintings, but the tamer stuff, before he started doing totally crazy things," Kitty said, "Here, check this one out." Taking the book out of her pocket, she flipped through several pages. A gust of wind caught in the colorful leaves of paper, and she had to fight it in order to get to the painting she wanted, but eventually she made it to the right page.
"This one's called The Old Guitarist. He painted it in 1903, back when all these different art movements were sort of combining into this shit called Expressionism. It's from what they call his 'Blue Period,' which is when a lot of nasty stuff happened in his life, but as you can see he also started using a lot more blue colors too. It's sorta my aesthetic."
Kitty laughed quietly, then carefully folded the book back into her pocket.
Or, at least, she tried to. Another gust of wind blew it out of her hands and onto the ground, dangerously close to the puddle forming around the nearest storm drain just a few feet away from her. Kitty yelped, and stomped her foot down on the front cover of the book, stopping it from going any further. However, when she lifted the book from the ground, she saw that there was a big brown mud print all over the poor thing.
"Oh dear," was all that she could muster at the sight of the ruined book.
"It's a book of his paintings, but the tamer stuff, before he started doing totally crazy things," Kitty said, "Here, check this one out." Taking the book out of her pocket, she flipped through several pages. A gust of wind caught in the colorful leaves of paper, and she had to fight it in order to get to the painting she wanted, but eventually she made it to the right page.
"This one's called The Old Guitarist. He painted it in 1903, back when all these different art movements were sort of combining into this shit called Expressionism. It's from what they call his 'Blue Period,' which is when a lot of nasty stuff happened in his life, but as you can see he also started using a lot more blue colors too. It's sorta my aesthetic."
Kitty laughed quietly, then carefully folded the book back into her pocket.
Or, at least, she tried to. Another gust of wind blew it out of her hands and onto the ground, dangerously close to the puddle forming around the nearest storm drain just a few feet away from her. Kitty yelped, and stomped her foot down on the front cover of the book, stopping it from going any further. However, when she lifted the book from the ground, she saw that there was a big brown mud print all over the poor thing.
"Oh dear," was all that she could muster at the sight of the ruined book.
Brigid stood quietly as the other two girls talked. She didn't really know how to join in, if she could. She wasn't that knowledgeable about art. She could look at a painting and accept that it was art, but she didn't have much else to say.
When the one girl tried to show the other the book and it fell in the drain, that got her attention. The book looked soaked and muddy from the girl's attempt to retrieve it. Brigid bit her lower lip. She hated seeing books wrecked. Maybe it was from seeing Fahrenheit 451[ when she was younger, but it was always a shame.
Brigid reached into her coat pocket and brought out a sweat cloth. She had brought it in case she needed to wipe herself down after her job, but with the rain, that wasn't necessary. She handed the clean cloth to the girl.
"Will this help?" she asked.
She suddenly realized that that may have been a stupid thing to ask.

Awww. Bunny had to admit, she was a little disappointed the book wasn’t filled with upside down facial features and women with trapezoid shaped heads. It felt a little like it was missing the whole spirit of Picasso, really. It’d be like a book on Van Gogh without sunflowers. Or a book on Damien Hirst without chopped up pieces of cow.
The painting Kitty flicked to was pretty cool, though, and, pleasingly, it still had some signs of the “Picasso Doesn’t Know How Human Anatomy Works” style to it. Bunny wondered if good ol’ Pablo really believed people could curl themselves up into rectangles, like the guitarist in the painting seemed to be trying to do. She liked the colours, though. It was all pretty mellow and soothing, which seemed kinda at odds with his life if it was made during his Blue Period. Oooh, maybe that was the whole point! A moment of calmness in the midst of severe, debilitating depression. Or something.
Yeaaaah, she probably wasn’t gonna add ‘art critic’ to her list of talents anytime soon.
Bunny gave Kitty a gracious grin as the girl went to put the book away again. She would have kinda liked to see more, but she imagined that keeping it out in the rain probably wouldn’t have done it any go-
Oh. Well. Never mind that, then.
Bunny involuntarily winced when Kitty picked the book up. Well, ‘book’ was now a rather generous term for it. ‘Rag’ would be more accurate. She hoped the ink wasn’t starting to run. If it was, then that poor guitarist’s face, unsullied for so long by Picasso’s intriguing interpretation of where noses and eyes should go, would soon suffer the same fate of Facejumblitis.
The other girl had popped up now, offering Kitty a cloth. Bunny smiled at the girl, then gave a more sympathetic smile to Kitty.
“Maybe you could just claim the footprint was part of the design? No-one would ever know, it being Picasso and all.”
Bunny paused, taking another look at the book cover.
“Although that looks more like Jackson Pollock than anything else, right now…”
Another pause.
“Er, hang on, I think I’ve got some tissues in my pocket…”
Bunny delved into her pockets, desperately trying to hold on to the umbrella as the wind did its best to make everyone’s lives miserable.

Kitty grasped the cloth that the stranger offered her and used it to wipe down the book as best she could. Surprisingly, the cloth managed to soak up a good deal of the rain water, but the pages were already soaked, and most were beyond salvaging. She didn't have much of any money, and with the price of a full color art book like this, she probably wouldn't have been able to buy it even if she had been saving what little she had. The book was ruined. She felt her lungs tighten, and anxiety began to take hold in the bottom of her chest.
"I'm pretty sure that the footprint is pretty obviously not part of the design, Bunny," she said, somewhat annoyed. Her own clumsiness had led to the book falling into the water, but it was Bunny's choice to make comments on it. Unhelpful, useless comments. Kitty was lucid enough to keep anger from overtaking her, and knew that getting mad at a friend over something like this was unrealistic at best and just plain mean at worst, but that wasn't enough to keep her from scowling.
"And I think I'm good with the tissues, thanks," Kitty added, trying not to sound bitter.
She stuffed the book - there was no point to be delicate with the mess of ink and paper now - into the pocket of her hooded sweatshirt, handed the cloth back to the hooded girl, and sighed.
"Thanks for the cloth-cleaning-thing," she murmured as she turned toward the hooded one, "Name's Kitty, by the way."
