Watch Your Step

Day 2, 11:00-12:00 PM, Post-Announcements, Open to all comers

The spot with the best freely accessible view of the island, Nature's Lookout was mainly used for contemplative purposes. There are a collection of handmade benches here to provide seating for those that desire it. One notable addition to the cliff face at Nature's Lookout is the wooden platform that extends out over the cliff that people could walk out onto to feel closer to nature and commit items to the earth below.

Woah, people were getting aggressive. He was not the only one anymore. It was normal to crack up when placed in this situation. Arjen was lost of what to do with the conflict in front of him.

Arjen's flight instinct kicked in when Jeff touched him, he stumbled backwards to not getting involved in whatever the footballer was going to do. So, he backed away from the fight until something stopped him from going further back.

Cammy picked the wrong time to stand up.

The case could be made that had she still been sitting down, she would have been fine. She would have lurched forward, sure, but since she was in a seated position, she would have only tipped forward a little bit. The majority of her body would still be on solid ground, certainly not across the threshold. Additionally, as grim as the thought was, if she'd still been sitting down, it wouldn't have been her going over. The boy would have tripped over her seated position, and perhaps he would have been the one to go over.

None of that came to be, because Cammy was standing at that moment. She wanted to move away from the fighting, away from everything. She stood up to move, to walk away from this whole thing.

She didn't even manage to take a single step.

Instead, when Arjen was shoved into her, she took the full force of the momentum, and lurched forward. Her eyes widened as the edge she thought she was safe from was suddenly right beneath her.

"Wh-" she started, as the heel of her right sandal landed right on the edge of the platform. But there was no grip on the sandal, or at least not enough to matter.

The rest of the word was swallowed as her right foot dropped.

Cammy fell.

"Hey, woah, hey!" was all Tanisha could get out as the boys starting shoving one another. Was she really going to have to step in and break up a childish shove-fight? Tanisha knew that this was definitely not the right place for that. Putting aside the whole SOTF aspect, they were right by the cliff edge, and she didn't need Jeff and/or Lorenzo going over because they were in disagreement over Lorenzo's story.

That didn't explain why Jeff also chose to shove Arjen as well. Tanisha watched as Arjen fell back, and even before Tanisha could try to help, she realized Arjen was in a specific path, and that's when her eyes widened in shock. In an instant, Arjen bumped into Cammy, who stumbled and disappeared over the edge.

"CAMMY!" Tanisha screamed as loud as she could.

She hurried to the edge of the lookout. She looked down, seeing a large gathering of trees below. It didn't matter if there were trees or if it was clear. With that height, there was no way Cammy could survive that. Maybe it was a good thing that she couldn't see Cammy from up there, cause the sight probably wasn't good at all.

"Oh my god! Oh my god!" Tanisha continued. "She...she's gone!"

She looked back to Jeff, Lorenzo, and Arjen.

"She's fucking gone!"

CAMMY!

The voice was loud, like a screeching hawk.

(Ned Jackson, continued from Waking From One Nightmare into Another)

Ned’s long trek through the wilderness had led him to a tall structure that reminded him of a pier, only located in the woods. After leaving the village, Ned decided to look around the woodlands for a vantage point, that way he could get a good idea of where everything was on this island. It was a taxing hike, but Ned found a high place to survey the island.

That’s when Ned heard a familiar voice call out a familiar name. After he had stopped to take a sip of water, he rushed up to where he heard the voice. Upon reaching the source, he spotted a couple of familiar faces. Tanisha Abbey, a friendly dancer, Lorenzo Tavares, whom he recognized for his green hair, Arjen Kramer, an anime fan on aggressive side, and Jeff Greene, a football player.

Tanisha was over at the edge of the lookout, looking distraught. The Jeff was holding a riot shield that, something Ned had seen SWAT team members hold in media, and Lorenzo looked like he was about to fight Jeff.

Ned thought to the name Tanisha shouted. Cammy. Wasn’t she one of the band geeks? What happened to her?

“Hey!,” Ned said, alerting them to his presence, “What’s going on? What happened?”

Lorenzo had to admit, it felt oh-so good to watch as the muscle-headed idiot stumbled backwards and onto the ground from Lorenzo’s shove. He must have felt so humiliated that his tough guy attitude and big words meant absolutely nothing because Lorenzo was still able to send him to the ground with minimal effort. And even better, He’d managed to not only embarrass himself, but he also managed to get poor innocent Arjen wrapped up in his toxic masculinity-fueled aggression. Both boys were on the ground, and Jeff was struggling to pull himself up and detangle the other boy from him. Lorenzo honestly could have laughed.

But he didn’t.

