Archangel

A long, swinging bridge that crosses a deep ravine heading into the uninhabited part of the island. The bridge sways eerily in the wind and the fall into the ravine below almost certainly spells doom for anyone who happens to lose their balance or step too close to the edge.

Brad felt himself being pulled back by a violent jerk against his torn shirt, sending him to the ground on his side. He had Gabriel, the sick bastard, on the ropes thanks to the brutal hit to the back of his leg. He could have taken him. He could have made him pay for what he did to Jason Foley (god rest his soul, Brad thought), but it appeared that someone thought otherwise. He stumbled up onto his feet again, the warm throbbing numbness from his wound still hurting like a bitch but not doing anything to quell his anger.

"Hey, what the hell is wrong with you?" Brad asked, staring at the figure with a florescent light tube. "I could hold him off! I don't-

Brad stopped when he realized who he was talking to. The kid who he was shouting at. Adam Dodd, the winner of the first SOTF. Brad had only watched short segments of the show when it had taken over the airwaves but he knew who Adam Dodd was. From the news Brad had learned that the boy was a victim, and had gone through more than his share of anguish, so much so that it made a life sentence in jail look like a girl's slumber party. From the gossip on school and what he had personally viewed, Brad realized that the kid wasn't in his prime as far as his mind was concerned. He always appeared strange, more of a social outcast with a lot of public attention than a reality TV celebrity. He was conflicted with his views about him though. From what Johnny had told him, Adam was ingenious when it came to defending himself, and that most of all the kills that he had ranked up were mostly in self-protection. Not to mention the fact that he always got out by the skin of his teeth. Brad was unsure of how he should feel.

Adam had thrown himself in front of both Terrie and him, playing the role of the hero that Brad was in the middle of portraying. It occurred to him that Adam wasn't as insane as Brad had openly assumed he'd be, although the son-of-a-bitch was senseless enough to fight a sword-wielding monster with only a light fixture. Despite his lack of actual thought, Adam appeared to be on the good side of the situation, which was good enough for Brad.

"You be careful," he warned as he turned around about to make a run for it. "That creep knows how to use that sword."

He wasn't even entirely sure if Adam had even acknowledged what he said, but there wasn't enough time to worry about small details such as that. Brad turned and ran in the same direction that Terrie headed in, his hockey mask in one hand and his daypack wrapped around his other shoulder. This was when he finally realized another boy with a cast and a lit cigarette in his mouth, but wasn't in the best of moods to stop and ask who he was. Instead he just tapped him on the shoulder lightly as to say "Don't stay here, you idiot!" and ran out of sight.

Things were happening far too quickly for Simon's liking. Startled more than he could say by the sight of poor Jason Foley's heart, he was slow to react as Gabriel began moving to the other side of the bridge and attacking the others wildly with his sword. Although Simon hadn't figured Gabriel to be a nutcase, he could most certainly see it in him now.

Simon was just starting forward when just about the last person he had thought he would see emerged from the undergrowth. Adam Dodd, famous or infamous? The winner of the first televised SOTF competition. He must have had the worst luck in the world, to be forced into the situation of kill-or-be-killed not once, but twice.

It was amazing to see, Simon thought, that despite everything he had gone through Adam still had the courage to put himself on the line and pull the others out of the line of fire. Both Brad and Terrie ran past him in order to escape from the manical Gabriel, and Simon made to follow, then paused.

How can I leave him to face down that monster all by himself?

Any help, was, after all, help. Simon looked at the strangely shaped weapon he held, then darted forwards, running towards the bridge and the face-off between Adam and Gabriel. The menacing sword-wielding lunatic was talking as Simon approached, and he was certain it was a prelude to a showdown. The runner did the only thing he could think of.

"Hey Gabe! Stop with the harder-than-you talk and grow a brain!" Not particularly good, but Simon knew that what most people naturally did when you called their name was look around, even if just fleetingly. Simon raised the dazzler, pointed it at Gabriel's face, pulled the trigger, and hoped desperately that he was right.

