Of Moons, Birds & Monsters

Open: Day 5, Noon.

The most frequently traveled beach, if only for its proximity to the only real civilization on the island. The students who spend their time here will find a few abandoned food and merchandise vendors strewn about, and the occasional litter and seaweed washed up on the shores.

[[GLD4: Shawn Morrison Continued From: Siberian Breaks.]]

It was a far hike. Most everywhere on the northern part of the island was a danger zone. Fortunately, it seemed that the collar's beeping restarted everytime they left an area, other wise they'd have no chance whatsoever to escape the surrounding danger zones. Shawn had caught up with Lexi and the rest of them, with Renée catching up from behind.

That was good. They were all fortunate that everyone had made out it out safe and alive. There was no stopping however, as with every resumed beeping reminded them to keep moving. They kept moving south, at least Shawn felt they were going south, but they may have moved diagonally to cover more distance.

The trek across the entire island was a tough one, but they managed to find their way to familiar sands, where the beeping had come to a full stop and didn't resume. They were at a beach, and the only beach that wasn't a danger zone was the very same beach that he and the gold team spent some time at for a quite a while before.

Shawn let the bags drop from his arms. A major relief. He had handed Mae her bag on the way and also emptied only the necessary and potentially useful supplies of Jake's bag into Zach's bag. It was only two bags then, but his arms still felt numb from the travel. The bags hit the ground with a small thud and Shawn also found himself laying down on the sand, his body completely spent from the non stop walking.

He waited for everyone to settle onto the sand, before they could decide what to do. Maybe find a building or something to stay in, like the last time he was here. Maybe then he could talk to Renée like he planned to, before the announcer mentioned the danger zones.

Then maybe everyone could rest, especially Mason and Renée for what happened with Tim. It was obvious that something with the death really effected them, he could see that easily. He saw some of his self on their faces, Mason's in particular.

The face of someone who had just killed somebody.

Looking out from his laying position on the shore, Shawn thought he spotted something peculiar drifting nearby on the waves. Something that almost looked like people. Were there people actually just swimming here? He sat up and looked closer. The waxing gibbous moon illuminating the dark waters for him.

No. They were dead. More dead bodies. Then after some staring he started to recognize the faces of the two corpses: Holly Hergenroeder and John Lemmon.

His hands curled into fists so hard, he could hear his knuckles crack.

((W05-Mason Ross continued from Siberian Breaks ))

The guns of fort Mason had fallen woefully silent.

He had followed the group. The words that had come so readily before were dead in his throat. He gripped the handgun tightly. Once he had almost dropped it, deliberately. It felt heavy in his fist. Would have felt nice to rid himself of the weight.

They had reached the beach. Mason sat down in the sand. He was looking between his legs, at the barrel of the Beretta. Some of the sand had splashed up, flecked itself across the gunmetal. Idly, slowly, he wiped the sand away.

With that done, Mason brought one hand up to his face and rubbed it. His other remained tight around the handle of the gun.

(Alexis Allwell continued from Siberian Breaks)

Lexi had freaked out when she had been heading down the mountain and heard the gunshots. She had managed to slip and drop herself in a snowdrift. Even with all her layers of clothing on she was still freezing. Everyone had managed to catch up with her after that.

Of course, now that she was at the beach she was able to realize that in her slip on the mountain she had managed to rip a small hole in the heel of her left shoe. Now it was letting in sand and there was nothing she could do. Well, besides shiver from the snow she fell in.

But Mason had killed Tim. She had found that out. Tim had been following them? How had they not seen him? He's crazy... Was crazy. Gone now.

Unfortunately, Lexi had bad thoughts on her mind. There were only fifteen, no, fourteen of them left and she was in a group of five. The other four all had teams and weapons. She just had that hook on the rope, and all the team members she knew about were dead. She needed some kind of weapon, but how could she bring it up? Mason had just shot Tim, and didn't look so good...Poor Mason.

Okay she would try to bring it up soon, but right now that would be bad.

((Renée Carlson continued from Siberian Breaks))

Renée had caught up with the others. It had been tough going, the beeping of her collar driving her constantly on. She envied Mason and Shawn and even Mae, all of whom had longer legs than she did. Lexi was the only one in a similar position.

They'd made it, though. They'd made it to the beach, and while things were not perfect, they were all still alive. There were fourteen people left on the island, unless someone else had died during their trek, something Renée was entirely unwilling to rule out. It was getting down to the wire. It was time to really get cracking, to figure things out, to get their escape solidified.

