Have You Lost Me?

The cafeteria for George Hunter High is on the left side of the main hallway of the school. It is a large space with many circular tables with chairs arranged around them. The food served is known for being of a higher quality than stereotypical school food. There is also a pair of vending machines at the back corner than dispense snacks and drinks respectively, alongside a water fountain. Microwaves are made available at lunch hours for the students who elect to bring meals from home.

Have You Lost Me?

((Jonah Heartgrave continued from Let's Get Physical! ))

Jonah ran his hand through his hair and sighed deeply. As he walked he looked down at the ground, watching his sneakers push up dust and kick pebbles. He shoved his hands into his pockets and made the face of someone who was told they'd won a big prize that was then given a 5% off coupon for picture frames.

He'd had one of those days where everything seemed to bother him. Jonah was on his way to meet a friend who texted to come around the cafeteria after school if he didn't have any pressing engagements. Today he did not, which was something of a rarity.

He thought about the little things people did during the day to build up into a feeling of slightly annoyance in him. However, he also felt guilty for being annoyed, aware that his friends, classmates and teammates cared about him and that it wasn't their intention. Jonah shifted the backpack he was carrying by shrugging his shoulders. It felt like there was a cloudy day in the back of his chest.

While mulling over these feelings, he was pulled back into awareness when his foot hit something soft. Jonah made a light "Hmm?" and bent down to pick up the item.

It was a red cardigan. He lifted the garment in front of him, grasping the shoulders and holding it out at arms length. It looked to be in good shape and wasn't dirty. It looked like a fairly nice sweater. Jonah couldn't tell if it was a men's or women's cardigan, but based on its condition it could not have been on the ground for very long.

"If I had to guess, I'd say it's probably not quite your colour. Might work great as a flag, though."

The voice piped up from behind Jonah, its owner choosing to announce himself prior to actually engaging the boy examining the mystery garment. Of course, for Morgan Dragosavich, his voice entering a room before he did was usually just an assumed fact. Sometimes, people knew that he was coming before he did.

So here he was.

((Morgan Dragosavich continued from Five Crooked Lines))

Closing the distance between him and Jonah, Morgan closed the gap between the two, coming around to stand a couple of feet to his right. Of the sights that he'd expected to see as he lackadaisically made his way around school at the end of the day, seeing one of his classmates in deep contemplation over a sweater wasn't one of them. There were occasionally strange sights to see at George Hunter High School, but this was one that was mundanely unusual - if that even made sense. Jonah wasn't the kind of guy that Morgan would have picked as confused by high fashion, though he wasn't exactly Giorgio Armani when it came to how he dressed. Hell, who was Morgan kidding, neither was he. But still, this was an unusual sight to see and if there was one thing that was bound to attract his attention, it was weird shit.

Morgan quickly glanced down at the time on his phone. School had ended barely half an hour prior, and he'd been meeting with the Ms. Yan about his upcoming venture to the caves. She'd expressed a few post-agreement concerns to him, and he'd spent quite a bit of time trying to allay her fears. Nodding at Jonah as he came to a rest beside him, he took a glance at the red sweater himself, raising an eyebrow before he looked back at his classmate.

"Looks expensive, too. Gift from a secret admirer or something?"

Jonah was surprised by the presence of Morgan and stood up straighter for a moment before seeing the other boy. He relaxed again and his face spread into a wry smile.

"Me? Admirer? Who'd like someone as boring as me?" he said, half smiling, but with a touch of embarrassment as if it were a true statement he was trying to cover with the veneer of a joke.

Jonah looked back down at the sweater and then looked around the cafeteria which was empty this time of day. Most everyone had gone home and anyone who hadn't was at a club, team or in the library. He bit his lip, looked at the garment and then looked back at Morgan.

"I think someone lost it, but it doesn't look like there's anyone around."

He bundled up the seater and put it under his arm.

True to form, Morgan took in Jonah's self-deprecating joke and replied in kind with a reference that was completely off the beaten path. Moving his gaze from the sweater to Jonah, he made his eyes go all wild, and mimed removing a hood.

"It's me Jonah! It was me all along, Jonah!"

Smirking at his own wit, his face quickly fell as he realized that it was probably lost on his fellow schoolmate. Sometimes, the oddest things stuck with you as you fell into a Youtube hole late at night. Normalizing his face once more, Morgan gave it a once-over himself. Jonah had been correct, this was not a shitty-quality Walmart purchase. This sweater was actually a pretty high-end sort (one he'd never have been able to afford, let alone lose).

"No, but seriously... someone's gonna be pissed when they realize they've left that behind. Kind of hard to tell who it probably belongs to, looks kind of unisex. What does it say on the tag?" Morgan gestured to the garment with his chin.

Jonah stood straight up and leaned back from Morgan a bit in response to his sudden outburst. He smiled, half out of nerves and half because even if he didn't know what he was doing, it was still pretty funny.

He balled up his his free hand not holding the sweater and put it by the corner of his mouth, smiling still at the other boy. Jonah didn't want to admit he didn't know what it was he was referencing. He didn't want to seem uncool, and he also didn't want Morgan to think the bit was a failure. That wouldn't be very encouraging.

"Like I'd mistake you for some other young man," he said, emitting a single, deep chuckle.

At the query, Jonah fumbled with the sweater for a bit before locating a tag. It just said that it was from The Gap and that it was a size L.

"Not much to go on," he said, frowning. He looked up again and the empty cafeteria.

"Maybe we can find whoever lost it."

Privately, he hoped that the owner's parents wouldn't be upset that they lost the sweater. If he could help avoid that, he had to try.

"Let's look around. You can tell me about whatever thing you wanted to talk about?"

Morgan laughed at Jonah's response, more along with him then anything. It was obvious that the other boy didn't pick up the ancient wrestling reference, but that was okay. Morgan's humour was sometimes off the beaten path, and honestly had he not fallen into a Youtube hole a few nights ago where he'd watched a much-younger Vince McMahon wrench a hood off of his head in a wrestling ring and proclaim himself the "higher power", he'd have never known the reference either.

It was still hilarious.

As far as the ownerless sweater, Morgan looked at it with befuddlement. There was no one in the immediate vicinity aside from the two of them, and one would think that if you forgot an article of clothing like this, you'd come running back, hoping to find it before it got donated to the lost and found, or taken home by some less-than-ideal third party. He nodded in agreement to Jonah. What the hell - school was more or less out for the day, and he didn't have any plans. He knew Jonah to be someone who was all for a good deed or two, and if this was his weekly good deed, then yeah, that worked quite nicely.

"Let's do it, man. I bet they couldn't have gotten far."

As the pair started to walk off, Morgan's eyes widened as recalled the text that he'd sent. He had been meaning to meet up with Jonah anyway, to discuss a far more important plan.

"Right! So you know, for science class this year, we have to write that essay...?"
