Private to capitalist pig dog Americans

In contrast to the northern peak, the tip of the southern mountain has no development, and the paths to reach it are few and ill-maintained. What it does offer, however, is a good vantage point on most of the southern half of the island, all from a comparatively inconspicuous, sheltered location.

It shouldn't have happened. Fujiyoshi was smaller than Kazuhikk, and she was injured and unarmed. He should have at least seen her coming.

Kazuhiko had misjudged his own abilities, and Fujiyoshi's

The girl barreled into his side. Her elbow jammed him beneath the ribs, and the force of impact knocked him over. Kazuhiko fell to the ground with a cry of pain. He writhed on the ground, taking deep breaths as he held onto his side.

As soon as Kazuhiko regained enough sense to function, he began scrambling back. The hatchet had escaped his grasp for a second, but he quickly retrived it before pushing himself back to his feet.

He'd lost valuable time. He'd have to try, again and again until the threat was gone. His eyes focused back on the figure of the bloody girl.

Glaring back at him with wild, frightened eyes, Fumiyo grabbed the gun and ran back the way she'd came, briefly halting when she saw Sakura again.

Without thinking, Fumiyo took aim at the girl in front of her and pulled the trigger.

She hadn't been prepared for it to be so quick. The blood and the screaming, faster than the light in her eyes shuttering when she blinked.

She winced, but that was all. She guessed she was that desensitized. She'd promised herself his pain would hurt, she'd been ready for that. As dull as pulling the already crusty, weeks sticky band aid off. Nothing to it. She'd watched him go down. She'd felt the same amount of nothing she'd felt since waking up in the classroom. She was a still life of her own death mask, walking and breathing.

And then suddenly, the gun was pointed at her. She'd sort of forgotten she'd been standing there to one side, eyewitness to yet another pointless thing she'd been expecting to be too busy being already dead to have to burden herself with comprehending. But there was no time for the understanding. A bitter smile- finally, things were turning out the way she'd expected,

and before she could be bothered to feel anything else the front of her skull cleanly cracked open.

Almost as if the world had slowed down like an action scene from one of those big action anime that she used to see advertised on the TV, Fumiyo saw the bullet crack through Sakura's forehead, tumbling out of the back of her head with a spray of blood, bone and brain matter all over the shrubbery behind her.

The world sped back up, and she became acutely aware that she still wasn't safe.

So Fumiyo kept running.

((Fumiyo Fujiyoshi continued in Life is like a staircase.))

The death had happened too fast. Second one, Kazuhiko heard a gunshot and ducked out of the way. Second two, He checked his person for wounds and realized he was uninjured. Second three, he looked up and saw Fujiyoshi's back as she retreated back into the brush. Second four, the terror surged through him. Second five, he was running towards her.

She'd already been gone. The face was split open and oozing blood. Everything slowed down afterwards.

Kazuhiko had sat besides the corpse for hours, or days. He hadn't kept track of time. His eyes were dried out, red and irritated. His uniform was filthy with dirt and blood. It was decaying. It had long ago started to smell, but Kazuhiko could handle that. He couldn’t handle looking at it, however, so he didn’t. He just sat beside it, vision resting tiredly on the thick greenery surrounding him.

He should have just gone along with her plan. He’d been wrong. He’d let his emotions get the better of him. He considered that he could still go through with it. He could just carry the body to a cliff and jump off.

He didn’t do it. That would have been pointless. The corpse wasn’t her. Without her, the act meant nothing. He’d made his choice, and there was no going back.

He could hunt after Fujiyoshi. Chase her to the ends of the island. Make her suffer. That might help him redeem himself, just a little.

He didn’t. That would have been just an exercise for his own vanity. Fujiyoshi was nothing to him, and she’d been nothing to her, either. Neither of them had ever been vengeful. Besides, Kazuhiko’s own failures were to blame. He’d made promises to her that he couldn’t keep.

__

He could try playing the game. Kazuhiko didn’t have the greatest weapon, but he was still strong and uninjured. He had a decent chance, if he tried to win.

But what would have been his motivation to win? What would he have gone back to? Military men clapping him on the back, his mother crying and hugging him, people on the streets of Shiroiwa looking at him with fear, pity, and admiration. Kazuhiko never wanted any of that.

___

He could find Nanahara again and join his village. They’d probably fail, but there was a chance they could be a part of something big. They could rebel against the game, against the government, against the culture of the Empire as a whole. Kazuhiko could go down in history as a martyr for a better world.

That had been the most ridiculous idea of all. He’d never cared about helping people. Kazuhiko had never cared about anyone other than her.

___

Kazuhiko didn’t bother paying attention to the announcements. The names had no value to him.

Shortly after the third or fourth announcement had finished, Kazhiko heard a beep. At first, he thought he might have imagined it. He hadn’t slept in a very long time. But it came again, and again, and Kazuhiko became pretty certain that it wasn’t a hallucination.

The sound felt like it was very close to his ear, but below it. Kazuhiko’s hand drifted to the metal collar around his neck. Oh, that must have been it.

Was he in one of the new danger zones?

He reached to his bag, left ignored beside him, and dug around for his map. He quickly found the Southern Peak. He still remembered when she’d first pointed it out to him, long ago. What was the first danger zone Sakamochi had named? H something? Kazuhiko was in H-3.

The collar beeped again.

He probably was in the danger zone. Kazuhiko sighed and tossed the map away. He lied down on his back, staring at the sky. He still didn’t want to look at the corpse, but he lay beside it. A silly part of Kazuhiko still associated it with her.

It was so foolish, what they’d done to her. And they’d never realize it. This world they’d built was decayed and desiccated. Kazuhiko’s continued existence was as worthless and lifeless as the corpse beside him. It was the same for Fujioyshi, Nanahara, Kuronaga, and The Great Dictator himself.

Kazuhiko was just the only one who knew what he was.
