My Lucifer Is Lonely

Day 3, open

Unlike the east side of the village, the west side of the housing has remained in much the same condition it was left in. The houses here are all in the same state as they were when they were first built, the identical houses all sitting in identical rows with the only difference being their color. The interior of the houses all share the same layout, with a shared living area/kitchen and a separate bedroom. The state of these rooms is surprisingly clean and consistent throughout the western side of the village as well, with all the beds appearing to have been made and the houses tidied, with chairs tucked into the kitchen table before the residents departed.

((Aditi Sharma continued from Antisocial Darwinism))

Aditi's cardigan was gone now, because it was far too hot for it.

If this had been ten years ago then that might have been enough to save them all. The island was hot, tropical, and significantly not in the Southern Hemisphere, so that narrowed the entire island possibility list down to just a few oceans and half-oceans, but unfortunately the news of Aditi's grisly demise would not be televised until a few weeks, possibly months, later, so outside help wasn't possible from that juncture. Either way, news like that could have been celebrated at a different time, during a different terror attack on young children, but for now all it meant for Aditi was that her arms had been sweating like crazy ever since the sun came up so now she had to get rid of more of her clothing.

The house they'd chosen to stay in for the night and most of the coming day wasn't anything special - in fact, none of the houses in this area of the island were anything special. Were second floors a luxury reserved for the upper-class? Maybe. Aditi had never bothered to ask her less fortunate friends about that aspect of housing, and even if she had she would not remember the answer because she did not care outside of idle musing. Either way, the house itself was some sort of faded red-violet colour, significantly garish enough to remember amongst the pillboxes, so when Sakurako and Adele came back they could discuss Aditi's plan.

Aditi had gone along with these people with the intention of leading them into her plan, but her main problem stemmed from her own experiences. Namely, she knew what she needed to convince them she was right, but she didn't have it. She could scream into the void about her correctness all she wanted, but if she didn't have any evidence to back up the screams, that's all they were. So while Sakurako and Adele and Blake and Cheridene spent their time discussing trivilialities, Aditi was deep in thought, nodding whenever her name was mentioned, doing things that needed doing, and trying to think of what could make it all better for her when she explained it all.

Luckily, they all survived the night, and the announcements came and went. They weren't particularly good news, and Aditi was particularly shocked at the news that Yuko was gone. They had been on the softball team together, so even though Aditi was far more popular and important than her around school, she always had time to speak and be merry with Yuko Hayashibara. But not anymore, because Yuko wasn't Yuko anymore, in fact Yuko wasn't anything anymore. The thought left Aditi with a hole in her stomach, a hole that could be patched up once they'd left the island, but not now, there wasn't time.

Adele and Sakurako were out scavenging for supplies, against Aditi's wishes. She was the only one with a weapon, a weapon they were all significantly aware of, so she volunteered, but they insisted on being alone, which flared a few resentments from within. This wasn't a Sunday Social, this was a death game. If they wanted to be side-characters in some young adult adventure book, off having their token character development, they could do it with the group, but Aditi didn't have the power she craved yet so there wasn't anything she could do as suddenly she was behind with Cheridene and Blake and they were off looking for...anything, really.

More relevant to her own plans, Aditi stood at the bench in the kitchen, idly standing alone trying to remember everything she could remember reading or watching about these past "versions". There had to be something, anything she could use to make her point, to strengthen her thesis, and make sure they understood that her way was the only way forward for everyone, not just the five of them. The cart was in one of the other rooms, with everything but her gun inside it, and she didn't know what Blake and Cheridene were doing with themselves. It couldn't have been that important, unless they'd stumbled across an underground bunker with collar-destruction devices and grenade launchers ready to light the sky on fire.

As Aditi stood there, hands planted on the bench surface, she noticed the camera in the corner moving slightly, as though ashamed of watching her. A twinge of resentment popped up within Aditi, wishing she could just rip it out of the wall and take a self-depricating selfie with it, but unfortunately those were two things that were impossible because-

((Blake Davis continued from Antisocial Darwinism))

It was difficult trying to get to sleep last night.

