Hoping to Catch a Break

Midday Day 3, PM for entry

In a remote section in the northwest portion of the island are several grassy hills, overlooking much of the area around them. A trail leading up a slope of one of the smaller hills leads to an isolated hillside cabin in the middle of nowhere. The area around the home is surrounded by a small wooden fence. The property contains the wooden cabin itself and a smaller outhouse. Many overgrown bushes and large trees also surround the area around the hills. The cabin appears older than most of the mining-related buildings, but is actually in somewhat better shape, having been refurbished into a foreman's dwelling and then stripped less carefully as the mining company departed.

They had agreed.

And they had done more than that, as well. Zubin apparently had a plan. The start of an idea that could get the group, the five of them off of this island. Out of this game. Admittedly, Maxwell had his doubts. Although he didn’t want to discredit Zubin, although he didn’t want to insinuate an idea that he wasn’t smart, Maxwell couldn’t help but question whether Zubin- whether anyone could possibly beat this game in that way. The people who had put them here, the people who ran this game, Maxwell assumed that they were smart. More intelligent than the rest of his classmates were. If Zubin wanted to beat this game, if Zubin wanted to save the five of them, he was going to have to somehow pull off what Maxwell assumed would be impossible.

And for some reason, Maxwell doubted that just one person could be capable of doing that.

But still, there was no point in putting down his plan yet. Maybe it would actually work out. Maybe Zubin was smarter, a lot more than the credit Maxwell already gave him. Maybe he had some sort of foolproof plan, one that would allow them to escape here without the terrorists being able to stop them.

(maybe it’s for the best if you feed him, let him believe that you believe in his plan; if he believes it, and if he tries, then that’s one less person you need to worry about)

He nodded. Looked at Zubin.

“Alright, I’ll talk to you about it later,” he said. “Right now we should probably be heading inside. We’ll have-”

(cover from any threat that approaches)

“-a chance to be able to rest, for a bit.”

He smiled at Zubin as he followed the others. Entered the cabin.

Finally returned, back from his attempt to explore the island.

A fat lot of good that had done.
Here again.

Back in the room in which this had all began. Back in the room that he had initially woken up in, questioning why his parents, why Lyndi, why he had convinced himself that going on this lousy school trip would be good for him. Why he had chosen to not be more stubborn, to put his foot down and say that he was not going to waste an entire day looking at fish and dolphins and sharks with the rest of the people in his cohort. The final moments before everything had changed, his arm going around Lyndi’s body as the group of men came in, as Mr. Dolph’s head had been shot off before his very eyes.

How there were people out there. Lyndi, Paris, Felicia. How he had to find them.

How all three of them had still been alive, back then.

(how you had said that you weren’t going to die here, how you weren’t going to just die like Mr. Dolph did)

(how you weren’t going to let any of your inferiors win)

And as the crackling of the speakers began to sound, as Victor began to speak again, Maxwell sat up. Saw the room, saw the chair, saw the cupboard. Moved his body off the bed as Victor began to rattle off names, tell all about who had died and who had sunk to the depravities of this game. He saw his backpack on the chair, felt the sense of deja vu as he picked it up, tried looping one of his arms around the strap, tried dealing with the fact that he couldn’t use the other. Got it around, turned, and headed towards the-

Aria Samuels.

That had given him pause. That was someone he had met on this island. On the cliffs. Travelling with Paris. He remembered. Paris telling him to have Aria go with him and Baxter. Paris promising Maxwell to protect him.

Shot by Natali Greer, helpless and blind.

Another failure to add to the list.

...But at least Jasmine was dead. At least she wouldn’t be one of the people winning this game. At least he would not have to do anything about the fact that a killer - Paris’ killer - was out there. Roaming. Attacking. Killing more.

(even though you could have done it yourself, back there, on the cliffs, you on top of her)

(even though you could have made her pay)

More names. Unimportant ones. He moved out of the room. Took his steps through the cabin, trying to see where everyone else was. Zubin was the one he was hoping on finding, Zubin was the one he felt needed to be talked to first, but he supposed Felicia would be a welcome sight, a welcome-

Jason Andrews.

Stabbed in the back by Saachi Nidal.

There was something he could say.

Words he could think.