Instead he made sure to pull his maul free from its sheath and made sure he was prepared for whatever ol’ roid rage was planning to do next. Lorenzo had been dealing with fuckwads like him his whole life. Unfortunately, when they feel like they’ve been emasculated, they tend to go into a frenzy. It was highly unlikely Jeff would be any different from the Wyatt and Bret Carters of the world. Jerk jocks were all the same, no matter where you found one. Lorenzo would be doing all of them a service by knocking some sense into that education-starved brain of his.

Think of it as a lobotomy, only with an axe.

Jeff was up, and Lorenzo held up his maul, ready to defend. Jeff tossed Arjen aside, and rushed him like a prodded bull charged a matador. Lorenzo couldn’t help the grin that crawled onto his face. Weather it was born of a sick desire to actually take out all his aggression from the day before on this boy, or the knowledge that every time he crossed metaphorical swords with someone on this island he was gambling with his life, he didn’t know for sure. But the fact remained that a wild grin stained his face as the larger boy came barreling at him, riot shield first. Lonzo crossed the handle of the maul in front of him and braced himself for the impact.

It came harder than he anticipated.

Lorenzo crashed to the ground on his back and scrambled quickly to try and get back on his feet. The handle of the maul had held strong, and just barely stopped the shield from crashing into his already injured torso. The force behind the attack was too much for his to tank though, and his knees and elbows buckled from the sheer intensity, sending him sprawling to the ground in a heap. Now he was up. Mostly. Left foot on the ground, right knee ready to spring up to a stand at any moment. His grip on the maul was tight, and he knew exactly where he planned to plant-

The scream that ripped through the air startled him and made his focus change out of obligation.

Tanisha was standing on the edge of the lookout. Where Cammy had been only moments before. Arjen was on the ground beside her. Cammy was nowhere to be seen. Gone?! What the fuck does that mean she’s fucking gone? It took a moment, but Lorenzo’s eyes widened in shock as the literal gravity of the situation finally dawned on him. He stared slack-jawed at Tanisha, then Arjen, then at the bastard who started this entire mess.

Jeff.

“You motherfucker.” He seethed.

“You fucking tossed him into her and threw her over the ledge you goddamn incompetent asshole!” he screamed, the venom in his voice so potent it left a sour taste in his mouth.

His mind was on Cammy, of course, but it kept flashing back to the day before. The blood on his axe. Her scream of pain as he slit Sapphire open from hip to breast. The look in her eyes that haunted his sleep the entire night before. Those eyes… they wouldn’t leave him alone, goddamnit!

“You fucking scum!”

Lorenzo sprang up from the ground and charged at Jeff, paying no mind to Ned as he wandered onto the scene. Lorenzo didn’t even see him. All he could see were those eyes and Jeff’s smug face with his maul buried in it. He swung the maul at him as soon as he was in range, axe side first.

There it was, that satisfying crash of man against man. Years of defense hadn't been entirely a waste for Jeff, as he knew how to take a chump to the ground all too well. The kid was a spry one though, back on one knee in the blink of an eye. No objections from Jeff, since he'd already drawn a fist back, ready to plant it right in this bastard's...

...What?

Jeff's heart dropped when he heard Tanisha scream Cammy's name. That nerd, the one who he'd pushed away...he'd forgotten about him, let him slip by because he was distracted by this green-haired asshole! The nerd was there, right next to where Cammy had been standing, the empty space where a person had once been. Had he...he had to have...

Cammy was gone. In a second, in the blink of a friggin' eye.

He'd failed her.

He'd killed her.

Jeff heard Lorenzo's accusations, heard every one of them, but what was the point? They were all shrieking through his mind anyway. He knew that he'd have to do it eventually, that everyone here would have to die for him to win, but not like this. Not because of such a stupid, STUPID mistake. He wasn't even mad at Arjen. He'd just taken advantage of an obvious opening. It was Jeff who threw him at Cammy, it was Jeff who let his temper rule him yet again.

Lorenzo's approach snapped Jeff back to reality, and he raised his shield just as the axe-shaped hammer came crashing down at him. He wasn't ready for it, wasn't braced properly, and it was his turn to eat the dirt as the blow sent him spinning around, landing face-first. His shield slipped out of his grip, sliding partway down the hill, at the feet of the kid who'd just come walking up.

"Yeah," he groaned, shoving himself up to his knees. His left arm sent a twinge of pain all the way up his shoulder, but at least he could move it. "I am scum."

He rose to his feet, holding his left arm against his chest, trying to minimize motion with it since every little movement sent more shockwaves. He wasn't betraying that he was in pain, except with gritted teeth. He couldn't be weak, not now.

