It's Just A Day

The gardens run from the leadership houses to the entrance of the manor house and formerly featured many winding paths, freshly cut grass, and an array of exotic plants from around the world. In the time since the community left the island, however, these features have all fallen into disuse. The grass is long and unkempt, and if one was to walk the paths they would have to step over many overgrown plants and debris that litter them or block the way. The other highly noticeable thing is that the gardens themselves have become overrun by devil's ivy which was introduced to the island by the leadership, who did not realize it was an invasive species.

Justin looked up from his scope to try and see where the hell everybody was running. The boy had jumped out of the spotlight and finding him again appeared to be a ceaseless struggle without doing some spotting. Instead of spotting Matt like he'd hoped, what he had instead spotted was something headed in his general direction with a trail of smoke following it.

Instinct before reason, Justin leaped to his feet. A grenade... somebody had thrown a grenade at him! His gut screamed at him to move as if he'd been laying down on a red hot nail penetrating his stomach and searing his insides and before he could assure himself that it was probably just a smoke grenade (if the trail was any indication), he'd already run a few steps.

Right, as it just so happened, into somebody else screaming toward his position. That somebody tore at him, demanding to leave them alone (a reasonable request, admittedly). Justin panic-fired a shot into the ground before his feet, pedaling back. No, no, fuck! They were already this close to him before he had any time to prepare!

Perpetually falling backward and keeping his feet somewhere beneath him in the nick of time with each step, the would-be sniper pointed the gun in Shauna's general direction. Something was wrong with the gun, but at this distance, he prayed it wouldn't matter, because if he missed, he was about to be dead meat.

He twisted her way. Maybe yelling was a bad idea.

Shauna inhaled, maybe to yell something, maybe to scream, but the rifle blast deafened her to what even came from her own mouth.

The bullet smashed through her hip in an explosion of blinding pain. She half turned en route to smashing into the ground.

She gasped. She gasped again. She couldn't feel anything below her waist. She didn't want to.

Hot tears were already streaking down her face, but she gritted her teeth. She forced a howl, a yell, she got one foot underneath her, levering her body partway upright.

Shauna levelled the shotgun and pulled the trigger.

There new gunshots, and it had happened in front of her. Shauna had been shot in the hip. Angie shrieked, seeing a piece of bone protruding out of her friend. The blood spattered around, specking the garden’s rocks with a new layer of paint.

Shauna fired back with her gun, blasting the unseen enemy. Not caring for safety, Angie lunged forward, putting her body between Shauna and the shooter. Her hands trailed to her friend’s body. She was bleeding a lot, Angie’s hands were already drenched in the hot liquid.

“Shauna, are you okay?”

Clearly, she wasn’t. Her body had a new wound to sport. It was another trophy earned on this trip, something else to show to the world. Angie’s hands found the injuries and she covered it with her hands.

“Please don’t do that again,” she threw her head backward, looking at the forest, “Shauna, please.”

More gunshots. A roar from Shauna and then another shot. A shotgun. No response from either of the girls.

"Hello?!" Matthew shouted, "Say something!"

Nothing. They were separated. Waiting it out is not an option. He had to do something!

Taking a deep breath, he decided to risk it and poked his head out to check to see where they were. He saw smoke in one spot and two figures in another. Wait, did they get the fucker? Since they're standing still out there, at least from what he can see, they probably did.

He counted in his head.

One...

..two...

...three...

...four...

...five!

Standing up, he ran out of the manor towards the figures. As he got closer, Shauna and Angie became recognizable.

"There you are! Are yo-" He trailed off when he spotted the blood trailing down Shauna's body. That son of a bitch got her. Taking a look to the side, he saw that the bastard wasn't moving.

With the kill confirmed, Matthew moved to put Shauna's arm over his shoulder.

"I have the first-aid kit in my bag! Hurry!"

She's going to shoot me. She's going to shoot me. She's going to SHOOT ME!

Thinking it to warn himself Did nothing to get himself out of the way of danger. He couldn't will the gun to not shoot, or the shot to miss. Justin could raise the rifle again, level it at Shauna for another shot where the first rang true.