As he missed with the swing of the light tube, Adam scrambled to retain his balance as the behemoth of a teenager pulled himself to his feet. Eyes widening as he realized just how ridiculously tall the other man was, Adam readied his light tube again, but was surprised when the follow-up blow never came. Instead, the monster just put his sword down to his side and started to talk at him.

It's this recognition thing, it's making pretty much everyone want a piece of me, but they want to make some long-winded speech bullshit before they do me in...

With the lightbulb at the ready (he couldn't believe he was fighting with lightbulbs, the fact still made him want to almost laugh), he listened to the monster speak, and raised an eyebrow when it seemed that he wanted to establish a dialogue. But there was one thing in the man's tirade that had struck him as being somewhat disturbing, and Adam figured to call him on it.

"Wait, let me get this straight? You'd kill a puppy?! YOU, my friend, are one sick fuck!"

Blinking the sweat from his eyes, Adam looked the guy up and down, and realized that he'd referenced his ill-fated cousin. Garry had perished in SOTF the second, along with two of his closest friends. Though the three had never met up and Garry had been somewhat of a motivator, Adam realized that this horrific game seemed to stalk him and those he loved at every turn.

The adage "life isn't fair" really rang true right about now.

"Garry was about as fucked-up as I'd assume you are. Of course, from the way that you're going on, you'd almost remind me of some Bond villain, spouting off his dastardly deeds to Mistah Bond before you leave me at the mercy of your sharks, or lasers, or whatever bullshit you've got cooked up. Well, dastardly fiend - you wanna know why I don't play? Why I don't kill you all? Well..."

For a second, Adam dropped his tense expression, and looked at the other boy with a look that almost seemed to transcend the game, a look that almost said "see what I've got to deal with here?". As he gestured to the light tube that he held in his hand.

"I'm fighting with a set of goddamned fluorescent light tubes, you idiot! That and obviously unlike yourself, I'm not off my rocker yet!"

Before Adam had a chance to say anymore, a most unexpected thing happened. Of the three teens that he'd thrown backwards and instructed gruffly to run, one of the three (the smallest-looking one) appeared at his side, pointing what looked like a laser pistol at the large man. Aiming the thing directly at his face, the boy screamed something at the monster (calling him Gabriel, Adam supposed that was his name), and pulled the trigger. Not waiting to see what was going to happen next, Adam took the boy's surprise entrance as a cue. Stepping forward, he swung the light tube again at Gabe's stomach, this time letting go of it, sending the tube flinging towards the behemoth. At the same time, Adam hoped that both Simon's distraction and his own would keep Gabriel from raising his sword, as he'd already made the decision to put his shoulder down and spear-tackle the giant towards the edge of the ravine, a move that would surely send both of them flying towards the water below...

Always trying to be a hero, Dodd, not realizing that some of what you do is just plain old STUPID shit!

Most people turned around when you called their names. Gabriel wasn't most people. Instead of turning to outright face the one who'd called him by that name, he whirled around, casting his free arm in the air and, he hoped, knocking whatever object the other boy had in his hand away. He saw it was the boy he'd dubbed 'Cancer-Man', due to the fact that he had in his mouth, a mottled cigarette. Gabriel decided the time for talking was over, and again raised his sword to cut open the boy who'd just attempted to blind him with some kind of laser dazzler, but missed.

However, a curious shattering noise came from behind Gabriel, and he reeled around to see that a flourescent tube, obviously intended for Gabriel, had crashed into a nearby tree. The shards of glass flew across the warm, wet ground.

Before he could even look to strike at Adam, who he figured would attempt to throw more lightbulbs, he suddenly felt a massive blow to his chest, knocking him off of his feet. Adam Dodd had lunged directly at him, and as strong as Gabriel was, Adam had caught him off-guard, and the two were now careening off into the ravine below. Gabriel would've yelled numerous profanities had the Canadian not knocked the wind right from his chest.

