Artemis "Artie" Qiu

#1

Post by CondorTalon »

Name: Artemis "Artie" Qiu
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Place of Residence: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Language/s: English, Mandarin
Hobbies and Interests: Mountain biking, first-person shooters, rock music, playing the guitar, horror media

Appearance: Artie is 5'6" and 128 lbs, with a slender yet fit frame. She has short, wavy hair that goes down just past her chin, brown eyes, a small, mousey nose, and thin lips. Her face is round and mostly free of blemishes, although she does have a long scar on her right cheek.

Artie eschews fashion for clothes that are easy to move around in, and is a very casual dresser. Her wardrobe consists of t-shirts, hoodies, jeans, and sweatpants. On the day she was abducted, Artie was wearing a purple hoodie over a black t-shirt, jeans, and black running shoes. A week and a half before she was abducted, Artie had broken her ankle in a mountain biking accident, and had been put in a cast. She currently uses crutches to walk.

Biography: Artie was born on January 29th to Hai and Lily Qiu in Vancouver, British Columbia. She is the oldest of three children, with her brother Vincent being born two years after her and her sister Minnie being born three years after. The Qiu family are fairly comfortable financially, with both parents working in IT, Hai at a government office and Lily at a bank. The Qiu household also includes Artie's maternal grandmother Xiulan, who lives with the family and looks after the Qiu children while the parents are at work. Because of this, Artie has a closer relationship with her grandmother than with her parents. Artie also doesn't interact much with her siblings, either, as they don't have any interests in common.

Artie had always been a rambunctious and adventurous child, always running around and revelling in physical activities. In her elementary school years she got along well with the other energetic kids in her grade. While she had an outlet for her energy while playing with her classmates, the situation at home was a different story. Since Artie only had her infant siblings and her grandmother to interact with, in practice Artie spent much of her time running around and generally being a handful. Hai and Lily quickly decided that they needed to find some sort of hobby that Artie could pour her energy into in a less destructive way. However, because the two were busy, they enlisted the help of Mary, Artie's older cousin. Mary was a very energetic and sporty person, and she lived relatively close by, so Artie's parents decided that she was the perfect person to channel Artie energy into something most productive, or at the very least, less destructive.

With Mary's urging, Artie's parents bought her a bicycle. Mary was extremely into mountain biking, and thought that, as Artie got older, she could get good at navigating rougher terrain. As Artie continued to play with her friends at school, Mary became Artie's main playmate at home, at least, whenever Mary was free to hang out. Mary introduced Artie to many different interests of herself, but as Artie grew older, only two of them have stuck with her: mountain biking and first-person shooters.

Artie was introduced to FPSes when she was thirteen years old. Mary was a big fan of shooters like Rainbow Six Siege and others that required a bit of strategy and planning. However, Mary wasn't sure how well Artie would handle these types of shooters, so she instead elected to introduce her to more straightforward shooters like the Call of Duty series. Artie picked up to these games quickly, and it wasn't long before she was playing the same games that Mary liked to play. Artie's parents weren't concerned with the violence found in these games; they subscribed to the theory that playing violent video games had no impact on the mindset of the players. They decided, however, that if they noticed a negative change in Artie's behavior, and were able to link said change to those games that she played, they would intervene. Fortunately, this didn't end up happening.

It was also around this time that Artie started really getting into rock music. Artie had never really been into listening to music, but this changed when one of Artie's friends introduced her to his album collection. Artie quickly begin to really love rock music, and eventually started to buy her own albums, though she mainly downloaded digital albums, instead of physical albums like her friend did. As Artie got more and more into rock music, she wanted more and more to learn to play the guitar. After talking about it with her parents, they finally paid for guitar lessons when she turned fourteen. Artie now plays the guitar regularly, using a rented guitar. She mostly plays covers of songs that she likes.

As Artie grew older, she did indeed transition from biking on-road to biking off-road. As she began to take her bike off-road more often, she would often join Mary and her friends through the mountainous trails of Vancouver. As the youngest person in the group, Artie was always looked after, to make sure that no serious injuries befell her, though some minor injuries were inevitable. Artie is no stranger to pain, having accumulated a plethora of nasty bruises and scrapes throughout her life.

It was around her seventeenth birthday when Artie began to really get into horror media. It all started with horror movies. Artie was never a big movie buff, but she really began to get into them when one of her friends invited her and several others for a horror movie night. Artie accepted, and it was there that she was really awakened to the horror genre. Over the following weeks and months, she expanded from horror movies to horror art, TV shows, books, and games.

Artie attends Dame Smith Secondary School, a public high school on the low end of the city's rankings. Artie is not academically smart, and has struggled in school throughout her life. In high school, her grades hover around the low C's and D's. Artie has trouble sitting still for long periods of time, and therefore has trouble paying attention in class. She has had various tutors over the years, which has stopped her from failing any of her classes, but not much more than that. Artie's academic struggles have caused frction between her and her parents, who are disappointed that it seems unlikely that she'll be able to follow in their footsteps, career-wise. From their perspective, though, they simply think that she chooses not to apply herself fully to her studies, and don't see any underlying problems.

Artie is generally well-liked among her peers, especially her fellow sportspeople and energetic types. At her worst, however, Artie can come off as abrasive or overbearing, which has caused some of her more quiet and bookish classmates to avoid her. Artie tends to do before she thinks, which has caused her trouble at home and at school. One such case resulted in the accident that broke her leg; Artie attempted to ride through a badly-maintained trail and collided with a fallen tree.

Artie doesn't have much in the way of future prospects, which has caused further tension between her and her parents. She avoids thinking about her future, and has put off any serious considerations about what she will do after she leaves high school. With graduation fast approaching, however, Artie has become more and more stressed and uncertain about what she will do after she graduates. The closest idea she has for her future is to maybe get into competitive gaming; Artie has become quite good at FPSes, quickly climbing the ladder in ranked modes. However, she hasn't really looked into how she could actually enter the competitive scene yet.

Advantages: Artie is no stranger to pain and scary situations, and will be generally unfazed by either of these things. Her hand-eye coordination is excellent from playing FPS games, and she is a headstrong person that does not easily waver from her goals.
Disadvantages: Artie is impulsive and tends to act before she thinks. She has a loud and overbearing personality at times, and this may alienate some potential allies. In addition, her mobility has been absolutely shot by the cast on her leg, and if she were to lose her crutches, she would be crippled immensely.

Hey Condor. Nice profile here, just a few minor things I'd like to see changed.
[+] Critiques
Artie was introduced to FPSes when she was thirteen years old. Mary was a big fan of shooters like Rainbow Six Siege, Apex Legends, and others that required a bit of strategy and planning.

The launch date of SOTF International V1 is 2021 and the release date of Apex Legends was 2019, so Artie being 13 and Mary being into Apex Legends already is a bit of a time crime. Easiest fix would just be to remove Apex Legends as an example FPS.

Does her impulsive behavior and inability to pay attention not get attention from her parents as a possible condition requiring intervention? If they care about her academic performance enough to bother her about it and hire tutors then I feel like, sans further elaboration about their parenting style, they might have considered involving a therapist or the like.
Her hand-eye coordination is excellent from playing FPS games
A bit more justification here would be nice- more on her current playing of FPS games in present day. Maybe she's already super good and can get high rankings in competitive modes, stuff like that.
