Watch Your Step

Day 2, 11:00-12:00 PM, Post-Announcements, Open to all comers

The spot with the best freely accessible view of the island, Nature's Lookout was mainly used for contemplative purposes. There are a collection of handmade benches here to provide seating for those that desire it. One notable addition to the cliff face at Nature's Lookout is the wooden platform that extends out over the cliff that people could walk out onto to feel closer to nature and commit items to the earth below.

(Jeff Greene continued from I Pray to the Lord You Reveal What His Truth Is)

Jeff Greene was thankful for two things right now: convenient park benches and an amazing view. Even given the situation he was in, this was still breathtaking and a perfect spot to just kick back for a little while.

Not that he was tired or anything. Absolutely not. But maybe Tanisha and Cammy were.

When the announcement had blared over the island, he'd found himself...cold to the news of it. He'd never bothered to learn most of these names so it was mostly just academic. Someone had their throat torn out and that sounded pretty intense, and the guy who'd done it had gotten himself involved in more than one kill on the roster, but without faces for the names, what was the point of even paying attention? Some weedy nerd could have come up to him and claimed to be Tyrell, and he wouldn't be able to call BS on it with 100% surety.

Maybe it was the sight of the island in its entirety, but thoughts of how he'd acted in school began to play on his mind as he sat back against one of the benches. If he ended up dying because he'd ignored the people around him, that'd be...well, not his fault, honestly. Nobody told him that memorizing his classmates' names would be an important career skill, so who could blame him for neglecting to do so?

Still...

"Careful around the edge," he said to his two traveling companions. "Long way down." He was keeping a careful eye on the approach to this little overlook. Be stupid if some opportunistic freakshow came along and rushed them from behind.

((Tanisha Abbey continued from I Pray to the Lord You Reveal What His Truth Is))

Tanisha walked up to the lookout with Cammy by her side. Tanisha kept one arm around the girl, her other still clutching her shotgun. She could feel sweat beading on her forehead from the walk to this point, and she wiped some away with her forearm. They had finally reached one of the highest points on the island, and thankfully avoided trouble along the way. Jeff had pointed out the edge of the lookout, which Tanisha nodded to.

"Yeah, thank for the heads up," she said.

She let go of Cammy and moved over to one of the benches. After laying the shotgun across her lap, she began to rifle through her bag, fishing out one of her water bottles. She opened it up and took a big sip.

"Anyone else need some water?" she asked, holding the bottle out to her allies. "We gotta stay hydrated."

It had been quite a day and a half. After they got Cammy inside and calmed her down, it was too late to move out, so the trio camped out in the house. It didn't look like anyone else was coming in, so Yuka, Sal, and that other dude probably went their own way. It was a shame, but she couldn't blame them. The announcement that morning brought some harsh truths in, so Yuka going off was probably for the best. Yuko was dead, slain by one of Tanisha's Dance Team girls. Yuka probably needed to find her sister's body in order to make peace or pay respects, or at least make sure Yuki was still okay, since Yuki was probably in as bad a place as Yuka was right now.

The rest of the announcement was pretty upsetting, just knowing that familiar people like Dante and Beryl were dead, and that people like Tyrell and Blaise had killed. They'd have to be extra careful going forward. Adele and Joanne were still alive, but now they knew some people were definitely going to take the dangerous route out of this place, they couldn't fool around. They were well armed as a group, but they still had no idea where anyone else was or what they had. Odds were that trouble would find them sooner or later.

Yep. People were dead. And suddenly Cammy wanted to cry again.

((Camellia Walker-Grimsley continued from I Pray to the Lord You Reveal what His Truth is.))

All these people she'd gone to school with over the last four years, some familiar, others less so, but all she'd never see again.

But it had been a couple hours since then, and Cammy felt too empty to cry.

...

She was alive, though. She had to... had to look at the positives of the situation, if she was going to get through this. She wasn't going to break down.

The last few hours had been... uneasy, to say the least. She'd barely gotten any sleep. She was normally fine with sleeping anywhere, but this was... well, in this situation, you couldn't blame her.

And so she was tired, and weary. She on the bench next to Tanisha, her eyes glued to the floor.

"W-Water," she repeated, "Yeah, I could..."

