The leadership houses, while smaller than the manor house, are no less extravagant. Each one of the six seems to be competing with its neighbor to be as eye-catching as possible, with many different multicolored designs painted across and decorations adorning them. While the insides all share the same layouts, many different modifications have been made by the former occupants; some have added different furniture items, while some have gone so far as to redecorate the entire interiors of their houses, including one where the interior wall was removed and all seating and beds replaced with cushions.

He nodded at her and a smile came to his face…

"Alright, let's do it, stay close."

That worked!

He turned towards the hallway leading out of the kitchen and inched towards it--he forgot his flashlight and turned around, Ivy stayed clinging to him. She felt so small. It wasn’t the first time she had clung to him. She was very touchy-feely. She always was. He knew that he’d calm her down more with that than with words. He sensed it, she wanted it, he did it and she reacted as expected.

He felt her on his lips still, he felt funny in the stomach.

I kissed Ivy.

Why’d I do that? What game am I playing? Didn’t momma used to tell me be careful what I do and don’t go around breakin’ young girls hearts?

Beats’ Beats: Billie Jean - Michael Jackson Are you for fuckin’ real? You’re back? Now?

The walls were like jello and he couldn’t help but have the flashlight pointed to his feet, as if to confirm what he already knew--that wherever he stepped light would follow. Just like the goddamn music video. He was certain now, as he whistled to match the music in his head--he was tooted and booted. Fucked up. Tripping balls. On that shit. Maybe he should’ve woken up Lori in the living room first? To be honest, in the moment, he wasn't thinking about her at all. He just kept his light pointed at his feet and kept walking, Ivy attached to him at the hip. He felt like a candle in the wind. He persevered and headed towards the door.

He reached it and knocked twice, like the popo, fuckin’ loud.

“Wake up everybody! Something’s goin’ on! CODE RED! CODE RED!”

The music stopped, again. He missed it the instant it was gone.

Amelia remained asleep for only around a half an hour.

She woke with a start, staring straight up at the ceiling. She was flat on her back, and all she could hear was the sound of her own labored breathing. She shifted her eyes from the ceiling to look at the body beside her. Declyn was still fast asleep. Amelia was a bit jealous. She’d felt so terribly sleepy, she didn’t understand how she was awake. Her eyes fluttered back to the darkness above her while she contemplated her predicament. She knew she was tired, but here she was, laying on the bed wide awake with no clue as to how she reached this point.

The only other feeling she had right away besides that of being uncomfortably awake was that of heaviness. It felt like far too much of an effort to even turn her head back and forth, let alone if she’d tried to sit up or lift her arms. The soft mattress beneath her felt like it was swallowing her up inside it her body felt so heavy. She knew she should move, not wanting to run the risk of being engulfed by the bed, but her reaction times were slowed by how heavy her limbs felt. After some intense effort, Amelia had finally peeled her body from the mattress prison and gotten herself seated up in the bed.

But that only added to her distress.

Now there were more feelings. She felt wet, like her body had been dropped in a pool in her sleep. Her clothing was sticking to her skin in strange ways that made her feel uncomfortable and made her pull at the fabrics to try and re-adjust them to her liking. It was to no avail. She felt a droplet land on her hand, and it took a moment for her to process that the wetness was coming from her own face. She wiped her palm over her brow and it came away soaking wet. All of a sudden the intense heat of the room seemed to hit her all at once. She felt so hot, like she was sitting beside a furnace. She licked her lips and tasted the salty sweat that was pouring from her body. Every pore leaking like a faulty faucet. Even her hair was drenched from the sheer force of the sweat she was producing.

Needing to be free, she began to pull at her sweater, desperately trying to remove it and spare herself even the smallest amount of heat. Eventually she managed to pull it over her head and toss it to the floor, but it did little to help her issue. Next came the button-down. She was so eager to remove the suffocating garment that she simply pulled as hard as she could on either side, causing the offending buttons to go flying every which way as she tore it from her body. With that too now dumped on the floor to be forgotten, Amelia’s torso was covered simply in sleeveless black tank-top that ended right where her leggings began.

She pulled herself from the bed and into a standing position. She turned to look at the bed, and there was a large oval wet-spot where her body had been just before. As she stood she felt something bounce against her hip, and realized that her gun was still holstered around her waist to a small cloth-belt Declyn had helped her make earlier. That was good, she still had her blaster, like a true explorer. She shook her head in confusion.