Too bad Renée wasn't feeling very confident or heroic anymore. She'd gotten everyone killed. She'd let Tim down. That had led to Mason being forced to kill. It had to be weighing on him. She'd thought she was prepared to do what she had to, to look a villain in the eye and raise a weapon and pull a trigger, but after what Tim had said, she wasn't at all sure she could bring herself to do it. Villains. Heroes. The words tasted bitter. They were things she'd told herself to justify watching kids murder and cry and have sex. Okay, yes, there were heroes. Mason was one. Shawn was one. That wasn't because of the island. They were the same as they'd always been, only now that was going to come to an end if she didn't step it up.

Renée did not feel like a hero, or like a leader. She wanted to curl up and cry until all the pressure went away and she forgot she'd even met Tim. Life didn't work like that, though, and she had set herself up as the one in charge. She couldn't very well shove it off on one of them now, just because things had gotten tough. They were all hurting.

So she had to keep it together. She had to stay on top of things and make sure nobody else got hurt when they didn't have to.

"We should find some shelter," Renée said, breaking the silence she had maintained since the ski lodge. "It's best to be out of sight, so no one tries to pick us off, and I think we all need some time to process what happened."

She sure needed time. Too bad they didn't really have it. Running down the clock would just get them killed. Doing the wrong thing would get them killed. Playing would get most of them killed. There was no way to win, no way for it to work out.

She did not share this pessimism with the others. The last thing they needed was another drain on morale.

(Mae continued from Siberian Breaks)

Everyone was quiet and Mae wasn't surprised. A lot had just happened, again. Mae couldn't stop being surprised at the fact that it was all still very new to her. This was her life now. This was how things were going to be. She had to stop being surprised when violence happened, or when people suddenly died. It was never going to stop being like that, and the sooner she stopped being surprised at the sudden bursts of activity, the better.

Someone said something about finding shelter, and that was a good idea, but Mae bit her lip as she looked over at Mason. She had seen his moment of hesitation as she tried to get him to leave the danger zone, was he going to? She walked over to him, moving slowly so as not to spook him.

"I spent a long time here, at this beach," she said to him quietly. "We had a bit of a fort here."

She looked out at the water.

"I had to kill someone here."

She waited a moment for his response, before impulsively going on. "I know it's not easy. It isn't. But this is how it is. We...we have to. This isn't a vacation." Mae swallowed hard the rising lump forming in her throat.

"We don't know what people are capable of anymore. And what it's making all of us. But none of us have any choice anymore. It's this or die."

She turned to look at him then. Sitting on the sand and holding the gun. She knelt next to him, light as a feather, attempting to delicately to be as gentle as possible. So that he didn't stew, so that he didn't hate himself anymore than he had to.

"It isn't your fault."

It was night, but near the ocean was typically where the moon seemed to shine the brightest, from Shawn's experience at least.

He could see all their faces, all five Silver Dragon students and not one had any semblance of any happiness, real or fake whatsoever. It was such a change from when they arrived at the ski resort.

Renée was the first to speak. The De Facto leader of the Academy kids, who even having to live through witnessing a kill happen literally right in front of her eyes, from what felt like mere moments ago, still managed to stay strong and compose herself. He admired that about her.

She suggested they find a good building for shelter where they could hide out and rest while processing what happened. It was a good idea as the gold team had done that before on this very same beach. All they needed was a good safe place and a building appropriate for defensive purposes like last time.

"Agreed." He said. "Mae and I, have been here before. There are a few stores and merchandise shacks along the boardwalk to use, who knows? Maybe we might find someone else."

Whether that part was a good thing or a bad thing, he wasn't sure, not on this show.

"There was a building down that way, which a majority of my team stayed at for a while. I'll go check it out to see if it's still worth staying at. I'll meet you guys back this way later."

Through the side of his eye, Shawn noticed Mason and Mae sitting and talking with each other once again. Oh. Whatever, he'd ask the other girls for the favor then. He gently put his bags onto the sand next to Renée and Alexis.

"Can you two watch my bags for me?" He pulled out the large nodachi sword from Zach's old bag and laid it on the sand and then riffled through his pockets for Jacob Langston's Sig Sauer P226 before laying it on the sand as well.

"Here, you two can use these to protect each other while I'm gone. Mae and Mason already have weapons, so they should be safe."

Shawn placed the pump action shotgun's strap over his shoulder and then nodded at the two girls, before making his way back to the old Gold Team Castle.

Death. Wholesale. Mae confessed to having killed somebody.

Mason stayed silent, still staring at his gun. He didn't look up until she said it wasn't his fault.

