Hiding From The Truth

Open (After The First Announcement)

The First Missionary Church, located at the center of town, is the oldest and largest building in Cabeza del Dragón, originally constructed by Spanish missionaries who first settled the area. The church has since gone through numerous renovations, although much of its original architecture has been preserved. The main doors open directly into a high-ceilinged interior area, primarily filled with two columns of pews. There are six stained glass windows flanking the pews three to a side, with a seventh larger window depicting the crucifixion of Christ located behind a fancifully-carved pulpit and above an ancient organ that despite the outward appearance of its old pipes is still capable of producing some bars. Through a door situated behind the main pulpit and alongside the organ is the priests' quarters, which is made up of a small combined kitchen and living area, study, and bedroom. There are many books lining the shelves of a bookcase, but there are gaps and disturbed dust where some texts have been removed.

“Okay, I can help, yeah.” Michelle said, swinging her bag in front of her and undoing the zipper. There were a few seconds taken where she went through it, tried to find her water bottle in the mess of it all (what was that swimsuit looking thing that took up so much room?) and eventually did, pulling it out with a tug and holding it in front of her, offering it to the people still far across the room from her. She’d felt thirsty all the way from the apartments to here, and the sight of the nearly full water bottle made that desire to get something down her throat stronger, but she resisted the urge. It’d go to a better cause if the water helped Sam. Maybe if there was any left, then she’d take some, help herself. It wouldn’t really change or challenge all the wrong that had been done already, but…

Help others, then help herself.

That seemed like a good enough plan to live by.
To her surprise, sleeping had done her some good.

It wasn’t anything like an actual bed, yet alone the one in her room where she could sleep with all the rabbits and bears (no no don’t think about the fact that you’re never going to see it again don’t don’t) but it’d still been good. It let her relax, sleep, and finally gave her a moment where she could escape everything that had happened t- yesterday, that was yesterday now. Sleeping had allowed her to put things into perspective as well, slightly. She hadn’t attained inner peace, or anything — man, if it meant anything resembling peace she’d k- no no no no making jokes about that no letting Morton be made light of — but she’d still been able to achieve something, process everything. Now she felt as if she could function, manage, with all the things that had happened so quickly.

It wasn’t great, everyone would tell Michelle that, but it was a good enough start, maybe enough for her to start doing things today. Start doing what she wanted to do.

Be a better person than yesterday.

She’d woken up slightly earlier than the others and hadn’t done anything that would make her not the only person awake because that felt like the nice thing to do. She knew how good escape from all this felt and she wasn’t going to take it away from anyone else. Instead, she sat. Looked at the door of the church, saw the sun-drenched dirt outside. Would they be leaving today? She had to think about that. Give her something to do, while she-

There was a screech and she immediately moved to block her ears but the moment the noise had been replaced with someone’s voice she slowly let them down. Moved her head from the church door to the church floor. Right. This. There’d be more people dead and killers out there to match, both of them things standing between her and what needed to be done. She kept her ears out, as all the names — the people she’d known, now gone or completely changed like her — were read out. Winced at Barry, at Lena. Nodded, as the man on the speakers told her not to be like Fleurette. Winced for Daniel and winced for-

Anvi.

Dead. Not killed. Had been emptied with an entire cylinder’s worth of bullets by Oliver.

She took a breath in, sharp, stressed. She couldn’t let it out. She couldn’t do anything she couldn’t think she couldn’t breathe and-

“No-” she gasped, the breath coming out and nothing else coming in.

There was something about this, standing in a church around their bleeding classmate, desecrating God's house or whatever the fuck, that felt pretty counterculture. Helping each other when they were told to kill.

Ashley held onto that through the night. It was all she had to hold onto.
The screech jerked Ashley awake, and she bumped her head against the pew she'd been leaning on. She muttered a curse under her breath as she rubbed the back of her head, mussing her hair, while everything came back to her.

Sam was still breathing, and that was good. Everything else, not so much.

Ashley sat with her hands balled into fists on her legs. More dead. More dead, more than last time. People she knew, people she liked. Even the ones she didn't like, because this wasn't right, this wasn't who they were, not a bunch of fucking sheep herded by loudspeaker to eat each other alive. Maybe that made them wolves, really, but wolves weren't made to be led either. This metaphor had gotten away from her.

