Mr. Wharf? Fire.

Fisher/Pippa/Freya continue; open

This area consists of both upper and lower wharves.

The upper wharf comprises a network of docks suited to both to receiving the fishing ships and passenger vessels common to Cabeza del Dragón and to less industrial-scale activity; the southern pier, older and somewhat out of repair, was a popular place for land-based fishermen to cast their lines. This area is made up primarily of wooden planks, stained with years of exposure to saltwater and sea air, and footing can be somewhat treacherous on the irregular, warped boards. While there is some thought given to safety, with guardrails posted in most areas not directly keyed towards the unloading of cargo, these nevertheless feature large gaps and in some places have fallen into disrepair. Cover here is scarce; a number of barrels, crates, and collections of containers and lumber may be found around the docks, but these tend to be positioned so as not to impede the flow of work, usually to the sides of avenues of passage.

The lower wharf lies beneath the upper, a shadowy maze of rocky beach and pier supports covered in algae and barnacles. Dead fish and crabs wash ashore in abundance, and there are areas where fishermen often dispose of their catch's unwanted heads, guts, and so forth. This leads to the area bearing an almost overpowering odor of nautical decay. The water here is generally shallow, and it's possible to traverse this area even at high tide, but footing is extremely treacherous and there are a number of difficult to spot pitfalls where the ground suddenly drops away into deep water. The dim light and ample cover may make it worth the risk to venture here, though.

Fisher's mouth dropped a little as Freya - of all people - didn't dismiss the girl out of hand. Instead, she seemed more than happy to welcome her along with them. He couldn't deny that she had a point, but basing her assumption on the fact that the Americans wanted to see them inflict mayhem upon one another was a bold and potentially dangerous thing to do.

Had he owned one of those fitness trackers, Fisher knew that his heart rate would have been off-the-charts right now, and he tried to breathe through his nose and out through his mouth to slow it down. The words still echoed through his mind.

Carved. Her. Up.

Helplessly, he looked at Freya with an incredulous look. He'd stepped up to try and make a stand on the matter and someone else had disagreed. Naturally, it had been the person with the musket. Their strongest line of defense. He felt like such an asshole right now, but he didn't know what else to do. Letting someone who was both a professed and accused murderer really didn't sit well with him, and a sour feeling curdled in the pit of his stomach.

Fisher felt like he was going to throw up.

"Look, I don't want to be a fucking asshole but," his voice was a lot weaker than he'd hoped it would be, "can we really afford to risk it?"

Suddenly aware of the indignity that they were talking about Lena as though she weren't even there, he allowed her a glance, though she hadn't really left his eyeline since she'd shown up.

"No offense."

This whole thing was so wrong. All of it.

So it looked like Freya would be the dissenter. Pippa shouldn't be surprised. The girl was clearly controlled by her own whims and emotions as demonstrated by the room they found her in. Pippa had to brush some hair behind her ear and calmly breathe as she took in what both Freya and Fisher said. Fisher didn't think they should take the risk either. Pippa figured it'd be good to try and be in the middle, to at least minimize the potential damage.

"Yes, the Americans could be toying with us," Pippa said to Freya, "but we don't know that for sure. Now, I know this would potentially be part of their plan to sew distrust and get us to kill one another, but we don't have to do anything."

Pippa looked to Fisher then back to Freya. She had to bring in a compromise.

"We can just simply walk away and leave Lena to her own business. If she continues to 'carve up' people or do anything else, then we'll know for sure. But we don't have to be foolish right now."

“That makes no fucking sense.” Freya said in response to both Fisher and Pippa. “You’d both prefer doing nothing when we can help. This is exactly what they want.”

It was frustrating to her. Lena had killed someone that couldn’t be avoided, but the other two were taking the Americans version of the story over Lena’s. They were falling into the trap that had been set for them since they’d woken up.

They had a chance to do something and both Fisher and Pippa were too scared to take it. Freya didn’t have time for that. In fact she didn’t give much of a shit about what Fisher wanted to do and she gave even less about Pippa.

So she took charge, because who could stop her.

Freya turned her attention back to Lena.

“I’m happy for you to come with us, but if you still have whatever you used to...kill Calista I want you to give it to us. At least for the time being.”

She hadn't expected to be defended, nor did she deserve it.

The more they spoke at her, around her, the more she was really left alone with her own thoughts. She certainly couldn't claim that she deserved to live. She did live, and she would live, because otherwise the words and blood of a family that had bloodied themselves on American bullets and shipped themselves onto English soil would have meant nothing. She could hear them, her parents sweet nothings, drowned out in temporally displaced gunfire. Boom, boom. A soldier's cold glare, her heart. No, she was mixing up the then and the now once more.

