la guerra de los santos

open, still day 1 allegedly with possibly a third of the whole roster

Hugging the southern side of the island, this small village is where the vast majority of the island’s previous residents lived, worked, and leisured. The houses and occasional business closest to the waters edge all reside on stilts, a preventative measure for the unpredictable tides, while those closer to the outskirts begin to have backyards and small farming coops. What some would consider the centre of the town also contains a small square, as well as a simple stone church, short two-story bell tower, and wild overgrown gardens surrounding a distinctly leaderly house.

Jevaun's posture stiffened and his eyes widened. He heard it first tap away at the glass, the stained glass window of Jesus. Something plinking away in between all the gunshots. It was no longer a tap and more like a boom as the glass broke and he watched Jesus fall to pieces in front of him.

Who did that? Someone trying to break in? Use the shots as a distraction for a drop on him and...

Like hell, he'll let that happen.

He stood up and made his way over the broken glass, hearing it crash and break and gnaw at the soles of his shoes. Jevaun held his breath, his finger hovering over the trigger, and with his gun aimed towards the window, ready to let off a burst the second he saw something outside.

He could see two figures outside. Crouched, arguing.

And in that second with bated breath, his finger pressed down as he aimed at the two.

God, why did she have to wake up so close to an idiot? It didn't matter if they were playing the game these people wanted-going against it wouldn't matter if they were armed with shit for weapons, or worse-dead! Was that so hard to understand?

She turned to yell just that-tell the guy he was a dumbass if he thought he could get through any of this without fighting-

And then another window broke as her cheek erupted in pain.

Jia Li fell to the ground screaming as the momentum and pure shock knocked her off her feet. Something warm and wet was running down the cheek in pain. Her eyes were shut as she felt fear run through her entire body.

She'd skinned her knee once. A trip while playing with a jump rope in primary school. She cried and cried and cried, thinking it was the worst thing that would ever happen to her. That it was the most painful thing, and she would probably have to get surgery to replace the skin.

As she felt air pass through the new hole in her cheek, Jia Li realized how wrong she was.

Another gunshot, and blood erupted from Jia Li’s face as she looked at him, falling to the ground. There was an impulse to tell her that he’d known this was an awful idea, or to tell the crazy assholes in the chapel to go fuck themselves, but there wasn’t any time left.

“Come the fuck on, we’ve gotta go.” Archie took hold of Jia Li’s arm and pulled. She wasn’t particularly heavy which was a bonus.

“Rubi! Dominik! Come on!” He shouted, but Archie didn’t turn to check for the others, eyes fixed straight ahead as he pulled Jia Li along.

The village had been a clear bust, and they needed to refresh and regroup if they were going to have any hope of survival.

Jia Li didn't argue this time. Her mouth was too busy sobbing from the pain.

Jia Li didn't fight the pulling. Her brain was too focused on using the hand not taken to cover the hole in her face.

Jia Li didn't see where she was going. Her eyes were too full of tears to let anything not appear to be blurry.

But Jia Li followed, because she was scared of what would happen if she didn't.

God DAMN that was loud!

Clara ducked her head back in through the window at the sound of a much too close impact of bullets against masonry. Her ears rang as she remained still for a moment or two, panting as she leaned up against the wall, the chaos outside continuing to unfold.

This...this was the real deal. She was firing a real gun, with real bullets, against a real person who was firing back at her. It was just like that guy had said back at the auditorium - this was a battle for survival. As cliche as it sounded, it was kill or be killed, and Clara didn't plan on taking her trip to the big football pitch in the sky just yet.

Just as luck would have it, she managed to stick her head out the window just in time to see her opponent scampering down the dock and out of the beach. She took a moment to savour the brief feeling of victory before realizing that she'd have to move quickly if she was going to catch up. Within seconds, the walls surrounding the staircase blurred by, soon followed by the vague image of a doorframe. It wasn't much longer before the entire village was left behind, as Clara made her was to the harbor while trying her best to avoid the sightlines of whoever was in the church (if they were still paying attention at all). She paused for a moment as she reached the edge of the dock, taking a deep breath before jumping down onto the beach below.

He'd done it. His finger pulled away from the trigger, feeling the after-effects of the vibrations it made in his hands.

Jevaun knew even through the muzzle flash of his gun that he'd made a hit. The screams similar to that of a banshee echoed through the village. He knew they were of his making, mixed with more distant yelling and sobbing.

He watched as the boy pulled the screaming girl away. Good, he hoped they would go far away from here.

"Sorry George." He said as he made his way back, pushing him over to get at his bag. He would have pulled out what it had inside to his bag if there wasn't a sense of urgency, he could not stay here for long.

"Sorry I couldn't keep you alive."

With George gone who could he trust? Who else around here would be friendly to him? The closest would be the bag boy from earlier who had vanished in the middle of the chaos. He did not know where he was, and at that moment he did not care. He just wanted out of this place.

Opening the front door slowly and carefully, Jevuan peeked out. Things had quieted down outside. All that was left were the sounds of different footsteps going further and further away from him.

He left the bucket and pole behind. The thought behind it was to fish and use that for food as he did not trust what they had given them. That made sense when he had a partner.

He looked back at George for a brief minute. Any more words failed him at that moment before he pulled the door open and walked outside. A few careful steps at first, ready to jump back into the church if needed. When no shots were made, Jevaun ran.

It was a struggle, carrying two bags and a gun whilst running. His right knee was still banged up from that fall a year ago, but he could not take any chances.

There was no turning back.