They fell through a mess of trees, their limbs cutting away at the two combatants. Below, a river cut it's way through the forest. Rocks poked out of the rough stream, and Gabriel's previous assumption of it being a painful fall was quite the understatement. Gabriel, despite the fall, was able to keep a firm grip on the sword enough for it to land close by. He hit the ground with a loud crack, a few large sticks breaking underneath him, poking into his back as they did. Gabriel resisted the urge to cry out in pain, instead focusing his energy in getting back up, as he was sure Adam would be doing the same.

Feeling around for the now-familiar grip of the sword, he saw that it was still in suprisingly good shape. He gripped the weapon, and got up off of the ground, to see that he'd narrowly missed the rocky river, though his head was spinning from the impact. Still, rage and a general sense of defeat flowed through Gabriel, and he now drew into a more aggressive posture as he looked amongst the dark, harsh ravine for Adam Dodd.

Fortunately for Simon, who had failed to anticipate Gabriel's violent reaction, he hadn't been quite close enough to be struck when the lunatic had swung around with his hand. After all, Simon had been further away from his insane classmate than Adam was. Still, his plan had failed, and were it not for Adam, Simon would probably have been in a lot of trouble.

However, as it was, Adam went flying into Gabriel at high speed, the force driving the pair of them off the plateau and into the ravine! Simon ran over to the edge and looked down to where the pair of them had disappeared. Due to the vegatation and dark interior though, Adam and Gabriel were nowhere to be seen. Simon gaped and stopped dead for a few moments.

That was heroism, plain heroism. Killer or not, Adam has courage, and he has it in spades. Jesus... that was some fall, will he be okay?

Simon was concerned for the previous winner of the game, but knew that he had no way of accessing the ravine floor easily, and he knew that by the time he did, Gabriel and Adam would be long gone. Simon paused and considered what options he had. He looked over his shoulder, to where Terrie and Brad has disappeared not long before. The two of them - aside from Adam, were the only people, correction, only friendly people he had encountered so far. It was his best bet.

Simon turned away and hurried away in the direction he had seen Terrie and Brad heading in earlier.

Adam, sometimes...? You're an idiot.

This, of course, was the most prominent thought that ran through Adam Dodd's head as he essentially tackled Gabriel Theobaldt, a much larger, and much more readily armed teenager off of a fairly large plateau and into the river below. Adam'd never been the kind of person to act first and then think of the consequences; at least, he hadn't before Survival of the Fittest came along. But to say that his current action was impulsive would be completely wrong - rather it was absolutely premeditated. Assuming that he was able to keep his grip upon the larger boy as they fell down towards the bottom of the ravine, he might be able to inflict serious harm upon him, disabling him and preventing him from chasing after the other three teens, all of whom were obviously spellbound by the fact that someone was actually PLAYING the game.

At the very least, he'd figured, sending both of them off of the ledge would allow them to escape. And if Gabriel didn't end up hurt? Well, Adam would very simply have to bolt, as fast as was humanly possible.

Of course, like most well-laid plans, Adam's idea didn't quite pan out. As he felt the sensation of free-fall encompass him, he lost his grip on Gabe, as the angle of the fall had split them apart. The sensation of the ground rushing quickly to meet him was one that Adam couldn't quite remember having before - he wasn't one to go skydiving or do any kind of base-jumping, or anything like that.

I think I've tested fate enough for one lifetime, thank you very much!

To say that it hurt like hell didn't even begin to describe how hitting the ground felt. Adam felt his left shoulder pop out of its socket - an old injury that Cody Jenson had left him as a going-away present before Adam had run him through with a sword in the previous game. Grunting in agony, and pushing the hood that'd fallen over his face back, Adam scrambled to his feet, knowing that even injured, he was in immediate danger, what with Gabe likely still alive.

And pissed...

Barely able to think straight thanks to the white-hot pain surging through his shoulder, Adam searched for something, anything that he could slam his shoulder at, to set the dislocated limb back into place. In the ravine itself, there weren't exactly a lot of trees or bushes hanging around, only the gradually inclining cliff face from where they'd come. Cursing internally, Adam began to panic a little bit. He couldn't very well fight with anything if he couldn't use his arm, now could he? All he had was a knife and some light tubes, and to the best of his recollection, all of them were in his pack...which was up on the hillside.