"What they want is to make sure none of us leave this place," Lena admitted. Aloud, to herself. The others were only there incidentally- she only saw them insofar as her eyes happened to be oriented at their collection of bodies on that other side of the pier, instead as she watched them she could only see a window shattered by troops hunting for the blood of the innocent.

She was no better than them now truly. She lived because that was all she'd ever learned to do.

Her voice, briefly swelled in confident intensity when she'd proclaimed what she knew all too well from experience, ebbed.

"I would endanger you guys." They could have been those faces from Choele Choel, the boys and girls she'd never meet again. The teacher with the broken neck. In some sense, she valued their lives, even if only as an abstract token of what she'd already lost long ago. "I'll-.. go my own way."

She opened her bag, presented it. It was the wrong color perhaps, but it was her white flag. No weapons- she detested the things anyways- all she had was implements of life, not death.

"You must keep others from-"

Whatever she said was irrelevant, her advice had never been intended for anything but token good faith. Non ci piove, in so many words. The smell of the sea, too familiar, lulled her into a false sense of security. As she walked forward with intent to slowly accept her fate she stepped on the wrong board of the pier, and rotting wood sagged, splintered, and shattered all in the half second she had to scream silently. The hole that opened under her feet was formidable, as if a monster of the depths had lashed out at the planks and jaggedly cut them with brute violence.

She fell forward, her bag and all the rest lost to the void in time where adrenaline couldn't possibly catch up.

The bag cleared the gap and landed on the still standing segment of pier. Two hands clamped onto whatever could fight gravity. One caught the lip of the now gaping chasm of briny darkness she was suspended over. The other split open as palm kissed a shard of wood. Then, she screamed for real.

She spoke and Freya wasn’t sure what she was saying. She spoke of the Americans intentions and Freya found it hard to disagree. That wasn’t the point though, they could deal with the final consequences of their situation when they got there, until then it could wait.

But then a random act of the universe decided to interject. The wood under Lena collapsed and in what seemed like slow motion the girl fell. Freya thought she was gone until Lena caught herself with a scream.

“Shit!” The musket fell to the floor as Freya sprinted to the newly opened hole.

Lena was holding on to the rotten wood by one hand so Freya took hold and attempted to pull her up. Her feet struggled to find purchase on the slick, eroded wood however and her attempt stalled out. Not even adrenaline could help in her fight against gravity though.

“Guys! Help me!”

Fisher still felt like such an ass.

Amid the protestations of Freya, it seemed as though the girl had gotten the very clear message that he and Pippa had decided to send - a killer in their midst wasn't welcome, and she was going to go. When she'd simply agreed, and even decided to hand over her weapon, Fisher had immediately felt incredibly guilty. His initial assumptions aside, maybe Freya was right. Maybe the Americans would go to any lengths to get them to-

When Lena fell through the wharf with a shriek, Fisher's train of thought derailed so severely that he unconsciously took a step back.

To her credit, Freya sprang into action immediately, braving the mouldy wood and trying to help. In normal circumstances, with the tide in and the water level high, falling through the wharf would be little more than an inconvenience. But as the water was nowhere to be seen, the drop to the ground below was precipitous and would very likely result in injury or even death.

"Dammit," he muttered under his breath, his feet barely cooperating with the voice in his mind that said to stay, to run away, to be anywhere else in the world but where he was right now. God knew that was the ideal situation, but that wasn't reality. A bit more slowly than he would have liked, Fisher scampered over to the edge of the hole and quickly took stock. The wood was slimy and warped and getting any kind of foothold was going to be difficult. The last thing they needed was for any more of the wood to give way, sending more of them to their demise below. Giving Freya a loaded glance, Fisher got down on his stomach and reached his hand down the hole towards Lena.

"Give me your other hand! We can pull you up!"

It looked as though Lena was willing to go through with the offer. They could simply part ways with the understanding that any more trouble would result in harsher reprimands down the line. It was good to see that Lena hadn't completely lost her mind after allegedly butchering another girl.

But it was then that some other force decided to pass judgement upon Lena. Lena suddenly fell through the wharf and was now struggling to hold on. Pippa remained frozen in place as Freya moved to help her. Fisher also seemed willing to jump into the fray and try to help her. Pippa then saw all the paths before her. She could try to aid the struggling girl, one who had proven herself a killer and was willing to leave the three of them alone. However, Pippa had noticed something else.