He observed his opponent, covered in wounds. Even with only one arm, he still gave himself favorable odds. But what was the point? Cammy just died, and they were still fighting? Who even cared any more? He stared at his open bag, handle of the nailbat plainly in sight, and he simply reached over his shoulder, grabbed the strap, and dropped the bag on the ground.

"I promised her that I would protect her," he said. "Figured it was the right thing to do. But it was always going to end like this, sooner or later. I was just giving her stupid hope. Hope in something that'd never come."

He didn't know who he was saying that to. It sounded cheesy, even to him. But he wasn't going to bite it without explaining himself. He deserved at least that much.

"You know that killing me's pointless. Deed's been done. No taking it back." He straightened up to stare Lorenzo down. "So whatever you do, it's on you."

Decision time, Green Hair. He could take his stupid vengeance, or maybe they could move on and find a way to make something of it.

Arjen's mouth went dry. He silently walked closer to the edge of the cliff to look down. To see if she survived like Kelly did.

"...Cammy?"

He heard a new voice but decided to ignore it. Was Cammy dead? She couldn't, right? Jeff. Jeff did this.

Tanisha looked around the scene. Lorenzo and Jeff were now trading barbs about who was to blame and what they were going to do. Tanisha could see some other guy had wandered into the area, but she could barely pay him any mind. Jeff and Lorenzo were probably going to kill each other here. Arjen was in shock, looking over the edge.

"Arjen, move away from the edge," Tanisha quietly said.

Tanisha quickly stepped away from the cliff edge. She moved the shotgun into both of her hands, keeping the barrel pointed to the ground.

"Guys, that's enough," she said to Jeff and Lorenzo. "This has already gone completely tits up, so enough posturing before someone else goes over the cliff."

Tanisha looked at both Jeff and Lorenzo. She knew this was a complete accident, but it was starting to look like Lorenzo may have earned his injuries for a reason. As for Jeff, she knew he had a temper, but there was clearly nothing to be gained if they continued fighting. Everyone here was liable to die quickly and painfully, so there had to be some way to mitigate it.

"So can we just disengage before we make this situation somehow even worse than it already is?"

Ned watched, mouth agape, as Lorenzo and Jeff continued their confrontation. Lorenzo swung what looked like an axe towards Jeff’s face, only to be deflected by Jeff’s shield. This looked like something out of an anime, but these weren’t a couple of animated characters behind a television screen, these were real people in front of him. They could actually hurt or kill each other.

Ned noticed Arjen near the edge and shimmied his way towards the boy, past the two other boys’ scuffle. He held out one of his hands to help Arjen to his feet, while the other held onto the railing.

“Here,” Ned said.

As he helped Arjen up, he looked to Tanisha, trying to stop the fight.

“She’s right,” he said, “We can’t let ourselves devolve like this. This is what the terrorists want.”

Lorenzo’s maul crashed into Jeff’s shield as the other boy attempted to block his attack at the last minute, causing his maul to slip off the glossy surface of the shield, and Jeff to lose his hold on it, sending the heavy defense boost flying out of his hand and sliding down the hill to land in front of the newly arrived Ned. Jeff’s body hit the ground again, but this time it did nothing to make Lorenzo feel any better. He stood over the sprawled out boy, his breathing labored and heavy, maul held tight in both hands as he stared him down. Jeff began to speak, and Lorenzo felt his eye twitch with every word. Some promise, Jeff. He spoke about the girl he’d just sent falling to her death with such a lack of feeling, a lack of care. It made Lorenzo feel sick. But at the same time, Lorenzo felt sick with himself.

He didn’t give a damn about Cammy. None of his anger and vitriol was in her name.

No, it was because in Jeff’s actions he saw what he’d have to do. What he decided to do. What he convinced himself was right. He saw the reality of deciding he wanted to be the last one standing, and no matter how much he told himself he could do it, no matter how much he swore he was a bad person who could do bad, awful things…

He didn’t want this.

He felt a lump developing in his throat and he did his best to choke it down. Tanisha was yelling, but he wasn’t listening. All he could think about was the death he’d just witnessed. And the eyes from yesterday. They perverted everything he saw. Everything he thought. He’d be taking those eyes to the grave with him, even if he did end up this twisted game’s victor. It was a burden he’d made on his own. And now, Jeff had done the same. They were the same.

Her name hadn’t been announced, but he knew. Deep in his heart, or whatever was left of it, he knew she couldn’t have survived those wounds for very long. He knew when he was desperately trying to wipe the blade of his maul clean of her blood. He knew when she looked at him with such audacity, such unbridled scorn and confusion. He knew she must already be dead.

He thought of his sisters. How terrible it must have been for them if they were bearing witness to all of this. How much his mother must be crying. How his father must be averting his gaze. He just wanted to be with them again. Tell them it was all worth it because he was here, back home, still alive. But…

Tyrell did his best to ruin that for him too.

