Life Between The Lines

#1

Post by Shiola »

Tyrell emerged from the venue, the cool air refreshing after the heat and din of a packed concert. In spite of the season he wore a tank-top, and relished the feeling of wind on bare skin. The original band logo, a Cthulhu-inspired skull, had long since faded and into the deep red shirt, and it was riddled with holes and wear. It only ever saw use if Ty was going to a concert, and it bore the scars of having done so. His black jeans were, on the other hand, quite intact save for a tear in the knee where he’d climbed a fence. Suffice to say, he looked the part for someone standing outside of a small dark concert venue.

I need a strong drink, or a fight, or something. Fuck that was amazing.

He paced slowly on the sidewalk, sidestepping smokers and people waiting for cab rides home. The band was called Malthusian Catastrophe, a post-hardcore band out of Nashville. Some people at school claimed the bassist went to GHHS, but Ty didn’t care. They were small enough that they played at hole-in-the-wall venues that couldn’t be bothered to look too closely at fake IDs. They had the right kind of energy – frenetic and angry and thoughtful. It was what he liked about the genre; it was aggressive enough he didn’t have to listen to the lyrics, but when he did it was usually rewarding.

I almost liked the gentler songs as much as the really hardcore stuff. Almost.

Though they’d gotten high and drank beforehand, it was the mosh pit that really intoxicated him. Even a few minutes out of the show, he continued to feel an almost uncontrollable rush. It was hard to stop moving, to stop his mind from racing. He wanted to go somewhere and get into trouble, to live as quickly as he felt he should.

There are places to be, places where we aren’t allowed to go.

The last song in the set had been a cover of “Trusty Chords” by Hot Water Music One line kept resonating with him:

“I hate this place, but I love these chords!”

This is what he lived for; these kinds of places, these kinds of people. It made living in Chattanooga bearable. It was a space of their own, somewhere where it didn’t matter who you were or what you wanted out of life. If you wanted loud music and could lose yourself in a crowd, you were accepted. It made him feel his age, when everything else in his life was some goddamned adult responsibility he didn’t want or deserve. This kind of night felt like home in a way no other time or place did.

Ty searched the crowd for his friends, and eyes caught a hint of green hair some distance. He probably knew Lorenzo the best of the people he’d gone to the concert with. The guy was a natural shit-disturber, which he could more than appreciate. The first time they’d met ended in a scrap, which itself ended in laughter and an exchange of contact info and the names of bands they’d liked. He wouldn’t say they were close¸ but if they were anything alike he could understand why Lorenzo was a bit emotionally distant. Ty preferred it that way, as it made it easier to be on the level and enjoy nights like these without too many complications.

As far as the very particular way they weren’t alike was concerned, Ty couldn’t say he minded whatever close attention he received from Lorenzo. It was flattering and he found it fun to be coy about it. He wasn’t particularly opposed to the prospect of being attracted to other guys, he'd just never felt anything he’d describe as attraction. What mattered was Lorenzo was the kind of person who’d enthusiastically agree to the question - “Hey, wanna go do some crimes?” That was the kind of person Ty felt comfortable calling a friend.

Locking eyes with him in the crowd, Ty waved him over. The night was just beginning.

[Lorenzo Tavares Memories Continued From One Way or Another]

As far as concerts go, Lorenzo had definitely been to better, but then again he’d also been to way worse, so he’d take what he could get. The music was decent, and the pit was great. He took a pretty hard hit to the face at one point, but he was pretty sure he’d knocked his fair share of others around himself, so it didn't really bother him. Honestly, that hit in the face had riled him up like crazy, and the adrenaline pumping through his veins kept him at one hundred percent for the rest of the night. He pushed his way through the crowd of concert-goers to get out of the sauna-like establishment and into the cool air of the night. The cool breeze when he finally emerged made his skin prickle, and made his nips harden like a motherfucker. As his sleeveless Tool tee ruffled in the wind and rubbed against the hardened nubs he felt a chill go up his spine and he had to remind himself (and the brain in his pants) that he’d just had his fill of that kind of activity. He felt his black skinny jeans tighten in the crotch for a second before the cool breeze stopped it in its tracks. He should've brought a fucking jacket, damn it got cold out. At least he wore boots instead of chucks, of his feet would be frozen too.