If the wood around Lena was weak enough that her weight was enough to cave in, it stood reasonable to assume that the rest of them rushing towards the endangered girl could make the situation worse. Especially since Fisher was laying his whole body on the wooden floor. Pippa could see more wood collapsing under all the additional weight and three people tumbling into the abyss.

Plus, Pippa was sure she could hear more wood creaking. That was enough to convince her to think of the needs of the many.

Pippa quickly moved up and grabbed Freya's gun, then lightly stepped back.

"Careful!" she shouted to Freya and Fisher. "The floor may collapse further."

She stood back and waited to see what would happen.

Lena- hysterically insensate- was still able to feel how the deck below their feet swayed as some- one, two, all, it didn't matter- ran to aid her. The danger to them was real as well. The dock's melancholy croak was a warning louder than the churn of waves unseen below her dangling feet.

They didn't need to risk themselves for her. This was not what she'd lived this long for.

She didn't know what she'd lived for, really. Why she'd been shepherded to safety- why she'd allowed it, all those years ago. Lambs were for the slaughter.

No. She didn't want to go. She would try, still, selfish as it was to keep them here a moment longer. She wanted to take their gift. She wanted them to stay, even as she could feel the wooden planks warp away. She didn't know why.

A hand was closed over hers, and she couldn't even grasp back. The moment she let go it was over. The hand she hadn't been able to keep a grip with clawed up, bleeding from a rend straight through the flesh of a finger, down through the palm, through which bone cleanly glinted. Animal whining, a low thrum of agony. She found another hand.

She made it up just far enough to feel hope's teasing.

Pain erupted fresh, her newfound grip on the boy's hand failed and her body jerked downwards, the leaden weight of her body threatening to take the girl with her.

There was a rush of actions but Freya couldn't take in the details. Her focus was entirely on the girl and keeping hold of her hand. There was nothing else apart from them and their close surroundings. Fisher was there, he was trying to help.

But he couldn't keep hold of the hand he grabbed, after taking some of the girls' weight their hands slipped apart and Freya's body was jerked downward with a loud grunt. All of Lena's weight was once again being held solely by her and there was no way for her to brace.

Freya kept hold, it was all she could do, but the pressure was building in her shoulders. She could feel it. Time was running out for them to do something. Pippa yelled about the floor but Freya didn't give a shit.

"Shut up and help!"

Everything was happening so quickly, yet the world was moving in slow motion. It was a contradiction, yet as Fisher strained to lean himself as far over the hole in the board as he could without falling in himself, relativity was telling him that nothing else mattered as far as this moment in time, right here and right now.

"Shit!"

Lena's hand brushed his, but fell away again. Basically the only thing keeping her up was Freya grabbing both of her hands, but that wasn't going to hold for much longer. He could hear the strain in her voice as she barked at Pippa to do something - do anything instead of stand there and supervise. The very back of his mind made a mental note to revisit his opinion of Pippa once he had moved on from this moment in time. Consciously, he lunged forward to grab one of Lena's arms.

He got one; he grasped her forearm.

His hold was tenuous, and he tried to lean his body backwards so as not to fall into the hole. He could hear the strain coming from his own body now, his heart thundering through his chest. Moments ago, he'd wanted Lena to go away.

This wasn't what he had in mind.

"Hold on, we've got you!"

He tried to keep his voice strong and hopeful as he tried to pull her up.

Fisher wasn't sure if he'd believe it, either.

Pippa remained in place as Fisher and Freya continued to try and pull Lena out of the hole in the floor. Freya had ignored her warning and yelled at her to help. Pippa had to grit her teeth at that. She was helping by warning them about the floor, it was Freya's fault for ignoring it. But Pippa could at least see what Freya was possibly suggesting. There was a way to help, or at least make it look like she was helping without inching closer to falling into the ocean.

Pippa started to shuffle a bit closer to her allies. She could try to grab one of them and pull them back so that they could pull Lena onto the dock. Surely that would be sufficient.

Pippa didn't even get two steps closer when she started to notice some of the wood on the ground starting to splinter and bend upwards. Her eyes widened. Of course she was correct; all that weight on a fragile area would start to cave the hole in either further. And they had the gall to yell at her for pointing out something as obvious as that.

Pippa stopped moving, then took a big step backwards.

"Get back now!" she cried out. "It's gonna collapse!"

Now she had to see if they'd listen to her this time, or if all three of them would just plummet into the sea instead.