Was that where she was? On an exploration?

No, no, that wasn’t it.

They’d been abducted, hadn’t they?

Her mind was swirling and it was hard to remember anything.

Just then, a voice came cutting through her thoughts and she jumped in the air at it’s call.

CODE RED?!

She didn’t know about a code! What was code red?! She screamed, and pulled the gun out of her holster and held it up in front of her to try and protect herself from whatever was happening. She kept it pointed to the ceiling and in front of her face as she collapsed in on herself and crouched down into a small little ball in fear and confusion.

Declyn found it hard to open his eyes, but once his mind processed the loud voice and the scream, his body jerked awake and he found himself almost falling off the bed with half his body hanging off the edge. He was lying on his stomach, one hand on the floor. He didn’t move to get up, in fact, he was careful to keep himself as still as he could for the second or two while his eyes tried to adjust to the darkness.

They didn’t. Maybe just a little bit.

“Ivy?,” he slurred through dry lips and turned his upper body, patting the other side of the bed. Empty. She was the last person he saw before he fell asleep. Or passed out from exhaustion, really. He repeated her name, louder, and his hand reached towards his bag to grab his phone.

He reached out to grab his phone.

He reached out to grab his phone.

He reached out to gra--

......

He reached out to grab his gun.

Mental block tossed aside, Declyn quickly pushed himself up into a sitting position and blinked towards the sound of Ace’s voice, standing up. “Wh--What? What’s happening?” he asked worriedly and moved towards the door, his steps gaining pace, missing the small cowering figure that interrupted his momentum. It made him stagger.

His free hand cramped but found a bundle of hair, the top of someone’s head.

He squinted his eyes.

“....Amelia???” Okay. No, this was not okay. Why was everyone being so loud? “What are you doing down there?”

Lori was fast asleep, snoring on the couch when she was awakened by someone shouting. She turned her head and buried it into a couch cushion, clamping her hands over her ears and groaning.

"Shut up, go away!" she yelled, throwing an ancient couch pillow in the direction of the noise.

It took her a moment of blinking and rubbing her eyes, but eventually she did come to remember where she was. They weren't at the hotel in Washington D.C. They were in an abandoned cultist's home on an island and additionally, she had drugged everyone.

She fumbled around for her flashlight, scanned it around the room and realized she was alone. She shined it towards the bedroom and saw Ace and Ivy at the bedroom door, making a ruckus. Good job, past!Lori, she thought smugly. Plan worked perfectly.

Lori snickered to herself and got up, walking the short distance, and tapped on Ivy's shoulder.

"Hey, h-hey, wait, I got it, ok wait, wait," she said, trying to stifle her laughter. "How many fingers am I holding up?" she said, putting her right hand up, fingers splayed wide with her left hand behind it and left fingers filling in the gaps of her right hand, making it appear to be double the fingers.

Ace had strong arms. They were familiar but in a dream way, foggy and distant and probably imaginary. Deja vu. It was okay, though. His light scared the shadows away, the hat kept her grounded. Her bare feet slid softly across the floor with no resistance, the light shining around them. He was slow. He swayed. She understood. He had to fight off the shadows for both of them, the hat couldn't do everything for her. But he was good at it, he kept moving, he kept his eyes on the ground and so did she. The shadows couldn't tempt her if she didn't look at them too closely.

There was a door there that she didn't think was there before. Or maybe it was, but this was a new place for it. Or maybe it had been here all along, but the room behind it had changed. She couldn't be sure. Shadows played tricks. Ace was loud and that was okay because she remembered suddenly that they weren't alone and the other people here didn't have anything to protect them yet, and he just wanted to save them, because he was good. She heard screaming but she was still safe, she was still safe, she hoped the others would be too, they didn't deserve the shadows, not even Lori, who was there when she thought about her because her thoughts were magic, too, the hat gave her power.

She turned toward Lori and gave her her most beatific smile, genuine as anything. She put her own hand up and intertwined her fingers with Lori's.

"Fingers," she said wisely, nodding. "You have them. See? You're safe." Her own light was pouring into Lori's hand. She hoped she hadn't been too late.