Blake didn't know if it was the idea of someone finding them while they were all asleep or if it was the location of where they decided to stop, but he was feeling more paranoid than before. The fact that nobody was in the mood to keep watch for at least an hour or two didn't exactly help. It felt like hours had passed while he was trying to find the right position.

Regardless, sleep eventually managed to take hold of him. Everybody else was up by the time the announcements came. Abel's name hit him like a truck, and it sounded like he was the first to die given that the voice said that most of them were still asleep at the time. He was a pretty damn good catcher and a good friend too, so Blake couldn't think of any good reason as to why Paloma killed him.

She had to have murdered him while he was sleeping. She had to. Abel could've beat the shit out of her had he been awake.

He filed Paloma away in his mind for later when he finds her. He couldn't afford to lash out towards the others. It wasn't their fault that he was angry, after all. It was difficult to get Abel out of his mind for the first couple of hours, but he did eventually manage to shift his focus completely on planning out what he was going to do for the day.

And he was still trying to figure out what to do even now as he mindlessly walked next to one of the houses.

Scavenging was already taken by two of the girls and Aditi and Cheri were off doing...who knows what? Honestly, what can they do while they wait? Guard duty, even though they don't have any weapons? Talk some more?

As Blake cycled through more ideas, his eye caught something and he stopped next to the window. When he squinted his eyes, he saw the shopping cart containing the duffel bags inside of the bedroom. Sakurako and Adele took their bags, so that only left his, Aditi, and Cheri's bags in there. This was one of the few times where the convenience of having only one person be responsible for transporting the bags isn't really worth it. It was still a stupid idea, just leaving their bags like that. In fact, it was even more stupid considering how under-armed they were for any threats. No, it was clear that nobody thought of the consequences of it. As far as his knowledge goes, nobody was even checking on it.

...Wait, nobody's checking on it...which means...

He looked around him to make sure nobody was looking before checking to see if the window was unlocked. It was, thankfully, and he pulled it open. Making sure to make as little noise as possible, he proceeded to climb through it and got to the point where he was sitting on the ledge. Placing both of his hands on it and pushing off, he landed on his feet.

Turning around, he faced the window and closed it. An open window can draw attention, after all.

Blake stood there for a minute as he listened closely for any sounds, anything that might indicate that Aditi or Cheri were inside. When nothing came to his ears, he let out a silent sigh of relief as he walked over to the cart. Feeling confident that nobody was going to notice him, he found his bag with his number and unzipped it before he pushed it out of the way. He decided to start slow and unzipped one of the bags at random.

The one he picked had G075 on the side.

Soon, he got to work on pulling out the energy bars and transfering it over to his bag...

((Cheridene Williams, continued from Antisocial Darwinism same as everybody else))

Well, shit, this was much nicer than the other section of housing she'd stumbled across when she woke up.

'It seemed unfair', Cheridene thought, but she dared not vocalize it because almost immediately she was able to pick out just how stupid a thought it was. How was any of this situation supposed to be 'fair' to anybody? The weapons were randomly assigned so while she had a pen, she had an apple, put them together she's got a fucking pineapple vape pen, there were probably kids out there with sawn-off shotguns and missile launchers and chainsaws, all sorts of horrifying things that could maim somebody and kill in seconds. That they were being forced to play 'hide the knife in the torso' with each other, that was unfair. Deciding who got to wake up where when they were all dropped into the middle of actual nowhere was a trivial, pointless complaint.

But okay, still consider, what about two people who wake up but in different parts of this abandoned town? You've got one person who lives in a relatively nice hut - nothing fancy, but definitely livable, complete with intact roofs and windows, and then the other person is living in a generously arranged lumber or scrapyard.