Once more she was allowed to have hope. For even the briefest of moments it was that bleed of her past- dismal, inevitable- was erased by visions of a future. She could be returned home. She could be redeemed. But as it turned out, there were some things she was not allowed to run from. Her nightmares of near-death had only ever been hors d'oeuvre. She'd only ever been blessed with a new beginning in a distant land to make her way back to an ending in the one place she truly belonged. As it turned out, being haunted by the past meant it would never be too far from becoming her present once more.

Her legs, skinny, childlike, flailed for purchase. She didn't look them in the eyes and didn't hear their screams.

Someone was screaming, and someone was being shot at, and it wasn't in the here and now but for Lena it might as well have been.

The empty and familiar rush of adrenaline, one last time. And this time with nobody to run from and nobody to run to. Her ragdoll body accelerated downward, her lungs too empty to scream as she clawed at the air all the rest of the short way remaining.

She wouldn't have blamed them if they'd let her go. She wouldn't have blamed herself if it had been her who let go.

But God, she still wanted to live. To at least see the world for it's beauty one last time. It rushed by, past her, away as the sky sped into the horizon farthest from her.

She hit the docks below, they too splintered under her weight, and her struggling was cut mercifully short when more fracturing and spiraling wood erupted cleanly between spokes of her ribcage. Moments later a splash, awkwardly brief.

Wood and water were painted red 'til the stains turned brackish with the uncaring passage of time. Eventually the past would be forgotten and laid to rest. Where it belonged.

There was some more yelling from Pippa that Freya ignored. Fisher said they had her. But then in an instant, they didn't.

Her and Lena's hands were no longer connected. The girl fell and Freya could do nothing but watch. Her body crashed into the docks below them, causing that wood to splinter as well. Then as Freya helplessly watched she vanished in the wood and water. That was it. It was over.

Freya pushed herself back from the hole and sat there. Her arms ached. But despite that her hands still found themselves rubbing her face and then trailing up and over her head.

Failure was tough to deal with. To try and achieve a goal but no succeed had a way of affecting you. Freya had always had the same way of dealing with failures throughout her life. It was the same way she dealt with everything and why change the habit of a lifetime?

She turned her head towards Pippa.

"Why didn't you fucking help?"

Fisher Darden felt like his head was inside of a wind-tunnel. One moment, he'd had Lena's arm within his grasp, straining to keep himself from tumbling through the hole. The next moment, he'd been lighter, grasping at air.

Watching her fall.

Unlike everything else, the fall hadn't seemed in slow motion. It had just happened and when she'd hit the bottom, stopping suddenly in a fury of splintering wood and blood, Fisher found that he was unable to look away. Seconds slipped by and all he could do was just stare at Lena's corpse. Laying there; devoid of what had made her untrustworthy and pitiable all in the same breath.

He didn't remember pushing himself out of the hole and back onto solid ground, and at some point he realized that he wasn't looking at a dead body anymore, but at his hands. They were dirty from more than a day outside, smudged with green algae and dirt from the wharf. Fisher could have sworn that he saw blood on them. Did he have blood on his hands? There was no red, but he could see it all the same.

Someone was yelling, Freya probably. He didn't know; didn't care.

All he could see were his hands, stained with the colours of indecision and failure.

Pippa watched as Freya and Fisher suddenly pulled themselves away from the hole, but without Lena. Pippa's eyes widened. They had failed to rescue her. From the looks of the two, it was pretty much guaranteed that Lena was dead. Pippa lightly covered her mouth with her free hand, but she couldn't say anything because here came Freya, ready to yell at her.

Freya was suddenly acting like Pippa's lack of contribution was responsible for Lena's death. Pippa quietly breathed in and out, and then spoke.

"You couldn't see it, but the wood was starting to splinter around you guys, so if I got closer, we all would be laying in a broken heap right now," Pippa said, her tone stern. "Take a look if you don't believe me."

Pippa gestured to the hole, showing some of the sagging and split wood Freya and Fisher were just moments ago laying on top of.

"Besides, you both had her, so I had every reason to assume you could both pull her up," she added.

"Now, why couldn't you pull her up? Did she lose her grip, or did one of you?"

Maybe it was a bit indignant of her, but Pippa didn't want to take the sole blame for Lena's death or be harangued for trying to avoid further casualties. Besides, if Freya was going to criticize her without the full picture, Pippa could at least show her how it was done by waiting for an explanation and then judging. That was the polite way to do things.