He looked away from the door and then at Lori who arrived suddenly and with much surprise. He stared at her fingers even though he wasn’t the one asked and thought they looked like pink sausage shaped jellyfish tendrils...all 9 of them with smiley faces. They looked like those balloon worms clowns used.

He giggled like a schoolgirl for a few moments, he laughed really hard and really loud, cackled even--he laughed so hard he cried.

Wait, why was he on such a dramatic emotional rollercoaster? Was laughing appropriate? This was an emergency! Code red! Wait, what did that mean again? What was he doing? He tried to think but he spoke first...

“That’s a cool trick Lor,” he said finally, “Your make-up looks cute too, you do something different?”

And it did look good! It really brought out the facey-ness of her face!

He wiped a tear and then went to open the door, because, like that’s what you do when face to face with a door, right? Like why be in front of a door if you ain’t gonna twist the knob, like, why have ham but no burger? Make sense?

Nah, that makes dollars b!

He opened the door and with a heavily accented stereotypical accent he shouted…

“LUUUUUUUUUUCY I’M HOOOOOOOOME!”

He then paused and looked deathly serious…

“But for real, guys, wake up! Something’s wro--”

He noticed Dec and Amelia both with guns in hand and so close Dec was pretty much standing over the spacey girl. The light coming from his flashlight tended to mix with the thickness of the air and create an almost rainbow film over the world itself. It was very hot in here, in the whole house really and Ace swore he saw heat waves…

He looked at Declyn and saw his hair, it looked like cotton candy, he wondered if it would taste weird? Probably like hair and cotton candy. He liked the pink flavor more anyway and Dec needed his hair, it made him look cool.

“Hi.”

Amelia rocked back and forth in her crouched position as she tried to steady her mind and stop the world from feeling so crazy. She kept her eyes shut, squeezing the lids together hard as if she more pressure she used the more hidden she would be. The hands holding the gun out in front of her face were shaking like leaves in the wind, and she still felt so hot, it felt like the air was trying to suffocate her. She couldn’t remember where she was, or how she’d gotten here. All she knew was that she couldn’t think right, and she remembered a bus, and then there was a lake, and she remembered blood and crying and someone being hurt, and it was all just playing through her head at 12x speed so she could only retain bits and pieces but she knew something was wrong.

Then there was pressure on her head, and her eyes snapped open and she looked up, her eyes wide with terror and bloodshot to hell.

“Dec… Lyn…?” she questioned as she stared up at the boy.

Why was she down there? What a good question. She honestly had no idea. All of a sudden she felt the panic that she’d been feeling starts to subside and she was no longer sure of anything. Why HAD she been down there. Declyn was up there so that was obviously where she should be too, right? It only made sense for friends to be in the same place. What place was this again? She still couldn’t remember. There was a weight in her hand she realised, and she tore her eyes from the blue haired boy to stare at the strange object in her hands. Where had she gotten such a thing? It wasn’t exactly something she was used to seeing in her hands.

Ahh yes, it was given to her in the bag.

But wait… who had given her the bag?

Oh yeah, they were abducted, she thought that earlier.

Aliens? No… she didn’t really think so, not this time.

This place didn’t look like an alien spacecraft where they dissected and probed other life forms for information on their species’ pros and cons.

After all, why arm your prisoners? That was just silly.

She looked up at Declyn again, but before she could speak the door behind them opened, and someone came in shouting with a bad Spanish accent. Who was Lucy? Her name was Amelia, not Lucy. This person must have the wrong place, she should let them know. After all, this ‘Lucy’ must be worried because her friend still hadn’t come home. It took her a moment to realize, but when her eyes adjusted she recognized the person as Ace.

Oh yeah, she met him in the house where she found Declyn.

Oh, that’s where they were.

Survival of the Fittest, right?

Everything came rushing back to her brain at hyper-speed, and suddenly she remembered everything. Hell, she even remembered the answer she missed on her last math test. She knew it should have been C. Always go for C if you don’t know, Amelia, that’s what Dolly always said. Where was Dolly? Last time she saw her was on the bus. Then she thought she saw her where they woke up in the chairs. When Ms. Garcia….

All of a sudden Amelia felt herself get extremely sad, and before she knew it, she felt herself sobbing uncontrollably. She buried her face in Declyn’s leg and sobbed loudly, all her emotion pouring out of her like a water bottle with a hole in the bottom. She couldn’t even speak she was crying so hard. She felt herself heaving and retching alongside her sobs.