As Lorenzo stepped away from the crowd of people exiting the venue, he quickly pulled out a cigarette and a lighter and took a deep pull once he lit it. He felt his whole body relax with the release of the smoke from his lungs. That was exactly what he needed after the night he’d had. He felt like he was drenched in sweat, and it wasn’t just from the dancing. As he watched the crowd of people disperse looking for the group he came here with, he spotted the guy he’d just had an exciting encounter with in the bathroom not even an hour ago. The guy locked eyes with Lorenzo and smiled discreetly at him. Lorenzo winked back and continued to look for his companions while smoking his cigarette.

The guy had been pretty attractive. Definitely older, maybe in his late twenties. Hot tattoos on his arms and a sick septum piercing. He also had some pretty big gauges, which was a total turn on. They didn’t really have the room in the scummy stall to do too much, but Lorenzo was still pretty satisfied having dropped a load in the guy. He smirked to himself thinking how the next person in there must have found the dirty condom on the floor and freaked. Lorenzo took another pull from his cigarette and continued to scan the crowd for any sign of the others. Where the hell were they? Finally his eyes locked on a giant waving him down from across the crown and he happily made his way towards the other boy.

“Yo, what’s up sexy. Where you been hiding? Feel like I haven't seen you for hours.” Lorenzo smirked and playfully punched Tyrell in the arm when he finally made his way over to him. Tyrell was a good name for a tree, and even Lorenzo felt short next to this tank of a man. He looked up at the other boy and smiled.

“I personally had a great time. Pulled some quality A-S-S if you know what I mean.” He laughed and took another drag from his smoke. “So did we lose the others?”

>> Axel Fontaine continued from youngblood

Letting Axel get drunk and high on the same night was not usually a great idea.

It hadn't turned out too badly this time, though. He hadn't fucked anyone inadvisable unless there was a really huge gap in his memory, his nose hadn't been re-broken, and he hadn't seriously hurt anyone else. As far as he knew, anyway. He'd got into it a bit with some big dude in the pit who'd for whatever reason thought it was a great idea to kick him in the back of the leg; said big dude was way too fucking trashed to be an actual threat and had probably just nailed Axel with his foot on accident, but he'd thrown hands anyway, because what else were concerts for? Sure, the music was pretty good. Company was pretty good, too. He'd lost track of Lorenzo somewhere in the mix, chances were he'd gotten laid sometime in the last few hours (Axel was only a little jealous), and he'd lost Tyrell somewhere toward the end, but they'd all meet up outside the venue. Night was still young, after all. He could use another drink.

Andy, at least, he hadn't lost. Axel would make a joke about how he couldn't keep his eyes off him, but it would ring a little too true to be funny. He took another look around the venue before the two of them had headed out. Fond memories. His band had torn this place the fuck up a few times—okay, maybe an overstatement, their shows had been smaller than this one and this one wasn't exactly huge, but the people there had had a damn good time, they'd made sure of it. Pretty sure Tyrell and Lorenzo had both hit up their last show here, actually, which meant they'd inevitably be comparing it to this one, but whatever. Malthusian Catastrophe was fine, but they weren't the Deadbeats.

He took a cigarette and his lighter out of his pocket as they headed out; the place was full of smoke, but he always seemed to be a bit too close to another body to light up without lighting someone on fire. He lit the cigarette and inhaled as he opened the door with his other hand, exhaling into the cool outside air. He shivered, having not noticed before now just how sweaty he was. The pit would do that to you. Was fucking cold now that he wasn't surrounded by people and energy, though. Another reason for another drink.

"Fuck me," he muttered, holding his cigarette in his mouth as he untied his flannel from around his waist and shrugged it on. It helped, at least a little. He glanced around, looking for the rest of his company, and didn't have much trouble. Tyrell was basically impossible to miss at any distance. Lorenzo was there, too, and the smirk on his face told Axel he wasn't wrong about the getting laid thing. Predictable dude. He motioned toward Andy to follow as he cleared the distance between them.