"You're bored, girl," Cheridene sighed. But she'd needed something to think about or talk about while inspecting the houses closest to their own. She had no weapon on her person and that caused an uncomfortable disquiet about the area as imagined threats lurked around every corner. She'd only run into a few people before her current group: Catherine, Garren, Lucas B. All alive, none of them killers. Cheri breathed in a deep breath through her nose and exhaled. It sounded stupid but... without having actually seen the threats, it seemed a world away from her. Maybe that's why being without a weapon was only uncomfortable and not terrifying. She didn't need the others knowing how vulnerable she felt, either. Any questions as to her weapon or if she had one were deflected or outright ignored. For all they knew, maybe she'd already slipped it out, a pen knife or a pocket pistol, and had been keeping it on her person the whole time. Nobody needed to know she was totally unarmed, nobody needed to have that hand tipped.

Because if she lost that uncertainty, what Cheri could be certain of was that her chances of dying went way up.

So she searched a third house, only to find that it was, yet again, pretty much the same, boring, empty deal as the other two she'd checked and as the house they'd decided to camp out in. The others had gone further, elsewhere in town.

Cheri was expecting to shit herself when she caught glimpse of one of them, mistaking them for a boogeyman or something.

This was perfect. This was absolutely perfect. She knew what she needed to say to convince them now, to convince all four of them on the right plan. No more wandering arond looking for pointless things, no more talks of boats, no more directionless drivel while people died around them. She needed to get all five of them together and let them know what they would be doing for the rest of their time here.

There was a chance this wouldn't lead to an escape. But it had to lead to something.

Aditi uprooted her hands from the kitchen counter and began striding through the house, looking for her companions. It was a tiny house, so they couldn't have been too far. At most they weren't supposed to go further than a few houses away, shouting distance at most. She could walk outside and shout for them, but that was a risk not worth taking, especially considering who could be lurking. Instead, Aditi walked down the hallway and opened the door to the bedroom - there was always a chance one of them was having an early lunch.

Lo and behold, Blake was actually there, going through-

...

...

...going through Aditi's bag.

She looked down at his hands, holding several of the scarce energy bars she owned that were now making their way into Blake's own bag. She looked back up at Blake himself, her expression as unreadable as the morning humid.

"...are you alright there?"

There was something brewing in the state of Aditi, but for now-

"Anyways, put those back, and help me find Cheridene. I've got something important."

She was going to put a pin in that, at least until they found their fifth traveling companion.

Alright, this was going well so far. Two energy bars in Blake's bag so far, and only a couple more to go before moving on...

Quietly, now...

A bit faster, now...

As he put the third bar into his bag, the unmistakable sound of the door near him opening stopped him in his tracks. Blake turned his head to confirm if the last thing he wanted to happen did indeed happen. Sure enough, it was Aditi catching him in the act. His eyes immediately widened and he took a quiet, but still audible intake of air.

Shit! Why the fuck didn't I check the entire house?!

She caught him. There's no denying it. She saw him holding the bars in his one hand and putting them in his bag with the other. He didn't address Aditi's question as he tried to think of a way out. The window behind him was an option if just taking the bags and running was a good idea. Which it wasn't. Knocking her out wasn't good either for obvious reasons. His mind cycled through more ideas as he just stood there staring at her, not daring to move an inch.

Nice going, dumbass.

It didn't seem like he didn't need to do anything drastic though as Aditi, for whatever reason, just politely asked him to put the bars back and help her find Cheri. With all things considered, that was actually the best option for him. He couldn't just silently do what she said and look like he had his tail between his legs, though. He had to try to convince her that it wasn't what it looked like, and hope she doesn't question him on how many of her bars he has in his own bag. What the hell would he even say?! That he was just hungry?!

Regardless, he had to try to come up with something. Anything. As Blake left his bag alone and moved to put the remaining bars in his one hand back into the G075 bag, he mustered up the best poker face he could manage and spoke.

"These bars were all over the floor. I'm trying to figure out which goes where."

Well, she tried. Gave it the old... the old college try, scouting the immediate area. The search turned up nothing fruitful: no food, no weapons, no miscellaneous supplies. Cheridene attempted to reason with herself that she had accomplished something, that she'd 'secured the area' and determined that the other houses aren't full of baddies armed to the teeth. The logic should have held up. Why, then, did she feel so useless and extraneous? What was she doing? What was the strategy, here? She had to be contributing in some way toward an end goal and no matter how much she told herself she was in fact doing that, she wound up feeling useless.