Ashley's internal mangling of metaphors was interrupted by Michelle, as per usual. What was she, the fucking Babysitter's Club? But she shouldn't feel resentful about that, even if Michelle had fucked things all up, because Michelle wasn't the enemy, and now she was freaking out.

"Hey," Ashley said, her voice cutting hoarsely across the end of the announcement and whatever Michelle might have been babbling about. "Hey, quit it. Breathe." She moved and grabbed Michelle by the shoulders in a motion that was becoming familiar, and then pulled Michelle's back against her chest. "Fucking breathe, come on." Ashley took a deep, instructional breath to motivate Michelle to follow along.

Sam was up too, also babbling. Oliver. Sure, whatever. Oliver was a knob, and he'd proven himself additionally a rat and an idiot. You didn't accidentally shoot someone ten times, or whatever. Based on Sam's testimony, it didn't sound like as much of a lie as some of the other things.

Thing was, Sam was still as fucked up as he had been the night before, and he wanted to go do some vigilante justice on that bum leg. He wasn't going to get far - not on his own, at least. Babysitter's Club indeed.

"You don't even know where he is," Ashley said flatly. "But fuck, whatever. I need to move. I'll go." If they didn't find Oliver quickly, it was an easy job for Ashley to haul Sam back by his collar, in the state he was in. If they did find Oliver... well she might do that anyway, depending on how many bullets Oliver had left. It was easy enough for him to become the newest face that needed a fist in it, but guns beat hands.

Ashley squeezed Michelle's shoulders. "If you want to stay here and rest, we'll head back after a bit. This place is pretty safe." Ignoring Calista in the side room as evidence that it might not be. Ashley was pretty into ignoring Calista right now.

Kian had been jolted awake by the announcements coming to life and he sat up more to focus on what was being said. He felt guilty about a lot of their classmates dying for senseless meanings and he wondered if there was a chance where he would have no choice in the matter of whether to kill someone or not. He would rather not and he wanted to pretty much stick it to the Americans.

One person's death suddenly caught him off-guard. Also the person who had done it as well.

Dan and Cassandra.

Kian felt a tear roll down his cheek over that fact that his friend Dan had been killed by the girl that he and Molly had saved from Sebbo. Was this karma for trying to be a good person in a messy situation? The person he had wanted to find was dead and he had no goal of what to do next. Molly. You shouldn't forget that you have to find Molly before it's too late.

Sam was talking about leaving and looking for Oliver to stop him from killing everyone else. Kian wondered if that meant Oliver was going for a murder-suicide plan. Which felt like an insane thing to do and Kian didn't have the energy yet to move on from the Church. It looked like Ashley was willing to do with Sam and Kian was sure that Ashley would make sure to keep Sam safe. He wanted to have some time to mourn the loss of Dan.

"I.... I think that I will stay here. I need to be able to think rational before I can go back out there and this place is pretty much a safe haven for us." For now. Kian said to the others in a low, sad-sounding voice and he turned to look at the others more carefully. "Just make sure to be careful out there and please come back safe and sound."

He really didn't want to lose anyone else. So he had to make sure he had a plan to look for where Molly might have went and then he could ask the others about whether they would help him out with it later. He hoped that they would even if Molly was someone that they might not want to see or find. He still felt bad that he had lost her and now losing a friend like Dan.... He had to find Molly before anything might happen to her or to him.

Sam leaned unsteadily on his cane as he eyed the rest of the group making their decisions. It was a little disappointing to have only one person coming along, but as things stood, he could have done a lot worse. Criticism of her politics aside, Ashley was a fighter, and she had shown herself to be reliable enough for the time being.

Still, while he could see that there was some decent logic in having people stay behind to secure the hideout, their efforts wouldn't be of much use if they failed to stop Oliver, a strong possibility at the moment. Two melee weapons weren't exactly a good matchup against a gun.

A chill went down Sam's spine as the weight of his chosen course of action began to weigh down on him. The thought of shuffling off one's mortal coil wasn't exactly a pleasant one, even without taking into account how essential his survival would be towards making sure his classmates got out of here.