"Yo. Yoooo." He waved on his approach, standing between the other two, making room for Andy at his side. "Good show, yeah? Not as good as our last one, but y'know. Nobody's perfect." He exhaled another puff of smoke in Lorenzo's general direction as he looked at him, figuring he was smoking too so it was fine, right? He grinned at him lazily. "Lost you early, Ren. Busy?"
"Well, Fenris, the King of Gossip. We meet again."

((Andy Silverman continued from youngblood))

It had been too fucking long since Andy rode this kind of high.

Not a literal high, though he was nice and buzzed from drinking. Too crowded to smoke in the venue, and Andy didn't have any weed on his person anyhow, though he felt like he'd gotten a bit of a contact high from some of the guys he'd been rubbing elbows with. Mostly, though it was just the adrenaline rush from the music and the mosh. Axel, predictably, had gotten into a scrap, and of course Andy was right there to back him up. What the hell else were bros for?

Good drink, good music, good fight, good friends. Andy had just won Connect Four, which meant he was also the uncontested winner of the night. Bar maybe Lorenzo who had disappeared at some point to probably stick it in some stranger's butt, but whatever. Andy wasn't here to judge, and that kind of score wasn't the score he was keeping tonight.

He slung one arm around Axel's shoulders as they caught up to Ty and Lorenzo outside the venue. Two pairs of two was good; four had always been one of his favorite numbers. "You guys see the fucking guy who tried to step to us in the pit? Wasn't the same guy that Lorenzo went off with, right?"

Probably not, but Andy hadn't seen who or what Lorenzo was getting up to. As usual, he was just throwing his two cents of plastic pirate coins in to back up Axel's shit-talking.

Tyrell couldn't help but snicker at Lorenzo's choice of adjective. It flattered him in a way he imagined most men would be wildly uncomfortable with, which is part of the reason he enjoyed it.

"Heh, I'll bet you did. I'm almost jealous - oh hey, there they are."

Spotting Axel first, he was suddenly reminded that he was bereft of cigarettes. He imagined he could probably bum one from the others if he felt the urge, but for now the buzz from the show was enough. Axel seemed to think it wasn't that great, but it was probably his own bias from playing the venue earlier. Plus, that Deadbeats show -was- pretty fucking good. Ty got to help a bouncer toss out someone who decided that the mosh pit was a good place to throw a few fists in earnest, and got a few shots of tequila out of doing so. So worth memory in his estimation, even if he probably enjoyed himself tonight a little bit more.

He chuckled as Axel seemed to know exactly what Lorenzo had been up to, and shot Lorenzo an amused look. "Oh, you know he was."

Catching Andy following from the crowd, locked eyes and watched him walk over. Being tall had all sorts of advantages, and being a beacon to friends in a crowd was definitely one of them. He shook his head at Andy's inquiry to the no-name fuckface in the pit. Ty had probably run into him at some point and like most people who weren't his size, wasn't the better for it.

"Nah, Ren's got better taste than that." He shot a quick glance in Axel's direction, unable to resist a smile. "It doesn't matter now, anyways. I dunno about you guys but I'm far too sober at this point in the night. Anyone got any terrible ideas? If not I'm just gonna say we walk that way and see what happens." Ty pointed down the road, in a direction he was certain would contain something abandoned or at the very least bereft of people in the evening.

Lorenzo laughed and elbowed Tyrell in the side when he said he was jealous. Tyrell spotted the rest of their group and Lorenzo smirked at the sight of them. Lorenzo continued to pull at his cigarette as he and Tyrell waited for Axel and Andy to make their way across the sea of people exiting the venue and over to them. Axel looked as if he’d had a bit too much fun, and was slurring and making eyes at him the moment her reached them. He started going on about how this band wasn’t as good as when his band played there last, and Lorenzo couldn’t deny the truth in that.

“Yeah it’s been a while since your last show, when are you guys back here?”

