Motion Isn't Meaning

Start of B19

It isn't much now, but at one time, this airfield was the life of the island. It contains a sole landing strip in the middle of an overgrown field, and the solitary air control tower nearby looms menacingly over the island. The remains of a downed aircraft sit nearby, having crashed long after the island base had been abandoned.

Dan...Dan, wake up. It's time to get up bud.

"No mom...can't...give me 4 minutes k?" Came the groggy voice of Daniel Wolfe. The sunlight filled his eyelids, and a feeling of realization came over him. He snapped up, breathing fairly hard. His mother wasn't next to him, shaking his shoulder. The memories of what happened on that bus came flooding back into his head. The coach being shot, and that overly cheery fat guy on the screen.

"So, I'm on an island with my classmates and we have to kill each other."

No matter how hard he tried he just couldn't fathom this fact, and there was no denying that it was fact. He was now stuck on an island where he'd have to compete for his life. There was nothing in his life previous to this that could have prepared him for it. His whole life just floating by, his mom's constant purchasing of Disney memorabilia, and his dad always coming into his room to listen to him play bass. The nights talking to his friends on MSN, they were now gone.

"How the hell am I supposed to play a game like this? Oh wait, they've included an instruction manual." Dan said sarcastically to himself as he opened his pack to find the booklet, food and water, and a pipewrench.

Lifting the pipewrench Dan examined it closer, finding a little 18 engraved on the handle, indicating it was an 18 inch model. Tossing the wrench to his side, Dan reached for the booklet and the map underneath it. The booklet pretty much confirmed everything he suspected, and the map indicated he was at the airfield.

Dan rose to his feet after packing the map and booklet back in his pack, while keeping the pipewrench in his right hand, and took a look around. A couple small hangars and a control tower.

Well what the hell do I do now? Go find someone and bash their face in?

Such a rhetorical question from someone who was supposed to be intelligent. His next thought confirmed the answer.

Well, to quote Rage, "Either drop the hits like de la mode or get the fuck off the commode."

((B20 start))

Harry Tsai had come to amid the twisted wreckage of some ages-old plane crash. It had taken him a moment to recover from his short relapse into shock, but for the most part he'd remained relatively calm. Back in the US he'd watched a number of clips from the previous games, even wrote music with lyrics referencing the brutal deaths of some of its participants. He knew that panicking was a good way to die early.

Harry clutched the GPS device in his hand and stared intently at it, having been quick to go through the contents of his daypack to see what he'd been issued. His brow furrowed as he familiarized himself with the toggles and buttons. Any avid watcher of SOTF knew how his now-designated weapon earned its keep in the game. The collars emitted a signal, all of them. Lucky draw; this would give him quite an advantage.

'Somebody has to win. If I make it back then everyone will know who I am. No more rejections from stuffy idiot record companies, no more working with piss-ant small time musicians...'

"Someone who fucking knows what they're doing," he hissed angrily, wiping the tiny flecks of spit that had consequently landed on the screen.

'...This is my chance to get noticed.'

Getting to his feet and shouldering the daypack, Harry cast a glance down at his attire. He wanted to look his best for the cameras; to be memorable. He decided he had the quality in spades. He had a few items of clothing in his duffel bag, but nothing of much real value given the situation. He was already dressed for the part. So all he needed now was a weapon to compliment the GPS device. There were bits of scrap metal littering the immediate area of course, so it was just a quick matter of finding one of the right shape.

'Everyone loves a powerplayer,' he thought to himself as he searched quickly in the tall grass for a suitable shiv. He finally found a suitable piece; fairly small, but pointed and fairly jagged, with a spot he could grip it without cutting himself. 'See if I'm not a household name by the end of the week.'

As he zoomed out from his own blue blip on the GPS Harry noticed another appear on the edge of the screen. He turned quickly and studied the device to get his bearings. Someone was over in the distance by the hangars, although he didn't see anyone from where he was standing so he was confident they hadn't seen him either. He was in no immediate danger, and he was risking barely anything by approaching given that he knew precisely where the other player was and could adjust his hiding place accordingly. This really was the perfect weapon.