After leaving the aviary, he had run until his legs gave out from the stress. Before he knew it he was in a residential area north of the menagerie. His tired and beaten-down body compelled him to find somewhere safe to hole up, and the dark skies solidified that decision. He found a small house that looked empty and safe enough, and did his best to barricade himself in for the night. The darkness was unnerving, but he didn’t dare make any light. If he ended up alerting someone of his location, this night could very well have been his last.

It took some time, as he was basically working blindly in the dark, but he was able to eventually clean and wrap both of his new wounds once his eyes adjusted to the pitch-black of the house he was in. First he did his leg, ripping open the slit in his jeans where Sapphire’s spear had punctured his skin, and bandaging it as beast he could to stop the flow of blood. His sides were still very sore, so every movement he made was accompanied by a sharp pain. He bandaged his shoulder next, which was a bit more challenging. With a bit of effort and some painful movement, he was successful, and he could relax for a bit.

Lorenzo found a clean and flat area, and made himself a bed of sorts. The house was a disaster, and he didn’t feel like exploring much. Not in this dark. Instead he simply popped a few painkillers from his first aid kit and lay himself down using his bag as a pillow. His maul lay beside him, ready to be grabbed at a moment’s notice. The blade was still tinged red with blood. Lorenzo grimaced and turned away from the blade, forcing himself asleep.

[Lorenzo Tavares Continued From Break Your Halo]

The night was full of nothing but tossing and turning on his part. His mind filled with nothing but the horrors of the day, repeating over and over. He awoke to the morning light spilling through the windows, but felt as if he’d never rested at all. The pain in his sides was almost worse than the day before, but Lorenzo could handle it. He popped another few painkillers and forced down some of what the Terrorists had provided as ‘food’ before collecting his things and deciding to move on from the village.

He hurried out of the open and walked the treeline as he continued north up the island. His leg stung a bit, but it didn’t hurt anywhere near what he expected, so that was at least a good sign. His maul was back in its sheath, and he kept the E-Tool he’d stolen from Emmett tucked away in his bag. No need to show all his cards straight away. Thinking of Emmett made him cringe a bit, as it brought his thoughts back to Sapphire. He remembered the blood. The look in her eyes as he tore open her torso.

It was a look that he would remember for the rest of his days.

Her eyes would haunt him even in the afterlife, he imagined.

As he followed the path marked on his map, the announcements blared to life from the many speakers dotting the island. It spooked him at first, but he stopped his trek to lean against a tree and listen to what was read off. Many had died the day before. More than he would have imagined. No one he knew very well. His hand gripped his own throat in fear as he heard Danya say that Tyrell had ripped out a girl’s throat with his teeth. A sick smile found its way over his features as he thought of it. The bastard would have done the same to him if he’d have let him. Tyrell killed another person too. Two down, but Lorenzo was still standing. Ty wouldn’t get the satisfaction of being able to kill him. Not if he could help it.

Hearing that Dante had died was no surprise. Lorenzo knew he was beyond saving when he saw him bleeding out on that pier. The fact that Blaise put him out of his misery was the only part that shocked him. Another person for him to look out for as he continued his days. He was sure they wouldn’t think twice about doing the same to him if they ever saw one another again. The announcements dies out eventually, marking a danger zone and granting Blaise a reward for their kill. Lorenzo would definitely have to avoid that part of the island for now.

Then he suddenly realized. Sapphire’s name wasn’t there. She hadn’t been listed among the dead. His eyes looked up at the bright morning sky and he let out a chuckle that eventually became a full-fledged laugh. She was alive! He didn’t actually kill her! He wasn’t sure why, but the sense of relief that washed over him in that moment was all-consuming and made him feel lighter on his feet. He let out a shaky breath and held onto a tree for balance as his laughing fit ceased. He felt a loose tear fall down his right cheek, but he wiped it away as quickly as he felt it appear.

He wasn’t a murderer. Not yet.

Eventually, Lorenzo made his way up a steep path, and found that it opened up into what looked like a lookout point of sorts over the cliffs. He approached slowly, and as he got closer he could see three figures up ahead. Tanisha he recognized, as well as another of the many Cams that littered the school. The boy he recognized by face, but the name seemed to escape him. No matter. He had to approach them the right way. No need to start a fight right away, not until he knew what he was dealing with, at least. As he came closer he called out to the group.