Feelings. Sadness that his friend died. Regret at the fact that they had never been able to meet up, that Maxwell had never gotten the chance to try and protect him. That they hadn’t been better friends, back at school. That Maxwell hadn’t talked to him as much, after he had made his steps up to the top.

(relief that you have one less friend that you need to see die)

But he had to push those thoughts away. Put them in the pile with all the other unwelcome ideas, images. He needed to talk to Zubin. That was all that needed to happen right now.

And eventually, Maxwell found him. Standing around. Looking at him.

Time to get down to business.

“So what plan do you have?”

The surrounding area was empty. Nothing to worry about for now. Zubin had his gun, so that was a plus. Nobody would bother them without either wising up or losing a pound of flesh. At least they had the night to themselves - himself, Maxwell, Felicia, Ramona, and the other girl, Yumi or something. So long as they kept watch, they could stay alive for another night.

The night was chilly, but boring. Nobody to talk to, but hey, that was good, probably. Boring was good. Boring was safe. Boring was nobody trying to kill you. Sleeping was complicated. When you wanted to stay awake, you nod off, and when you want to conk out, you spend two hours staring at the ceiling wondering when nap time was going to come.

Morning. Finally. People were here and conscious enough to talk. Light actually gave his body a reason not to collapse on itself. Of course it also meant announcements. So that meant it was, what? Eight, nine AM? Ugh. Either way, Jasmine King was out, so nobody, especially Maxwell, had to worry about her. On the other hand, Katarina and Saachi were racking up the kills, and Miranda had shot someone.

Things were getting complicated. What happened to "Hey, I should go talk to Panya, maybe I'll get in bed with her eventually?"

“So what plan do you have?”

Maxwell finally wanted to know. Good thing Zubin had been thinking about the main ins and outs of this idea. At least enough to realize that he knew exactly what he was up against. He looked Maxwell in the eye (keep that head up!) and started, keeping his voice low to make it as hard as possible for the operators to hear.

"Okay. It goes like this: we know that these collars are what's keeping us tied to the game right? If we can figure out how they work, it's then a matter of defusing the explosives in the collars, taking away their main weapon. They wouldn't be able to blow us up from a distance, meaning that they'd at least have to come over here, while we'd have the run of the island and the ability to remove the collars on our own time once we figure out the problem of them going boom." Zubin sighed. "To be fair, it's not going to be easy. We're talking about going into complicated electronic equipment with nothing to go by, and defusing a specific part of the collar, on the first try, without getting caught. It has to be better than the alternative of waiting to die, though."

Felicia hadn’t slept.

Well, she did doze a bit. But that was different, wasn’t it? Just a few minutes of closing her eyes, then waking up. She couldn’t truly sleep. It just wasn’t possible, she didn’t think. Each time her eyes snapped open, her hand darted towards the GPS and did that same ritual of zooming in and out, only to become relieved when she saw nothing had changed.

She checked and checked, and each time, the same result. But she had to keep checking. Anything for a proper sleep, though.

The morning was much like the last few. Wake up with a groggy head and a sense of fear. She’d been laying on her stomach on floor, zooming in and out again, when the announcement came on. Her muscles tensed up a bit more when she realized that it was just going to be news, more news, of people dying. The names floated over her, of people like Kasumi and Sebastien dying, of Jasmine, a major killer, also dying, of Katarina once again killing. She couldn’t help but think of how grumpy Seb was. She’d flirted with him a bit, and… he was dead, too. They were all dead. Each and last one. Lyndi wasn’t coming back, nor Yaz, nor Eris or Bridgette. Seb wasn’t, either. After the announcement was over, she’d just laid in the same spot under the window. She hadn’t gone back outside since they made it inside.

Eventually, she willed herself to sit up, and looked towards Zubin and Maxwell. They were… talking in a low voice? Felicia leaned her back against the wall, and tried to listen in. She couldn’t help it. It was rude, she knew, but still. She squinted her eyes. Hadn’t Zubin said something about escaping? Maxwell, too? She managed to get the word “electronic” out of Zubin’s words, but not much else.

She said nothing, but it was obvious she was looking.

With her sentry duty done now that everyone was awake, Yumi wasn't left with a solid way to spend her time. The first thing she did was take a drink of water, because she was quite parched, but after that, she sort of floated around the room, not really committing herself to a certain spot. Her natural instinct was to stay with Felicia, since she was her closest friend in the room. But at the same time, she wanted to be able to keep tabs on everyone else, just for posterity's sake. It wasn't that she necessarily didn't trust them, but she did want to be aware of as much of the goings-on as possible.