He felt like he should've been angry, but that didn't seem quite right. What did he have to be angry at this girl for?

He took a deep breath, struggled with it as it hitched in his lungs. His eyes were stinging, but still dry. He swallowed.

"He's dead, isn't he?" He flicked the safety from three-round, to single shot, to safe, back to three-round, idly, the rest of his statement implied in the action.

Mason's tongue worked on the inside of his cheek for a minute, and he shook his head. He took another, hitching, wavering breath. He looked up, eyes scanning the night sky.

"Kid wanted his hat back." Timothy's eyes, pained, had told a story.

"Just his fucking hat."

Lexi nodded at Renee's suggestion to find shelter, the hole in her shoe definitely helping with that decision. There wasn't nearly as much sand inside. She could see Mason and Mae talking a short distance away from the group. Was Mae actually being nice? Helping to comfort Mason?

Shawn said he was going to check out a building further down, something about his team being there before? What had happened to them? Probably dead. Lexi mentioned without thinking, "I've been here before too, David and Sidney got shot somewhere around here." They were dead too. And David even had the chance to leave with her.

Then Shawn was leaving weapons, a handgun and a giant sword. "That's a big sword...geez," she said, turning to Renee. Lexi then pulled her rope and grappling hook out of her bag and started to untie the hook from the rope. "Well I have this, I mean I don't think either of us could use that sword." She couldn't remember seeing Renee with a weapon. "Do you have anything?"

Mae was comforting Mason, it seemed. Renée didn't completely care for that. She could trust Mason and Lexi and Shawn completely. She knew them by now. Mae, though, seemed very interested in ingratiating herself to Mason for some reason, with this combined with her actions at the ski lodge. Maybe it was a coincidence that he was the one with the gun. Maybe it wasn't. Mae was one of the more popular kids, though, one of the image conscious ones. They were the people Renée had issues with, the ones she thought were pretty conniving and backstabbing even before all of this. She trusted Shawn's judgment, but she'd still be on guard.

And then, Shawn was talking, telling them he was going off to scout. He told them to watch his stuff. Renée nearly protested. She nearly said she'd go with him, watch his back, keep him safe. What stopped her was Mae.

She'd gone with Peter, leaving Kathy alone with Tim. She'd had a bad feeling about it. It had been so clear, but she'd wandered off anyways. Now, she had that same sort of feeling about Mae. Mae was paying very close attention to Mason. Lexi was a good person, but might be too scared to act if it came to that. Renée wasn't going to make the same mistake twice. She wasn't going to abandon Mason. She wasn't going to let things go wrong.

Shawn had left weapons. Lexi asked about Renée's armament. She got her straight razor out and flipped it open.

"This is what I got," she said. "You should take the gun. It'll be more useful than what you have."

Renée wondered if she was just shoving responsibility off on someone else, removing all potential of having to do what Mason had done. No, that wasn't it. She was ensuring that she wouldn't make a bad choice and get anyone hurt, that was all. Lexi was probably farily harmless, so the gun would just keep her safe. Renée doubted she would be tempted to misuse it.

((Continued belatedly from As Cold As Silence))

When was the last time she'd eaten?

Slept?

Spoken?

Nate couldn't remember any of those things. She had an idea that this was bad. Her stomach clawed at her insides like a savage beast, the hunger tearing at her so much that it hurt. Nate was used to skipping meals and plain forgetting to eat, but this was something else entirely. Days without even a mouthful of food was driving her nuts.

She'd actually been tempted to try and hunt some of the wildlife, got as far as raising the sniper rifle and setting a bird in her sights... then broken off, shivering and retching. She couldn't do it, she just couldn't... not after what had happened with April.

As Nate trudged along the beach, she attempted to swallow. Her parched throat would barely allow it. If it wasn't for the help she'd had earlier, the lent bottle of water... she might've just about been keeling over.

She wasn't totally sure that wasn't what was about to happen anyway.

Through blurred vision, Nate could see others on the beach. She was tired of this, tired of everything going wrong, tired of the voice from her collar. She just couldn't... couldn't handle how everything she touched went to crap.

"Please... please don't happen again."

(Brennan O’Brian continued from Familiarity))

Here he was again. At night, yet again. Running, yet again. Everything was so similar. Brennan didn’t notice, didn’t really care. Vincent could have been following him, or he might not have been. Again, Brennan didn’t care. He just wanted to be safe. He wanted to be off this island. He wanted all the murder to stop.