That, of course, was when he saw Gabriel Theobaldt. Standing about ten feet in front of him, the large boy had his back turned and was leaning over, obviously looking to pick up either his sword, or his dignity.

Does it even matter which?

Knowing a golden opportunity when he saw one, Adam grunted to himself softly, and ran full-speed at the boy, hoping to put his injured shoulder into Gabriel's back, hopefully knocking the boy down and re-setting his injured limb.

Adam quietly thought as he bolted at the boy that this manuever had better work, or else he was, for lack of a better term - fucked.

The brief pause in the chaos allowed Gabriel to think about Adam's comments. It probably wasn't the best idea to start rambling and asking Adam the questions he knew would be met with violence, but Gabriel couldn't stop himself. After so many years of apathy and carelessness, he'd lost all love for people, and now it was hard to put himself in a position of compassion for anyone. To see someone risk their life for someone they didn't even know... the idea was foreign to him. Gabriel suspected Adam wouldn't waste much time and come at him again, and he heard the telltale sound of footsteps behind him.

With a grunt, he turned around quickly only to see Adam charging shoulder-first at him; Gabriel lost his footing trying to move out of the way, and landed on his side in the ravine. The rocks that he'd seen poking their way out of the stream now dug into his midsection, a dull pain now setting in. He hissed angrily, but couldn't see Adam; from the noises Gabriel heard, Dodd was seemingly in quite a bit of pain as well. The sword trembled in his hand, and Gabriel lamented his clumsiness. He didn't notice it at the time because of the water running past, but the rocks had scraped his side badly, drawing blood.

Fuck... I would've been dead if I landed on these. I should seriously slice and dice that cunt...

Not wanting to stay on the painful rocks, Gabriel once again, got off of the ground once more. With a smirk, Gabriel looked over at Adam the sword now brandished in his hands, watching every possible avenue of attack Adam had, that he could see. There wasn't a ravine to get tackled off now, and Adam didn't have anything to throw at him, and nobody to try and shoot Gabriel in the face with a beefed-up laser pointer.

"Well done, 'Mistah Dodd.' But let me remind you, what you're doing is futile. Even if you do make it out of here once again, in the silence of the night, you're always going to hear the screams."

His attack hadn't gone as planned - that much he'd almost expected. The boy, Gabriel, hadn't seen him coming until it was far too late, and he'd lost his footing trying to avoid Adam's onrushing tackle. Adam had mostly missed, but caught a piece of him all the same, the impact of which still managed to set his shoulder back in place with a satisfying 'pop'. Finding himself knocked to the ground a few feet away from where Gabriel managed to land (though thankfully not on the same type of rocks), Adam grunted as he landed on his re-set shoulder, a small throbbing pain being the end result of his fall. It didn't seem serious, nor did it persist as he dragged himself to his feet, which surged relief throughout Adam's body.

No point in wandering around with a fucked-up shoulder. I mean, I've got enough body parts that don't work properly from last time around, I don't need new ones to stop working...

As he got to his feet, Adam surveyed the scene. Gabriel was also rising to his feet, and still managed to have a grip on the sword that he carried.

Well, don't some assholes get all the luck! Fuck! What the FUCK am I going to do now?

Bracing himself for another attack, he was somewhat surprised when Gabriel spoke, holding the sword at the ready. But his words...Adam raised an eyebrow at his cryptic wording. Though Gabe's speech patterns were probably the least of his worries at the moment, he took a small step back and figured it apt to respond to the monstrousity standing before him. At least, that was what Adam figured him to be, especially by his zeal for blood.

"Wait...what? The hell do you think you are, a poet? I'd tend to disagree, buddy. What I'm doing is by no means futile. In fact, I'd say that I'm a really fucking good example of why it ISN'T futile to try and survive. I don't know if you've been keeping up with, y'know - current events and all? But I've been through this shit before, and I came out the other end, when a whole hell of a lot of other people didn't."

Grimacing at the boy, Adam's eyes widened as he realized what he truly meant by his words.