Unfortunately, it was clear that he had no choice in the matter. There was no time to waste. He swallowed hard before giving a wave over to Ashley and limping out the door.

"Alright then, let's go."

Good, fine, whatever. Probably better that Kian decided to hang out and keep an eye on things. The way Michelle was going, she'd have wandered off into traffic if there was any, had someone not been looking out for her.

It wasn't fucking fair. They needed more time to grieve, time to just sit and stew in their own emotions. Nobody had even brought up Morton, more concerned with making sure Sam got through the night, and now there was so much more. It was like he'd just been up and swept away in the tide.

And Oliver was one of those responsible for the tide, sure, but everyone but Ashley seemed to be losing sight of the bigger picture. Oliver was a fuck, but someone else had given him the gun. The problem was, even if she kept that in mind, Ashley was at a loss for what to do about it. The Yanks seemed to be having a hell of a time sitting around and watching all of them break down and turn on each other, just like they'd done to their own kids.

The real monsters were too far away to reach. All Ashley had was this wild goose chase, but something to do was better than nothing.

Something, not nothing. Ashley made that her mental mantra as she gathered her things and followed Sam out the door.

((Molly McKenzie continued from Drowning in a Hellhole))

Molly had never been one to pray, beg on her knees to some unknown power. She wasn't that kind of girl, a good girl who thought that they were being merciful and saved, despite looking down on others who did not believe in that far away miracle. Miracles didn't exist, and life always tore things away from those who didn't deserve it. Besides, if this 'God' that those Christians believed existed....

Where does that leave them? Where does that leave Molly McKenzie? Were they really so forsaken by God, that Loving Creator had left them in this hellhole? To be consumed by hell itself? Was God really letting the Americans kill an entire class of people, people who had dreams, and people who loved them? If that's the case...she let the devil and hell consume her whole. She'll rather a horrible, sinning liar like herself dance with demons, than be taken into the Saving Grace of Heaven by such a hypocritical God.

After all, Molly's own prayers, were always unanswered. If this God watched over her, then he was doing a horrible job, or that he couldn't help them despite wishing to. Both thoughts were just as bad.

This holy church, decorated with glass windows and a wonderful gothic look, was nothing more then a faux-Holy Land. Truly, there was nowhere here that wasn't desecrated with ungodly impurity. Her vision hazy, and her thoughts even more so, Molly walked into the church. She paid no attention to the glass windows showing the life of some poor, unfortunate man. She was not in a state of mind to think of superficial things.

Superficial things like the announcement. She didn't want to hear it. She had not repeated the mistake of overhearing the first announcement, and had covered her ears during the latest one. She had heard nothing. Molly couldn't tell if that was more of a good thing or a bad thing.

As she walked further in, Molly's nose caught the smell of something horrible. An old corpse smell, rotting and ever so slowly decaying. Gasping and covering her nose, Molly collapsed onto a nearby pew, dropping her duffel bag next to her. A few people walked past her, Molly didn't care to see who they were. They didn't intend to harm her, and that was all Molly needed.

Standing up despite her nausea due to the smell of rotting flesh, Molly looked ahead of her. There were a few peop-

There was a boy with dirty blond hair. Molly recognised him immediately after her foggy vision cleared up. She felt her stomach drop along with the sledgehammer she held.

No way.

((Pippa Andolini continued from Everyone's Got Their Own Circle of Sadness))

Pippa rinsed the water from one of Freya's bottles over her hand. She couldn't do much about the bit of blood on her uniform jacket, but she was sure she could explain it away. After all, what was there to lie about? Freya assaulted her, so Pippa had to stab her before she could do much worse. Pippa now had a bruise on her jaw and was missing an incisor, so she had plenty of evidence in her favor. It wasn't a lie at all. She was attacked, and she had to defend herself. That was one of the principles for how to survive in such a place, so why couldn't Pippa follow it.

Once her hand was sufficiently less bloody, Pippa packed her bag and picked up Freya's rifle. She felt way more powerful holding such a tool compared to the little knife she was given at the start. Maybe this was where some of Freya's audacity came from. Pippa was willing to lean into that, but not so much she'd be a raging hell beast who was foolish enough to think that Philippa Andolini was anyone to underestimate.