"Time to play the game," Harry whispered, adjusting his collar and taking a deep breath before heading off toward the mysterious Mr Blip.

Dan continued to search among the plane wrecks, hoping to find someone who was still asleep.

After all, He thought, Not all of us are affected the same by knockout gas.

Looking down at this favorite Rage Against the Machine t-shirt, Dan couldn't help to think back to the last day at Southridge before the trip, and how he had jammed with Harry and Adwin, while the art girl whose name escaped him sketched.

"Damn, I wish I could have seen that sketch." Dan muttered under his breath.

Moving with a bit more caution, Dan made his way to the entrance of the control tower. Fully suspecting someone to have been dropped in there Dan readied his wrench. He was a fairly strong guy, and he knew that this wrench was a perfect melee weapon.

Dan pushed open the door but found nothing. No one was on the bottom level. Slightly disappointed, Dan climbed the winding staircase to the top of the tower, all the while hoping to find someone he could practice his mechanics skills on. Disappointment set in as Dan once again found his area of exploration to be empty. Looking down at the airfield around him, Dan could actually see for quite a ways around him, but what caught his eye was a tiny figure moving towards the tower with his hand out-stretched.

All right fucker, lets do this. Dan thought as he tore down the stairs.

With a loud bang, Dan exploded out the entrance to the tower looking for his stalker.

Harry had been sure to be cautious in his approach, holding the GPS high enough so he could see what was happening on the screen and in front of him at the same time. By the time he'd passed the row of hangars, whoever he was tracking had disappeared into the control tower overlooking the premises. He picked up the pace a bit and zoomed in as he got closer; the blip was going in circles, which more than likely indicated they were ascending the stairs.

He'd almost crossed the tarmac when suddenly the blip stopped moving, and Harry cursed under his breath as he shot a glance up to the dark windows at the top of the control tower. He'd misjudged the height in conjunction with the blip's revolutions; his target was already up there. He fixed his eyes on the screen for a moment, hoping he hadn't been spotted, but just as he'd feared the blip was now moving doubly fast as it circled in the opposite direction.

Harry broke into a run, darting through one of the many giant gaps in the dilapidated fence and making a beeline toward some barrels by the door of the tower. He ducked and checked the GPS again, just as the blip broke the circling pattern and the door flew open with a crash. That was his queue; Harry rushed at his opponent wielding the jagged piece of metal and hoping killing someone was as easy as it looked in American movies.

"All right you fuc..argh!" Dan's mucho macho battle cry had been interrupted by the feeling of sharp metal against the left side of his face. Luckily for Dan, Harry had misjudged the timing enough so the shiv wasn't buried into the side of his face, but it was enough to leave Dan with a sizable and moderately bleeding cut beside his eye.

"Cocksucker." Dan yelled as he turned towards his attacker. As he was turning he swung his right arm around with him, gripping the handle of the pipewrench tightly. Dan leveled his arm with Harry's ribs, hoping to score a crushing blow.

"Kuso!" cursed Harry as his attack nearly missed its mark altogether. It wasn't his native tongue, but it had admittedly become a habit over the years. The other guy was quick to wheel around and retaliate, and Harry's adrenaline skyrocketed as the wrench he'd been carrying came dangerously close to his ribs. He was fortunate enough to have backed up reflexatively as the weapon arced toward him.

It registered immediately that this was the bass guitarist he'd jammed with once at Southridge not long ago. Dan. Yes, that was Dan Wolfe swinging a wrench at him with the intent to fuck his shit up severely. Harry wasn't confident he could take even one hit from the heavy object, and just kept backing up without even thinking of striking back. He was in a bad spot.

Dan swung the wrench like a madman. He was beginning to get a feel for the wrench, and the balance of it. His opponent jumped back, allowing Dan to wipe some of the blood from around his left eye. This gave him the chance to finally get a look at which of his classmates he was fighting. It was the J-rock guitarist Harry with whom he was just thinking about not 10 minutes ago.

