Katherine Thomas

Name: Katherine Grace Thomas
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Place of Residence: Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
Language/s: Australian English
Hobbies and Interests: School newspaper, reading, writing, listening to music, thrifting, LGBTI+ issues

Appearance: Katherine has naturally curly brown hair that reaches down to her shoulder blades. It is usually trimmed and taken good care of, as she is somewhat finicky about how her hair looks. She has, in more recent history, gained an increased appreciation for hair accessories, as she feels they can make an outfit stand out more easily. Her preferences are for scrunchies, hair clips, bands, and barrettes in vibrant colors.

She wears magenta oval glasses to treat mild far-sightedness, slightly obscuring her brown, narrowed cat-like eyes. Her facial features tend to be slightly angular, with a square chin, broad cheekbones, and a smaller Greek nose. Katherine comes primarily from Irish and British ancestry, and, because she practices good sun protection and skin care, is largely free from blemishes on her suntanned skin. Her lips are thin, with a slightly heavier bottom lip. Katherine likes to wear more dramatic makeup, with attention drawn to the eyes in particular. A typical makeup look for her is dark eyeliner, shimmering eyeshadow, and sheer, subtle lipgloss.

Katherine is one of the taller girls in her grade, at 1.8 meters and 68.04 kilograms (5’11 feet and 150 lbs). She feels self-conscious about her having a curvier build, so she tries to downplay it using sports bras and choosing clothing cuts that don’t highlight it, such as dress silhouettes that add bulk. The standard girl’s uniform at Summerfield State High School consists of a blue-and-white plaid knee-length dress with white cuffs around the short sleeves and collar, black shoes, a navy blue cardigan, and a black wide-brimmed hat. Students are allowed to customize their uniforms up to a certain point, to which Katherine has happily taken up the opportunity to bend the rules to the best of her ability. Typically this means using bold hair accessories, subtle jewelry, and patterned socks and tights. Off-campus, Katherine is fond of eye-catching patterns, with a recent love of holographic print in particular. A typical outfit for her would be a patterned sundress, combat boots, and a denim jacket. She has a love of jewelry, and can often be seen with multiple bangles on her wrist.

On the day she was abducted, Katherine was walking home from school after an event. So, she was wearing her school uniform, with her cardigan tied around her waist. She wore white frilly ankle-length socks, a magenta tattoo necklace, and a blue plaid hairband. Her hat was left behind during the actual abduction.

Biography: Katherine Thomas was born to Oliver and Evelyn Thomas in Brisbane, Australia, as an only sibling. Oliver works as a computer programmer, while Evelyn works as a data analyst.

As a child, Katherine proved to be rambunctious, if also curious about the world around her. She was deeply social, quickly making friends with other students. While she enjoyed playing with other children, she also loved to read. She preferred non-fiction, as she enjoyed accumulating information about the world around her. Katherine enjoyed learning about people in particular, whether specific historical figures or books about psychology targeted at an elementary school demographic. As for fiction, she was similarly drawn to works featuring interpersonal drama and character-driven narratives. She advanced quickly in her reading ability, and was reading young adult novels starting from 4th grade.

Naturally, she applied her love of literature to writing. She started taking creative writing courses in 4th grade, as well as keeping a journal. She enjoyed the rhythmic flow of words, and the various ways they could be used to create new ideas. Naturally, being as sociable as she was, she opted to work with the school newspaper as soon as she was able, as she enjoyed learning about current events both out in the world and around campus.

When she was nine, she began experiencing chronic headaches. When her family consulted a doctor for treatment, it was determined that she was mildly nearsighted, and was fitted with prescription lenses. While Katherine can get around just fine without her glasses on, she starts to experience eye strain and headaches after a while.

At the age of eleven, Katherine was diagnosed with complete androgen insensitivity syndrome. While she hadn’t started menstruating, she was hitting other puberty milestones and, eventually, started experiencing severe abdominal pain. Upon a series of physical examinations, it was determined that Katherine was missing internal reproductive organs, and had developed undescended testes, which had a hernia, explaining the pain. Her treatment was orchiectomy and hormone medication to help with further development. At the time, the normally sociable Katherine fell into a depression, feeling isolated from others. She didn’t fully understand what had happened to her, but she did feel alienated by the surgery and hormone therapy.