Pippa had been walking around after she left the house. Fisher didn't pursue her or try to get a revenge kill, so Pippa could just write him off. She took a momentary break for water and clean up. She was no longer bleeding from her mouth, so she could even try to eat bread on the one side of her mouth that wasn't sore. She was getting near the church, and figured it'd be good to go in. Pippa's family was Roman Catholic, so it wouldn't hurt to get a prayer in while she was here. After all, she still broke a commandment with Freya even if it was self defense. A prayer could get rid of any minute voices in the back of her head that might say it was wrong.

Pippa made her way over to the main entrance, peering in a bit. It looked like some girl was inside. She couldn't see if anyone else was there, but that meant there was at least one potential enemy to deal with.

"Well, I can surely handle this," she muttered to herself. "I can do anything if I really put my mind and hands to it."

Pippa slowly pushed the door open.

Everything felt so foreign to Michelle.

It was like she was watching herself, seeing what was happening through the eyes of someone in the distance. Ashley was roughing her up, trying to get her to breathe, but Michelle couldn’t feel her touch, only swayed with the tide of Ashley’s hold, went wherever it went. Ashley and Samuel left, but Michelle could only watch as her body stayed still, looked towards the floor. Molly, Pippa had appeared, but Michelle didn’t say anything, only attempting to breathe, trying to calm down but only finding her body sputtering, failing, finally remembering where it was and now knowing that there was no reprieve, no way things could ever be pleasant again.

Because Anvi was gone.

And even despite everything happening to her, the simple fact of that still hadn’t been processed. She knew what death here was now — the reminder sending ripples of what she’d done to Morton through her head — but it didn’t feel the same. Anvi didn’t feel like Ms. Horton she didn’t feel like Mr. Shaw didn’t feel like Morton she felt like Anvi because she was Anvi and now she was gone and now Michelle would never be able to see her, talk to her again and she didn’t know what to do about that and she still didn’t know whether that had actually happened and there were people leaving people here and she couldn’t be here she couldn’t deal with this she had to be alone she had to find someplace where nobody would see her and-

A breath. Sharp. Clear.

“I can’t be here,” she said to nobody. “I need to be…”

Silence, from Michelle. No conclusion.

Kian couldn't even move from where he was sitting after Ashley and Samuel had left and he felt more tears running down his cheeks, droplets were hitting his hands that were on his lap. He couldn't hold back how heart-broken and sad he was over Dan's death. Why, why, why? Why couldn't he have been fast enough to find Dan? Maybe then he could have done something to stop Cassandra from what she did.

Too late.... You're too late, Kian. Now Dan is gone and Molly is still missing because you couldn't do anything right.

Kian suddenly stopped crying as he heard Michelle's voice and he knew that he needed to be brave for her. Until Samuel and Ashley got back. He had to make sure that he was stronger for her and not let her down. He wiped away from the pitiable tears with the back of his hand and he sniffed a few times.

He picked up the rapier and he got up to his feet slowly. He then turned to look at the entrance of the church and he noticed that Pippa was making her way inside. He gave her a small nod, a friendly smile and a wave with his free hand. "Hey, Pippa." He said in a welcoming way and then he lowered his waving hand to his side. "I hope you are doing okay besides... all of this."

He then looked towards the pews more and then his eyes widened at the sight of someone that he thought that he would not be seeing so soon. His heart felt like it was beating with happiness and sadness at seeing her.

"M-Molly...?"

Molly should have been happy, relieved. But instead, there was a dead-knot in her stomach when she saw Kian. Molly was happy, but at the same time, she was...sad? Terrified? She couldn't quite describe it, but it was an unpleasant feeling for sure. Molly absentmindingly picked up the sledgehammer again lightly, slowing walking torwards the teary boy with nary an expression asides from frozen horror on her.

She could have sworn her resolve was stronger then this, she could have sworn it atleast falling apart at the seams. Survive and go home, no matter what. That was what Molly had promised herself. But with Kian, that 'no matter what' part was getting shakier by the second. Molly tried to speak, but words failed her.