Talk about your strange coincidences.

Dan stopped in his tracks and began to scream at Harry who was backing away. It didn't matter that Harry was friendly with him, it didn't matter that they jammed, survival was what mattered, and the wound to his face let Dan know he had to be ready for anything at all times.

"COME ON!!!" Dan screamed, as he charged full speed towards his enemy. He once again swung his weapon. The wrench was now like an attachment to Dan's arm. A fistful of steel.

Dan's barrage of deadly swings ended for just a second as he wiped blood from his brow. Harry finally saw a small chance to strike. His heart going a mile a minute, he threw himself forward at his opponent with the shiv raised.

Unfortunately, Dan's big swing connected with Harry's shoulder and floored him sideways like a speeding train. He landed hard on his front, the wind thoroughly knocked out of him and a sharp pain eminating from where he'd been hit. The GPS slipped out of his grasp and clattered on the ground, and Harry frantically grabbed it again.

'Lucky that wasn't my head,' he thought to himself, glaring angrily at Dan as he planted one foot in the dirt and kicked the other out forcefully to attempt a sweep.

The fact that she was pregnant was essentially the absolute last thing on the mind of Meredith "Mary" McKay as she'd awoken on the island. It was interesting, really. Instead of panicking, like many of the other people had done upon waking up, Mary had simply sighed, seen the fact that her weapon was a somewhat floppy cross-cut saw, and had started to move. She did enough walking that the baby she was carrying wasn't a burden for her moving long distances, but all the same, it definitely limited her mobility a bit.

Not as much mobility as I would hoped to have, but oh well! Nobody said that having a baby was easy! Then again...nobody had ever said that surviving a crazy terrorist's game while carrying a baby was a walk in the park, either. But there's got to be a first for everything, so let's get to it! I'll be an invaluable addition if anyone needs to build an outhouse, what with this handy-dandy saw of mine!

As she walked through the bushes from her starting point, she'd shaken it up and down a few times, causing it to wobble and make a really strange, and yet amusing sound, the sound of wobbly steel flopping about. It had always made her laugh when her dad had played around with his tools like this, and to have such a saw at least meant that she could entertain herself.

What a morbid thought, that one. 'Well, I died, but at least I got to play with the power tools before I went!

As she walked towards what looked to be a clearing, she'd giggled a bit. She was in such a shitty situation, and she knew that, but she tried not to let it bother her. By nature, she was a positive person, and even getting pregnant from a random tryst and having the father reject her completely wasn't able to slow her down. She still maintained that same old positive spirit.

The big question, she knew, was how long could she possibly keep it up? Her habit of suppressing all of her negative emotions was great on the outside, but it made for some nasty blow-ups, and Mary hoped that she'd be able to suck everything in and not expel it all until after she managed to get out, escape, or whatever.

Because that's exactly what she was going to do - escape. Of that, she was certain. She'd decided the moment she'd awoken, and just knew that the only thing necessary were to find some of the smartest minds of her graduating class, and get them to stop killing each other for just a few minutes so that they could figure out a way to get out. If there was anything her father had told her, it was that NO system was perfect, and there was always a flaw. Even the most well-build systems had some sort of flaw that once discovered, could be exploited.

As she walked towards the wreckage of the airplane, hoping to find someone or something that might help her out, still making that funny sound with her saw, she saw what looked to be two individuals in a type of mortal combat. Gasping a little, she saw that she recognized both of them. As a musician, she was part of the music council and recognized Dan Wolfe right away. He wasn't huge into the music events, but Mary knew who he was, as he was a fairly talented musician himself. The strange part was the guy he was fighting - Harry Tsai, another musician, who she could have sworn she'd seen practicing with Dan as she'd left school on the week before the trip.

Well, I'll have to just get them to stop trying to kill each other. I'd bet they're both terrified, and are just running on pure adrenaline. Pffft. Men, and their testosterone. Always starting fights with each other!