Lorenzo was double sure Axel was half in the bag when he heard him call him Ren. Only drunk Axel got that familiar with Lorenzo, and he couldn’t lie and say he disliked it. It was much more fun when Axel was drunk enough to be comfortable around him, then they could actually act like they were friends. Sober Axel just pretended he didn’t exist. Axel blew some smoke in his direction, and Lorenzo could read between the lines pretty easily. He was basically asking if he had enough in him for a second round. Loreno’s lips curled into a devious smile and he threw a quick wink Axel’s way in response. It was always good to have a end of night plan, and Axel was as good a plan as any, but the night was still young, and it was more fun to string him along until the point he was begging for it anyway.

Andy asked if they’d seen the fight he and Axel had gotten themselves into in the pit, and wondered if Lorenzo went off with the guy that they fought with. Lorenzo scoffed in feigned-offence, but before he had a chance to tell Andy he was mistaken, Tyrell jumped in and shot the whole thing down. Tyrell was a good dude to have in your corner, and at least he knew Lorenzo had good taste. He grinned at the big lug beside him and took the last drag from his cigarette before stomping it out below his feet. Tyrell suggested they move this party elsewhere, and Lorenzo agreed. He pulled a small plastic vial from his pocket and flashed it to the group.

“A walk suits me just fine. Plus, I saved something for after-concert festivities.” He grinned like a madman and popped the cap off of the vial, sliding the four tightly rolled joints out and into his hand.

“I’ve got four J’s left. Courtesy of my sister’s high-end stash.” He wiggled his eyebrows at the three boys around him and slid all but one joint back into the vial, closing it up and slipping it back into his pocket.

“Let’s smoke this as we come up with some ideas. A walking J is the best J.” Lorenzo pulled out his lighter and lit the joint before making his way in the direction Tyrell pointed, taking a long drag from the J and passing it off to whoever was behind him.

The fact that all four of them were present, accounted for and standing up relatively straight after the last few hours was a fucking miracle, one that would hopefully be negated in the very near future. Axel would have to be blind to miss the look on Lorenzo's face, and hey, having a nightcap planned ahead of time was never a bad idea, but the night was still young, and leaving Andy and Tyrell in the lurch before all of them were good and fucked up would be a dick move even if he wanted to. All that said, even with how fucked up he already was, he still rose an eyebrow when Lorenzo lit up barely a few steps from the venue.

"Dude. Like, I'm with you, but let's move a bit first, yeah? Let's head river-ways, s'always empty there this time of night. Maybe shelve the joint for like, three blocks."

He wasn't the paranoid type, and the crowd around here wasn't exactly gonna be the type to narc, but running into a cop car on the way over to the riverfront would be a pretty abrupt night-ender.

Axel started walking, not really bothering to actually point the group toward the river, mostly because who the fuck knew where anything even was without Google Maps and his phone had died like an hour ago. Which was fine. He had no idea how he was gonna get home after all this, but that was also fine. Worst case scenario he passed out in a gutter somewhere and that was a problem for future Axel.

"Hey, I'm here for it." Andy released his grip on Axel and went for the joint Lorenzo offered. Worst-case scenario, he chucked it somewhere and ran. Wouldn't be... well, actually it would be the first time he'd run from the cops with drugs on his person, surprisingly enough, but hey. He playfully elbowed Axel for wanting to be the cautious one for once.

"Ideas aren't my thing, man, but I don't have anywhere to be." Andy took a long drag, falling into step as they moved off as a group, and then held it out to nobody in particular.

A good high was a different sort of comedown, yeah?

"Best kind of walking, too."

Tyrell reached for the joint and took a short drag before handing it off to Axel. "This is probably far enough. Figure worst comes to worst we can chuck it in the river and claim ignorance. If a pig has it in his head to fuck with us there isn't much we can do about it anyways."

He immediately noticed the high starting to take effect, amplifying the effects of the booze he'd had earlier. It was a pleasant tingling sensation in his arms and legs and the feeling like he couldn't quite think past what was going on in his head at that immediate moment. It was a good feeling, though he knew in situations like this he'd either say nothing, or wouldn't be able to shut up. This was strong stuff.