She closed her eyes, but snapped them right back open.

When she closed her eyes all she could see was Ms. Garcia’s dead body, but then suddenly it was her own body lying there, half her head blown off.

Oh god, she was so scared and sad, she didn’t know what to do. She wrapped her arms around Declyn’s waist and just continued to sob.

Ivy took Lori's hand, intertwining her fingers with hers, smiling at her with a dopey, spaced out smile and declaring that she was safe. Because she had the fingers, you see.

Lori burst out laughing, grabbing Ivy's hand so they were holding hands at chest level.

"BWAHAHA," she cackled, shaking their hands up and down. Ivy from school, who was a petty and vicious would slash your achilles tendon on a bad day, since it was all she could reach. This was the Ivy who was holding hands with her, looking at her with those besotted eyes and telling her that they would be safe and warm. Telling Lori of all people, which was even funnier because Lori knew she hated her guts and thought she was trash.

"Namaste, you rancid bitch!" she said, laughing and wishing that someone else was sober to remember this for later, because she was sure no one would believe her.

Declyn wondered if that was what it was like to have younger siblings.

There was the clingy, sobbing type who had an incredible amount of tears stored, the cackling one who raised some questions you might not want to know the answer to, the OH MY GOD YOU GUYS type who was screaming for no good reason (apparently), and the aloof type who raised even more questions.

Something was very off.

Something meant everything.

The broad brightness of the flashlight made it easier to focuse on the three figures at the door, his mouth slightly open until Amelia's sudden outburst brought his attention back to her.

"Yes, I'm here," he responded gently to her mumbling his name and crouched down just enough to be closer to her level, wrapping both arms around her, his chin resting on top of her head. "I'm here." He found it hard to breathe, so hard it made his lips feel even drier. Realizing he might have been squeezing Amelia too hard, he immediately relaxed his arms.

He stared back at the others, quickly wiping one of his eyes with the back of his hand. It was like someone had taken them out while he was asleep, used them for a rough round of baseball and put them right back in after that.

"What?" Declyn's face blended in with the confusing vibe. All he wanted right then was an explanation. Bitch seemed harsh but if that was Lori's way to express endearment towards Ivy, then sure. So be it.

"Okay, can someone just please," he exhaled, "tell me what's going on?" A desperate gaze, an innocent demand. "Ace?"

This room has a fucked up vibe...

He stared at Amelia crying and looked around the room with a child like wonder. The designs on the wall paper moved like millions of ants. Ace inhaled and the room expanded much like his chest, everybody becoming long and distorted like they were in trick carnival mirrors, it was only when he exhaled did things go back to normal…

“Woah.”

Ivy still practically glued to his body, he tried his best to be cool and calm--but the cheerleader pressing herself into him felt good. Too good. He didn’t trust anything that felt that nice, likely meant it was too good to be true.

Now that ain’t really fair--is Meilin too good to be true?

Considering we got abducted by terrorists like a week after I asked her out, yeah! I’d think too good to be true describes that shit perfectly!

Only because she isn’t here with you--or maybe something different, you feel guilty?

No! I just want her here! With me! And I don't know how to get her here!

She is with you. You don’t see her spirit? Sense her aura? She’s with you, just like your Mom and Dad and Connor and Wyatt and Ramsey and everybody and everything you ever loved.

I meant physically here!

Only those in the physical put so much weight on it.

And what the fuck did that mean?

“Uh…”

He closed his eyes and saw nothing but darkness aside from the fractals that seemed more akin to tendrils, he felt something enter his mind and not leave. Why’d he come here in the first place? He looked at Declyn, he of the cotton candy hair, and felt his mouth go dry and his words get stuck…

“I forgot why I busted in here.”

He put his hand to his forehead…

“Uh...wait, wait, wait, it was right here,” he said panicking, “Tip of my tongue…”

Fuck. What was it? What did he need to tell Declyn and the others?

“Y’all remember #Shitball?”, he asked, “Oh! Wait, sorry! Swift! The balls were swift!”