As she waddled (for lack of a better word) towards the fight, she knew that she should be scared, for walking up to a fight was probably stupid, but she knew that unless she intervened somehow, one or both of these boys would be dead in the next little while - and she needed all the help she could get. Standing a couple of meters away, Mary looked at the grapping boys, and shrugged to herself. What could she do? She supposed that a good start would be to yell at them.

"DANIEL! HARRY! WHAT ON EARTH DO YOU BOYS THINK THAT YOU'RE DOING!? YOU GUYS ARE FRIENDS! For goodness sakes! Stop trying to gut each other!"

Distressed that they might not listen, Mary brought out what she hoped to be a secret weapon - the silly sounding saw. Clenching the handle in both hands, she held it out in front of her and wobbled it up and down, making a loud, obnoxiously silly sound that echoed throughout the area.

There. If that doesn't get them laughing, then I don't know what will...I'd hate to think that anyone here is past saving...or has had such a breakdown so quickly!

Dan was able to avoid the sweep from Harry, jumping back a couple of strides. They once again were in a stand off mere metres from each other.

Suddenly, from seemingly out of nowhere, Mary McKay came bounding up to them screaming for them to stop their fight, all the while grasping an extremely floppy saw.

"Mary, back the fuck off before you get hurt." Dan growled through his teeth, all the while staring a hole right through Harry.

Dan knew that if Mary didn't take his advice, he would have no choice but to remove her from the equation, and the fact that he had no problem with it kind of scared him.

Harry's sweep missed but at least it got Dan to back off just a bit. He scrambled quickly to his feet, trying to ignore the painful throb in his shoulder.

"Motherfucker," he cursed under his breath, his grip on the metal shiv tightening. Dan Wolfe had been an unlucky draw for his first encounter, as had the relatively open airstrip for his starting location. He needed to duck out of this losing fight while he had the chance and start playing smart. The GPS was the best weapon available in the right hands, in the right environment.

A third party had shown up and immediately made herself the centre of attention. While Harry was a little confused and wondered if the girl with the saw might've completely missed the point of why they were all on the island to begin with, he had to admit that this was a good opportunity to take his leave. He was fairly confident he could outrun Dan anyway. Turning back to Wolfe and giving him a quick glare first, Harry darted without a word toward the distant trees.

Dan watched as Harry bolted, not overly impressed that Harry got the last (extremely broken English) words in.

Turning back towards Mary, blood still running down his face from his laceration, his expression turned much colder.

"You see what you did. You've just caused what I considered Obstacle #1 in my path to winning and getting the hell out of here to get away before I could finish the job. So effectively Mary, since I have no chance in hell of catching the bastard, you are going to take his place as Obstacle #1."

It was corny as hell, but Dan didn't care. He rushed at Mary. His intent was to ground her into a mount position. Even if he missed, he knew that a girl like Mary more than likely couldn't do jack with that flimsy saw.

As Dan turned, cursed, and then turned upon her, Mary instantly began to panic. The fact that she was now the only thing within the sights of the aggressor of the fight (of that she was now sure), and the fact that it happened to be Daniel himself scared her a bit. She wasn't sure what to say to him as he spat out some thing about obstacles and then started to run at her. Stepping backwards in shock, Mary quickly held up the jagged edge of the cross-cut saw in front of her.

Well, I have a saw. Saws are usually supposed to be sharp. So, if he runs at me and hits me in the saw, he should cut himself. He cuts himself, and then I can run away, because poor Daniel's obviously out of his mind!

"Daniel! Stop! I'm no threat to anyone, you know!"

It wasn't much, but she hoped it could manage to dissuade him from either attacking her or hurting himself on the saw.

Dan's mind was to consumed with unexplainable anger to hear Mary's desperate pleas. He brought the wrench down, but found that his arm had sprung a red leak before he made contact with her skull. Grabbing his arm and wincing slightly, he saw that a part of Mary's saw now had his blood on it.

"Just give up Mary, we're all going to die anyways, just get it over with." Dan growled.