Neither Felicia nor Ramona had much going on. Both were staying pretty quiet, and she presumed that it was likely for the same reasons as her, trying to figure out what was going on, and how they should react to it. Or maybe they were just thinking over everything, which happened to be another thing that she was doing at the moment. The island really had given her a lot of time to think, just never about anything that she would actually like to have on her mind.

After rounding the room once, Yumi took curiosity in the conversation that Maxwell and Zubin were having off to the side. They were doing a good job of keeping their voices low, so she didn't catch most of what they were saying. Whatever it was, though, they seemed to be really focused on it. If the two of them had a plan, whatever the goal of it was, then she wanted to be aware of it. Attempting to put her natural ability to go unnoticed in a crowd to use, she sidled near them and tried to get an ear on the conversation.

Ramona had scooted a little bit closer to listen in on the conversation, ears trying to pick up every little bit of sound that Maxwell and Zubin were making, in order to glean something from their conversation. Not so much closer that they could see what she was doing, but enough to make out more than bits and phrases. It didn't actually help all that much, however. Heard something about the collars, how it needed to be done on the first try, but nothing besides that. She frowned at the lack of progress she'd been making in deciphering whatever the hell the conversation was even about, but a quick look around confirmed that pretty much everyone else in the room were looking right at the two as well.

It was probably a good thing that these escape plans were being discussed and all of that, but she couldn't help but wish she had been included in the discussion as well. Maybe it was a bit of a petty thing, but being able to lean in and contribute her ideas would've just been peachy keen. At the very least, it probably would have been more entertaining than just sitting around and trying to snoop in on the conversation. God, anything would be better than just sitting around, listening to more and more people die, as she continued to do nothing except hope.

Hope wasn't enough, was it? It had to be backed up by determination, by will, by something other than a girl who kept on believing she could do something, without doing much of anything at all. A method to the madness, an explanation for the seemingly extraordinary. Shirleys did not just sit around, and watch as their friends, their classmates died. Shirleys did something, and so would Ramona.

She turned to Yumi and Felicia, still supporting herself on the wall behind her.

"Honestly, don't know if I can just stay cooped up here. So many people we could help out there, right?"

Ramona pointed at the door, still riddled with bullet holes. Maybe all they had to know was that she wanted to help, that she needed to help. They didn't have to know it was like hearing the screams of the damned, seeing Lyndi's face pop up again and again like a camera that wouldn't stop taking photos. How it felt so crushing, so suffocating, to stay in here discussing things that may have not even mattered in the end. Something could be done, always could, but just staying in here wouldn't solve anything, especially for herself.

Remove the explosive.

Make it so that the people who had put them here - the people who ran this game - couldn’t do anything without coming to the island themselves.

Admittedly, Maxwell had his doubts. Even assuming that they would actually be able to get the collar off, even assuming what Zubin said - that this would be incredibly hard to do on the first try - how would they be able to make it off the island? How would things change from what they were before, from what they were now? They would still be fighting. They would still be trying to avoid death, except this time the competitors would be strong, far stronger than them. The people who had put them here, the people who ran this game, they had more advantages than this group had. Co-ordination. Weaponry. The ability to know where exactly they were supposed to go, where exactly the people that they were hunting were. If one were to put the odds on who would win out, whether Zubin’s plan would win out…

Well.

At least they would be easy odds for Maxwell to bet on.

But still. It was a plan, and he agreed with Zubin. It was better than nothing, better than waiting for death in this cabin.

(and at the very least, if it failed, you would have one less competitor you would need to beat)

(and the blood wouldn’t even be on your hands)

(because you’re so scared of that, aren’t you)

(so scared of what you’re supposed to be)

“Right. It’s a plan,” Maxwell said, looking around. Probably best if the other three knew what they were doing. What they would do. He saw them near the doorway, all three of them together.

Well.

He supposed that was simple enough.

“Everyone, over here,” Maxwell called, shouting slightly. “Zubin has something it’d be best for everyone to know.”