“Hey ya’ll! I’d say good morning, but that’d be a hard sell.” He smiled, but not too fully. He made sure that his face looked in pain, as he was sure they could see the bruised and bandages covering his body, he didn’t want them to think he was a threat.

Not just yet.

Water seemed like a good idea, seeing as it'd been a big hike up here. Jeff had to admit though, these meager bottles wouldn't last, not unless they found some source of fresh water to refill them. Plenty of water-located locations on the map, sure, but until they actually had a chance to look at them, no telling if they'd be safe. He wasn't going to go shitting himself because he'd been chugging dirty water. That'd just be plain stupid.

Since he'd been keeping his eyes peeled as promised, Lorenzo's appearance didn't come as much of a shock. In fact, Jeff had shoved himself to his feet before that "good morning" had even sounded, his bag unzipped and ready to pull his weapon. His shield was already out. No way he could shove that bulky thing into his daypack, and there wasn't a convenient carry strap either.

This kid...interesting hair, looked like he'd been through a lot, with bandages across his leg and his shoulder. If he'd been attacked, there was no way he'd be this casual, not when Jeff had this big giant shield made of plexiglass or something just laying out there in plain sight. But maybe he wasn't using common sense, like he was naive or really, really dumb. Maybe. He might as well meet the kid halfway and work from there.

"Morning," he said, void of any fake friendliness. "How'd all that happen?"

The ball was in Green Hair's court. Long as he played along, they could avoid any unfortunate circumstances.

[[Arjen, Enter]]

He had calmed down. Arjen was having serious regrets about not having helped Marco, but at least his tears had dried. He wandered around until he was sure that he was out of Marco's range. He had no idea how he had survived the assassination attempt at the beach, but it might have been a warning shot to scare him. He probably was laughing his ass off, with him scaredly running around.

Arjen was startled when an unknown voice declared his classmates dead while mocking them. Then, the voice vanished. That was a lot to process. All these names who were faces to him, dead. If he had been at school and he had heard that one of his classmates died it would've been shocking, it would be hard to process, it would be impossible to swallow within a minute. But this was this feeling multiplied by a thousand. He had no time to mourn one before the other names emerged.

That really sucked.

If he was at home and had heard the news of one classmate dying, how long would it have taken to get over it? Two weeks? Two months? If he came out of this, how long would it take to deal with these feelings he was feeling? How many decades?

Arjen very slowly walked to the people at the benches, Flammenschwert dragged along at the ground. There were people talking with each other. His classmates. Would-be-names.

"Geez, who did this to you? Did you stumble upon Sierra?"

Tanisha passed her bottle over to Cammy and stretched her neck a bit. It was hard enough to walk up a cliff side on a hot summer day, but it sure didn't help that the collar around her neck made her feel extra stiff or got in her way if her head moved a bit. Still, at least they had a moment to rest and get their bodies back to a normal, less physically-stressed status.

That didn't last long. Lorenzo suddenly came in, covered in bandages. Tanisha moved her bag aside and kept one hand on her gun. She didn't know him that well aside from crossing paths with him at some parties, but if he was that beat up, then there was a chance that he was either trouble, or someone who was trouble could be coming in after him. That's when another dude came out of the woods. She didn't know Arjen that well, but considering his first reaction was to assume that Lorenzo was beat up by Sierra, that gave Tanisha pause.

"Sierra? Wait, is Sierra getting in fights here too?" Tanisha asked.

Sierra wasn't on the announcements, but if she was playing, that wasn't good to know. Tanisha knew that girl was outdoorsy and had gotten into fights before, so she probably had a huge advantage here. But that didn't matter as much.

"Hey, have you guys seen Joanne or Adele?" she asked.

"No."

It was all Cammy said at that moment. The single word punctuated the scene, and it had been the first clear thing Cammy had said since the day had started. It was sharp. It was firm.

It would have been a powerful statement had she not been staring at the floor while she said it.

"She wouldn't... Sierra wouldn't..."

Of course, Sierra would. But Cammy didn't know that. In her mind, it was unthinkable, that Sierra would do anything remotely close to what happened to Lorenzo. The way she was seeing it, this boy was just bad-mouthing her friend and a girl she once loved very much.

She still did. A little. But that didn't matter right now. Cammy slunk off the bench, moving toward the edge of the platform and sitting down.

She wasn't going to get too close to the edge, of course, but right she wanted to be away. Away from the two newcomers. She was putting Tanisha and Jeff between them and her. And that was fine.