This was still the frame of mind she found herself in, peeking around corners as she came back to home base. She heard talking - Aditi's voice, mostly. She sounded a little... not mad, but like, kinda miffed about something, unhappy and unsettled in general. That wasn't good, Cheri decided, immediately dreaming up the worst possible scenarios for what she was coming back to. Honestly, if their group was already getting torn apart by one of those early starters that was killing like it was Friday the 13th or some shit, risk-reward said she was just going to book it. She didn't have no weapon in that house; a little bit of food and water wasn't worth getting her head cut off over.

It came as some relief that there was no dangerous intruder, only Aditi and Blake. Not... not sure what Blake was doing, though. She caught her own name.

"Yeah, I'm here," Cheri called. "Sorry I walked off a bit, I was just checking the other houses around here. ... Didn't find nothin', though."

They didn't have to search long, because Cheridene poked her head around the corner and was suddenly sharing the room with them. Blake tried muttering something about the bars being all over the floor, which was the kind of thing you said when you were lying after being caught going through bags, but the pin was in that.

Aditi turned around to their travelling companion and nodded.

"Good, I was looking for you. And Blake, but I found him. I just thought it would be good to know I've finally come up with that plan I was talking about, but I'm going to wait until Sakurako and Adele are back before I go into it, because I can't exactly explain it twice."

She began to turn back around on her heels.

"Before that, though-"

The pin fell out. Aditi's hands gripped the cart and threw it on its wheels, sending it rolling roughly across the wooden bedroom floor, away from between her and Blake and loudly into the wall.

"I'd like to know why Blake was going through our belongings."

Aditi did not wait until the crash before filling the gap between them until she was fitting right into Blake's own space, her eyes into his.

It was painfully obvious that Aditi didn't believe him in the slightest. Really, who would? Anybody could see through it plain as day unless they were living under a rock. If he made one of his lies that obvious back home...

Well, what now? Should he try to spin it as a mistake? No, because then she's going to ask why he didn't just say that first. Just admit to it? Hell no.

Even if he wanted to just tell her, that isn't going to happen due to Cheri walking in. It's bad enough that Aditi caught him with his pants down, he doesn't need to be known to everybody else as the guy with sticky fingers! Cheri mentioned something about not finding anything in the other houses, so he can put up a reasonable defense if she brought up what he was doing with their stuff.

Aditi mentioned that she's going to wait until Sakurako and Adele come back to explain her plan and, in one swift motion, sent the cart flying towards the wall. Just before he can ask just what the hell she was doing, she invaded his personal space and demanded an explanation.

Guess they're doing this now, then. It was clear what her goal was: try to get a confession out of him. It's not the first time somebody tried that on him.

And that's not going to happen.

He stood his ground and looked right back into Aditi's eyes as he spoke firmly.

"What are you talking about? I was never going through anybody's stuff other than my own. I want you to step back, please. You're in my personal space."

Cheridene took a half-step back to create space and held up her hands.

"A'ight now hold on, let's be cool," she muttered, but she understood Aditi's reaction. In a one-on-one situation with herself and Blake, she'd chance getting testy at him going through her things... with anybody going through her things, really. In the company of more than one other person, survival instincts pushed Cheridene to laying low whenever possible. She needed both Blake and Aditi, if not for whatever this supposed plan was that could get them all out of this (and until she heard the plan itself she wasn't putting any stock in that), then for having two people between herself and danger as opposed to one.

But she also needed to eat and apparently Blake was going to be a problem with that. So, conflicted.

"Maybe like, yeah, actually give him space. But if you were in our shit you really gotta tell us," Cheri said, alternating her attention between the two, "because that definitely ain't cool either. And we're, like, supposed to be on the same team?"

"Hmm. Funny you'd be scared of a little girl like me. Not unless you knew that I know what you were truly doing."