If they’d heard what he said. No… when they heard it. If not them then someone. Someone would know and someone would ask questions. Make accusations. Make his family feel responsible for what he’d done. What he didn’t mean to do. How could he go back to them like this? How could he face them again, knowing that they would never look at him the same way again. Never love him the same way again.

He was snapped out of his thoughts by the scalding hot tear that fell down his cheek. He released his hold on the maul with one hand and reached up to wipe the salty fluid away. He looked down at Jeff with contempt in his eyes, but he made no further move to attack him. It no longer felt like it was worth anything. He looked up to see Tanisha, Arjen and Ned, all staring at him. He grimaced. He no longer wanted to look at any of their faces.

“Do whatever you want.” He said, his voice sounding strained and weak.

“I just don’t even care.” He turned from the group and began to walk down the hill, kicking the shield as he passed it, sending it rolling into some brush.

He just wanted to be away from everyone.

Jeff's eyes followed Lorenzo down the hill, watched him disappear from sight. He'd been cheap-shotted twice while he was distracted, and he'd never let that happen again. Never. He wouldn't stop watching the kid, not until he was sure that he was well and truly gone. Then he just stared ahead, refusing to turn to the people behind him.

He slung his bag back over his shoulder. Slowly, but not painfully. It seemed that the injury was localized to the forearm mostly. As long as he didn't move it, he'd be fine.

As long as he didn't think about anything but his arm, he'd be fine.

He tried moving it back and forth, just to see what he could get away with. Not much, judging by the shooting pain that resulted. Nothing to worry about. He'd dealt with sports injuries before. He'd just need to keep it immobilized. Probably could make do with a sling. Not that it was broken or anything, but it'd remind him not to be a dumbass about it.

He walked down to his shield, picked it up in his right hand. Thank goodness, it wasn't chipped or dented. Must have been a glancing blow, which is probably why he wasn't dead. He checked his bag, made sure the nailbat was still there. Yeah, everything seemed to be in order.

As long as he didn't think about who'd given him the nailbat, he'd be fine.

He didn't look back, didn't want to see their faces. He just adjusted the way his bags were seated on his shoulders, settled the shield into his good arm, and started walking. He wouldn’t stop walking for an hour. Going where?

Who knew. Anywhere but here.

"Jeff...Jeff did this and he ran away. I can't believe this."

Arjen balled his fists. Cammy was dead because of him and Jeff cowardly walked away. Arjen had nothing to do with this fiasco. Lorenzo walked away too. They were as cold as ice. Willing to sacrifice their love for the classmates. He looked to the people remaining and calmly stood up and walked towards them wanting to forget the last views he had on Cammy.

Tanisha watched as the tension in the moment completely evaporated. Lorenzo huffed away, and Jeff was soon going off too. It was good that they weren't fighting any more, but that didn't solve the crux of the issue. Cammy was dead, and the group was now fractured. Tanisha looked around at Arjen and Ned. Arjen was still in shock about Cammy's death, while Ned seemed to be of the same mindset as Tanisha. She lowered the gun and ran a hand through her hair.

"Oh god, this is all so fucked up," she muttered to herself.

She looked back between the cliff edge and where Jeff had run off to. One ally was dead, and the other was disappearing into the woods. Tanisha closed her eyes. This was how the game worked, wasn't it? People get stressed, people do things they shouldn't, and people die. Cammy wasn't going to be the last one to go, and it was entirely possible that Jeff could be clubbing Lorenzo to death at this moment.

Tanisha sighed, then opened her eyes.

"Ned, Arjen, we can't stay here," she said. "I don't know where we go from here, but we can't stay here."

She looked to the boys.

"Do you guys wanna come with?"

“Sure,” said Ned, “I’m down.”

After seeing Lorenzo and Jeff off, Tanisha was looking completely stressed. From what Ned could gather, Cammy had fallen off the platform and likely died from the fall’s height. He looked out at the scenery from the lookout. It was quite lovely, like a panoramic painting, almost enough to make him for get their current situation.

He looked at what he could see of the ocean. From what he could see, nothing but an endless horizon of salt water. The island was so closed off it felt like a world of it’s own, completely separate from the surrounding universe. The students were completely alone (save for the terrorists keeping watch over them).

“I just came from the village,” Ned turned to tell the other two, “I met Violet in the infirmary yesterday, but...she wound up dead.”

"Wait, why can't we stay here? I'm sick of wandering around."

Arjen couldn't believe it. Tanisha was acting like Marco, forcing Arjen to be a burro again. Walking through this island to his death. That was probably how he would be dying on this island. He'd walk so many fucking miles till he is exhausted and he'll collapse.