She took a deep breath in, then out, not saying anything more as she looked out to the horizon.

Lorenzo kept on the small smile as the boy whose name he couldn’t remember stood up to greet him. Well, perhaps greet wasn’t exactly the best word for it. He stared him down stoically, holding what looked like a riot shield you’d see in a police raid in his hands. The shield could end up being rather problematic if anything physical came to be, so it would probably be best to avoid any kind of altercation. At least right away. To be honest, Lorenzo wasn’t exactly looking to start the day off locked in combat anyway. His body still ached from the mistakes he made in that regard the day before. Better to just be pleasant and disarming until he could gain some sort of leverage.

The boy asked how he’d been injured, but before Lorenzo could respond, another voice from behind him cut off his speech. Lorenzo turned abruptly to see who the new arrival was, and recognized the smaller boy as Arjen Kramer. Lorenzo was familiar with the kid, but could probably count the amount of conversations he’d had with him on one hand. He eyed the large sword the kid was dragging behind him, and made sure he kept it in his field of vision, just in case the kid decided to attempt to swing the massive thing. Arjen came with some useful information though. Seemed like Sierra was playing as well. Tanisha seemed pretty surprised by that fact, but Lorenzo knew first hand how easily one could convince themselves to do bad things to survive.

“Nah, unfortunately this damage is Tyrell’s handiwork.” He admitted, gesturing to his bruised ribs and bandaged limbs.

He felt fully alright with blaming Ty for all of his injuries. After all, with his rising kill count, it was perfectly believable that he could cause so much damage. Sullying that bastard’s name even further was petty, sure, but it sure made Lorenzo feel a bit happier. Tanisha had asked if he’d seen some other students, and he shook his head in the negative, looking straight at her, clocking the shotgun she held in her hands.

“Sorry, haven’t seen em’.” He let the smile fade from his lips. “Most of yesterday was just me trying to keep hidden so i could recover a bit after my run in with Ty.”

“Bull. Shit.”

Jeff didn’t mince any words on this one. If Green Hair was giving off bad vibes before, that story was setting off friggin’ alarm bells now.

“One guy did all this. One guy?” He gestured at Lorenzo’s bandages. “And not just any guy, but the big spree killer everyone just heard about. And this guy, the guy who shot someone and tore a girl’s throat out...he just let you go?”

He strode forward, gaze directed upwards to meet Green Hair’s eyes. His nailbat hadn’t emerged from his bag yet, but as long as this asshole wasn’t showing his hand, he couldn’t give his away either.

“I don’t know what your game is,” he growled, “and I don’t care. Get lost!”

With his free hand, he shoved forward, intended to just show he meant what he was saying. If things went wrong, he could always use the hand with the shield instead. He’d been itching to give this baby a test run.

Arjen laconically shook his head at the question of whether he had seen Adele or Joanne, who were girls usually Tanisha hanged around with.

"Sierra is playing! Yes, playing this game! Marco is, too. So is Willow."

Arjen stepped closer to the group, sword still sliding on the ground.

"Can you believe this? Our classmates are murderers. Oh god, Ty has gone insane."

Fucking Tyrell. What he had done to poor Lorenzo was appalling. Plus, he had killed two people as well.

"Jeffrey, jeffrey listen. I know this sounds improbable, but this is real. This is real. People really are this brutal and insane. There are monsters here. Brutally beating people." He pointed at Lorenzo.

"Or they rip the fucking throats out or or or, what Sierra did to Marco! Marco was stabbed in the eye by Sierra. His right eye is now broken arrh."

Arjen whispered.

"i don't wanna die like this, I don't wanna die like this."

Then, began to raise his voice again, shouting to the group.

"When you kill me just fucking shoot me in the head, okay??"

Arjen was not sure to whom he adressed this plead exactly, but he wished everyone on the island would know to give him a quick and painless death once the time would come. His throat felt raspy. His hands shook. He did not want any broken limbs or tasered eyes.

Tanisha, seated peacefully on her bench with her hand on the shotgun, had to watch as everyone in the group seemed to devolve instantly. Cammy was in denial that Sierra could be playing, so much that she was now edging closer to the cliff edge. Tanisha gestured at her to come back, but Cammy wasn't looking her way, so it didn't have any effect. She was going to call out when Lorenzo affirmed that Tyrell was the one who attacked him, not Sierra. Of course it'd be Tyrell, the guy who was taking more names than a census. It sounded like Tyrell had attacked Lorenzo and Lorenzo had barely escaped with his life.