Aditi did not step back when Blake asked, because she did not acquiesce to people who violated her own space. Her bag was an extension of herself, everything she would remain to be lain inside, and the fact that someone else who was obstensibly on their side would even think to go through it was a violation of the trust she'd shown to all four of these people. Trust that had been seemingly misplaced, come to think of it.

She shouldn't have even been going through this. Sakurako and Adele shouldn't have been off on their own mission, Blake shouldn't be going through her stuff, Cheridene shouldn't have been wandering around doing god knew what else - it should all have been what Aditi needed them to do. Like Cheridene said, they were supposed to be on the same team. There were two teams, and those teams were her classmates, and the people who put them on this island in the first place. The avenues forward led only to a victory for the other team, except in the rare case of being able to provide a stalemate which tipped the board over.

However, while Aditi did not step back when Blake asked, she did step backwards slightly when Cheridene asked, while still keeping him in reach. She now meant more to Aditi than Blake would, so her requests were important, needed. They were as on the same page as they could be in the circumstances.

"She's right, and that's one of many things you need to understand. The same team, the same supplies, the same food. If you want to ask for something, ask for it. There is a chance I will let you have it. But stealing makes someone no better than anyone who has taken a life here, because they're not playing in the interests of the team, are they?"

Blake could pretend he was an innocent little boy all he wanted, but the fact remained that the three other girls would always trust Aditi over him. At the end of the day, though, Aditi was not playing 3D Chess, or the Game of Thrones, or Survivor. She wasn't attempting to ape an intricate politician, she was trying to save their lives, and that meant grouping together. The goal for all of them was to live, and that should have been enough, but some people truly assumed their own lives were more important than others.

She needed Blake to understand, even if she had to make him.

"Scared?" Blake said, smirking a bit in amusement, "Nah, it's just not polite to hit a good-looking lady like yourself."

Admittedly, Aditi was partly right on that. Now that he has his head together, at least somewhat, he felt more uneasy if anything. Sure, he wasn't especially close with the others, but they didn't really have any reason to hate him either. Assuming he doesn't screw it up, he can put some doubt onto Aditi's case or at least try to minimize the damages.

No matter what happened, though, he's going to have to keep a close eye on her. She knew what she saw. She's right to call him out. She's going to try to discredit him and likely try to force him to be the test subject in whatever plans she had. If he resisted, she could convince the other girls to go after him.

All the more reason to keep fighting.

Aditi went on about how Blake needed to understand how to be a part of a team and that he should ask first instead of just taking what he wants. He immediately glared at her. Who the hell does she think she is, telling him that he needs to understand it? He was a part of the goddamn JROTC, of course he fucking does! That Senior Army Instructor Leadership ribbon was given to him for a goddamn reason! This girl obviously doesn't know who he was and she was trying to make herself superior to him in spite of it.

He felt obligated to correct her.

"Don't come in here and tell me that I need to understand how things work." Blake said in a raised voice, "You obviously don't know who I am. I'm enlisted in the JROTC program and I have ribbons in academics, sports, and especially in leadership! I earned them! My instructor was proud of me when he gave me the ribbon for that last one-" he took a step towards Aditi, "-and I would appreciate it if you don't make him look like a fool."

Letting it sit for a few seconds, he took a step back from her and took a deep breath. That's...probably going to convince Cheri to try to get Aditi to back off. Or he just unintentionally screwed himself.

Regardless, he kept the act going and spoke again.

"If I stole from one of you and he finds out..." Blake trailed off and gave the two girls a slightly tired look. "Now, if you're done making baseless accusations, can we discuss the plan?"

WOULD YOU JUST SHUT THE HELL UP!?

... Is what Cheridene wanted to scream at Blake. All she wanted was for the tension to ease up. Miraculously, Aditi had listened to her. She had every right to be angry and Cheridene still felt herself to be on the same wavelength with her. Knocking Blake good wasn't going to fix that, but damn it probably would have felt good. Blake was now, it seemed, doing his damndest to push them back in that direction by getting in Aditi's face about it when like... dude, come on, you were caught. But reason had to prevail, because once they lost that, they became sitting ducks and, most importantly, she lost the strands of support they had. She'd lose at least one, but with her luck, it'd be two, and she'd have to retreat to go find Sakurako and Adele. Three was less than five. Quick maffs.