What could they talk about? She wasn't about to think about the announcement, much less talk about it, and this really wasn't the time to be showing off her nails or anything like that. Molly opened her mouth multiple times, and then closed it again once she realised had nothing to say. It wasn't until a particular thing fell out of her unzipped duffel bag, that she realised something.

Molly quickly bent down, and held the pink bunny with both hands, and kept it close to her chest. She took a deep breath, and put on a weak smile. She was known back in school for always putting on a big, botox-like smile or smirk, and hardly if ever showed any upset feelings in front of anyone. Why shouldn't she try and do that here?

"...Hey, Kian. Would you like this back, since it's yours and all?"

Molly knew neither him nor her had any use for it, since they both had their own weapons (In fact, that rapier was the only reason Molly was avoiding getting too close to Kian.), but sentimentality still existed, it wasn't like it just suddenly disappeared and now everything's either practical or useless.

"So...what's happened with you? Anything bad?"

Well obviously not, since Kian wasn't on either side of the announcement, but Molly needed an icebreaker. Now that she was finally not alone, Molly started to feel....better? Turning around to take a look at the stained glass windows, Molly tried to calm down after that...whole thing with..that killer. Molly also caught sight of other people, and now that she was in a better mood, Molly waved at them. She didn't HAVE to follow her resolve...quite yet.

Of course, that mood was broken as soon as Molly realised just WHO the people in the building were. Molly's small smile collapsed, and her expression turned to one of horror as she gasped. She quickly held her sledgehammer up instinctively in defence.

She recognised Michelle, and not just from school either. In fact, if it was just that, Molly wouldn't even remember that justice-minded snitch. No, she was a name she remembered from the announcements, and since she wasn't a corpse yet...

As Pippa walked further in, her hand still gripping the rifle tightly, she was finally able to make out who was in here. Apparently, there were two additional people, so Pippa found herself in the company of Michelle White, Kian Banks, and Molly McKenzie. She was closer to Molly, who Pippa remembered for being quite social but a bit of a bully. Pippa didn't like the idea of bullying. If you wanted to prove you were better than someone, you could do so with tangible success in academics, athletics, and career success. You didn't need to be petty or physically intimidate them to make yourself feel taller.

Kian and Michelle were people she didn't know as well, Kian being an artistic rebel type and Michelle being a journalist with a penchant for justice. Of course, Pippa had to remember that Michelle had earlier killed someone, so Pippa would have to be weary of her. Not to call the kettle black, but no one here knew Pippa had to kill yet, and Pippa was the only one who seemed to be armed with a firearm. Thus, Pippa shouldn't have to be afraid. She could control the situation.

Kian had greeted Pippa quite amicably, so Pippa decided to reciprocate.

"Hello, Kian. Molly. Michelle." Pippa said in a pleasing and polite tone. "Of course I could be better, but I feel I'm handling myself well all things considered. I'm still alive, after all, which I think is a mark of my general success so far."

Pippa would have to be careful. She had no clue if any of these people would be so flippant and moronic as Freya or as useless as Fisher. She'd need to mind herself if she was truly to do well here.

It was as if she hadn’t even said anything.

The conversation continued around her, but it was clear she’d been placed outside it. She’d given her words and then the others gave their words in return except it was clear that there was some error in sending, receiving them, because her words hadn’t changed what their words were. They’d acknowledged her — Pippa had, anyway — but they hadn’t responded. She was whatever she was looking like with the everything that had happened just before and they couldn’t notice, didn’t care. Was this how much they had changed? Had so much happened to all of them over the past day that seeing her the way she was no longer seemed abnormal? Had this place changed them and made them less caring, more likely to kill her the moment-

No. No. No. She couldn’t let herself think like that. Even now, the people here were still people. They wouldn’t fall just because they were told to. Not after a day, at least. They wouldn’t fall-

Like she had?

Because it was obvious. Everyone here could see it but they were only just being polite and not pointing it out. They thought that maybe if they ignored the freak show going on in front of them it would go away, leave them be. She knew she had to do that so that she could stop bothering them with everything that had happened to her. She had to go. She had to leave. She knew that she needed to stay she knew that Ashley would want to come back to her (wrong word she hoped it she hoped it she hoped it) but she had to be somewhere not here. She had to stand up. Get her legs standing on the empty ground, like she was doing right now. She had to move somewhere and-

“I need to go.”

