Evil

Private

A large, old warehouse found between the mess hall and the parish. The corners are covered with cobwebs, and there are a few cracks in the floor showing its age. Mostly emptied of the ores it once held, the warehouse does still contain a table, chairs, assorted empty boxes, nets, and a number of corroded tools.

She felt the girl squeeze her hand and she pulled her tighter in reply.

They were together in the moment, deep inside the hell they dwelled they had found a moment of peace.

The darkness tugged and smiled, urging them to move deeper inside and forget about the world.

She kept her focus on the girls hand squeezing hers however.

In those moments she was her world.

"I know." She whispered.

"I know."

Rachael was pulled closer. Silence and body heat cozily blanketed her, tucked her away. Into the darkness.

She chose to forget. To open up, to her own world, as the errant currents of her thoughts stabilized.

They buried the heroine out at sea, atop a pyre that burned perpetually for many days and nights, each day and each night passing with an almost lazy arc of the sky drifting above and away from the observers eye. She rested on long forgotten memories, relics of times more peaceful and serene. Closer examination of her tomb, of ashes and yet to be, produced the ghostly relic images of faces and silhouettes she had long ceased to truly recall. Perhaps it was that those at rest did not voice their love in the direction of the living, it stayed hushed in echoing funeral whispers, the final rites of the dead.

Eventually the boat she was upon would drift away, eternally lost, eternally aimless. Exactly where in space and time it belonged.

Drifting, forever.

Inhale.

Rachael nodded, lazily, her eyes long ago shut against the world.

She held the girl close and forced her own eyelids together.

They were together in the darkness as it coiled around them.

It was more insistent then before, but despite that she kept her focus and shut it out.

She kept the girl held and kept her tight.

She shielded her, comforted her and took her away from everything.

The heroine of the story goes out on a quiet note. A graceful last breath. She does go gently into the night...

Inhale.

Rachael did so. Weakly, with her lips fluttering ceaselessly like that of the fish stolen from it's home.

She wondered about what came next.

She wondered if she cared.

She wondered about the struggle that she had been losing. What would be the final sentence, the punctuation mark heavily rested on the conclusion of the story of her being choked to death in darkness so thorough the darkness behind her own eyelids seemed brighter? Every attempt to force that breath, failed, sputtered away by her slowly limp, slack mouth.

Inhale.

No, she would admit it was a waste of time to try. It hurt. It ached, flailing for a tomorrow that would never come.

She hadn't even tried.

Certainly, she hadn't been strong enough. Hadn't cared enough. Hadn't loved enough, to hang on for those who mattered most to her.

She wanted to say she was sorry.

She wanted to say it one last time.

Simple words yet unsaid. She'd never even tried.

She could still...

She still had the chance...

Inhale.

But it was easier, still, to not take that last breath. To let it slip away.

Her last chance, gone.

It was quiet. Peaceful. Here, alone, in darkness.

As the girl finally went limp in her arms and she quietly whispered one final message.

"Thank you."

Once done she gently placed the empty vessel on the ground.

After all the waiting the time had come and gone. It was over.

As she stood she took one last look at Rachael and then left the room.

She moved back to the main part of their shelter, returning to the boy.

"How was your food?"

Kris returned, quiet enough that it was almost like she hadn't left. She was empty handed, so Keiji assumed she hadn't been able to find anything worth talking about.

He smiled sheepishly around a mouthful of dry crumbs, swallowed, and then shook his head.

"Bad," he announced. "But it's calories and that's important. You should grab something too."

He looked down at the floor for a moment, and then perked up.

"Hey, when we make it out of this, you should come to my place for dinner," Keiji smiled. "My mom makes this awesome thing called oyakodon—it's like uh... like it's got chicken and egg in this kind of broth deal?" His grin started to grow as he gestured vaguely with his hands. "So like, my mom learned how to make it from my dad's mom for their one year anniversary, and then she surprised him with it and now it's kind of like the family thing."

Keiji's eyes welled up suddenly, he blinked hard a few times, and then resumed his smile at Kris.

She nodded at the boys response and sat down on some nearby crates. Food was still important, even if it was a reminder of their depleting lives. The food could be the thing that helped them push beyond their limits or there was a chance it would be a pointless exercise. In the end though it didn't matter. It was good he was eating, he would need his strength.

"You're right." She said in response and began looking through her pack for food to eat. The sustenance was important and she couldn't remember when she had last ate. The boy continued to speak of home and his parents. He even invited her to his for a meal.

Her eyes looked over to him and then moved down to focus on her food as she blinked a few times, her brain processing the offer he had made.

She looked up as he was blinking.

He didn't know her, she didn't even remember if they had met before she had woken up, but still he had made the offer. It was a dream, one they couldn't attain.

But even then...

It was a second unprovoked act of kindness.

She met his eyes and smiled.

"I'd like that. It sounds nice."

Neither of them said anything for a long time after that.

Both of them being consumed by their own thoughts. The outside world fading into the background as they considered everything. Time slowing and disappearing from their perception until they ceased to register it. But it did not stop.

Slowly, inexorably inching forward, never ticking back. No way to ever regain what had been loss.

She had her time and she had used it.

Looking up from her contemplation she considered what to say before breaking the silence.

"Do you want to stay here or leave?"

Keiji made a noncommittal noise at length and shrugged.

"I feel like we should..." he trailed off, chewing on it. He wanted to focus on that happy memory from home not, well, not plans, not for what he was doing here. Cause then he needed to think about here. Ech.

"Other people are around still. We should try and, you know--maybe see the others? I..."

"Or not see, just keep things... calm. Yeah. Calm."

There was no real path for them to take because there was no real choice. No matter what they chose to do they would end up with the same result. It was an illusion of choice. They'd had no true choice ever since they'd woken upon the island.

It was hard for him to make the choice because there was no choice for him to make. Not really.

The false choice was hers to make.

There was a delay as she considered what potentially awaited them on each path before the inevitable final end.

If they stayed there was a chance he would find what she had done.

Time would catch her eventually, there was no fooling or escaping the inevitable truth.

Eventually she reached a conclusion.

"We can go find others."

Okay. Other folks it was!

Keiji had a--not a good feeling exactly but maybe as best a feeling as could be hoped for?