((Saachi Nidal continued from David and Goliath))

There were some places Saachi had not explored on the island, even if it had felt like a lifetime since she was here. With the ever-present danger of the shifting safe zones, she quickly picked up that she couldn't get comfortable with the idea of staying in a single place for the entire time she was on the island. With that in mind, she headed towards the Isolated Cabin, as indicated on the map. Having been a Danger Zone some time ago, she reckoned that it probably would be some time before it would become one again. That was more of an educated guess than anything else, but it gave her something to go off of.

Saachi kept a watchful eye on her surroundings as she made her way, occasionally looking down at the map to ensure that she was going in the correct direction. With how often her name had appeared on the announcements, she was cautious for some would-be, morally superior kid to try and pretend to be a "hero" and try to kill her. While she found the concept of "heroes" in such a game to be laughable, that didn't mean the rest of the class was on her wavelength. While she hoped it wouldn't come down to it, she had to be wary for a Chuck or Kyran-like figure to emerge out of nowhere and attack her. It was for that reason that she also decided to stay in the woods as much as possible, hoping the large trees would mask her presence.

It probably was overkill, but Saachi just wanted to make sure.

You never know what could happen.

Still, as she approached the clearing that led to the house, she stopped.

That was Maxwell.

It was hard not to recognise his voice considering how much he loved it. While she could certainly appreciate his academics and social skills, that was pretty much where any positive feelings towards him ended. Still, she probably should put away thoughts from the past and focus on now. After all, Maxwell sounded like something important was trying to be imparted.

She was like a moth to the light. She had to remind herself to be stealthy as she approached the house, keeping her body low and trying to stay underneath the windows whenever possible. She couldn't tell how many people were there, but there had to be at least 3, including Zubin and Maxwell. Another group forming on the island? She probably was underestimating the odds of her classmates congregating together in situation they were in.

Trying to get as close as possible to the door without being caught, Saachi leaned towards the cabin to try and pick up what was going on there.

Maxwell ... Maxwell believed in the idea. At least, he believed in it enough to give it a go and bring in other people.

“Everyone, over here,” Maxwell called, shouting slightly. “Zubin has something it’d be best for everyone to know.”

Zubin looked over to the door where it was clear that they were all listening in like

Guess I wasn't as subtle as I thought.

"Oh, yeah. Sorry about that. This could go places, but it's vital that we don't let certain people know, hence the, heh, low voice. So I guess we need to get into a huddle."

Felicia tilted her head to the side, listening a bit more. But, eventually, she stood up when Maxwell spoke. The GPS was still tightly gripped in her hands, like a security blanket of sorts. But her eyes weren’t on it. Instead, they were on Maxwell and Zubin.

And hesitantly, she stepped forward.

“Hey…” she said in a low voice of her own. “I… guess I’ve been thinking since...”

She let her fingers on the GPS grip tighter. The past few minutes, seconds? Maybe longer, maybe shorter.

“I don’t know if anything could work. And I’m scared, of… you know… they could do something to us.”

She swallowed some.

“But I’m willing to give it a shot, is what I’m saying. I don’t know what I could do, all I got is this-”

She gestured towards the GPS.

“But I’m willing, right?”

Maybe she could take another look.

Yumi's twitchy fingers tapped the sides of her gun. She may not have gotten much information out of what Maxwell and Zubin were talking about before, but from what she could hear, it seemed like a good concept. Only in terms of concept so far, though. She couldn't deny that what they wanted to do sounded pretty nice, but it was a very, very tall order, and they had minuscule tools and knowledge to actually go about doing so.

Could they escape? Absolutely. Nothing was outside of the realm of possibility. But realistically? They were untrained teenagers with inadequate access to nutrition, and they were equipped with collars that they had little to no knowledge of and could explode if the people behind the operation willed it. To say that the deck was stacked against them was a vast understatement.

But even with everything against them, Yumi couldn't just walk away without so much as giving this crazy plan of theirs a chance. While it was improbable, it was either this or going back to the stated way of getting out, which was to kill until only one person was left. If she wanted any chance of surviving and bringing any of her friends with her, then at least for now, this was the path that she would have to take. She followed Felicia in stepping forward, hanging close to her friend, and raised her head to speak in turn.

"I'll s-support this."

Ramona stepped into the huddle, looking around at all the faces of the people gathered around her. Honestly, none of them seemed all that confident in whatever shit they were going to get up to, but she supposed that was just the natural part of death being a consequence of failure here. That'd definitely do a lot to damper the mood. Still, Ramona believed that there was something they could do, a way out of this, and maybe putting their lives on the line for it wouldn't be a bad idea at all. Maybe it was the best idea, actually.

