((Clara Micallef continued from There'll Always Be an England))
Well, fuck, this was really happening. People were killing and people were dying - though from the announcement that there was only one murderer running around so far. His name still stuck in her head - Fabiano. She had gone to primary school with a boy by that name... what a little shit that kid was! Despite the fact that she hadn't seen him in almost a decade, the memories of those days still sent a flash of resentment into her mind. It was a good thing that the killer guy's last name was different, or he might have found himself next on the list of assholes to deal with after Ballcap Bitch and her little boytoy.
Speaking of that particular undertaking, however...
Clara shot a quick glance behind her to confirm that her travelling partner was in fact, still there, before striding over to one of the more intact-seeming canvas tents. She ran a hand down its rough exterior before pulling it open and poking her head inside. Just as one might have expected, it was completely empty, not just of people but of any items at all. Strange that someone would have packed up all their stuff and left the tent, but then again, it was even more strange that someone would have just picked up a bunch of kids and dropped them into some sort of twisted murder competition.
In any case, it would work perfectly well as a shelter from the increasingly strong rain that had been pattering down on them for who knows how long since they left the cave. She didn't really know why this kid wanted to leave that shelter in the first place... maybe he was just scared of the dark or something. Not that she cared that much or anything, but still... it was a little weird to have been traveling in silence for so long. Hopefully the comfort of finally having some decent shelter for once would help him to open up. After a few moments, she pulled her head back out of the tent and gave a wave to Alexander (that was his name, right?) before turning back to head inside.

He and his companion had wandered through the twisting passages of the cave system before finding themselves on the other side of the island. He had first judged that the presence of tents meant that they had arrived at a suitable location for their sanctuary - the derelict campsite. His ally searched for a shelter to find solace from the rain. He had instead wandered a short while away, towards a pitch of damaged and stripped tents.
He felt the cold rain pour down on him and wash the salt and sand from him. He scratched lightly at his scalp and ran his fingers through his hair. He shivered slightly in the frigid night air. His eyes fixed on a point just below him, his torch aimed at a motionless figure clad in green canvas. He tapped it with his foot and shuddered. He recognised at once that what stood before him was another corpse, like the one on the shore.
He saw, out of the corner of his retinae, his companion. He took a short glance away from the deceased shape and stared vaguely in the direction of the girl, though he did not meet her gaze. He watched her walk away and then turned his head back. He turned his face back to the remains on the cold, wet ground.
He knew that thirty people had watched the briefing alongside him and that three of them were now dead. He would never be able to excise them from his mind. He knew that twenty-six more would have to die for him to live. He wondered how many more of them would burn into his memory. He hoped that, in the future, he would be able to forget his experience here. He didn't want to remember the time he had awoken on this microcosm of hell, but he believed it would never leave his mind. He stared again at the corpse at his feet.
He heard the ruffle of canvas and tilted his head in the other direction. He saw the other girl step out from a tent, wave to him, and then return to the inside. He took another glance at the body, turned, and then walked towards the tent. He turned the torch off with a click of the button, slipped it into his right pocket, and gripped the left strap of the canvas knapsack with his left hand.
He followed her inside and swept the canvas out of his path with his right arm. He slung the rucksack off of his shoulder, tossed it haphazardly onto the floor, and then sat down in the corner of the tent. He looked at her and opened his mouth as if to speak, but no words left his mouth. He turned away from her, then stared at the canvas of the tent as if he could see through it. He wore an expression of desolation on his face, and his eyes appeared vacant.

Just like that, the rapidly darkening sky brought the lighting inside the tent from "kinda dim" to "damn, it sure is dark in here". The fact that they had a light was a little bit of a comfort, but not much. Clara had never been afraid of the dark, at least not since she was a little kid, but the fact that she was trapped in an unknown location with armed people potentially trying to kill her served as an ever-present cloud of unease, making its presence known in every setting that she found herself in.
She pursed her lips nervously for a moment before slowly taking a seat opposite of her companion, setting the bag she had found next to her. They hadn't had much of an opportunity to go through it, and in this darkness there really wasn't a point to doing it. Not much point of doing anything here, really. All she could do was sit there, wasting time while she waited for the rain to stop, and maybe get a bit of rest.
Speaking of rest, what time was it, anyway? The heavy storm clouds made it impossible to tell if the sun was still out or not, and it had been ages since she had seen any sort of clock lying around. Her hand instinctively reached for her pocket before she remembered that there was no cell phone there anymore. Who would have thought that everyone forgoing wristwatches in favour of what were effectively electronic pocket watches would have had adverse consequences?