It sounded like that, but Jeff disagreed.

Now Jeff was accusing Lorenzo of making it up, citing that it didn't make sense for one person to do to Lorenzo what appeared to have been done to him, nor did it make sense that Lorenzo would be spared when Tyrell killed Christine and Felix. Tanisha didn't necessarily think it was so odd, as Tyrell could have been close to killing Lorenzo before something happened to give Lorenzo the chance to escape. Tanisha couldn't make time to think, as Jeff looked prepared to fight Lorenzo now.

And Arjen wasn't helping either freaking out and saying bad stuff about Sierra, Marco, and Willow. Tanisha shouldn't be surprised Marco was playing, nor that Sierra would hurt him, but now Arjen was having a breakdown like Cammy. Everyone was getting too close to the edge, literal and figurative, for her to handle.

"Okay, okay, boys, let's take a sec," she said, standing up from the bench.

Tanisha kept the shotgun by her side and had her other hand raised.

"There's no need to lose our shit or to do anything that puts us on the announcements tomorrow. Can we just stop and take stock of what the fuck is happening here?"

Things were going bad. Arjen insisted that Sierra was playing, and Cammy didn't want to hear anymore of it. She simply cupped her hands into her ears and pulled her legs in, trying to drown out the noise.

It didn't work particularly well.

Lorenzo narrowed his eyes at Jeff as he seemed intent on disbelieving Lorenzo’s claim of Tyrell being the one to attack him. It was kind of funny. He was actually being mostly truthful and yet still there was someone to doubt him. He didn’t even know this prick, so who the hell was he to stand there and call Lorenzo a liar? Arjen, as if on cue, attempted to defend his claims, also claiming that not only Sierra, but Marco and Willow were also playing the game. Lorenzo was a bit surprised to hear that. Marco was a little shit, sure, but he didn’t think he had the balls to actually try and kill people. Same for Willow. A strong wind would break that girl in half. Then again, it was usually the people you’d least expect, right?

It seemed like Lorenzo wasn’t the only one who decided that playing was the only path that made any damn sense.

Jeff, as Arjen called him, started to approach Lorenzo, spouting some nonsense about how he should get lost. Lorenzo felt his eye twitch. This dude was a fucking prick all right. Lorenzo hadn’t even entered this situation looking for a fight, but it seemed like that was rapidly becoming less of an option. Did this dude think he was a fucking threat with his dumbass shield? Tanisha tried to calm the situation down, but it was too late for that. Jeff was already in his face, and Lorenzo’s hand was already on the handle of his maul.

“Believe whatever the fuck you want, asshole. I don’t owe you an explanation.” He seethed.

Jeff was close enough to touch at this point. Lorenzo could feel the vein on his forehead pulsating as his annoyance with this meathead douche bag was hitting critical levels. All of a sudden Lorenzo felt himself being shoved backwards by the shoulder. He caught himself in a back-step, but the shove was more than enough to piss him off royally. Lorenzo, using both hands, shoved the other boy in front of him with all the strength he could muster.

“Don’t fucking touch me, dick!”

To his surprise, though maybe he shouldn't have been surprised, Jeff realized that everyone else was actually buying into Lorenzo's explanation. In particular, Tanisha was acting like he was trying to get everyone killed, talking about how nobody here needed to end up in another announcement.

Well, no shit. What did she think Jeff was doing? If they let this snake end up in their midst, they'd ALL end up as names on the list. He knew the type. The instant their backs were turned, he'd start slitting throats.

"Would you just-" he began, but then he found himself staggering backwards, falling flat on his butt as he turned to see who'd done it.

Who else? It was the asshole. The asshole had pushed him!

Screw this.

Fire engulfed Jeff's senses, and he began to scramble to his feet when he realized he'd fallen against someone, that panicky nerd crying about doom and gloom.

Well, screw him too!

"Out of my way!" he shouted, pushing Arjen aside. His gaze was fixed on Lorenzo, the rest of the world having nearly faded from existence. He charged, shield braced in front as he examined where Lorenzo's feet were going. There was no room for finesse with this. He was going to make this smug prick eat dirt, one way or the other.