"Oh, wait one sec...you're talking about the fact that anyone who gets out of here's gonna be all fucked up and shit, right? Well...I've got news for you, dude. Like I just said...I'VE. BEEN. THROUGH. THIS. SHIT. BEFORE...follow? I know what it's like to wake up in the middle of the night with nightmares. Reliving the same horrible shit every fucking time I close my eyes? Yeah, I've done that. I don't need some monumentally large prick telling me how it is. Odds are, you aren't making it out of here alive."

Adam smirked at the boy, and felt himself starting to get wound up. He'd been told by several people, albeit gently, that he'd been seen as having somewhat of a foul mouth, and having a tendancy to rant while participating in the first version of this horrific game. He'd solemnly nodded, acknowledging the fact that he ranted when he was angry or stressed out, and that his colourful language was a habit that he didn't see stopping anytime soon. Here, of course, was no different.

"I've seen assholes like you before, the first time around. You're what...the guy who thinks he's got no other choice to play the game, so he has a fun time doing it? You enjoy killing people, and not feelin' bad about it? You ever stop to think that...y'know, just maybe you might be a fucking sociopath!? Jesus Christ, man. You...you're just like any number of assholes who tried to play the game and got cut down prematurely. Fact, I got some names for ya. Cody Jenson. He played the game, and liked it. Fucker didn't last but to the very end, and I took him down myself. He had his chance to kill me, but didn't. It came back to bite him in the ass. Or, you can look at the case of the unfortunate Mr. Jacob Starr. Guy chased me and two of my buddies around the island for the first two fucking days trying to kill us. Shot at us, threw motherfucking molotov cocktails at us, and tried almost every fucking imaginable way to kill the three of us."

Adam shook his head, sadly.

"And y'know something? He managed to kill both of my friends, but fucked up and didn't get me. And y'know how he died? I ran into him in a gazebo, he let me in on the little secret that he'd killed a THIRD friend, and we finally fought. He fuckin' died, because I slit his throat. Now, I've gotta tell you, Gabe - I don't feel fucking good about that at all. I mean, here's a guy that I kind of knew from school, and yeah...I CUT his goddamned throat! You don't feel any kind of remorse from that shit, and you're not a human being at all."

Narrowing his eyes, he paused for a second to ensure that the man across from him wasn't readying for an attack. He seemed to be almost amused at the rant, so Adam continued, knowing exactly what his plan of attack would be from here. It'd be risky, but it just might work.

"Which brings us to case number three, that of Peri Barclay. Didn't know the fucker, he was from England or some shit like that. But him and a buddy of his wandered around killing all kinds of people. Heard their names on Danya's little announcements every fuckin' day. And when he tried for me, guess what happened? He fucked up, and I chopped his motherfucking head off with a sword, very similar to the one you're holding right now. In fact, I can say that you're probably going to share a very similar fate to him, Gabriel. You don't seem to get it, but the way to get out of this game IS NOT to play to win! That's just fuckin' stupidity! You've got to do the smart thing, and play to survive. Survival of the Fittest. That's what he nicknames it. If you play to win, to kill everyone else, you won't last. It's not possible, because you'll have someone like me, someone like that Calvert guy...you play to stay alive, to keep you and your buddies breathing. In the end, if you do that shit, you'll come out okay."

Adam tensed up, ready to attack.

"That's why you won't last, Gabe. You're too big, too ugly, and too fucking stupid to know what the fuck to do. So you killed some guy already. That's fine. I don't give a flying fuck. All I can say is that the last time I hear your name, I'm fairly certain it'll be getting said over the PA, turning you into a statistic that nobody's going to care to remember. Fuck, why do you think that they have shit like 'Madelaine Shirohara day' in New York, and shit like that? It's 'cause they remember the good ones, the ones who took a bad situation and tried to help others. The ones that kill for sport?"

Adam spit into the dirt.

"Those ones fade away, nobody giving a damn in the very end. And as for me? Well, Gabriel...I've killed twelve times the people that you have. And the difference between you and I? I remember each name, each face. They're burned into my memory, no matter who they were. I'll never forget, for as long as I live, and I have a feeling that you don't need to care, don't need to remember. That'll be your downfall, sir. Oh...and by the way?"