O28: ZANDER LIN – CONTINUED FROM GET ME OUT OF HERE!
Zander stumbled around in the dark. He was in a rainforest, or at least he had been the last time he had been able to see more than a few feet in front of his face and since he could still feel leaves and shit under his feet he assumed that was still the case. Aside from the occasional glimpse of moonlight filtering through the canopy above there was precious little light to go by; a flashlight, like the one he had seen in his bag earlier that day, would have been of huge help right about now, but unfortunately for him some cunt had stolen his all of his belongings while he was unconscious. So instead of being able to see where he was fucking going he was forced to stagger from tree to tree with outstretched hands like an idiot, stepping carefully so that he didn’t fall over again so he could get out of this damn forest that he’d only thought to go through because he didn’t have a fucking map anymore.
Someone was going to pay dearly for this.
The option to just sit down and wait for morning and the light of day was there, but he chose to keep pushing on in the hopes of finding a way out, then finding shelter and then finding something to eat. Food; that was the biggest concern right now. His stomach clenched around nothing just thinking about it. He hadn’t eaten for hours and he had no food because that was also in his fucking bag.
The further he walked the lighter it seemed to get. Not sunrise, the colour wasn’t right for that; a glance up told him the trees were getting thinner in this direction. He chose to take that as a good sign. Eventually he could see something beyond the endless rows of trees, a clearing with something in it; not a building, not even a shack, but something.
“Fucking finally.”
As he left the rainforest and walked out into the clearing he kicked a can, something old and rusted and ancient looking; it was the first sign of civilisation, something man-made, he’d seen in hours. It flew forward, bounced off the trunk of a tree and rolled along the ground until it came to a stop at the base of some tent that looked half rotten and falling to pieces. It was a camp of some sort, or at least what was left of one; the whole thing looked decades old at best. The odds of him finding anything edible, or even useful in a place like this was low.
“Fuck! Give me a fucking break!”

He turned his head towards the girl and frowned discretely. He didn't want to answer her question, but he knew an outright refusal would draw ire and suspicion. He readied himself to deliver a statement that would achieve the bare minimum - the least possible amount of information he was inclined to reveal. He thought through his words for a moment.
He opened his mouth to speak, but he was interrupted by a volley of oaths - which seemingly originated from outside the tent. He recognized the voice immediately - the boy from the harbour, evidently furious. He recoiled slightly in surprise, then turned to his companion and spoke - his words were quiet and curt.
"He's a possible threat - bloody violent, but he doesn't have nowt anymore. He attacked the Irish girl earlier today and lost his bag for it. Your call as to what we do."
He was relatively confident that they had the other boy outgunned - the other girl had a weapon of her own that she could use to deter the boy, though he still did not know what it was.

Clara's head shot up, grateful to have been liberated from what was certain to have been an extremely awkward conversation. The fact that Lex had barely said anything on the way over here was already an indication that he wasn't exactly a fan of talking, but what else were they supposed to do? Just sit there in boring silence waiting for the sun to come up?
Anyway, no point complaining about that now that something interesting was actually happening. Clara's hand lightly brushed against gun tucked into her waistband, confirming that it was indeed still in the same place that it had been several minutes ago. He nodded as the girl spoke, but his face twisted into an unmistakable frown. He had no interest or desire to talk with the other boy - he suspected that nothing good would come of it. He gripped the strap of the bag tightly - his stolen belongings weighed heavier on his shoulder. He muttered under his breath in response to the boy's pointless squall.
"Serves you right, cunt."
He moved his right hand down to his right pocket, from which he drew the torch. He raised it, pressed the button with his thumb, and then scanned around the area in a sweeping motion from right to left. He saw a silhouette, which he identified as the rage-filled competitor.
"Stop scrikin' and tell us, have you seen anyone?"
"Serves you right, cunt."
He moved his right hand down to his right pocket, from which he drew the torch. He raised it, pressed the button with his thumb, and then scanned around the area in a sweeping motion from right to left. He saw a silhouette, which he identified as the rage-filled competitor.
"Stop scrikin' and tell us, have you seen anyone?"
Clara stepped out of the way of the torch's light, her grin hidden by the darkness. At least now she had some proof that this guy wasn't completely made of stone. She made a mental note to ask him what 'scriking' was after they had finished dealing with the inordinately angry guy who had just barged into the campsite.
To be perfectly honest, this was already seeming like a bit of a waste - even if this prick did know anything about the pair they were tracking, he didn't seem like the kind of person who would just hand over the information voluntarily. After all, he had already attacked someone, though apparently so incompetently that she was just able to grab his bag and run off with it. Based on that information, plus the size of his silhouette left no doubt in her mind that she could easily kick his ass.
Still, despite everything, it would be idiotic to completely write him off at a potential threat. Clara had had her own bag stolen, yet still kept her weapon - what's to say that this guy hadn't done the same? Her hand quickly moved to her side as she stared off at the intruding figure, ready to react if he made any sudden moves. Her heartbeat quickened as the thought of combat brought to mind the shootouts from those old cowboy movies. She knew that there was no way something like that could end well... but damn if it wasn't at least a little exciting...