"Well, I'm feeling it. Thanks Lorenzo, y'all are getting crazy fucked up Ty tonight."

Spotting a construction site in the distance, he pointed it out to his friends. It was a set of town-houses being built on the waterfront, "harbor-front" homes that rich people fought over. They weren't quite done, with several of the houses only wooden frames. It wasn't hard to imagine setting fire to them in their current state, a cathartic fuck you to the wealthy bastards.

They'd just build it back up anyways.

"Guys - half-built houses for rich folks? Doubt anyone's gonna get all up in our shit there."

“Don’t be lame, Axel.” Lorenzo teased as Andy took the joint from him.

It wasn’t like they were gonna get caught with a tiny joint. Besides, even if they DID run into a cop, it was easy enough to swallow a joint that big. Plus the fact that they were underage drinking would probably get them into more trouble that the small amount of weed would. Lorenzo pulled a cigarette out of his pack and lit it up. At least this way it might cover up the fact they were smoking weed a little. And hopefully it would unbunch Axel’s panties. Tyrell had the joint now, and passed it back to Lorenzo. He took it with a smile. It had been a while since he’d seen super fucked up Ty, and he’d been itching to see the tall dude in all his reckless glory. Lorenzo took a quick hit from the J before holding it out to Axel, hoping the other boy would finally partake.

“C’mon, relax it’s all good. Promise.” He winked and grinned as he let the other boy take it from his outstretched hand.

Andy didn’t have any ideas for what they should do, and Axel’s idea to head towards the river was as good as any, he supposed. The riverbank might be empty around this time, but cops still liked to annoy the shit out of anyone who hung around there at night. Some kind of bullshit to just ruin everyone’s day, that’s what pigs did best after all. The group headed in the direction of the riverbank anyway. Before long Ty spoke up with a brilliant plan of action. Lorenzo felt his inner delinquent (inner; who was he kidding) get excited as hell. Fuck yeah they should break into one of those slick ass new developments.

“Hell yeah, Ty!” Lorenzo was hyped up as hell, the weed mixing in nice with the buzz he already had going.

“Let’s fucking do it! It’s better than being out in the open, right?” He turned to Axel and Andy, nodding at the two to try and help convince them.

Oh shit. Oh, shit. Was he the buzzkill? He was the fucking buzzkill. Jesus Christ.

Protesting would make it worse. Better to shut the fuck up and hope no one gave him more shit for it. He took the joint without protest, wondering what he'd had a stick up his ass for, anyway. Who was gonna narc on them? Seemed like everyone in at least a 100-yard radius was fucked up. He glanced at Andy, glanced back at the venue shrinking in the distance.

Oh, right. Last time they were here they'd almost gotten busted. You'd think Andy'd defend him at least, but he'd been even more fucked up than Axel himself was at the time, so he'd probably forgotten all about it. Lucky bastard.

"Works for me," he said before taking a pull. Try not to burn anything down, he thought, but didn't say, because someone else was gonna have to be the buzzkill on this one. Besides, if they burned some rich fuck's vacation house down, was that really a bad thing?

Andy didn't need much convincing. "I already said I'm game, didn't I?" Hadn't he? Yeah, he had. He wasn't quite fucked up enough yet to forget what he'd said five seconds ago.

Lit joint plus bare wood was probably a bad idea, but he'd also already said he wasn't the ideas guy of this operation. Anyway, if it burned down, it took the evidence they'd been there with it, yeah? Yeah. Made sense. Andy nodded to himself, satisfied with his explanations, before realizing that nobody else had heard them. Oh well.

He held his hand out for the joint again when Axel finished taking a drag. "Somebody lead the way, I guess."
"Art enriches the community, Steve, no less than a pulsing fire hose, or a fireman beating down a blazing door. So what if we're drawing a nude man? So what if all we ever draw is a nude man, or the same nude man over and over in all sorts of provocative positions? Context, not content! Process, not subject! Don't be so gauche, Steve, it's beneath you."