Adam readied himself. This was it. The final moment.

"Fuck you!"

Making a quick motion forward, Adam quickly threw his right foot into the ground, making a quick 180 degree turn and sprinting off as fast as he possibly could in the other direction. The river lead off to what he thought was a jungle/forest kind of thing, and anywhere could manage to be better than standing beside a crazy guy with a sword. Gabriel'd been just crazy enough to listen to Adam's calculated rant. Usually they just came out, but this time was different. Gabriel reminded him of a comic book villain, and he knew that comic book villains loved to listen to rants, in order to retort to them. He'd hoped that Gabriel wouldn't have just attacked him, and he'd gambled correctly. His plan of attack? He had nothing. No weapons, no food, no elongated light tubes. Nothing at all.

What's that expression? Never bring a sword to a gun-fight? Well fuck, never bring your bare hands to a sword-fight. I ain't even going to fuckin' try any of that shit. I'm outta here!

Staying to fight would be stupid, and Adam was not this. Part of what he'd said had been true - he had fought to survive. Just like he would do again, as even though the nightmare had seemingly reoccurred for Adam Dodd, his drive to survive was still as strong as it was the very first day that he'd been involved with Danya and his sick contest.

And he knew that it would be like this until the day that he died.

Adam's ploy had worked; Gabriel only realized this too late. There was no way he would be able to keep up with Adam at that rate, with the condition his knee was in. His own foolishness struck him like a train, as he realized Adam wasn't someone who was intimidated easily, a tactic Gabriel initially thought would work. But Adam's words seemed to ring in Gabriel's mind. Though Adam posed himself as an example of why it WASN'T futile, Gabriel was amused at Adam's interpretations of his somewhat cryptic wording.

Futile... no, it isn't futile to try and survive. To come out of it without some blood on your hands is what's impossible, why try not to? Yeah, guys have tried this before. But that's the thing - they've done it before, this is the third time 'round. I've seen both of these games through, all of these people play it and lose. Doesn't mean it's impossible...

As Gabriel watched Adam run away from him, he sighed, and then put a hand to his face, now smiling again. Adam mentioned the agonizing fact that he's killed twelve times the people Gabriel has. Hopefully that ratio will... change, over time. He hoped he would kill Dodd, but it was futile to even try at this point. Adam would be far by the time Gabriel would catch up with him, and even then, pursuit of Adam would only slow him down.

And we can't let anything stand in our way, can we?

"What the fuck? Who...?" A collection of voices spoke in his mind. "Oh, wonderful. I'm hearing voices. Can insanity be the least bit creative?"

"Gabriel... We aren't simply voices. We're you. All of you. You've got many sides, emotions... all suppressed. Lost. Love, he's been here a while. Happieness has been going in and out, too."

What the hell?

Gabriel blinked, and rubbed his head, trying to wade through the mess of voices. It didn't make sense. It was nonsense, just constantly flowing through his mind. It didn't take long before Gabriel finally cried out, screaming and clutching his face. The sword clattered to the ground.

"We're tired of you. We're tired of your silly little speeches, we're tired of your sick impulses, and we're especially tired of your stupid little mistakes that cost you... us... so much.. We - you - are done with Gabriel Theobaldt. Adam put it well... Fuck You. Don't expect to hear from us again."

Suddenly, the voices were quieted. Gabriel heard footsteps walking away from him, and then nothing. He picked up the sword, and rose again. He didn't feel different in the least. Still, he couldn't help but be extremely disturbed at his brief episode. If he couldn't trust himself to be sane - in his mind - how could he trust himself to survive this game? He was playing to survive, though differently than Adam, that was for sure. What Adam said, what the voices said... decent advice should he want to survive. His petty insults didn't really matter. They were only the words of a deranged SOTF Veteran who he doubted would last very long this time around. He's been through it before, but that doesn't make the situation any less... insane.

Insanity. A relative term, isn't it?.