Wishes and willpower, it so turned out, couldn't adequately serve as ammunition in a gun that was out of it. He pulled the trigger impotently. Shauna didn't, and Justin jerked his body away for the sheer reflex of it if nothing else. It felt like the biggest and baddest kid in George Hunter socked him in the elbow, and Justin collapsed to the ground. The rifle fell out of his hand and his hips bent upward from landing on something hard. He jerked and twitched, trying to catch his breath. It wasn't coming, only pain shooing up his arm.

He was too afraid to look, to see what was there and what wasn't. Shauna, bloodied and broken just like him, still stumbled to carry forward momentum and was practically over him. Other voices droned through the ringing in his ear, sounded like they were getting closer.

Surrounded... critically wounded, out of ammo. So this was how he died.

He went down in a puff of red.

Was... was that it? Had she done it?

She'd killed—

She's saved—

He...

Shauna tried to rise and her leg, her shredded hip, her whole being screamed at her. She cried out, catching herself by pure luck on her own gun.

Angie ran to her. Matthew ran to her. Was this—was this going to be okay?

Something ground as she attempted to take a step, she almost fell again. They both kept her upright.

Gotta make sure. Gotta make sure. Couldn't just—had to make sure that she was going all the way, if she was doing this.

She staggered free in a sudden burst of motion, teetered and tottered, and, covering that last bit of ground over to the shooter, plunged on top of him, bringing the butt of the shotgun down into his face.

“Shauna!”

Angie screamed, reaching out for her as she scrambled her broken body toward the shooter. Her fingers tried to grasp her but it was too late. She was out of reach, she was moving quite fast for someone with a grave injury like this.

Angie assumed it had to do with the adrenaline. The body moved even if the mind didn’t want to or, rather, shouldn’t to. Shauna shouldn’t be moving, she was injured and yet she ran up to the shooter with her weapon at the ready. As she brought it down unto the attacker’s face, Angie reached her friend.

It was a boy. Angie didn’t recognize him. She wasn’t sure if it was because of the island or if it was because of everything that had happened, but Angie couldn’t place him. Her mind jumped around from right to left without any rhyme or reason.

Angie wanted to stop Shauna from hurting him. More accurately, she wanted to feel that. But instead, she was filled with spite and anger and hatred. There wasn’t place for forgiveness in her heart.

“Shauna,” she said, the name lingering at the edge of her mouth, “do it.”

She wanted him gone.

"What are you doing?!" Matthew yelled when Shauna managed to pull away from him, running towards the sniper.

How she was able to run that fast with that bad of an injury was a question that barely entered his mind as he quickly pursued her, reaching her along with Angie just when she hit the psychopath with the end of the shotgun.

Looking at the sniper's face, he recognized it as Justin Greene, someone that he mostly sees only in gym class. The motherfucker that killed Sean and intended to add Matthew to his body count.

Matthew's lips narrowed, clenching his jaw, and his hands formed tight fists. Why?! What the fuck for?! He didn't do anything to anybody!

His mind raced with questions that had one simple answer: he was an easy target. Someone that could potentially become a threat later on. Too bad it backfired.

Matthew decided to stand back and let Shauna beat Justin's corpse for a bit longer, although he was ready to pull her away if he had to. Her hip needs to be treated before it got infected.

Justin saw Shauna's approach through eyes squinted shut in pain and blurred by steadily approaching tears. He asked both hands to raise when she descended upon him, and only one answered. It wasn't enough. Two probably wouldn't have been enough either, not that he had much time to lament before the wooden stock cracked into his skull and things went dark for a moment.

'Do it', somebody said.

Justin opened an eye, barely; the swelling was immediately apparent and he couldn't see much, but he saw enough. He let his eye relax, unable to exert much effort. His eye hurt, his nose... his mouth, he tasted blood and thought he could feel a tooth where it shouldn't have been when wiggling the tip of his tongue. Fear and pain held him still like a rabbit trying to wait out a hawk.

His right hand tingled and he silently commanded it to hold still.

There might be a chance to get out of this, but only one.

Whack.

Whack.

Whack.