So Cheri didn't yell, because that wouldn't help. But her cheeks felt awfully tight now.

"Dude, just own it. It doesn't matter if like... you did it or not, now, 'cuz like..." she waved her hands in an ultimately meaningless gesture. As meaningless as this whole scenario. "... It's not worth kicking you to the curb over. I don't think you'd really be worried about what your instructor thought in like, a life or death situation. Plus that don't mean nothing to either of us. ... And we can't discuss the plan until the others get back. Remember?"

Whatever the plan was. She'd almost forgotten about that for a second in the face of whatever THIS was.

Aditi looked Blake up and down.

Her expression did not change, but all of her veneers fell to the ground.

"You do have a lot of words for someone who goes down just as easily as the rest of us."

And then, her fist flew towards his gut.

"You really need to kiss Demetri like that? Y'know a guy like that's gonna get ideas."

((Adele Jones, continued from why does mario sometimes jumps and sometimes he fists))

So, okay, that was a hell and a half of a bust, but Adele supposed she could go and count her blessings that she didn't get killed in there. Not to be judgey or anything, but if she was going to have to make a list for who she thought would either be dead physically or spiritually by like 12 hours in, both Charelle and Demetri would've been right up at the top. No shade- Well, all the shade, because it wasn't as if they were around, but she still supposed she could trickle in just a little bit of advice, see if it'd drop right into 'Rako's brain.

"Like, don't think I'm trying to be rude here," She said, tilting her head with eyebrows raised. "But be careful, okay? Gotta be smart out here."

She'd seen no need to be all polite and given an offer of good luck out the house, because to be totally honest, there were more important people she was saving her luck for, right? That was rude, unvirtuous, ungodly, but she was gonna make the best of what she had, and she was not going to have some idiots follow her along just because she was interested in being lovey-dovey. Anyways, she and 'Rako were already making their way back to the house, setting back up again, so it was too late.

Kinda terrifying, really, still taking every step and knowing that something could be just around the corner, knowing something could just be right there, but Adele tried to keep her wits about her and stick right by her side, ready to poke someone out. She knew that didn't really work, but having something sharp in her hands still helped the bumping of her heart slow down.

Soon enough, with her partner or whatever in their good cop-actually competent cop routine, the garish purple house came into view. All good, good, maybe even great.

Opened the front door, nothing. Kept on going.

Slowly, surely, taking a quick glance back at the other girl, she turned the knob, opened a bedroom door, and-

"What the fu...what in the world is going on here?"

Stick out, eyes glaring. This was either an assault case or some kinda larceny, and either way, Adele was going to put a stop to it.

"I won't make a habit of it, but I wanted a taste of how the other half of the school lives."

What if she'd done what she wanted her whole life, with no mind to anyone at all? Not being mean, Wyatting an unsuspecting populace, just...

Her smile at Adele was soft, genuine as she nodded. It didn't seem rude at all, chiding more gentle than she'd honestly expected from the other girl. Not wanting to put her in danger was enough incentive to play things a little less recklessly. She wasn't prepared to see their entire class as potential foes just yet, but people were changing all around them. The stage was built, set, and ready for more of their bodies to decorate it's floor.

"I wish I was the kind of smart that could figure out our new jewelry, but I've got your point. Unlike some people..."

Not that she was angry at the pair they'd left at the shack, just a little huffy.

But there was no distraction from the thought that they could be being watched, followed back. Part of it surely was the cameras, but it made her itch for something more than what they'd gotten together. That Minecraft pick was going to get a darn good gripping once she got back to the house.

The relief at the sight of it almost made it feel like home. The lack of dead bodies to greet her added to that feeling, and she shut the door behind them before heading to the bedroom to drop off her bag and watch Blake get punched, apparently?

((Sakurako A. Jackson continued from why does mario sometimes jumps and sometimes he fists))

There were so many good one-liners for this that Sakurako could do nothing but clap her hand over her mouth in real surprise and even realer restraint.