It was more than a bit stupid, really, but it had to be enough. If they kept on just trying to survive, rather than trying to live, no good would come out of it, and so this had to be now or never. It was their only shot, and all they had to do was pull the trigger. Or, overtime and the score was tied, 56-56, and all eyes were on the lady making the free throw. Just had to calm yourself, stay cool, and do the stroke.

"So, we all in on this?" She asked, nodding. As things stood right now, it definitely seemed as though everyone was ready to go with this as their ride-or-die, their call to Jesus, whatever. They were ready for this right now, or they were going to be in just a few moments' time.

Everyone was watching, after all, and she'd have to make them proud.

...Had the other three overheard him and Zubin talking about this already? Had he really been that loud?

...It seemed so.

He crossed his arms. Closed his mouth. Stared, for a second.

He shook his head. It didn’t matter. All it meant was that this would take less time to explain.

“I think we’re all in agreement,” he said, turning his head to look at the whole group. “The proper question should be: who would like to be our potential sacrifice?”

Yeah, Zubin really needed to be more subtle. On the other hand, everyone was in.

"Okay. So that's done. I'm just going to need a moment." Zubin shuffled through his bag, looking for some sticks he had, as well as the lighter in his first aid kit. After a little bit, Zubin returned with five thin sticks in his clenched hand.

"We're doing this the same way we pick the pope. Each of us picks a stick. Whomever gets the burnt end get to be the ... test subject." Everyone just looked at each other.

Ramona breathed in and picked out the first stick, practically yanking it out. She sighed in relief as the stick she revealed it was unburnt.

Maxwell went second, uncharacteristically whispering out a cuss word. He closed his eyes as he picked out a stick. He opened his eyes and raised the stick in the air with a small smile to show it was unburnt.

Yumi was next. She plucked out one of the sticks to show that it wasn't burned, wiping her forehead as she did so.

Felicia was last. She looked at the last two sticks, one of them being the key to temporary safety. Her hand hovered over one of the sticks, then went to the other one, pulling it out.

Zubin looked at the final stick in his hand as his fingers opened up, revealing the blackened end of the burnt stick.

"Crap. Well, I guess someone is going to have to find a sheet or something." Zubin said as he took off his hat and sweatshirt. "Don't want them seeing anything."

One by one, sticks were drawn. Ramona had seen hers, saw that it was unburnt, and breathed in and out, a relieved exhale of air, letting some, but not all of the tension out of her body. She wasn't the guinea pig, but still, someone within their little group was gonna have their whole life riding on this plan, on this leap of faith.

She kept on watching, kept on waiting, and when she saw that it was Zubin, she had to toally be honest in feeling a bit relived in seeing it was someone she actually didn't know all that well. It was still selfish as always, those little things that bubble dup under the surface just waiting to pop, like a pimple that had gotten inflamed but maybe also was filled with pus. Could pimples be filled with pus? Actually, that wasn't the most pleasant route to go down, but it was something to ponder nonetheless. Zubin still wasn't a friend, but if he died, so did their plans, all resting on one hand.

Zubin had put his trust in them, to make sure that this counted, that this crazy little plan of theirs did have wings. They could do this, right?

"Yeah," Ramona nodded, looking him straight in the eyes. "just lemme go get something from my first aid kit."

Quickly opening her bag, she got the first aid kit out, and set it on the floor. When opened, it turned out to be just as messy as she had left it after helping treat Maxwell, but there it was, the flash of a silver sheet contained within the box. He had asked for a sheet, so a space blanket would do, right? There was no time to waste, anyways, and it was starting to feel as if the last few minutes in the fourth quarter of a close game.

With a quick flourish, she pulled the emergency blanket out, and showed it to the group.

"Wait, want me to get something bigger? Or, is this okay for now?"

Zubin looked at the blanket before taking hold of it and draping it over himself for a second.

"Yeah. This should be able to reasonably cover both of us." He put the blanket down before rifling through his bag. There had to be something in all this that could work. Shotgun shells, food, water, first-aid kit, stuff in the first aid kit and okay what's this.

"Here. Use this." Zubin handed Ramona a pair of tweezers and put the blanket over his head. "Just ... be careful. No telling what they've rigged up in these things."