After the first hit, the strength dwindled out of the strikes, each impact less than the one before until even the effort of raising the gun again became too much and she was just aimlessly slinging a fist at his face, bloodied and battered. Shauna cocked back her hand and someone else's touched her. She jolted, and it was like a cold dousing of ice water.

The pain hit. The relief hit. The raw, urgent hurt hit, in every possible way. She'd been shot. She could feel things grinding, she wasn't sure what was holding together, parts of her hip and pelvis moving that shouldn't be.

But beyond that she'd just killed him. She was shot, but he was dead. Look at his face. Look at the ragged and bleeding tear in his shoulder, his chest.

God. God. She'd done that.

Shauna turned into Angie's arms and the tears came in a choking flood as she stumbled against her, half limping, half hopping away, gun sliding from her hand a few paces clear.

"S'gonna, we're gonna be okay."

"It's okay, it's okay."

She clung to Shauna as if she were clinging to a lifebuoy. Angie put her hand back on Shauna's hips and the other on her shoulder. She held the pieces of Shauna together, murmuring to herself a mantra she didn't believe in it.

Angie's smile was crooked, broken. A bit lopsided. She wasn't sure how she looked but she knew it was bad.

"It's okay, Shauna, it's okay." She repeated, again and again. "Let's go, okay?"

She was shaking. Her mind wasn't on anything but Shauna.

"Let's go okay? Let's go."

Angie stopped Shauna and just like that, it was over.

Matthew couldn't help but stare at Justin. The announcements mentioned how Sean was beaten to death by him. Justin's bloodied face probably looks similar to his once he was done with him.

An eye for an eye.

"Rot in hell, you bastard."

He turned around to help move Shauna, but he stopped when he noticed a gun near the body. The same one that nearly got them killed.

Better not leave that lying around...

Taking a few steps towards it, he slung the rifle over his back before running over to catch up with the girls. As he did so, Shauna's shotgun hit the ground in front of him.

Shit. She needs help now or she's done for! Pausing only for a moment to pick up the shotgun with one hand, he put her arm over his shoulder again with his other hand, taking some of the weight off of Angie.

"You're going to be alright! Hang in there!"

They were turning away from him and leaving him. Leaving him for dead. Everyone thinking you're dead had some advantages. Justin felt doubt infecting his mind. He could stop now, continue to play dead as the broken and despised mess, and fool everybody until the next announcements. That could buy him some time to recuperate. He was afraid, afraid enough to want to tremble and yet too much to do so for the slightest movement might have earned him another gunshot to the head.

He could have been passive and lived, at least for the remainder of yet another day until the next encounter went tits up just like this one... just like every one. Justin fought the urge to gasp for air as the shock from injury was wearing off. His arm hurt, his ass still hurt from where Ace had shot him. His face was sore and felt broken in a few places. Justin wouldn't keep surviving fuckups or the consequences of playing passive without removing threats. Letting any of them live was counterproductive to winning.

Winning was living. Once again, he repeated to himself in his mind the mantra that had gotten him this far: If he wanted to live, they had to die. Fuck what they thought. He didn't blame them for fighting back... but he hated them for how much he hurt.

He heard Matt take the gun next to him and do who knew what with it, but that was fine. Justin was about to get it back.

His right hand crept closer to his hip, trying not to make any noise sweeping his fingers over the blades of grass before they reached his side. His fingers could get under the small of his back; his arm paused in its efforts as he opened his good eye to look at the three. Angie and Matt were focused on a badly wounded Shauna... and so they weren't looking at him. He could feel the grip of the gun but could not pull it out from the waistband without moving his hips. Slowly, Justin filled his lungs with a deep breath and prepared to make his move. He rolled to the left and put pressure on his ruined arm in the process, causing him to whine. It would draw attention to him, surely, but it was too late. He'd make sure it would be too late.

Justin pulled the handgun from his waistband and brought it around, nearly fumbling when he stretched his thumb to the safety to click it off. He pointed it at Angie's center and pulled the trigger, numbed to the little explosion by now. He carried the same expression when he swept the gun over to Shana and pulled the trigger again. Then to Matt. Again.

Again.

Destroy. Them. All.