A light swept across the campsite from the entrance of a tent across the way, giving him his first glimpse of where this mystery voice was coming from, right up until they spotted him and began shining the light directly in his fucking eyes.
It wasn’t bright, but compared to the dark he was just in it might as well have been blinding. Zander raised a hand to shield against it while clenching the other into a fist at his side; fucking assholes had him under a spotlight and he couldn’t see a damn thing about them. He watched as the other boy raised a hand in front of his vision. He lowered the torch by the most minute amount, enough to reveal a clenched fist, then returned his aim to the boy's face. He turned his face to his companion, then spoke quietly, a smirk on his face.
"Give me a second. I've got an idea."
He swapped the flashlight into his left hand, backed up a few steps, and lowered himself onto his right knee. He felt around for a moment, gripped a metal stake from the soil, and then smiled weakly. He racked it back and forth until it became loose, then drew it from the earth. He pushed himself back upward, stepped forward again, then pointed both the stake and the torch back at the other boy and raised his voice.
"The thing is, right, you don't have any food or any water, and if I had to guess, you don't have a weapon either. We've got all three. I'd recommend talking."

Lex had an idea, did he? Clara glanced over at the item her partner had picked up, her own hand still hovering just over her own weapon, ready to draw it at any moment, just in case whatever he had thought of wasn't nearly as smart as it initially seemed in his head. It wasn't like there'd be much harm in letting him try, if this Jerkface McMeaniepants really did have nothing on him.
Then again, wouldn't this have been the most perfectly ironic moment for things to go downhill? Like, if this were a movie or something, as soon as they let their guards down he'd pull out a hidden gun from his boot and smoke both of them before they had time to let out any of the seven words you weren't allowed to say on American television. Or was it 11? It was hard to remember, not least because she was beginning to have the sneaking suspicion that such a rule didn't even exist, and it was actually from some youtube video she had watched years ago.

No. Hell no, this is what they wanted him to do. They were trying to goad him into a fight they thought he wouldn’t win so they could kill him; stab him in the dark with a hidden weapon. Well too bad, asshole, Zander was smarter than that; these guys wanted information or a corpse out of him and he wasn’t going to give them either.
“I recommend you suck my dick. I’m not telling you shit.”
Zander turned around, putting his back to the pair, and began to walk away.
Fuck it, he’d find food somewhere else.

His hand gripped the weapon tightly as the other boy stepped towards them. He gritted his teeth as his body tensed up at the prospect of a fight. He had expected the other boy to give up when faced with insurmountable force. He hadn't anticipated the vain courage that the boy showed, the conceited violation of common sense.
His hand loosened again as the other boy seemed to contract, head turned to the weapon in his hand. He received nothing more than a curse - a far cry from the violence characteristic of the other boy's actions. He watched as the boy turned himself away and began to storm off into the torrential rain. He had no intention to stop the boy and turned his view to his comrade, though his eyes never matched her own. He forced himself to speak as a sullen tone appeared in his voice.
"I don't think he's going to give us anything. I say..."
He paused as the words caught in his throat.
"...we let him starve. It'd be one less threat to worry about."
His eyes drifted uncomfortably to the ground.
"Let's head back inside. I'll take watch if that's sound to you, in case he tries to come back."

Clara sighed quietly as she stared off into the distance, her eyes wandering away from the figure receding back into the darkness. This new guy clearly didn't have anything of value to tell them, and as much as she would have liked taking him down a peg, the whole interaction was just getting tiresome at this point. For all they knew, their targets were getting further and further away with every passing minute, and they had just wasted their time arguing with this petulant little shit instead of getting enough rest to continue their pursuit.
She turned to her partner, staring at him for a moment before nodding slowly. It was a little harsh of him to put it at this way, but to be perfectly honest, she didn't really give a damn about that guy anyway. As far as she was concerned, anything that happened to him from now on was his own fault. Being that much of an asshole wasn't going to get him any help from anyone, and with how carelessly he was walking away into the dark... A brief sense of schadenfreude flashed its way through Clara's mind as she pictured him tripping and falling off a cliff, the corner of her mouth curling up into a slight smile before she was able to compose herself and give a reply to the person standing next to her.
"Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Let me know when you want to switch places."
And with that, she headed back into the tent, her body heavy with exhaustion. If this interaction with Zander had wasted enough time to allow their targets to get away, the next time she saw him she'd make sure that starving to death would be the least of his worries.