Dan once again lunged at her, this time leading with his left elbow in hopes of deflecting the saw away and opening up a hole with which he could cave Mary's forehead in.

((Continued from From Serenity to Shame))

The jungle had been filled with upturned roots, dangling vines, and low-hanging branches, and Khrysta had gotten her fair share of scrapes and bruises stumbling through the darkness. She had tripped and fallen several times, and her knees were sore and probably scraped from the accidents. Still, she pressed forward, and finally, she could see what appeared to be the treeline. A relieved sigh escaped her lips as she slowed her pace to a jog and then stopped near the treeline.

Her eyes cast back into the darkness where she could hear Corbin running to catch up. The blonde-headed girl allowed herself to double-over for a moment and inhaled deeply, trying to catch her breath. She took the opportunity to brush the filth that had accumulated on her jeans off and reached up to once again tighten her ponytail. She wasn't quite sure where they had ended up, but she was definitely glad to finally be out of that mess of vines and roots that they called a jungle.

She turned to say something to Corbin, and that was when she heard it.

Khrysta's mouth closed in mid-sentence and her head swung around. The blonde squinted to peer outside of the treeline without actually exiting the confines of the trees, but from where she was standing, she couldn't see anything but a somewhat overgrown field. As her eyes panned to the right, she noticed tarmack and a large tower breaking the otherwise flat ground. All at once, she realized where she was -- the airfield.

She could have sworn that in the dead silence of the night, she could hear voices. She peered around, careening her neck out and searching for the voices. The first one sounded like a man, but she couldn't make out what he was saying. The next one, though, was female, and very distinctly in trouble. Her voice was quite a bit louder than the other had been and was pleading with "Daniel" to stop.

"Corbin..." Khrysta barked, "Someone's in trouble out there."

Khrysta definitely wasn't the type of person to stick her own neck on the chopping block for other people, but the fact that this Daniel boy seemed to be attack someone who was pleading for their life simply didn't sit right with her. She moved out of the treeline quietly and ran to the cover of a plane that seemed to have crashlanded nearby. From her vantage point, she could see the two fighting.

She had a few classes with Dan Wolfe, but she'd never spoken to the other student. He had always seemed nice enough, and she knew he was heavily into music, and, if she remembered correctly, in a band of some sort. The other girl was a bit more familiar too her. Mary McKay. She'd had conversations with Mary on a few occassions, and she knew the girl to be extremely nice and always looking out for others before herself.

Perhaps the thing that bothered Khrysta the most about the fact that Dan was viciously attacking Mary was the fact that Mary was pregnant. Somehow, it almost seemed inhumane that someone could attack a pregnant girl who quite obviously couldn't defend herself. Dan appeared to have some kind of wrench that he was swinging around wildly, trying to strike the girl with it. Mary's weapon was a saw, but didn't seem to be doing too much good against Dan's assault.

"Dammit," Khrysta muttered, looking back toward the jungle for a moment before turning her attention back to Mary and Dan.

Walk away now, and Mary's death is as much your fault as it is Dan's, Khrysta. You might not be able to take him on yourself, but Corbin's got an M16, and Dan would be a damn fool to go up against it. You can't just stand by and do nothing. This isn't right, and you know it.

"Dammit..." she repeated again, even more frustratedly.

Corbin... you'd better back me up on this, or I'll hunt you down myself.

"HEY!" Khrysta yelled at the top of her lungs, dropping her pack behind the downed aircraft before moving out into the open where she was visible to the other two, "What the hell do you think you're doing, picking on that poor girl? She can't even defend herself from you! Does that make you feel like a big man, Dan? Does picking on defenseless women make you feel good about yourself? Maybe you should try me on for size!"

Calling out someone who's quite obviously stronger than you and packing a heavy-duty wrench was a scary thing, but Khrysta wouldn't let the intimidation she felt show across her face. Instead, she remained placid and readied herself from the onslaught Dan was probably going to dish out. She prayed to whatever diety existed that Corbin would back her up, otherwise, she'd just signed her own death sentence.