There were an awful lot of things happening at once. That was okay, though. That was the thing about the world, was that it was full of things. It was real easy to hold onto too many of those things at once but if you did they'd pull you in too many directions and take you apart into pieces. And Ivy didn't want to be in pieces because that would leave all sorts of spaces for the shadows to crawl into and she'd done a pretty good job of avoiding those so far, she thought.

Maybe that had been one of her problems, in life, that she hadn't realized how many things there were and how unimportant most of them were and she'd let them pull her into too many pieces too many times. That seemed pretty obvious, now that she was thinking about it. Weird how she'd never noticed before.

Anyway—things. The few that counted. Her pain was one, it followed her around like a helium balloon on a string. She felt it from a distance, delicate and powerful, contained for the time being. The hat was another, was still firmly placed on her head, its aura dancing on the corners of her vision. One of her arms was still wrapped tightly around Ace's; he shone so bright she wondered how she'd managed to look straight at him. Her other hand was still wrapped in Lori's, whose own light was dimmer but still there. She was safe but probably needed help to stay that way. Ivy held her hand a little tighter. She was saying words but those went under the not-important-things. So did Ace's words, and Declyn's. Declyn! She'd forgotten about Declyn. His hair smelled like toothpaste, that Declyn. Myles loved him, except Myles didn't really love anyone that way anymore for a bunch of reasons so that wasn't really true. She wished Myles was here. She bet he glowed like the sun.

Wait, too many things again. Declyn's light flickered like a candle; Amelia didn't have a light at all, which was troubling. She glanced around the room looking for a solution and found one pretty quickly which was nice, it was nice how things came together so easily when she could ignore the swirling patterns crawling aimlessly across the walls because they weren't important, they feared her, anyway. The solution was so obvious she wasn't sure how it had taken so long for her to think of it even though she wasn't sure how long it had been, or if any time had passed at all, if any moment in time had ever existed besides this one.

"Okay," she announced to the room, her hand tracing down Ace's arm to intertwine with his fingers. It was a shame she didn't have more hands but more hands would probably be hard to navigate. She felt one, for a second, a third hand, invisible but tangible in her mind, waving at the air, and then it was gone again and she didn't miss it.

"We all need to get in the bed."

She stepped in the room, pulling Ace and Lori behind her.

And just like that!

Poof!

Boom!

Pow!

Like magic the point that was on the tip of his tongue danced to the back of his throat and finally found refuge in the corner of his mind. The point was chilling with his pineal gland and hippocampus, they were playing Uno--the pineal gland was cheating.

The change on his expression was sudden and jarring and yet to him felt about as natural as breathing. His grin was spastic and his eyes shining, pupils like Oreo cookies.

“You heard the lady! C’mon!”

He followed Ivy and Lori to the bed, a confidence and eagerness in his stride--this almost felt like a game. In football if you were thinking you were losing, you needed to rely on muscle memory and instinct in a game. Thinking meant hesitation. You couldn’t hesitate, not ever.

“To the bed!”

Amelia felt like her world was falling apart. She couldn’t think, she couldn’t speak; the only thing she was currently capable of was sobbing. Images of death and misery kept flashing through her mind, and they scared her. Was Ms. Garcia really dead? Yes. That was indisputably true, right? That had happened one hundred percent, she wasn’t making it up in her head. By nw she had no more tears, but her involuntary sobbing continued, and her breathing was trapped in short, dry heave- full spurts. Her mind was still racing, trying it’s best to bring her back down to earth and remember what the hell was going on. Everything felt so hazy and wrong, and she wasn’t sure what was real and what was just her mind going a billion miles an hour.

Then she felt a pair of arms wrap around her, and suddenly it was as if all the haze was gone.

She opened her eyes wide and saw that she was being held by Declyn. He was hugging her tightly to his body, but the tightness helped to ground her and make her feel real again. Suddenly the room wasn’t just a twisting mass of darkness, and she could make out the shapes and colors of the space around her. Her crying had ceased as well, and her breathing was starting to come back down to normal. She almost felt like herself again, and it was because of Declyn, she was sure. He released his grip on her, but kept her wrapped in one of his arms, she reached up with her free hand and grabbed his bicep in a vice grip, not wanting to lose the point of contact and possibly be thrown back into the void she’d just escaped from.