Like many people, Katherine would turn to the LGBTI+ community for help. She first encountered them when she first joined social media at the age of 13, and related to many of their experiences, since she, by this point, had some understanding of her intersex status and was developing feelings for women. She enjoyed the more ironic sense of humor these communities would have, and the way they communicated things resonated with the young Katherine, who was conflicted about her feelings towards her sex, gender, and her sexuality. Because Brisbane had a large LGBTI+ community, she promptly joined up with social and activism groups when she was able. At first, her parents were reluctant to allow her to spend time in explicitly queer spaces, but they found that they gave her an outlet and gave her a community of like-minded people. She also began attending groups meant specifically for intersex people, which helped her connect to people with similar experiences further. Katherine has since started blogging about LGBTI+ experiences, whether current events or her opinions about queer subject matter. As she entered high school, she would begin participating in activism, such as volunteering for queer-related groups and raising money for LGBTI+ charities.

Katherine would develop a fondness for thrift shops when she was in highschool. When she first began work as a barista at a coffee shop, she would use any leftover allowance by perusing her local thrift stores for new clothes, furniture, or decorations. She found the thrill of finding new items at a cheap price exhilarating, especially if they are useful or fit her personal aesthetic tastes. Katherine has an admitted fondness for kitsch and brighter color schemes, which contributes to her purchases. She has even picked up seasonal jobs so she could earn more money for her thrift store ventures.

Another habit she would pick up is being a regular follower of charting music, both internationally and in Australia’s Triple J Hottest 100. Katherine has a particular interest in dancepop music, and often listens to it in her spare time while writing, reading, or doing schoolwork. She enjoys seeing the way charts move over time, and new songs reaching the top ranks. She is not so much an album purchaser as she enjoys individual songs, only looking at entire albums if she finds she enjoys a fair amount of songs from it.

As a student, Katherine is generally sociable, and has a knack for good communication. She loves interacting with others, and prefers being in a team rather than working as an individual. Her extroversion has made her well-liked by the student body base, which is bolstered by her involvement in the Writing, Reading, and Newspaper Clubs as well as activism off-campus. Additionally, she tends to be observant, which has made it easier to pick up on social cues and studying, as well as making her a relatively good student, with primarily As and Bs. She enjoys learning, and has some degree of cleverness to go with her being well-educated. However, because Katherine is generally talkative, has an eye for details, and is interested in other people’s motivations, she has gained a bit of a reputation as a gossip; she often talks about others in private and rumors among the student body base, which has caused friction in the past due to perceived nosiness and rumormongering. Additionally, she is prone to overthinking details, which makes her indecisive at times when it comes to making choices; for example, she has a hard time thinking of places to go out with friends, usually only picking one when coaxed by others. Katherine also has an impulsive side to her personality, which is caused by the fact that, while she prefers to be seen as intellectual, she is actually deeply emotional and can act in dramatic ways. Typically, this means she gets passionate easily and becomes moody if things don’t work out the way she expected. That said, she is generally good at communicating about past upsets.

Katherine is still passionate about her interest in LGBTI+ activism and culture. Currently, she is slightly more hesitant to talk about her intersex status more than her being a lesbian; she is emotionally affected by trans-exclusionary rhetoric, and finds it harder to talk about her intersexuality because of the prevalence of transphobia in gay spaces, due to her relating to some trans-related experiences. Also, she has complicated emotions about her past surgery and hormone treatment, as she feels that it was expected for her to have a more cisnormative body, even internally. Katherine also feels that the subject of intersex bodies isn’t commonly discussed in gay and trans spaces. Nonetheless, she has a large friend group that she is willing and able to talk about both her being intersex and her being a lesbian. Her plans post-graduation are to attend university as a Journalism major, as she still feels a passion for writing news stories.

Advantages: Katherine is sociable and generally has good communication skills, which should be a boon in teamwork. She also is observant and has an eye for details. Katherine is both booksmart and clever, which may give her an intellectual advantage.
Disadvantages: Katherine is prone to indecisiveness and overthinking, which may cause her to not act as quickly as others would. She can come off as slightly impulsive, which may cause issues with any groups. Additionally, she tends to be interested in people and is the type to ask questions about others, which may cause friction due to perceived nosiness. Katherine is mildly nearsighted, and can have headaches if left without her glasses for too long.