-see that room with the closed door right next to her open the door walk through shut it and don’t look back.

Kian had wanted to stop Michelle from wandering into the room with Calista's body but he was too late to get a word out as she was gone. To be fair, he guessed she just needed to clear her head and he was going to give her that space. He was just worried about how she would react to the body. Maybe when Ashley and Samuel got back; he could get Ashley to be there for Michelle. Right now, he was the only one who could take care of Michelle until they did come back.

"Oh, uh.... I don't need it, Molly. You can keep it." He said honestly and then his expression turned to one of pure hurt and sadness. "I just can't believe that the girl we saved, Cassandra, killed someone. And that someone had been my friend, Dan. I just... I can't understand why she did it, Molly. How can people give in so easily? This is just a nightmare."

Kian let out a sad sigh and he made sure that the rapier was lowered at his side. Although, Faith would be screaming at him to keep it up in case he got attacked. He didn't think that he was going to get attacked by anyone and he had no reason for a cause of alarm.

Molly had the opposite reaction to Michelle leaving. She was not trying to stop Michelle, if anything, having that murderer gone was a good thing. She wasn't even sure why, really. After all, if she opposed killing, then Molly would have gotten rid of her sledgehammer, thrown it into the sea along with herself. And what about that decision she made in that warehouse? It sure wasn't a decision a pacifist would make.

She was such a hypocrite. Who knows, maybe it was Michelle who was the person who didn't want to kill anyone, and accidently did. That left Molly being the dangerous one. At the same time though, Molly couldn't resist madly smirking at the fact that the annoying, 'justice for all!' girl, was one of the first to start playing the American's game.

Molly looked up at Kian, and strangely...she wasn't sad, happy or anything like that. Kian no longer had that familiarity that had prevented her from distrusting Kian. It was just like...he was another face. It was a good thing, she supposed, if Molly had to take anymore emotions in...she'll probably break completely. Maybe she did already. Maybe that was why she was now putting on a strange, sincere but hollow act of bravado.

"I remember. Cassandra was a quiet, unassuming little weirdo. Maybe...maybe she finally decided to come out of her shell. I can't understand why she'll pick Dan to....you know."

Dropping the pink bunny on the floor, Molly kicked it away from her. It wasn't a malicious act, even if it could be interpreted as so. After all, Molly nor Kian needed it anymore.

"Maybe it isn't giving in. Everyone wants to go home, everyone wants to see their parents...their friends again. No one wants to die. When you're faced in a...place like this, where everyone is hoping for the exact same thing....you have to fight."

....Huh? When did Molly's words become so calm? Collected? Utterly logical without hardly an emotion in her tone. She surprised herself with her words, but she couldn't say she disagreed with them. She wasn't thinking of words, or anything even. Molly's mind was filled with an empty, thoughtless clarity.

"I can think up of the reason why she did it. It's the same reason everyone else has: She wanted to live. Even if it it means others won't."

She didn't know why, but the grip around her sledgehammer tightened.

Pippa's eyes glanced over as Michelle left the room. That was a bit of a relief. Michelle was the least trustworthy person in this room, so she could saunter off and leave the rest of them alone. It sounded like Kian and Molly had their own negative response to another killer, in this case, Cassandra. Pippa could see that the two of them were trying to understand why Cassandra had committed murder, and Pippa just had to nod along.

"Indeed," Pippa said. "It's clear others are willing to go along with the Americans' plan if it means they'll live. Of course, we should try to survive as long as possible."

Pippa glanced over Kian and Molly, then over to where Michelle went. They did have a killer in the building, and while Pippa at least defended herself from a woman who wanted to harm her, she didn't have a read on Michelle, and she needed to know if Kian and Molly did.

"Well, at least we seem to have some protection in case we come across anyone dangerous," she said, glancing at Molly's sledgehammer and Kian's rapier. "Of course, I can't speak for Michelle. Have you two accounted for her?"