There were other voices now that she could barely recognise, and she turned her head to see who else was around. Yes, she remembered. Ace, Ivy and Lori were here. She remembered being in a house with them. She remembered staying up and keeping watch with Lori. she remembered going to sleep next to Declyn. But something still felt wrong. Ivy’s face was wrong. Ace looked different too. The energy she felt from them was different and she felt scared. She felt her left hand grip the gun tightly as she saw them begin to approach.

No, no, no, no, no!

She stood up quickly and stepped between Declyn and the others, pointing her gun directly at them and feeling her entire body shake with fear and confusion. Her eyes were wide as she stared them all down. Something was wrong. Someone was messing with her mind, making her not able to think. They’d been abducted, and she read about stuff like this all the time. Aliens wearing skin suits to look like humans and continue their experiments. That was the only explanation that made sense. Declyn was real. She could feel that right away. His energy hadn’t changed.

One of the three in front of her was not who they seemed.

“Stop! Don’t walk closer!” she warned with a shaky voice.

Her eyes darted from one face to another, trying desperately to figure out which one of them was the fake.

“You can’t hide.” I know you’re messing with my brain. “Which one of you is it?” I have to protect everyone. “How can I know you are who you say you are?!” I won’t let you mess with us anymore.

Her arm was shaking with fear and adrenaline. Her pointer finger dance over the trigger like a snake slithering across the ground. She had to do something! She had to stop the spinning in her mind! She kept looking back and forth, her arm swinging as she looked, pointing at one, then the other, then the other.

WHO WAS IT?!

He finger slipped and pulled back in reflex.

The loud bang caused her to scream, and the force of the recoil threw her back into Declyn’s chest behind her. The bullets lodged themselves in the wall beside Ace, mere meters from where he stood, but they hit no one.

Brat-brat-brat-brat-brat-brat!

The gun fired.

Ivy screamed and clung to him tightly, letting go of Lori, burying her head in his chest. He felt his blood run cold and a familiar adrenaline hit him--like he had been tackled by a rhino or Wyatt or a rhino dressed as Wyatt. He couldn’t hear anything, he couldn’t speak, but he separated himself from Ivy and made eye contact with her and nodded. A quick nod. A “Chill, I have a plan”.

Except that was a lie or maybe it wasn’t, he didn’t know. Maybe he did. Maybe the plan was that there was no plan.

He hit the b-button, a quick spin and his eyes were focused on Amelia…

Little Amelia.

Scared and frail and paranoid Amelia.

He couldn’t think clearly. He didn’t want to think at all but he knew this was Survival of the Fittest, he knew he wasn’t thinking right. The context of the situation, that word on the tip of the tongue came to him. The point had hit the pineal gland with a draw 4 and a reverse. Uno, bitch!

But Amelia and her gun needed to be taken care of. She needed to be calmed down.

Ace cleared the distance between them in quick strides and launched himself towards Amelia and Declyn. He grabbed Amelia by the shoulders, he didn’t think of the gun, he didn’t think at all. He didn’t hesitate.

He kissed her on the lips.

Long and hard.

He separated and breathed heavily.

"You're okay."

He drew her close, a hand on her hip, a hand on the muzzle of her gun--hot, so hot it burned. He didn't care. He embraced the pain and the moment.

"Calm down, don't do that again."

Lori was still laughing when Ivy announced that it was all time for them to get in bed.

"Huh?" was all Lori managed to get out before Ivy pulled her forward and on to the bed. She tripped over something and landed face first into the sheets, dropping her flashlight on the way. The flashlight spun and wobbled on the ground, throwing the light around as it went. She gave a high pitched yip when she felt the weight of another body land on the mattress, causing the springs to move again. She was getting tangled in sheets and body parts.

"Declyn, help me!" she yelped, as he was the only one not on the bed or crying on the floor.

Suddenly a shot went off and everything was quiet for a moment. Lori looked around as best she could in the dim room, but no one looked like they were in a great amount of pain from being shot. Then again, they were all on drugs so who knew. Lori unzipped her chartreuse track jacket and left it behind in the sheets, freeing herself and standing, now with just her white camisole.

Ace was calming Amelia down by.....sucking face with her. It was weird, but she wasn't about to interfere since it seemed to be okay for the time being.

"Here, let me just....I'll just take that," Lori said, putting her hand in the middle of the Ace and Amelia sandwich and reaching for the gun.