As soon as Brennan reached the beginning edge of the sand, he stopped running; in fact, he stopped altogether. He still remembered what had happened last time. He didn’t want to trip up again. It seemed trivial to his other worries, sure, but it had been painful. Brennan didn’t want pain. He just wanted to be safe.

Panting slightly, Brennan surveyed his surroundings from the edge of the beach. He looked towards the rows of huts first, partially because that had been where Ali and Mae and Michael had been last time, and partially because Brennan didn’t want to go near the water if he could help it. His heart sank, however, as he couldn’t see anyone on the small boardwalk. Brennan looked over to the water’s edge. There was a large group gathering there, four or so at the least. Despite the reflection of the moon shining off of the water, he couldn’t tell who they were, he was too far away.

Slowly, Brennan started walking towards the group. He had no idea what he was going to do next. What if they were all planning to kill, ready to shoot the next person who came near them? What if he did manage to integrate himself into the group, and then Vincent came along? Brennan doubted they’d take kindly to a mass murderer, or the person hiding behind him either.

Brennan kept on walking. He had to hope for the best. He noticed someone else walking towards the group. Maybe they were in the same boat as him? Lost and confused, no idea where to go. Brennan wondered whether he should call out and say something. But what could he say? So he just kept walking towards the group, hoping for the best. He had to keep fighting. He just needed to be safe.

(sorry y'all for the short post, I have a death to attend to!)

Mae sat for a moment, listening to Mason, but watching Shawn walk off back to....that place.

She didn't want him going alone. Mason was muttering about a hat, and she wanted him to get through this, she did but could she live with herself if Shawn was gone? If he had somehow died back in that horrible place where so many horrible things had happened?

She grabbed her things, brushing the sand off the backs of her jeans as she stood.

"I'll be right back" she said apologetically. "I just need to make sure that Shawn isn't going into an ambush."

Her heart was racing for some reason, most likely paranoia, as she gripped the gun in her hand and went after him. God...this was probably so silly, but she couldn't live with herself if she was the only member of Team Gold left...

Mae was gone now, to go after Shawn.  Renee and Lexi were discussing something.  Mason was left alone, to his own devices, mostly.

He wasn't absorbed in anything (other than the obvious), so he was the first to see the new arrivals come down the beach.  The tiny, tiny, new arrivals.  One was a skinny girl (wearing an outfit that on anyone with a better body and during a better time would be just awesome), the other a small boy.  The girl had a big fucking gun; that was the more notable thing about her.

Mason pushed himself to his feet and pointed his own weapon

fuck are we back here so soon

at the girl, his hands trembling.

"I don't care who you are, I don't care what reasons you have, you drop that fucking gun."  He called out with as authoritative a voice as he could muster.

Are you bluffing?  For the love of Christ I hope you're bluffing.

Pointing his gun at the second human being of the day almost made Mason dry heave.  He wondered what Lexi and Renee were thinking of him now.

Renee was telling her to take the gun, something that surprised Lexi a little bit, but then again Renee had Mason if she really needed help. Lexi had people too...but there wasn't any reason for them to help her after a certain point. At the end of the sentence Lexi had managed to get the hook loose.

She picked up the gun and secured it in-between her innermost two shirts. That was a good plan, she could reach it if she needed to without too much fuss, and it was secure enough that it wouldn't fall or anything. Now she could carry the hook, and the rope was back in her bag, which she set down in the pile with the Shawn's.

That's when she heard Mason yelling. Lexi turned towards him, he had his gun pointed at a figure entering the beach. They had a HUGE gun, it was even bigger than Shawn's shotgun. Still don't know why he has that now and not before. Lexi thought about pulling out her new handgun, but decided not to. Mason could handle this, right?

(Madelyn Conner continued from Clusterfuck)

It took her awhile to notice that no one was following her, and that disquieted Madelyn. Still, she didn't hear gunshots so she assumed everything was alright. Plus, having something done about her throat was a great idea. Breathing and talking was a bitch.

But, as she approached, she saw that there was a stand off in progress. One with big-fucking-gun. She sped behind a building, and started to approach from there. She should've headed back to Sterling, but still. It was just curiosity, and she wasn't a cat.

When she got close enough Madelyn saw another kid approaching, with an orange bandanna. Her hand went to her pocket, where Ferric's bandanna was. Taking it out, she held it up so it covered the purple one on her wrist from the front, but the cameras could still see it from the back.

"Hey kid!" She whispered. "Get over here before you get yourself killed." She motioned with her free hand for him to approach. Gotta make this quiet, gotta make it quick.
